The past twenty four hours may prove to be 2010’s most dramatic day for gaming. It all began Monday evening when G4’s Patrick Klepek began reporting on a “tense” situation at Infinity Ward. Non-uniformed security personal had taken up position outside the developer’s offices. The situation between the Modern Warfare 2 dev and publisher Activision was described as being “tense” as of late. Studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella had met with Activision Monday morning and hadn’t been seen thereafter by anyone at IW. This is what followed.

Late Monday night, things started breaking loose. Jason West updated his Facebook status with a message that read “Jason West is drinking. Also, unemployed.” West’s Linkedin profile was also updated, indicating his position as President/Game Director/CCO/CTO at Infinity Ward had ended as of March 2010. It was also discovered in an SEC report filed Monday morning, Activision stated, in part:
“In November 2009, the Company released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a game developed by one of the Company’s wholly-owned studios, Infinity Ward. As noted above, Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling console title in the U.S. and Europe in 2009. Consistent with past practice, the Company intends to release a Call of Duty game in 2010 developed by another wholly-owned studio. The Company is concluding an internal human resources inquiry into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward. This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation. At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company.”
By Tuesday morning things were beginning to coalesce. Vince Zampella’s Linkedin profile had also been updated to reflect his departure from Infinity Ward. Speculation mounted about tension between the studio and publisher over the Call of Duty franchise.

Infinity Ward had reportedly not been pleased with the idea of any other developer working on a Call of Duty title. When the studio renewed its contract with Activision in 2009, one clause affirmed that only IW be allowed to make CoD games in a contemporary setting. With Infinity Ward on a game-every-two-years production cycle and Activision wanting a new CoD title annually, its not difficult to see where the friction over outside devs working on Call of Duty would have entered the fray. As it turns out, when they finally showed their hand, Activision’s plans went far beyond a third party developer and new Call of Duty title during Infinity Ward’s off year.
In a press release on Tuesday, March 2nd Activision “announced new strategic plans for the Call of Duty® franchise” that included the formation of a CoD business unit, a new entry in the franchise from Treyarch in fall 2010, a new game expected in 2011, and that the publisher was in “discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.”
We also learned that wholly-owned subsidiary Sledgehammer Games (helmed by Dead Space alumns Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey) is working on a new title that will expand the Call of Duty franchise into the action-adventure genre. The press release confirmed that while Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with the studio, Infinity Ward would still deliver the first two DLC map packs for Modern Warfare 2 sometime this year. Activision hasn’t elaborated any further on the charges of “insubordination” or the legal proceedings alluded to in the SEC filing.
So that’s it gang. In the last twenty-four hours the two men most directly responsible for one of the biggest franchises in gaming history were handed their hats and shown the door. The alleged reason is that Activision wanted to expand the Call of Duty franchise into a immense, multi-tiered brand while West and Zampella didn’t.
So what do you think? Did Activision screw themselves or cut dead weight that was holding them back? Did the former heads of IW get the sharp end of the stick or were they just too narrow minded to grasp the big picture? Will this negatively impact the Call of Duty series or turn it into the first mega-franchise of the modern console era? Cry havoc and let us know what you think about this remarkable series of events.

I love the smell of capitalism in the morning.
This is what happens when the suits smell money. However, I don’t think this will impact actual sales for future iterations in the franchise. Consumers at large aren’t a very conscious bunch so I expect them (just like Activision does) to be nice little sheep and buy CoD games just because they’re called CoD (see Madden, or ANY sports franchise for that matter). Quality-wise, I give this one about a year (two at best) before it implodes.
From my outside opinion(take into consideration I have no experience developing games), a studio needs strong, focused, leadership to keep it all on track. The larger the studio becomes the more essential leadership becomes. If Activision replaces these two gentlemen, with individuals that do not execute their roles at the same level then Infinity Ward’s quality may fall.
Its not that they need leadership, its the fact that the people working at infinity ward have been working under these two guys for years, some for over 10 years. Things wont sit well with the employees there, and if activision thinks they can just replace them they are idiots.
Honestly i hope this turns into a Jeff Gertsman situation. Jeff was fired from gamespot, a few of his fellow coworkers left and started a better website then the one they worked at before. I hope these two guys who got fired start up their own studio(again) and make a game that rivals COD. They wont have trouble getting a publishers, these are the guys that started the studio that made one of the most successful FPS games in the world.
Activision is gonna kill off Call of Duty like they did with Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero before it. I hate to say it because I love Call of Duty but we all know that it is pretty much dead now. Surely more IW employees will leave and Activision is gonna milk CoD til it’s dead. RIP.
Activision is looking for the early money, and I cant blame them for doing what is required of most companies to keep afloat, and that’s to strike while the iron is hot. COD:MW2 sold amazingly well, the COD franchise is consistantly profitable, and they still have Treyarch in the bag.
That being said, we’ve seen Activision’s early money-grab results, which burn off quick. Guitar Hero particularly, a series that really could have gone on indefinetly has released more games in a short period of time than any one person of the franchise is willing to pay.
And as for Jason West and Vince Zampella, these guys have a very strong petagrie behind them, and I have no doubt that other companies will gladly pick them up, especially with their recent success. On a personal note I want to wish these guys the best of luck, and am hoping the best for these guys.
What I dont think is happening with Activision is perspective of the long-term. You are not going to be able to pull off a COD:MW2 every single year.
Back when I was in college, I was told everyone is looking for Fast, Cheap, and Quallity. I was also told if you are, pick 2, because one of those three is going down the crapper. Well, we know Activision is going for fast paced releases, now we have to wonder how money-hungery they are with their golden boy series.
Little note to Activision; Take your time, gamers are willing to wait a little longer for the franchises they are financially and emotionally invested into, especially if it means bringing out a better product.
It looks as if IW wants to join the MMO market. At least by using a subscription based online payment system. With the action adventure element present, who knows what will happen…
I really didn’t like MW2, but it’s sad that 2 really talented guys lost their jobs over some bullshit, at least they won’t have a hard time finding a new job in the industry.
Good luck to Jason and Vince and fuck Activision for firing them !
Serves IW right for charging $60 for a PC title with limited customization and no dedicated servers.
What comes around goes around?
*Flame off*
MW2 was overhyped and unimpressive. Who really should take the credit is the marketing team for making it such a huge public success. With all the hype MW2 recieved you would expect it to have a state of the art engine with some neat innovations. But nope, a recycled engine with subpar graphics and the same old gameplay.
Activision has a vision, regardless of it being right or wrong in the long run. In order to impliment a strategic long term vision, you need top tier management agreeing too it. Without this, it will fail. Clearly Activision made the right move if what they wish to do is go through with their vision of expanding on the franchise as a cash cow of sorts
This is fucked…
I myself have never been a COD fan but this is Monopoly at its finest. As someone has already said it looks like Activision wants to do the same to the COD series as they did to the Guitar Hero series. One game makes them a huge profit so they think they will get the same results with other variations of the game. Now look at the GH series, its pretty much dead because Activision keeps on making different variations of this series and now no one really gives a shit rather they see a new one or not. In away Activision has single handedly ruined the music genre of gaming and it looks like they may go down the same road with COD.
And this is why I still refuse to buy any game from those money grabbing corporate a-holes
It’s ridiculous that the guys that helped make the call of duty series great can get fired, because their opinion (the sane one) wasn’t their publishers opinion (keep in mind that infinity ward is only currently employed by those **** and that their contract ends relatively soon…)
If IW had the balls to retain ownership they wouldn’t be in this mess and they would likely be bigger than Valve by now.
When CoD1 came out Activision only owned 10% of the company.
I believe activision have “screwed themselves” royally on this one.
Well given what happened to The Silver Lining project last week all I can say is congratulations Activision you win the GOLD, no wait – PLATINUM, no scratch that -UNOBTANIUM medal for being the biggest jerks in the gaming industry. Just in case you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a link:

Incidentally, any King’s Quest fans might want to download AGD’s Sierra remakes before they get shutdown too.
I think that all is coming to a time where what happened with IW back then when they did Medal of Honor – Allied Assault and EA asking them to do more, but IW just simply went away from EA’s grip and started doing Call of Duty.
Thing is that for long time IW wanted and still wants to make a new IP but something evil like Koteck isn’t letting his grip from Warfares, simply cause there’s a market to milk which we come to fill.
My point is why are we feeding monsters like this which are destroying the creativity developers have not letting them make new awesome IP’s, but sticking to the SAME OLD BORING STUFF again and again. Seriously IW just wanted to stop with MW1, Koteck didn’t, MW2 is just a MW1 extension cause on every other aspect is the same, and I dare anyone of u tell me wrong without including the crappy multiplayer disbalance THEY BOTH HAVE!
Fact is people like Koteck are just making money of this, and ofc its his right, but why are we still whining about wanting new games and IP when WE are the ones filling up his pockets with 1 billion $!? are we so desperate for the same thing we are afraid for new stuff!? There are a ton of other games out there that deserve much more attention than the OVERRATED MW2 which they don’t get, and cause of that most of them fail and fall to the grip of companies like Activision and EA, and the more of them Activision gathers the more monopolized the gaming industry gets, thus NOT making games we’d like to play cause no competition would be in existance once a monopol bringing us to a doomsday of gaming were all we play with is the same old **** coming from Kotick mind! We are the customer, WE provide the paycheck for their services, why are we letting them treat us gamers in this way, can’t we do something!? OFC we can, Speak with OUR WALLETS not with our asses! and this is my BattleCry!!!
Activision cut dead weight in my opinion.
Vince Zampella & Jason West let the success of there latest venture MW2 go to there heads, when in business you start believing that no project can be compleated without you or your importance or leadership cannot be replaced.
This is when heads of organisations (Activision in this case) see you more like an obstical & hindrance to ther companys values and production ethics , in this particular case I believe Zampella & West broke there companys code of ethics & have been removed.
This happens in all walks of life ! once an employee thinks he is bigger than his/her position, they start doing things they should not. There is no differeance between the gaming industry & every day job positions that we hold, if we step out of place we too would be removed.
The worst decision Zampella & West made regarding MW2 was leaving the story open for a sequel forcing Activision into production of a MW3 so soon after the second, when it looks like it was not in the script, basically holding Activision to ransom, thus harping back to these guys were making themselves more important they they were and considering themselves irreplaceable.
not paying a single cent on any activision game from this day forward!
FUCK the suits!
DEATH to activision!
SOUND the BATTLE CRY!!
While that is mostly true, its harder these days for Independent studios to compete with the resources of Ginormous publishers who buy them all up. It really would surprise me if you don’t hear most if not all IW talent follow. Activision clearly wants to take COD:MW in another direction and IW will have to watch as their creation morphs into something other than what was their artistic intent or leave.
It’s either that or compromise(sellout) and ride the gravy train. Its going to be interesting to see what the rest of IW does.
Activision already milked Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero on a yearly basis and it destroyed sales. It seems like they’re just repeating the same mistakes again, and I don’t think an adventure Call of Duty game series would be that popular. A lot of people might buy the first adventure game because of the name, but I think interest would die after that. Also, I can’t help but wonder, if they kill this franchise, what does Activision have left?
Happened again, first with EA then Activision…
“bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.” In your F dream, Activision. The “thing” in asia called itself “online multiplayer game” is not video game. It is some software people running on their pc to kill time and piss money
MW2 wasn’t that great of a game, but I still feel bad for all the other IW employees that are still under the absolute rule of activision. Although, I think a lot of us saw this coming. Everybody knows activision’s reputation for milking franchises and everybody knows IW’s reputation for two-year cycles and their outspoken commitment to quality (whether they actually do commit to quality is debatable, but whatever). As soon as I saw activision and IW working as closely as they were on MW2, I knew that it was the beginning of the end for IW. But, it’s not over yet. Let’s see how the rest of this shakes out.
Infinity Ward was not in control of the price point for MW2.
In my opinion, IW had it right. I think that they wanted to avoid the annual release because it changes an innovative and fun game series into and shitty experience where nothing new happens and all the only reason its being released is to make money. They had the craftsmen mentality of “Yes, this is our job, but we want to make best product we can”. It’s not about money for them (they already have shit loads more than likely) but its about making a fun and memorable gaming experience. Fuck annual releases, fuck Activision.
see now i boycotted Activision since back when the whole Scratch and Brutal Legend shit was going on. i’ve known for a while that Activision are cunts. i was disappointed not to be able to play MW2, but hey, i have my principles.
these two guys are gonna get a job at the drop of a hat and could easily get funding to open a new studio and probably persuade a swathe of IW employees to follow them.
COD is already a milked franchise as far as i’m concerned. i can’t think of many games that have gone through a seventh iteration and survived save a few Nintendo classics (that i never liked anyway: rinse and repeat) and Final Fantasy.
if these guys had any sence they would work on a MMO type FPS. TF2 is a perfect example of how it should be done. if these guys can apply their FPS prowess to something like that then they are set.
Wow is this how low activision has sunk.
MODERN WARFARE TO THE GROOOOOUND!!!! It’s not surprising at all. When you have a franchise that makes you a gizillion dollars, a major publisher will milk it to the limit until the market gets bored. Even if they have to destroy the responsible for that success. All the franchises through the history of Activision have suffered the same destiny. Trust me when I say that if selling boxed-poop was the new product that everyone wants, activision would trash all their gaming projects and jump in to the boxed-poop business… oh wait… I think they are doing it now.
This is a mixed bag I think. I want to take the side of the two gentlemen who were let go but I think of the shortcomings of MW2. The single player was too short and unimaginative and lack of proper PC support could have both been cleaned up before release. All that being said I realize activision didn’t let go of them because of this but rather a desire to water down the series with a bunch of different studios…I like the call of duty series but I don’t put all the games on the same level as the ones with IW on the cover. CoD 3 and World at War were inferior to the rest of the games in pretty much every way. I would caution activision because short term profits could very easily kill off their most successful franchise. Then again I geuss it doesn’t matter when World of Warcraft is shoving money down their throats like a mother bird feeding her babies. CoD franchise was great but I would geuss it’s all downhill from here.
Activision is really turning over gaming for the last few years. It’s kinda scary how Bobby Kotick say(with no shame what so ever) that he dont wanna make fun games, just lots of them.
Anyway, West and Vince will be up and working soon.
My tip?(WISH!!) Put them om Duke Nukem! Duke Nukem Resurrection.
If they made that game in the same “Hollywood blowout” style like MW2…. My god, the child in me would jump on my daughters trampoline for a day.
I can dream, right?
Good luck Vince and Jason. We will keep a eye out for what you have in store next.
Way to go Activision, milk a franchise til its dead, sacrificing quality for quantity just to make a little extra buck, well I know I’m not buying another COD game unless those men are rehired because that’s unbelievable. How did they expect firing the leaders of the company producing their most profitable game would turn out. You just can’t do that, I guess I’m just gonna have to start boycotting all COD games now just like I have been for all the Treyarch COD, Guitar Hero, and Madden games. They’re simply not worth the $60 because they are oversaturated poop that Activision is filling the market with to make money, well good luck making money when only ignorant/careless people are the only ones buying your low quality games. Now if you excuse me I’m going to go buy Battlefield Bad Company 2 and some Microsoft Pts for Rock Band DLC.
This is hilarious. These two guys came out and said FU to CoD fans, stole community cod4 mods, and generally acted like complete tossers over MW2. But now they’ve got some fanboys acting like they’re martyrs…
These two were behind a lot of the bad stuff in MW2, but responsible for none of the cool stuff in MW2…so who cares if they’re gone? Not me. It’s just a couple of rich dudes arguing with some other rich dudes about some business crap…
So Activision are putting more effort into the CoD series…maybe (probably) they’ll screw it up…but sympathy for West and Zampella? No chance. They were just a couple of business guys, and they bought nothing good to CoD, so F ‘em.
