In their continuing effort to combat used game sales, EA has announced that they will be issuing one-time use
That means if you want to buy Tiger Woods PGA Tour 11, NCAA Football 11, NHL 11, Madden NFL 11, or NBA 11, you had better buy it new. Because if you don’t, you’ll have to pay an extra $10 to play it online. If you want specifics as to how your favorite game will be effected by the Online Pass, you can check out the official website here.
This didn’t seem like such a big deal when they did it with Mass Effect 2, because it was add-on content that was at issue. But now they are carving out already established pieces of the game. It makes me wonder how long it will be before this leaves the sports division and moves to other genres. How long before you buy BFBC 2 used and have to pay extra for the multiplayer?
Anyone have an opinion on this?

I think this is the biggest piece of crap I ever heard of. Sure I understand that sales are down because of used game sales. But EA is helping feed the beasts of the industry that sell used games…like gamestop…the give gamestop exclusive dlc for selling the game but then say “well wait a sec, i dont think you should be able to sell used copies of our games”. Problem is they dont say that…the consumer ultimately pays! And the rich get richer. This is the only industry that this is happening. I mean can you imagine if you sold your car and Chevrolet was like, well you need to pay us $100 if you wanna drive it. “I think once you purchase something it is yours. And in this instance it is not the case. Also not everyone can afford to buy used games so they rely on trade in value for new purchases…obviously this is gonna make your used game worth less for trade in as well. Sooooo if I trade in my nhl 2011 game to buy a new copy of nhl 2012…then I get less for trade in and then someone else has to pay extra to use it!?! How insane does that sound!
Man!…This womps!!
WTF is wrong with EA? I fail to see how charging an extra $10 to play online or similar if their games are sold used is legal. Maybe we as consumers don’t want to waste our money on their titles new because we don’t feel that the already ridiculous $60 price tag is worth it. Who the hell is itching to play Tiger Woods on-line anyway? I sure as hell don’t. Not unless they add the fight scenes with his wife (as portrayed in South Park). And how long before this trend is enacted by Capcom or the rest of them. We as consumers need to let EA know that this is not acceptable by NOT wasting our hard earned money on their titles. Screw EA!

EA is so greedy. Honestly, do these publishers really need to milk their costumers this much?
First, I thought DLC is great for people who wants post-game content and I gladly paid it. Then they start making DLC that should be part of the game. DLCs like costumes and maps and weapons are ridiculous. And I would never give them a penny.
Secondly. What’s the point of buying a used game if I end up paying a similar amount of money? As a result, I think most used gamer may simply ignore the game totally.
The more I think about this. The more EA pisses me off. Instead of making a new game, they simply update the roster and make minor improvements and then charges us $59.99…….You can SUCK IT, EA!
The only DLC worth the money are stuff like Dragon Age and ME2. Give me solid contents instead of useless content!
Fuck EA as A staff, A Publishing Company, and A Muthafuckin crew’.
This is complete shit. This not only screws over people that prefer to buy used games but also people that buy new EA games. Say you don’t like the game you bought new but you know a friend that does. Well there shit out of luck because then they have to pay 10 buck to play online. Same with if your going to go rent an EA brand game. So you spend 10 bucks for online play that you may only use tell you return your rented game and thats it? Thats just BS right there.
I’ve seen people on other boards like on IGN saying this is a good thing because devs don’t make a profit off of used games. Well they already made there profit off the person that bought it new in the first place. So if devs should make a profit off used games, then if I were to sell a game to a friend for 10 dollars does that mean the devs should get 5 bucks or more just because they made it meanwhile I already paid full retail. I think not.
Oh its finally happened parts of the game are being removed and given back as dlc unless you buy it new. I understand this is all about getting a cut of pre owned sales but this seems a shi**y way of doing it.
Oh my, what a truck load of BS this is. Lucky me I don’t like any of the sports EA is publishing as a game, or any of their other franchises. But this still sucks big time, because if EA gets away with this, other publishers may hop on the bandwagon and do the same BS.
I dont like this one bit. Some very ambitious lawyer is going to have to get on this and sue for this to be reversed.
This has the potential to set a precedent for pre-owned items across the board. DVD/Blu Rays that cannot be played until a fee. Music that cannot be ripped from a CD without a fee.
Those are just shoddy examples off the top of my head, but you get the idea. This needs to be halted now to keep it from spreading to other mediums.
lol, and if you down with EA Fuck you too!
1 more question…what if you wanna bring this to your friends house to play it? Gotta anti up $10 or what?!?!
Since the code you’d get would only be a one time download then yeah. You would have to tell your friend that he has to pay $10 to simply to let him try out the online portion of a game.
I agree with Publishers that retailers are getting too many slices of the pie that rightfully should go to the guys who baked it. I do not think this is the right way of going about it. I don’t have a problem with Alan Wake offering the first DLC free to those that buy the game new as the used game members still get to experience the full game and I think this is an excellent way to do it. Offer DLC (or additional content) free to those that buy new – it’s an excellent incentive. However, restricting content on the original game from used buyers might be a bit much.
I hate gamestop, I can understand why EA is doing this, but all its going to do is hurt the gamer. If EA really wants to put a stop to the used game market they need to come up with some way of trading in games though EA. You can get EA credit that you can spend on games on there site, new or used.
Another thing that would help is STOP GIVING GAMESTOP EXCLUSIVE CONOTENT!! All it does is help there sales.
I hate that when I walk into gamestop I see a new game for $60 and the used copy for $54, its total BS and I just wish EA’s intentions were actually to try and fix that problem not get a slice of the pie, like you guys said.
