Raise the banner and unleash the slaughter, its time for another Skirmish of EpicBattleCry! This week, we check out the newly announced Rockstar PSN storefront and the UMD titles headed to it, muse over Dragon Age Journeys, the new Flash tie-in game from BioWare and EA, consider the official word from Sony of a 250GB PS3 headed our way soon, and shake with anticipation as we finally get a release date for Mass Effect 2.
First up this week, we examine recent statements by analyst Michael Pachter voicing concern over the threat a $99 iPod Touch could pose to game publishers. Next, we examine the controversy surrounding Brutal Legend and its marketing campaign. Did EA purposefully play down the real-time-strategy aspects of the game in its marketing?
The Battle Cry of the week goes to Castlevania: Rebirth, Torchlight, LEGO Indiana Jones 2, and calls on publishers to charge less for digital downloads than physical goods.
Remember to sound off below and each week will pick our favorite to become the next Member Battle Cry! Stay sharp.

My EpicBattleCry this weeks is a BIG THANK YOU.
I’ve been really sick for the last year and have had many problems. This show made me have something to look forward to, and I’ve probably listen to some episodes 8-10 times waiting for a new episode to come out.
I’m better now but I want to thank you guys for getting me through a difficult time in my life. BacbiQuote

My battle cry goes out to developers not allowing custom controls in video games for consoles. There have been many times where a game would not let you use customizable controls and it stopped me from playing games. It causes issues when switching to other games and it gets uncomfortable at times. I know that is a bit extreme and some people wouldn’t let this bother them but really, how hard is it to allow you to customize your controls in a game you’re playing. Having a game control the way you want just adds to the immersion of the game. There have been developers who have allowed this in games and I’ve had tons of fun with them. Games like Timesplitters, Resistance, Black, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, The Orange Box, most fighting games and even The Conduit, which also allows you to adjust dead zones, sensitivity and such. Then you have games like Riddick, Fear 2, Left for Dead, Gears of War, Uncharted, Bioshock, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Xbox Live Arcade (Where controls are very important, what if the player wants to use an arcade stick?) where you can’t change much of anything other than maybe stick function. Then you have other games like Killzone 2, Halo, and such which uses presets. If you went out of your way to make presets, why not just let the player make his or her own custom set so he or she can enjoy the game the way they want to? Granted some games are best played with a certain configuration, but let the player find that out for themselves. Give them the option to change it and if it doesn’t work, they can change it back, but I’m 100% sure that someone will like to play with their own control style. It’s like the developers don’t understand that not everyone is comfortable with the control set up that a developer has set by default. It doesn’t take that long to add custom controls, PC games have enjoyed this since the beginning of PC gaming pretty much due to being able to edit files. Developers need to add this option to every game for consoles, I’ve done coding in programs with controls before, it doesn’t take that long, it’s just lazy and annoying. I don’t know how many times I’ve messed up throwing a grenade, melee, taking cover and reloading when going from Call of Duty, to Halo then to Uncharted. Toph The EarthbenderQuote
my Battlecry of the weeks goes to … yes DLC … why do we have to pay for dlc on console if i get the dlc on pc for free ? all mass effect dlc for example r free for pc but for console once we have to pay -.- in generel the prices for console games r a lil bit over the top -.-

Hi guys great podcast
My Battlecry goes for the gaming industry in terms of piracy also touching the point of games price, piracy exist because its fare to the customer a game of 60 bucks its a really high overprice thing when in the industry in mass a single game can cost in the production process 10 bucks, now the thing is piracy its not going to disapear if companys dont adapt the same ways of acting, i mean why would i buy a 60 price game when a i can get my hands on the same game but at a really sweet price of …….5 bucks with the exact same tings as the original.
games should be made that way:
shiping costs? bullshit send one master copy to the country you want the game be sold and make some branch or company copy the amount of copies they whant
CDs? ok first of all the box. come on why do i need bookleg full of concept art that i will look once and thast it and full of instructions that will be explained in the game itself.
the gaming industry should and need to change into a more friendly way to the customer and its pocket.

My battlecry goes out to Activision and Infinty Ward
To all of my PC brothers say thank you to these douchebags that are dropping dedicated servers for a so called matchmaking service that is the NEW RAVE. Citing that one of the major reasons why they did this was to fight piracy. I say BULLSH*T,lets call it what it is, IW decided to get lazy and just port the 360 version of MW2 and all of its features to the PC so they could sell us DLC. personally i wouldnt have minded paying for DLC if dedi servers were still there, but now screw that. wasn’t this game designed on a computer?? not only did these A$$holes charge $60 for the PC version but decided to give us a PORT!!!
Sorry for the amount of anger in this, but they’re screwing people over and I would like all of my PC brothers that were planning on buying this game……..DON’T BUY THIS GAME FIGHT WITH YOUR WALLETS!!!!!!

My battle Cry goes out to developer’s who get lazy and just slap on the sequel. There are some pretty big games out there that are getting sequels and it ends up being the same crap. The PERFECT example of this is Spirit Tracks. I don’t see the “holy cows” behind it. IT’S THE SAME GAME WE GOT 2 YEARS AGO. Other games that seem to be the case are L4D2, Modern Warfare 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, among lots of others. You of course like them because of the franchise but you always end up saying “This is it? I paid 60$ for this?” Awesome manQuote

Hello EBA! What an awesome job (again, and again, and again:) Writing to you all the way from Ukraine, Eastern Europe. I hope you find my Battle Cry appropriate and interesting to discuss.
I want to tell you that gaming in our part of the world is a little different than Western European and US particular. It worked out that way for a while now that we love to play games on PC, especially our new generation (college students and high school kids) find it fun to mod and update their PCs and of course, play awesome graphics games on them. Unfortunately, we see less and less games coming out of US or Western Europe. The Gothic was genius but somehow project died down after 2nd part.
Anyways, it seems like we have less good games to play. Here are these companies that try to make games anf they are always good (nothing new): Blizzard, Valve, Activision, and EA(less and less). Are you serious? It used to be that I played all EA sports games (NBA) on my PC but after version 2006 it was gone…
To make it short… It’s frustrating.. for PC gamer see the degradation of RTS, RPG and FPS with much better graphics (and free online games) to the crapier quality games and less comfy controllers for FPS, on platforms.
I have to pick something good from this issue, so I pick the Battle Cry for Special Editions. How many PC games came out last few years and especially this year, BIG TITLES, for PC that have special or collector’s edition? No game… I go to the store and I see the same packages for PC games, all that’s different is titles. Hard stock paper, maybe some glossy shitty wrap… I go to the list of PS3 and Xbox Titles and I get: Modern Warfare2(Googles,Hardened Edition, Platinum Edition), Batman AS Collectors Edition(badass Badarang), GTA IV(Limited Edition), God of War 3 (diffrent types of Collector’s Edition). I mean COME on, do publishers have any less respect for PC gamers? Not only we have to play less good games but also have less of presentation and quality of stuff we ARE BUYING?
I mean, do we have to buy a Xbox version of MW2 to get Goggles? Or do we have buy GTA to get what we lack so much? We are spending way more money on keeping up with the gaming industry because we are KEEPING up with new technologies, we expect more and better games, but the quality and presentation keep going DOWN bcz of platfrom-oriented games..
This is my Battle Cry, fucking sad.. Orange WackoQuote

My battlecry is to the new generation of gamers who are more concerned about labeling new titles as clones or rip-offs than just enjoying the great content out there. Any new MMO that is released is supposedly a WoW-Clone, as if to say they invented elves or something. Blizzard took the best from all the MMO’s that were out there, and melded them in a way that has now become the gold standard for how an MMO should be. Now any company breaking into the genre or releasing a new product that does the same exact thing is labeled a clone.
Same with God of War. It’s just a hack’n’slash adventure game. Granted it is executed to near perfection, but that doesnt mean it invented the genre. Now games such as Darksiders and Dante’s Inferno that use somewhat similar combat mechanics are scrutinized and called rip-offs. Some even go as far to say that they will be terrible games, because they copy the game that they cherish so much…which makes no sense at all to me. Thats like saying they refuse to try a piece of this new delicious-looking cake because it looks too much like some cake they had last week that was incredible. I will happily eat that cake.
Very rarely will we see originality come through the pipeline these days, and even originality will be met with many familiar systems and methods. In this crazy world where every FPS is a clone of Wolfenstein, every RPG is a clone of D&D, and LittleBigPlanet is a blatant rip off of dolls made for little girls from grain sacks in the 1800’s (sure why not), many fantastic games are going to end up not getting the attention they deserve.
This battlecry is for gamers to stop the madness and quit punishing developers for trying to deliver their vision to the community, and in doing so, borrowing ideas from games that have been successful. It only helps the industry evolve as new takes on old systems continue to push the standards to new heights. In the end, gamers win through this process in my opinion.

My Battle Cry actually goes to Brutal Legend. I know you guys may not have played it through by the time the show aired this week about the EA deception but I bought it day one expecting an awesome experience and that’s exactly what I got (though I was aware beforehand that it had RTS elements).
Thank you Tim Schaffer. Thank you. I’d forgotten how righteously awesome heavy metal was and this game has given me a new appreciation for the genre. When I was done I had to break out my old Motorhead and Iron Maiden albums and rock out LaughingMan9Quote
Hey, you guys.
Please take your time and read this. It´s not a battlecry but something you should think about.
I think, you´re missing a very important point in the whole digital distribution pricing issue…
If you buy the disk you have one single copy, usable for one single person at a time. A downloaded game, on the other hand, is shareable by logging into your account on a different consle.
Both, Sony and Microsoft, are forbidding this but this it´s virtually impossible to stop it. They could make a game only downloadable once but this would piss off massive amounts off people, who want to upgrade their system (PS3 Slim, bigger XBOX HDD) or have to replace it.
And now, in the beginning age of digital distribution, the last thing they need are people, who complain about it and scare of new customers.
So, the equal prize of a downloaded game and a disk is nothing more then them compensating for a potential loss through sharing.
Keep up your great work.
Thanks for reading, doods.

In relation to the contents of this episode… the feel of the touch interface on the Apple handhelds is a mixed matter between personal preference and matching a good adaptation of a type of game with a good a good control scheme. It’s a platform that’s still growing up and finding its own way, things are getting better by the day, so it kinda feels wrong to hear it stamped with a “horrible interface” label as Tony does in the show.
Besides that, the general trend of hate towards iPhone games that goes on in various gaming info outlets does feel like it’s stemming from the fact that not everybody has one. I have a 3GS, and I have to say that in the beginning I had a very antagonistic relationship with tilt controls, swipe and touch controls and combinations thereof. But it grows on you if you let it, and I find myself enjoying games that are becoming better and more complex and refined all the time, despite a very stumped beginning. I find that I ‘create’ a tactile response in my mind when I play because my mind sort of expects a feedback and it simulates one where it’s not, and then the games I felt frustrated with before suddenly become entertaining.
If anything, it’s the _scheme_ that is implemented through tilt/touch that can stump a game. Gestures and tilts can be pretty effective but you need to design them properly, and in this respect there have been mistakes made by big names in the industry, most likely because they come from a more general mobile market and this is a very specific platform. Assassin’s Creed for iPhone suffers of poor controls and gets you killed more often than it should simply because you fall from ledges really easily due to poor design of the control scheme, to name just one big title.
My point is that that shouldn’t be damning of the whole platform in general. There will be a middle ground between the original properties that do make a smart use of the iPhone interface but are more often than not confined in the second tier citizenship of casual gaming and the clones of big names from consoles and PCs suffering from the inexperience of their developers in those segments. Getting the best of both will eventually bring original properties in fields such as FPS games, fighters, third personers and so on with a quality that, frankly, I haven’t seen in any of the game footage you’ve chosen to show (btw, why no NFSU, no Real Racing, no Terminator:Salvation, no Blades of Fury, no Dungeon Hunter, and so on? Why Rolando and Wolfenstein RPG, why only games that look like flash games or mobile games?).
On a different note, specifically the price of digitally distributed games, I must once again gripe on behalf of my fellow Europeans. But I’d like to better explain WHY there’s so much displeasure in this for us. You see, in the first few years of Steam, and in fact always until last year, we paid the US price plus import taxes. And that was BY FAR more convenient than retail price. Spending 30 to 40 euros for games priced between 50 and 60 euros at retail stores really made up for the lack of packaging, manuals and the option of special editions. Plus, no game boxes lying around consuming space. Bonus!
But then last year came the infamous local currency update, and the 1USD=1EU price conversion that most publishers decided to enact on Steam. Now after a few months, a number of them have lowered prices back to reasonable amounts, but not all and not for all games. So now we have this weird situation where you can buy your games in packaged form from online retailers that will cost you LESS than the digitally distributed version on Steam or other digital outlets. For example: Batman:AA for 32 euros instead of 50. Red Faction Guerrilla for 23 (nope, not 32, 23!) euros instead of 50. And so on (go check on Play.com if you will).
Now if it always had been the same price as retail, we probably wouldn’t care, but I rather think Steam and other such platforms simply wouldn’t have had any success here. The problem is, it WASN’T always like this, and once you take something away, especially this kind of value, your customers are gonna think less of you. I’ve bought many games through retail this past year that I would’ve gotten through Steam otherwise. Dead Space, Mirror’s Edge, Fear 2, Batman, Red Faction Guerrilla, and the list goes on. In fact, I’m only buying special offers on the platform these days. It’s the only time when they become convenient or at least close to the price I can find retail titles at, or to the prices they used to have.
This is not entirely, and probably not mainly Valve’s fault, or digital distributors’ in general. Prices are usually decided by publishers, such as the infamous 70USD price for Modern Warfare for us Europeans back when there was still USD prices on Steam. It would be interesting to reflect on whether publishers might have ulterior motives in making their franchises less appealing on digital distribution outlets than retail stores, especially if they also have their own online store.
It’s a shame, really, because digital distribution CAN work: the AppStore is the best example of that. ImmanoQuote
My battle cry this week goes out the App Store on the iPhone/iPod Touch for making portable gaming truly portable.
It’s so much easier and less time consuming to go to the App store and download a game any time you want than having to go all the way to GameStop/Walmart etc. to pick up a PSP or Nintendo DS game. This is obviously the reason why the iPhone/iPod Touch is getting credited the best portable gaming device and why Sony is making the PSP GO more like this.
Kudos to Apple for making such a great portable gaming platform, unintentionally! evil-chihuahuaQuote
Man, I’m sorry, I usually agree with the guys here, but you came off as fools on this podcast. With regards to Brutal Legends’ advertising, TONS of games have advertised their contents using misleading cutscenes for YEARS now. Hell, decades even – that’s how Square EA sold us all on Final Fantasy VII back in the day, and every blockbuster game since seemingly has sold based on the strength of their cutscenes.
How can a real gamer though possibly be thrown for a loop? When Game Informer broke the story announcing Brutal Legend, they talked about the unit types and squad based gameplay. That was over a year ago. How can you possibly have been looking forward to this game and not know how it plays? Worse still, you’re GAME JOURNALISTS! Hence, you all looked like fools there. I’m sorry, but that part of the podcast was painful to sit through. I don’t listen to Epic Battle Axe to hear idiots be stupid. That’s what 1up’s podcasts are for – I’m kidding;)
Still, you came off as fools this week, and that sucks. Gotta defend EA and Tim Schafer’s awesome game, especially when it’s done nothing wrong. If you’re gonna get pissed off a Brutal Legend’s marketing, than get PO’ed at Uncharted 2’s as well, considering most all the content shown in commercials is from the non-interactive parts of it. Or Kingdom Hearts. Or Gears of War. Or Halo………… VinceQuote
Obviously you missed the point, dude. They were not talking about people like you who go to the gameinformer and who follow all the way back to Final fantasy VII and keep track of all the marketing bullshit on different magazines or game sites… You obviously think most gamers are that hardcore or even have as much time as you to research games?
Thats what they were talking about (prove me wrong I be ya): if you are an average gamer and you decide to buy a game (Brutal Legend for e.), the only two big sources are the trailers from the game + info on their websites with official announcements, right? I am sorry, but Brutal Legend posted more trailers from the actual gameplay than from cutscenes and most of those trailers showed the guy smashing and playing God of War style, is it not so? Or what would you think when you see that in trailers? Does it mean you are dumb that you will think its an action game and not RTS? NO fucking way dude. And ASAP Brutal Legend guys mentioned very few times that this game is RTS and/or MOST of the game is RTS… EBA are not dumb, its you the idiot who thinks that every person who buys games looks beyond marketing stuff they put for public on sites like GameTrailers…
I believe you have no argument here. Orange WackoQuote
Digital games are costing as much as retail games because right now consumers are spreading rumors that digital games are going to be more expensive, which means that consumers would be grateful if the prices are the same. Publishers and digital retailers sees consumer expectation and maximize profit that way. This really isn’t the digital distributer’s fault, this is the rumor spreading’s fault. It makes no sense for both distribution games to be priced the same, but since consumer expectation is high, they are now the same price. In fact, there is an extremely loyal army of gamers who are adamant in their belief that digital games will cost more than retail games. Obviously, publishers will make them the same price, then, so they’d make more money that way AND they’d look like heroes to these idiots. RobertQuote
My Battle Cry goes out to $40 game releases.
You may have heard that recently WalMart, Best Buy, etc. have been releasing video games at $40 here in Canada (not sure if they are doing this in the US as well), first Batman: Arkham Asylum and recently Borderlands. Now I thought this was great and picked up Batman with no qualms, but when I went to get Borderlands I learned that it wasn’t the publisher doing this (ie to promote the game) but WalMart, etc. undercutting other game stores. So to stay ‘competitive’ the local game stores have to lose $20 on each purchase while WalMart tries to drive yet another industry into the ground, especially harsh when you consider digital distribution will probably do that in a couple of years anyway. Needless to say I won’t be buying anymore $40 video games, although I would love to keep the $20. It takes quite a bit for me to dislike WalMart anymore than I already do but there it is, and that’s my Battle Cry.

my battle cry goes out to the current gen console life span, i think 10 years is too long.when i found out that uncharted 2 uses 90 to 100% of the monster core processor of the ps3, not saying that uncharted 2 looks or preforms bad but in 5 more years the hardware will start to get old. game developers will have all this new and awesome software and hardware for example with the close release of direct x11 but cant use it because the console’s hardware is 6,7,8,9,10 years old which keeps the game industry from advancing and awesome games from being released technoboy64Quote

You know, I think Patcher has a point when he said on Bonus Round that o younger generation of gamers would start on iPhone and take that games in general are all like that, crap. We now have a generation that thinks that gaming is only going online and shoot other players. This is just great. From now on we won’t even have the game it self, just pay a service and go online, something like BattleForge. Oh, dear. TsubaruQuote
My epic battle cry goes out to PC gamers everywhere to stop fucking bitching about Infinity Ward. As a devoted PC gamer myself, I was very surprised and annoyed at the announcement of no dedicated servers for Modern Warfare 2. However, Robert Bowling did a great job explaining what the new system will entail, and it somewhat restored my faith, but why not have both dedicated and IW’s matchmaking system for the PC? Ofcourse Robert Bowlling say good things about their system, is his job. But:
-No dedicated servers is a step back.
-No mods.
-Rise the price since match with consoles.
-Discriminate PC community with Prestige Edition until last day.
I don’t want THIS in PC, ty.
I will play my original COD4 since Battlefield Bad Company 2. GargosQuote
my battle cry goes out to goes out to all the developers who are being strong handed by greedy publishers into doing things that are bad for us (the gamers) the publishers and the devs (Bioware’s DLC shenanigan as my example). we’re just as unhappy about this as you guys are sethesmainQuote
Okay, I still don’t get whats wrong with buying and activating games through Steam… Even if you don’t play online, you will need to activate a game, just like any other game, mostly online. Steam does that too. They not only sell and register users, they also activate the games you bought ( I guess so they people don’t play pirated versions). I know this one the only way for them to get rid of thousands pirated version for Counter Strike.
It sounds like you bough one of those smaller games, from Independent developers. Steam is just making sure you are not screwing that company and them when you pay your money, you get security check, and now you won’t be able to spread the illegal copy (if you decide some day to do so) >-< . I just think Steam is making a very smart system and it really DOES help independent developers get their games to a massive market. The CSS JunkieQuote
My battle cry goes out not to Activision (though that’d be too easy) but rather to EA, the lesser of the 2 evils, for their pre-ordering business involving Army of Two: 40th Day. Whether or not you get your pre-order bonuses from Gamestop, Best Buy etc or don’t even bother, at least you can play all the content the game offers but to effectively restrict a gamer content despite paying full price can set a dangerous precedent and prevent access to other content in future titles unless you pre-order, buy DLC etc IkilledthevideostarQuote
