Just kidding, this game’s never coming out.
But for real, Gearbox Software, just ahead of the opening of PAX 2010, announced to the world that the game-that-will-not-die is finally on the home stretch after more than a decade in development. Duke Nukem Forever, the sequel to 1996′s Duke Nukem 3D has been “close to release” countless times since it was originally announced in 1997. Since then, DNF has spawned a string of release dates that never panned out, some of the most effortless humor that’s ever existed, and a fierce legal battle between publisher Take-Two and original-developer 3D Realms.
After hitting financial trouble in 2009, 3D Realms closed its doors and entered legal proceedings with Take-Two over the game they should have delivered more than ten years earlier. Though we still don’t know the exact details, we know now that Gearbox got involved shortly thereafter, taking over development of Duke Nukem Forever in late ’09; presumably after a settlement was reached between 3D Realms and Take-Two.
With over a decade worth of assets to work from, Gearbox was able to make short work of things; showing off a playable demo today at PAX. Described as being in the ‘polishing’ phase, Duke Nukem Forever, featuring both single and multiplayer modes, is slated for release sometime in the next year on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360. CEO Randy ‘The Man’ Pitchford said that Gearbox will announce more details concerning ‘the future of the IP’ during their panel at PAX 2010.
Is this just the beginning of a new Duke franchise? Will Gearbox announce a release date, only to delay it by one day; just for old time’s sake? Are you freaking out that Duke Nukem Forever is finally coming out? Or is it just to- little-too-late for the thirteen year old franchise? Sound off in the comments below!

Ha.. This is good news.. I’m not really terribly excited, but if the game turns out good, and that insane humor and over-the-top manliness is still in tact, then I’ll definitely pick it up.
Something tells me the hype for this game is gonna kill it.
No matter how good the developers are, the expectations are just to high, for example people want this game to be BETTER than a killzone/gears of war Game.
Nothing more wrong in my opoinion. Even if this game will suck, everyone will buy it. Because it’s Duke. It’s such a piece of gaming history… Wouldn’t be surprised if it would outsell Modern Warfare 2.
sign me up!
I will buy it, put it in a crystal box on the living room
and show it to my friends when they come over.
yea, i hope they do something cool with it and update it alot. im sure it needs alot of polish…. and poke some fun at how long i took to come out also. lol.
This game is to gaming what DETOX is to hip-hop.
while I look forward it, I still doubt it’ll drop.
I really hope that when it comes time to release the game they change the name, say its a different game, and say Duke Nukem Forever is still in development.
hahaha, finally.
wow, will it bring back moments or be it’s own thing?
cheers
I can’t believe this might actually see the light of day. If Gearbox can stay on track, they might actually pull this off. However, if they set a release date and then delay it, for ANY reason, I think it’ll kill any good feelings for this game.
Even if this game turns out to be completely rotten, I can still see myself buying it just to put the whole thing to bed in my mind. This is the end of an era. May it go out with a hearty “Hail to the King, Baby”… even though I still think Bruce Campbell should make a cameo appearance as Ash Williams and rip Duke to pieces at the end of the game… and then of course the game ends with one line. “Groovy”
I don’t really understand why everyone says it can’t live up to the hype. I mean we all know that there’s a good chance it won’t be an excellent game although we’re hyped about it. Hype doesn’t mean that one thinks this is going to be great. I mean seriously, hands up, who’s thinking that this is going to be a great game without a doubt? I don’t, mostly because of the fact that besides Duke Nukem 3D, there hasn’t really been any great game of the series. Sure, it’s Gearbox now, but who knows how much of the game’s actually made by them.
The phrase “The game can’t live up to it’s hype” makes no sense, because hype is not something that reflects expectations. Sure, high expectations can help the growth of hype, but you can have a lot of hype with low expectations as well. This is a prime example for that. I am really hyped about Forever, because it’s the return of one of the most iconic characters in gaming, if not the most iconic, but I don’t really think the game is going to be especially good.
Duke will never die!!!!!
Let’s hope it’s not a zombie…
Nah, for me it comes like 10 years too late. I am not interested anymore. The world moved on. Release it, let us dream our nostalgia, how good it was back then and put it finally to rest.
I doubt it will outsell MW2:

And I doubt it will be better than the original.
If this game delivers cheesy over the top 80s one-liners and action then I will consider the game a succes and definitely buy & play it.
The king is back (again), baby!
Holy crap! i’ve waited for this game like FOREVER!
Day one buy for me, just for nostalgia.
Excited. I just think it is the nostalgia kicking in, but I like fps that are not all run and gun and shoot everything. I like different things.
This summer you can choose Christian louboutin wedges. A pair of beautiful cheap Christian Louboutin wedges can keep you feeling effortlessly fabulous every day this summer. These can be matched with casual jeans, but these can also be dressed up with a great yellow dress.
To be honest, I dont care if this comes out or not. I’ve never played the first game, or by any extend to give it a proper thought. The only thing I remember that its the joke of the industry. If the game is good ill might check it out, but for the rest, mweh.
What do comes in mind, is that Gearbox reasonbly fast is manages to get the demo done, after the real announcement. I wonder how far gone 3D Realms actually was with the game, and how much time and effort Gearbox had to put in the game to bring it to completion.
I have a feeling this game will not live up to the hype. Maybe i’m just thinking to much about it. i guess we will see soon enough.
I think it will be the exact opposite of what most of u are saying… i think knowing the ps3, 360, pc tech in its current age is perfect for the polish… but i also think that 3d realms engine (its latest iteration) is better looking than anything gearbox could have, or better yet HAVE ever made in the past…
lets hope gearbox recognizes the tech is better than most of theirs, and they just put their cherry on top… let it be an 85 – 90 percent 3d realms game is all I’m saying… and from all the interviews Andy has scattered through the interwebs on this topic, its sounds like he’s going to do just that…
The game is built on Unreal tech, nothing Gearbox can’t handle seeing as they’re experts on the Unreal engines. Yes Duke Nukem uses a branched of customized Unreal 2.5 engine at the moment but its not any more different than say Call of Duty which originates from the Quake Engine.
Will buy this just for nostalgia, and remember it’s not been in actual development for 12 years when it comes out, the latest iteration is around 4-5 years old.. it’s been scrapped and rebooted several times.
Anyone doubting this game is less than 20 years old. Duke Nukem 3D is one of the greatest FPS games ever made. This game looks as good as the original (fucking awesome) trailer for the game. It’s not to be compared with Modern Warfare, or Battlefield or Killzone or any other game out right now. It is completely different. The only games that compared with it (Serious Sam and Shadow Warrior mainly) died a long time ago and there hasn’t been anything like Duke in roughly ten years. (TimeSplitters kind of filled that void, but where is TS now?)
This will be the manliest manly movie made since Duke Nukem 3D, and if you’re not interested, get the fuck out… girl.
The release of this game is like everyone watching you unveil the cure for cancer: if things go wrong, instant flak. If things go “meh”, flak. If the game turns out to be awesome, …there will still be those f’ers who feel the need for Steee-ve, and start trowing monkey s***.
Honestly, i think there’s so much anticipation and bad mojo around this whole thing that “The” Duke don’t stand a change…
IF the game is released, sure, people will buy it…but don’t get me wrong; that IS the main reason for the heartbroken mob to demand a stoning, because those AAA dollars wrongfully spent always leave that cold..bitter void in your soul.
