Rouse the Fire Worm, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In this week’s skirmish we take a look at the recent news of an Uncharted film in development, the quiet launch of Battlefield Heroes, EA’s new deal with Dr. Pepper, and the surprise acquisition of Id Software by Bethesda’s parent company.
In the main course this week, we mull over EA’s decision to merge BioWare and Mythic into a single entity and ponder whether this will create some real competition for Blizzard and WoW. Next up, we examine the recent news that Chinatown Wars is headed for the PSP and debate if Sony’s handheld can serve up a real challenge to the DS in 2010.
The Battle Cry of the Week goes to Hulu for blocking access from the PS3, Mass Effect for DLC that should have been out six months ago, Max Payne 3 for changing everything that made the series good, and The Last Guardian for reminding us that games can be more than simple shoot-’em-ups.
Remember to sound off below and next week, we’ll pick a new comment to become the next Member Battle Cry! Until then, stay sharp!

Hulu is much worse than just what has been mentioned. Instead of expanding as they continuously promise, they are contracting. The EU service? Never launched. YouTube is beating them on that already. AttackOfTheThumbsQuote

My Battle Cry (first time posting):
Goes to the MMO space. I have been a WoW player for a long time and an MMO player even longer. I feel that one of the main issues for MMO’s gaining ground in the space has to do more with production value than with the distinct social identities of any particular MMO. Since the launch of WoW I have played all the major Fantasy MMOs that have been launched. One thing that Warhammer, Age of Conan, and Tabula Rosa have had in common is that they shipped broken. Anyone that played those games from launch can attest to that. The games were full of tracking issues and glitches. I know even WoW started that way, however at the time that is how all MMO’s played. As WoW evolved the gameplay became mostly fixed. It is hard to start a new MMO that is glitched out after playing a relatively smooth MMO like WoW.
The only game that was launched as a fixed game was Lord of the Rings Online. And that game is doing particularly well compared to other post WoW MMO launches. What competitors need to start doing to gain a healthy following in the MMO space is launch as a fixed game. That is the biggest aspect that companies need to emulate from WoW; not the play style but the ability to play the game for more than an hour before getting pissed that the game is broken. Let the title and subject bring in new players, however to keep WoW players playing your game you need to ship a finished game, not a game that was rushed to beat another WoW expansion. My battle cry
Why do many people like me feel obligated to like a game just because everyone one else says it’s great?
My games are Bioshock and Oblivion, I know their great games but when I played them I just didn’t
like them. I know there is incredible value in these games but I have problems getting into the games
if the game doesn’t feel right the first hour I play it. Sometimes it has to do with gameplay, other times
gameplay etc. Just wanted ur opinion on this, because first I thought it was that the main characters didn’t
speak witch I really don’t like, but then again Dead Space did the same thing and I thought that game was great. BacbiQuote
My battle cry goes out to all the so called gammers out there that only play games to get a high gammerscore or get achivements/trophies or abuse or cheat on psn/xbl.
I thought the hole point of games was to have fun not to get stressed or shout at people. I was in a clan for 6 months and i more or less got told what to do i came home turned on my xbox and got told what to do for 3 hours and it was no fun. People that mod there controllers and games just to get better leaderbord scores. my battle cry is just to the people that do this and just to say when your were a kid you didnt go out and play on your bike or with guns becuase it was boring you did it becuase it was fun, so why should games be differnt.
p.s. you guys rock you three and the three on the english inside xbox are very funny hope to meet you at E3 in a few years =]. Y O Y O Y O ARE MY CHROMOSOMESQuote
My Battle Cry goes out to DICE and EA with their delaying of Battlefield 1943 and the lack of information on it. Unfortunately, keeping your fans in the loop is becoming very scarce in today’s developers. We’ve heard nothing from Remedy about Alan Wake until E3. Many presumed the game to be day. Honestly, how hard is it to give us a brief update with a few screenshots. Or in the case of DICE, how hard is it to give a set date for a game that is apparently done? OK I understand Arcade games need certification on both PSN and XBL but a date shouldn’t be that hard to come by. If companies like Rockstar can manage to grab the date (GTAIV: TLAD) from Microsoft, then surely EA could do the same. leburnQuote

My Battle Cry goes out to Transformers Revenge of The Fallen. I was extremely dissapointed with this movie because i thought that since there were twice as many transformers there was going to be more robot dialogue and story. But no instead we got half an hour of megan fox running in slow motion, spoiler warning: there was this one seen at the end in Egypt were sam and Mikaela were running and they fell and the camera went into a slow-mo closeup of Mikaela falling and getting a full closeup of mega foxs tits, now to me the way Micheal Bay has chosen to basically show off how hot megan fox is ridiculous. In the first movie it wasnt bad it was just that one shot of here leaning over bumblebee nut now there was the shot were she was leaning over the bike, and all of the slow-mo shots of her running. Instead of Transformers Revenge of The Fallen it should have been called Transformers Revenge of The Bra. To end this Epic Cry i just have to say when did movies have to have such non-sense like this, if they make a third transformers movie they should just have megan fox naked and then just end it.

My Battle Cry goes out to fanboys. What the hell is a Fanboy, and why do people act like that? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a forum bout or heard a podcast discussion about fanboys and thought “oh yes, this person is absolutely committed to their system or company of choice and is supporting their claim with legitimate arguments”. All I think is: “Jeez this kid must be 12 years old. Who the hell ONLY likes games published on a particular platform or developed by a particular company?”
Case in point- Blizzard. I’m a huge blizzard fan, I played the hell out of Diablo and Diablo II but on that same note I can’t stand playing WoW, it’s just not my cup of tea. The point though, is that I don’t go around on forums making an asshat of myself talking up blizzard and waving my e-penis in the faces of other users just to get a rouse out of them. It reminds me of those annoying little middle school boys who just ran around bothering the little girls pretending to hate them when they’re really flirting.
Same things goes for consoles, those fanboys are the worst. Who the hell in their right mind would ONLY like Xbox or PS3 (or Wii for that matter)? I played the hell out of Halo 3 on live, for a few months that’s just about all I did in the dorms. Then SSBB came out and we played smash every night. Now if I’m playing something late at night it’s usually a downloadable game on any of the three systems. I cant imagine someone finding a way to justify to themselves that their console is the best and the others are useless.
I like my PS3 for it’s smooth look and feel and ease of navigation. I like sony’s style, it’s very sleek and clean. I also loved playing MGS4, Uncharted, Valkyria Chronicles, Little Big Planet, and Killzone 2. And don’t even get me started on the great PSN games I’ve got. flOw, Flower, Echochrome, Pixel Junk Eden, etc.
The Xbox 360 has a fantastic online experience. Freaking everybody and their frat buddies are on Xbox live. Also Microsoft has their fair share of great exclusives like the Halo franchise, Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey, Gears of War, etc. And XBLA games like Braid and Portal are top notch.
The same can be said for the Wii. The only time I’ve ever gotten my parents into some kind of game is when I got my father to play Wii Bowling, and he kicked our asses! My mom and my younger sister have played Wii Sports and gotten on the Wii fit. Does anyone ever have some of their chick friends over and get online playing Halo 3? Hell No. My chick friends come over and we play SSBB, Wii Sports, Wario Ware, or Boom Blox. On top of that they have great games like Zelda and Super Mario Galaxy.
My battle cry boils down to this: Fanboy is a lazy term we use for ignorant soap box shouters who we really shouldn’t even be listening to in the first place. Anybody who’s a fanboy of anything is almost by unwritten definition ignorantly advocating something without adequate reason. In some places they’d call this person the village idiot or the doomsayer. On the internets, we call them Fanboys. Fucking idiots is what I call them, wastes of space and time. Too bad we cant stone people to death anymore… Uriel_51Quote
lol You all got me on that one. I’m my own worst enemy it would appear.
My battlecry goes out to Bethesda and their continuous support of Fallout 3 with numerous quality DLCs available. Its nice to see some real effort put into extra content when most of the DLC today is limited to a pack of extra multiplayer maps and that’s it. Good DLC lengthens the lifespan of a game, giving more enjoyment and satisfaction from your purchase. In an age were a lot of big name titles barely reach the ten hour mark, extra content is paramount in keeping the interest in your game alive as well as bulding a community. It just feels good to play a game you enjoy so much then have extra things come out for it so you have more to enjoy.
All in all its good from a business standpoint too as it breeds a more dedicated, content fanbase. Most of them will be more likely to purchase sequels or future products when they feel confident you will support it. I don’t know why more developers don’t try this but Kudos to Bethesda for figuring it out, no matter how you felt about Fallout 3. ContraQuote
My battlecry goes out to the team over at Realtime Worlds for giving us exactly what we want, which is news about All Points Bulletin. After E3, they started doing podcasts about the game that they release every week, which is awesome.
Sure, it’s not always on time, but it is very interesting, and I think it is something that all developers should try to do pre-release. HampQuote

my BC goes out to this gen’s consoles. somehow a media shiz-storm has blown up and i ever seem to read about is PS3 v 360. i can’t seem to jump on a forum without it quickly decending in to fanboy flame-wars with at least two guys spouting off crap that is totally off topic and also only really half the facts twisted to suit their arguments. the net result of this is that i contribute far less often than i would like, and i’m sure it’s the same for a lot of gamers. i’m am a $%& fanboy but i know my console of preference doesn’t deliver in a lot of areas and i’d rather hear more critical and constructive comments about how to improve things as opposed to BS from butt-hoops, cept the way things are i find myself steering clear of forums for the most part. a big part of the gaming community stays quite when they’ve probably got more useful stuff to contribute than afore mentioned butt-hoops. ain’t right damn it. tommo121081Quote
My battle cry goes out to cheating/unlocking cheats. Back in the days, I played my games serious for the first time, after that, I looked on the internet for cheats or how to unlock something that would add more fun to the game.
For me, this gave the game more replay value.
These days its all about the achievements, when I go to my usual cheat site, the only thing they post at the games is how to unlock achievements.
This really hit me when I was playing prototype, after completing the game, It would have been awesome to get some immortality, so I could go on a 24/7 rampage without caring about my health. (Its just more fun, smashing things up then running all the time to consume more people for health)
Games feel empty these days. FrankthetankQuote

My Battle Cry goes out to todays graphics. Under these last years, the raw graphics haven’t changed a whole lot. Just look at todays market. The graphics have totally stepped aside in this console war. Best selling console is a real dump, graphically speaking. And just look at this year E3, nothing impressed graphically! The most impressing things didn’t even show any graphics, like project natal and wii motion +.

Also, play call of juarez online, I’m sick of call of duty and halo 3 being the only options on xbox live! DrunkenPistoleroQuote
Hey guys,
My Battle Cry of the week goes out to InstantAction.com.
Being a PC gamer who started out as such is thanks to the Starsiege / Tribes universe of the late 90’s. I feel like InstantAction is really catering to bring these types of games back in the spotlight by a different intuitive mean.
People instantly tend to put off web browser based games as “Crap”, but little have yet to try it. Well I have…and its actually not bad at all. Sure, you wont get high end graphics from the new generation engines of today, but the fun factor is still there!
Props to the team at InstantAction as it really seems they have something going on, not only by creating their own games (Pretty sure this is GarageGames) but also hosting smaller company’s products, allowing users to experience it on the browser that would otherwise never give it a look.
Could this be the future of streamline general public 3d PC gaming if it catches. Keep in mind that because it is web based, it has less consumer boundries such as the Steam client. No client is required and no LONG downloads just to TRY a game. BullShattQuote
My battle cry goes out to so called “exclusive games” or “exclusive content”. Even though the game comes out exclusive for a console at first it eventually always gets ported to the other ones and sometimes with added bonuses like the bioshock port for the ps3 wich can make you feel like getting slapped in the face for getting it when it first came out for the first console. Then when the game is actually multiplatform they make exclusive dlc for one console and the others have to wait like a year or maybe not get it at all which sucks hard. SuperSaiyanSquirrelQuote

My battle cry goes out to gearbox, and how they are pretty much under the radar on some pretty huge projects. like Aliens : colonial marines and Borderlands. Its good in the sense they are not pushed to put out a crappy bugged game, but when it comes out im afraid it will be a flop in the sales because of that fact. So i think the should give us some more on borderlands (at least) before october when people are like “wtf is this when did they make this”. Because i have asked my friends “hey, u hyped about borderlands” and they reply “wtf is borderlands?”…… and the game is coming out in four months. Blackwing 81Quote
My battle cry goes out to EA and the rumor that they might release the face-button control scheme for Fight Night Round 4 as a DLC, one that we might have to pay for.
Dear EA, you coy, scoundrel little bitch.
I am very disappointed in you. I truly thought that you’ve changed. What with the release of The Sims 3 and FNR4, both with some of the greatest innovations in either series; and Battlefield Heroes is excellent. But just when I trust you enough to turn my back for a second, you took a big, fat, black DLC and shoved it right up my PSN. Really, EA? A control scheme? That is something you put in an update!
So fuck you, EA, and fuck your going back to the cash-in habbits. And if this rumor is wrong, then well fuck you for not making the Battlefield Heroes lunch big enough. somedude1523Quote
My battlecry goes to Ubisoft Montpellier and rayman 4.
When in the hell are they going to make a new rayman platforming game? I am 15 years old and I like many hardcore games, but sometimes I need a break and then I play rayman. I have been a fan for years and the first RRR (Rayman Raving Rabbids) was good. But they should have stopped doing the mini-games and make some kick ass adventure/platformer game.
I have read in an interview on IGN that rayman will be back soon. But when is soon? 2010? 2012 (apocalypse)? I mean they should have made a trailer at least. Sjoerdkoala inda houseQuote

The only thing you “have” to pay for are the items you can purchase to customize you character and althought i never buy that kind of stuff i did on Battlefield heroes in order to support their initiative …

Hey guys, love the podcast! Look forward to it every week!
So here’s my 1st Battlecry:
My battlecry goes out to the makers of the latest Indiana Jones game Staff of Kings (Wii version). What the hell happened? I remember seeing some screen shots and video of this game (which appeared to be the ps3 or 360 ver of it) a few years ago and it looked great. The articles about it sounded cool and I was really looking forward to what I thought would be a good game. So…a month or so before the games release they decide to dump the ps3 and 360 versions cause they don’t have enough time to finish them and instead leave us with a horrible Wii version with wonky controls and bugs whose only semi redeeming quality is the unlockable LucasArts Indiana Jones Fate of Atlantis PC game from 1992. So again…what in the hell happened? I would have rather had the game delayed for another year and put out the 360 or ps3 versions of the game I thought it would be than to play anymore of the Wii version. They should seal all the copies of that game up in a box like the Ark of the Covenant and stow it away where no one can ever find it ever again! FrostyMaGeeQuote
My Battle Cry goes out to all the gamers who immediately get upset and cry bloody murder when it’s announced that an upcoming game doesn’t have a specific feature. For some folks the exclusion of one feature or another automatically constitutes a bad thing, failure or laziness on the part of the developers. I would think though that a game should offer only things that make sense in it’s context. If a game for example is heavily centered on a single character (e.g. Kratos in “God of War”), it makes little sense to include 2 player co-op gameplay. And I can’t think of something that would tear me faster out of the mood and story of Heavy Rain than a pop-up declaring something like:
“Trophy Earned ! You brought an umbrella before stepping into the heavy rain! Good for you, have a cookie!”.
So even if trophies/achievements, multiplayer etc. are all the rage these days, think twice before wishing they were included in every game that hits the shelves. Sometimes it’s better for a game to just drop those features entirely; and not having them is always better then having them implemented half-assed. Don RapatzoneQuote
My battlecry goes out to all the idiots in the gaming press who can’t figure out that Metroid: Other M has no 2-d elements whatsoever, even after several interviews with the developers and big shots from Nintendo.
I mean really, where the hell are they pulling this from? (besides their rear end) Okay, so she dodged to the side -once-….a lot of characters in 3rd person games dodge to the side. (See Castlevania Curse of Darkness if you don’t believe me. You side dodge more than you actually attack in battles in that game)
So please, gaming press, shut the hell up. This is not a new 2d game. It’s a 3rd/1st person game.
Hell, after Super, did we really need a new 2d Metroid? I’m not complaining, mind you, as I loved MZM and Fusion, but once you make perfection, where the hell can you go from there?
Answer: Try to make perfection in 3d of course. karkashanQuote
My Epic battle cry is short but it goes to Splinter Cell: Convict and Ubisoft. Why oh why are you guys trying to fix something that isn’t broken? I’m a huge fan of the Splinter cell series and I love the fact that they are very unforgiving games, you make one mistake and its all over. They want to change that so that the player can always fight his or her way out. They say that they are doing this make the player feel like a special agent but in my opinion it sounds like they are trying to make the player feel like a one man army like you are in so many other games.
I think they are just doing this to sell some more copys to kids that likes third person action games…
Ps. I’m all for change and all that and I do play action games but this is a series that is close to my heart and I hate to see it come to this.
*Runs of to play Arma 2* SpazQuote
my battle cry is about mmos
is it me or does it take a new game to come out or other mmos to do something different before games like wow and city of heroes change their whole stance on the way they do things. ie champions online coming out and the customization of powers and now city of heroes is copying that. or city of heroes and wow totaly changing their whole stance on faction switching-with blizz soon to be alowing it and city of heroes with going rogue. let me point out that both companies have stated numerous times that this would never ever ever happen john morinQuote
My battle cry hmmmm… well mine just goes to games in the recession.
I’ve walk through the loads of games and DLC offered with games and one thing keeps annoying me something fierce, why are these games still 59.99 in the recession?
You think someone would have blown the whistle on this whole charging ten bucks more for so called “next-gen” games.
I believe if your gonna shaft the gaming populous with DLC that isnt worth the money (cough) RE5 versus mode (cough) then the games need to take a price drop 55.99 before tax is a helluva lot better than 59.99 or 89.99 if you bought a collector’s edition.
To put it mildly… your gaming community is too broke to buy high ass games, developers.
yeah you need to make money but damn. a gamers gotta eat too right? bring the price down til the economy gets better. DJ RoninQuote
My battly cry goes out to you (yeah, you Tony, Daniel and Brent).
I’ve been listening to epic battle cry ever since it was first shown on gametrailers.com (and enjoyed it), but only now have I realized your tremendous usage of the phrase “you know”. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like I’d expect professionalism in every aspect of the show, after all that’s one of the reasons why I like it. Also I wouldn’t want to tell you how to do your job or anything like that. It’s just something I wanted you to know.
Also, to illustrate it a little bit clearer (and because of overwhelming boredom), I put together the “you knows” of this podcast right here:
http://download321.filefront.com/xgbucuhjx5xg/you+know.mp3
That would be 96 “you knows” in around 30 minutes of talking, which means an average of one “you know” every 18,75 seconds. red_nutriaQuote

My battle cry goes out to Bethesda and their ability to produce entertaining worthwhile DLC for Fallout 3.
Not only have Operation Anchorage, The Pitt, and Broken Steel provided fallout 3 fans with insane amounts of fun, they have provided a service that many games are unable to do, and that is essentially adding on full new chapters and areas to a game that was already very good (in my opinion of course). My Battle Cry goes out to 2D games like The King of Fighters XII or BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger. Games like these are a prime example on what games should be about. Even though it’s in 2D and fighting games, the graphics looks ridiculous, plus think of other game types that could be 2D. With animation like that it, looks like a animated movie (which is a plus).
It seems most companies in United States think if they jump to 3D games more people will buy them depending on what they publish like Sonic the Hedgehog (Yeah, too bad that killed his lovable series though. THX SEGA!). Meanwhile, near Japan or Korea stick to 2D games and they still look good.
Just saying 3D gaming isn’t always the best way to go, unless the company knows where to go with it. MajorDude421Quote
