Today Bungie and Activision announced an exclusive, worldwide partnership that will see the long-time Microsoft only Halo developer Bungie’s new IP being published across multiple platforms throughout the next 10 years. Of course, Microsoft still owns the rights to Halo and Bungie is still an independent studio, but the deal signifies a new long-term commitment that will see Bungie titles reach all major platforms.
While no big details of the particular IP were given, aside from being noted as Bungie’s “next big action game universe”, we’re sure we’ll get more info on the project relatively soon. Check out the full press release below for all of the details and let us know what you think about this significant development in the comments section below.
PRESS RELEASE
Bungie, the developer of blockbuster game franchises including Halo, Myth and Marathon, and Activision, a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, the #1 online games publisher (Nasdaq: ATVI), announced today that they have entered into an exclusive 10-year partnership to bring Bungie’s next big action game universe to market. Under the terms of the agreement, Activision will have exclusive, worldwide rights to publish and distribute all future Bungie games based on the new intellectual property on multiple platforms and device. Bungie remains an independent company and will continue to own their intellectual property. Additional terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The groundbreaking alliance will provide Bungie its first such partnership since splitting off from Microsoft in 2007, significantly broadening its global reach by providing the resources and support to develop, distribute and release games worldwide on multiple platforms and devices.
Activision will broaden its portfolio with a new franchise from one of the industry’s most creative, successful and proven studios, whose games have sold more than 25 million units worldwide. To date, Bungie’s Halo games have generated approximately $1.5 billion in revenues, according to The NPD Group, Charttrack and GfK. Activision expects this agreement to be accretive to its operating margins as of the release of the first game.
“We chose to partner with Activision on our next IP because of their global reach, multi-platform experience and marketing expertise,” said Harold Ryan, President of Bungie. “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.”
“Bungie is one of the premier studios in our industry and we are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to work with their talented team over the next decade,” stated Thomas Tippl, Chief Operating Officer of Activision Blizzard. “Bungie has developed some of the most compelling and successful games, multiplayer experiences and thriving fan communities, and this alliance underscores our long-standing commitment to foster the industry’s best creative talent. Our unprecedented partnership with Bungie will enable us to broaden our pipeline of exciting new games as we continue to strengthen our industry position and pursue long-term growth opportunities.”
Thx for the tip Rialce!

I LOVE this quote right here, “From working together over the past nine months on this agreement, it is clear that Activision supports our commitment to giving our fans the best possible gaming experiences.” Said by Harold Ryan.
Not the best quote considering the “passionate embrace” Activision gave Infinity Ward recently. If Bungie wants to do this, sure up to them, but they should REALLY be prepared to get the same treatment in a few years.
hmmmmm let me think………… 20 people already left Infinity Ward, Activision partners with THE OTHER First-Person-Shooter developer, Im trying to put the pieces together, but I can’t think of what they could possibly be working on…
I hope it’s Little Pony Jewelry Frenzy 2011!!!!!!!
This is a FUCKING joke right?
Halo: Reach on PC,yeah !!!
omg bungie what have you been smoking, activision is evil pure evil. modern warfare 3 is never gonna happen the best shooter ever is no more (prediction of course) why bungie ? mind you if activision screw over bunjie, there s always the master cheif who ll kick there corprate arses
If activision starts to buy out bungie’s stock then i know its time to jump the bungie fan ship i currently sail on. I see that they are still independent and that must have been a decision they took early on for obvious reasons. Also they had better keep ownership of their new IP, they ain’t stupid so i have faith.
But of course my biggest gripe is that now a game i might like is going to be on systems other than the ones i own, waaaaaahhh waaaaaah waaaaahh pitiful and pointless fan-boy bullshit etc.
I guess Activision was happy to get this out there considering the bad press theyve gotten with the West and Zampella incedent. I suppose at least it garunteed that Activision will, if not anything else, support the series (regardless of how agressive they could get with it, lol)
So long as Bungie stays independant They should be fine. Above all else I am curios what The new IP will be, heres hoping for some new info
I would say Activision would just try to milk Halo for all it’s worth like they plan to do with COD. However, Bungie has already done that.
I don’t think that is possible, since the trademark for Halo still belongs to Microsoft. Much like Jaffe’s new studio cannot produce a God of War or Twisted Metal for anything but the PS3, but they can make new IPs that are not bound to a specific console. They are most likely trying to get Bungie’s reputation as a FPS shooter developer to replace the loss of IW.
This is bullshit. Bungie buys freedom from MS, and then goes right to sign on with activision. I thought Bungie was smarter than that. They should publish their own games and actually own an IP.
It’s a perfect fit, Both are mediocre In their fields
Okay I think we are all on the same page as far as activision is concerned. They are either extremely stupid or they are ran by guys who got spat out of video game hell.
I mean seriously they have destroyed the call of duty franchise with their bullshit. I got a knot in my stomach yesterday when I was playing Modern warfare, I fear I will never hear Capt. Price saying someone is TALKING A PISS. He had to be one of my favorite characters in Video game history.
I can’t think of what is going through the heads of everyone at Bungie. I mean I hate HALO. I really could careless about bungie’s Games at this point.
Did they not see what Activision just did to the Infinity Ward team. Seriously you want to talk about sinking your own Flagship or shooting yourself in the foot. Activision just took a rusty blade to their own nut sacks cut them off and feed them to themselves with this Infinity Ward stunt.
OH YA FYI Bungie and their Halo series is nothing when compared to Infinity Ward and what they did with Call of Duty.
Wait a second I know this is a game site for news and all that good stuff, but i really feel like discussing Activision after they basicly just robbed us of something as great as Call of Duty. Discussing them is alot like discussing Limp Bizkit on music sites. They are a joke and ill never buy another product Activision publishes. That company should be burned to the ground and their Company heads should be tossed to the masses and the CHILDREN OF THE AXE.
ACTIVISION AS A WHOLE HAVE WON MY DOUCHE BAG OF THE YEAR AWARD.
ANYONE WHO DOES BUSINESS WITH ACTIVISION AT THIS POINT DESERVES TO GET BENT OVER AND PENETRATED…thats right no dinner, no kissing, no reach around…..straight to the brown eye
i just hope activision cant touch halo. leave that to bungie
-ooooh ice-cream?!… ugh bleh activisionflavor
Oh dear i fear for a new marathon game now!
I quit.
So long as Bungie keeps everything they create, I suppose the only bad thing about this deal is that Activision makes some money out of it.
If not, it was nice knowing you, Bungie.
We are all going to die…
despite that activision is pure evil even though microsoft is a greater evil. Microsoft dosen’t just have bad game business but bad buiness practices period. Although with this new iphone 4g bull shit and calling the police to break into some ones apartment like he murdered someone maybe steve jobs had it coming
sry email is menelik2@gmail.com
like to end with i always wish there was like a versus for shooting games they do it for fighting games and i thought it would be sweet if they did a halo v.s call of duty and this maybe be possible if its a pc and xbox exclusive sry ps3 people. For damn sure sense activision is going to milk the shit out call of duty bungie will release a call of duty. I’m just saying there top game is a fps and bungie is known for great fps’s and great music so fuck activision if the first collaboration with bungie and another franchise is guiterhero master chief addtion
No, Activision does not own Bungie. Bungie still has their independence, Activision just publishes their games. All IPs delevoped by Bungie will now belong to Bungie, unlike the Halo franchise. Activision cannot do anything with the Halo franchise, as evident by Bungie saying Reach will be the last Bungie Halo, although Microsoft could still have one developed.
you damn stright that bs they pulled with scratch a dj game that was made before and was supose to come out before dj hero. Brutall legend where they dumped the project but got piss double fine founded another publisher
i didn’t say that the properties of bungie would go to activision ijust thought it be sweet if they bungie did a culll of duty or microsoft let them do a versus of some sort
Why am I not surprised that Activision is getting so desperate into having a partnership with bungie of all people. I guess whoever is running Activision think they can benefit this somehow.
You said Guitar Hero Master Chief addition, which sounds a lot like Activision using the Halo IP. Furthermore, Activision cannot make Bungie develop a Call of Duty, they do not own them.
