So by now, I’m fairly sure you’ve heard that Tim Schafer isn’t exactly having an easy time finding a publisher willing to sign on for a second Psychonauts game. However, when Schafer asked if any millionaires were happy to lend a hand on twitter, he caught one’s attention. With a discussion between both Schafer and Notch moving elsewhere along with Steven Dengler, who’s already funded PC/Mac ports of Psychonauts and Costume Quest, things are definitely looking up for Double Fine fans.

My maths is by no means sound, but going by what Minecraft’s own site says, Mojang is sitting on something like $116,535,465, or £73,593,600, minus reinvestment in Scrolls, Minecon, pay for the other developers at Mojang, continued development of Minecraft and whatever else Notch has decided to use the money for. Double Fine‘s new focus on DLG and shorter games with more focus on the mechanics won’t push the development costs up dramatically, but exactly how well Psychonauts 2 really could preform is a little hazy now.

The game certainly has more of a grounding with the fairly dedicated, if small, fanbase of the original. But, it’s still an unfamiliar title for many gamers out there and, of course, likely downloadable, meaning that we can’t exactly expect any impulse buys or promotional offers, or, likely, a substantial marketing campaign to attract people who haven’t played the original. This being Double Fine, the quality of the title is all but certain, but other publishers haven’t been eager to crack open their purses for a reason.

Here’s hoping for more news soon. Until then though, what do you think about the possibility of seeing another Psychonauts? Have you played the original? And what are you thoughts on Notch‘s involvement? Are you excited to see someone willing to pony up the cash, or are you hoping that his influence stays purely financial? Let your comments be known and voice your interest!

Anno 2070, a strategy game from Ubisoft‘s library, is one of the titles that unintentionally got affected by this move.

Ubi already has, in my book, a bad track record when it comes down to Digital Rights Management. What is your take on the latest DRM drown?

With David Jaffe departing from Eat Sleep Play, what will become of Twisted Metal? Jaffe states what his ideas are for the future.

Earlier this week, Eat Sleep Play’s David Jaffe announced that he will be departing from the company after the release of the upcoming Twisted Metal. Speaking with Joystiq at DICE, Jaffe states that he will stay with the company post-launch, until the end of March, in order to fix any bugs and make any necessary tweaks.

“I will be with Eat Sleep Play until we finish what’s called the ‘maintenance contract’ we have and have been working on with Sony,” Jaffe said. “That will allow us, post-launch, to stay and address issues that there’s no way we can know of. Cleaning things up in terms of balance, bugs, tuning, tweaks.”

In terms of new projects, Jaffe is looking into both console and browser-based games, and even a “guerrilla-style” survival horror game.

“There’s a survival-horror genre in there, a real low-budget survival horror, kinda guerilla film making style. Not in terms of the look, but in terms of that kind of financing and that kind of production.”

Regarding Twisted Metal, Jaffe states there are currently no plans for DLC or a sequel.

Sony has announced that by the 7th of February, they will turn Playstation Network into Sony Entertainment Network. What does that mean for PlayStation gamers? Read on.

Sony has announced that by the 7th of February, they will turn Playstation Network into Sony Entertainment Network.
This will go along side their new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Here is the why:

“This transition is based on Sony’s goal to enhance its unique digital entertainment offering. As a series of these activities Sony started last September, PlayStation Network will be aligned with “Sony Entertainment Network.” This helps us get closer to our goal of establishing a global comprehensive network platform of services across games, movies, music and more, all accessible from one convenient account.”

All fun and good, but wasn’t Sony in a pickle with their Privacy Policy? And now they are advancing this new stage of their Privacy Policy? Is it me, or do I smell something burning?

Anyways, this name change at least gives us a view of what Sony wants for the future. One account, one goal, one target for Anonymous… Ho wait, did I say that last thing out loud?

Nintendo of Europe has announced they have formed a party with free-hotspot.com to spread their spotpass carnage to the pockets of European 3DS owners with free access to over 5,000 Wi-Fi Hotspots. McDonald’s, Burger King, KFC, and Subway, as well as the in the Ibis and Etap Hotel chains were included in the list.

The partners will support 3DS owners with even more locations for users to receive spotpass content and updates, as well as send them through functions such as the popular new letterbox app. And of course, you can get free w-fi from them too.

With a Subway just a short walk on campus from my classroom, I’m personally happy to hear this, getting new ghost data for games like Mario Kart 7 and ? blocks for Super Mario 3D Land have had me getting more used to carry my 3DS around for more than just streetpass. But what do you European axeheads think of the new partnership? Do you enjoy the streetpass/spotpass functions, or are you possibly just stirring to it?
