Alongside the news that Christopher Nolan’s latest film Inception has just grossed $753 million worldwide, Variety also quotes the director on where he’d like to take the property next:
“We are looking at doing is developing a videogame based on the world of the film, which has all kinds of ideas that you can’t fit into a feature film. That’s something we’ve been talking about and are looking at doing long term, in a couple of years.”
Film tie-in game? Nothing new there. Film tie-in game actively developed by the director of said film? Less-common but not unheard of (unless you were fortunate enough to have never heard of The Matrix games). Still, its interesting to see a director like Nolan exploring video games (as opposed to television, for instance) as the medium to further explore the ideas wouldn’t fit or work in a feature film.
Are games starting to get some long-overdue respect or just Hollywood’s leftovers? Sound off below!

I think I’ve died and gone to heaven.
So he noticed how much money the movie brought in… and he wants a video game… hmmmm…
I will remain sceptical, like I always am. I haven’t bought a movie tie-in game in a long time, with good reason… because they usually suck. The last one I can remember buying was ‘Scarface: The World is Yours’ on the PS2. And that was actually a pretty good movie tie-in game.
Maybe if they spend some time on the game to make sure that it’s done right and just don’t hire some random developer and tell them they’ve got 6 months to make the game… like with most movie tie-in games.
rule no1 to make a playable game. plus.. if they would spend 10% of what they earned from the movie it might work.. tho they are trying to use “inception” name just to attract people.. and achieve brainless buy
Sounds great but when I think of Inception game I think of implemented map editor (creating a dream), terramorphing (changing a dream), different playable classes (e.g. extractor, forger and so on) and whole lotta things to do inside those dreams.
Bioshock + Crysis + GTA kind of game.
Kinda hard to do, don’t you think?
if anyone can do it, christopher nolan can
But im still apprehensive. These movie-based games have all been bad and I dont want anything to cheapen nolan. Just because he’s amazing at making movies doesnt mean he understands what it takes to make a good video game. He never has to deal with interaction, just immersion and making awesome plots (im not just talking about inception. memento and the following are great too)
I cant really picture how ud make a game out of inception tho. Most of the tension was from if they’d get caught inside the dream and if their scheme would work…would seem kind of superficial if it was just an action/shooter game taking place inside of dreams
I guess im more skeptical than optimistic even though its christopher nolan..
I seem to be with most of you on this. I’m apprehensive at the thought of another movie to game failure. However, if he actually were to garner a good studio to create something with some substance and not a ” get me a game within 4 months so I can slap my movies title on it and get whatever I can from it” scenario. Just have to wait and see I suppose.
I think it can be cool… The movie is already out and made a shitload of money so its not like theyre gonna be pressing hard to try and get it out before release. I’m sure they want to release it while theres still interest surrounding it but who knows. Maybe somebody will respect the process.
I hope this game does not suck. I would love to play a game based in this world. I hope Nolan gets a good company to make the game(not Sega). I want the dvd to come out soon and hen we will see about the game.
I hope it’s better than the movie.. So it wouldn’t be total crap..
Not every storyline is suited to a Videogame.
I am very skeptical about this. Why mess with a good thing.
Maybe if its done like Heavy rain, but still very skeptical.
You hit it on the nose my brotha.
If he’s just looking for money it’ll be a flop, but if he actually sees this game as a way to elaborate on an deepen the concepts in the movie, it will be a hit.
