So, as many of you have probably heard by now, Microsoft confirmed a few days ago that the Xbox 360 will get an update on April 6 that will allow USB flash drives to be used for storing your 360-related game saves, demos, profile, etc.
Nice.
As Major Nelson puts it:
Once you take the system update on April 6th, you’ll be able to connect your USB flash drives to your console and head over to the memory section to configure your new storage device. Once you do that, the system will conduct a one time performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. You will then be able to configure how much storage to use on the device, up to 16 GB. The remaining space on the flash drive will be accessible by your PC or Mac. USB Hard drives may work, but like flash memory, you’ll only be able to use up to 16GB of space. Since performance on flash based USB storage is usually better, I highly recommend using flash based instead of spinning media like a hard drive…it’s just going to give you a MUCH better experience.
Sweet! So I’ll be able to put my Master Chief thumb drive to good use for once!!!
Anyway, I wanted to make sure everyone knew about this and then ask you all what you think. Is this WAY over due? How does it enhance the 360 experience? Do you plan on utilizing it yourself? Let us and your fellow Axe Heads know in the comments section below!

I guess it might be good for some people. But as for me, I havent even filled a 20Gb harddrive yet, and I do enjoy my xbla games. But hey, an option for the future, can’t go wrong with that. Should have come way sooner though.
I have owned an xbox360 since it was released december 2005(two of them since the first ones warranty ended and it broke) and my loyal 20Gb hdd which has seen many many games, and now my soon to bee 5 year old hdd is so filled with savegames that every time I download a demo or install some parts of the game I have to manouvre a bit.
I never went the distance and bought the 60Gb or the 120Gb since they were so damn expensive. I thought I really have to buy buy a new hdd for my xbox but this will give me some breathing space for some time, since I’ll have to buy a 1Tb-1.5Tb harddrive for my pc for the same price the 120Gb for xbox costs.
I also got a ps3 a year or two ago and I gotta love the fact that you could install lets say 160Gb hdd as i did or what ever you want. And they took the ability away from the slimlines, and that’s near sighted when this console generation is said to last the longest!
The real apps for this that I will most likely use is to copy or move my forza3 saves to this and If I go to my friends house to play we can test out your garages in Nürburdring Nordschleife and so on..
I think its great that Microsoft is finally bringing this support, the only problem I have is the limit. 16 gigs is substantial enough to say, TRANSFER data but keeps it from replacing the hard drive. I realize that they make money from hard drives, but if you are going to support usb storage why not go all the way?
But everyone forgets there has been no mention of it been able to play a backup copy of a game !
A original 360 memory stick could not store and play a 360 game (Maybe a XBLA game) so this USB support will be very limited to Arcade Games, Profile & save games and some limited DLC.
The only reason this is been released by Microsoft is simply because Natal will use up every inch of the onboard memory when Natal is released.
Microsoft will limit the use of USB supported devices attached and game backups will only be supported on the ordinary 20gig+ 360 HD
LOL 3 years too late for me to care
