Ready the spears and mount the horses, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! This week, we take a look at the debut trailer for Fallout: New Vegas, cross our fingers in hope that Splinter Cell: Conviction does indeed have a firm release date, say a brief ‘I told you so’ to the news that Episodes From Liberty City is headed to both the PS3 and PC in March, and bemoan the announcement that Microsoft will soon discontinue the original Xbox Live service.

First up in the main course this week, we talk about the recently unveiled Apple iPad. While Apple is certainly presenting their new mobile device as a superior outlet for games, will gamers buy into the new multi-touch platform? Next up, with BioShock 2 and Dante’s Inferno set to release this week, we discuss the literary influence on these two unique games. Will the source material of these titles inspire gamers to delve into the novels from which they sprang, or will everyone be too distracted by the kickassery?

The Battle Cry of the Week goes to Sonic the Hedgehog 4 and the hope it will be a return to form for the fleet-footed-franchise, Just Cause 2 and the hope that the actual gameplay lives up to the level of fun seen in the trailer, the recent BioShock 2 Special Edition Unboxing video and its tease for the forthcoming Über Edition, and Ninja Gaiden, one of the most epic, difficult, and influential titles on the NES.

Stay sharp.

    BOUT FREAKIN TIME TOO!!!

haven’t actually watch it yet, but i played GOW1&2, that got me (back) in to ancient greekery having read the Iliad a couple of years ago along with some other stuff. to cut a long story short, i got around to reading Dante’s Inferno as a direct result of reading Greek stuff (as a result of playing GOW) before the game was announced (Iliad, Aenid [written by Virgil and yes i know he's Roman not Greek] then Inferno).

basically, EA/Visceral’s Dante’s Inferno is a bastard child of greed, envy and despiration and should have been aborted in utero.
Read my Battle Cry re. SotC if you think i’m literary snob. what they’ve basically done is like when they turn a great game in to a film following a generic plot for commercial reasons and it’s shit, cept this time they’ve turned a great book in to a game yadda yadda yadda.  Quote

I think I got an idea that could help this problem we had about Dark Void. Maybe you should add a short segment about the games that came out the past week. You coud talk about the critic reception and your personnal feeling about the game. I’m not talking about scores and please NO NUMBERED REVIEWS… Just talk about it like you’re soooo good at! Like next week talk about Bioshock 2 and Dante’s Inferno! We didn’t get to play it, so what did you think!

Also about Stories of Liberty city, I think Rockstar really showed the industry that putting time and money on very good DLC, is not affordable. They now have to port it to PC and PS3 no make it rentable… It’s a real shame. That’s a buisness model you could examine as well in one of the shows…  Quote

Unfortunately, you’re an exception, not the norm.

The worst part about Dante’s Inferno is that EA has their heads so far up their arses that they went ahead and released a novelisation of the GAME. If that won’t screw around with the next generation’s perspective on that thought provoking piece of poetry, I don’t know what will.  Quote

My Epic Battle Cry goes out to System Shock 2. Bioshock would not have been the atmospheric game it was if irrational games hadn’t first cut it’s teeth with this game. While not a widely know game to the average gamer, System Shock 2 was a sci-fi action rpg that placed you on a derelict space ship overrun with an infection that turned the crew into quasi-zombie creatures. The game had an incredible sense of dread that was complimented by your enemies shouts for you to put them out of their misery. You also felt very alone as your only contact in the game was with an artificial intelligence named SHODAN. The game was light-years ahead of it’s time and i believe has influenced games ranging from Bioshock, to Dead Space, to even fallout 3.  Quote

My Battle Cry goes out to the Silent Hill franchise (from 1 to 4), no other game I have played has ever set an atmosphere so intense that it brought a hole new meaning to immersion.

The first one was mind boggling, it set in stone what true horror should be, not chainsawing your way through a sea of zombies, but being an average guy who so happens to be a father who lost his daughter and trying to get her back through a mysterious town that’s hell bent to scare the crap out of you.

Let’s be serious, we as gamers can never hope to become action heroes, games all too often give us luxuries such as regenerating health, ammo left and right, Silent Hill really pulls you back to reality in a good way, if you were alone in a creepy town with insane townsfolk, monsters popping out when you least expect it, hardly any ammo, you would run like there was no tomorrow.

Because the Silent Hill series never truly explained itself it only added to the scare, other games that pretentiously refer to themselves as horror like Resident Evil or Dead Space feel the need to tell you how the bad zombies are born. I find it more scary when I run around wondering WTF is going on then running around cursing the evil organization that thought that killing and turning their staff into zombies is a good business model.  Quote

To even talk about Dante’s Inferno as something else/more than a stupid, senseless, violent rip off from “La divina commedia” is an affront to literature. This has nothing to do with being an inspiration, because it has nothing to do with the book (except some names and places), which is regarded as the best and most influential work of italian literature ever and it is a piece of world literature like Goethe’s “Faust” in German or “Brothers Karamasow” in russian literature. This is just another step of the american society towards total stupidity. I can’t believe that even the smart people from this podcast are not totally criticising this stupid actiony video game, but I guess not even you never read something like this. (maybe Brent did)
As a german student of Anglistics and Italianistics I am ashamed of how the gaming industry is contributing to the general trend of being totally uneducated in the US of A by producing such pieces of shit that only look like a cake. Its so superficial which is again typical american I guess. And since you are all so focussed on console gaming not many of you ever played games like Planescape Torment, because this would only make you laugh at Dante’s Inferno… Maybe you should do that to know what a really good literary game is with a deep story and less eyecandy.  Quote

My Battle Cry goes out to games that give the player the opportunity to “read between the lines”. This week you guys were discussing two games that use great works of literature as their source material, but what strikes me as the major difference between Bioshock 2 and Dante’s Inferno is that Bioshock actually tries to translate the incredible storytelling of Ayn Rand’s novels into the medium of gaming, while Dante’s Inferno simply exploits The Divine Comedy for grotesque imagery and name recognition.

My Battle Cry goes out to games like Bioshock, Half-Life 2, Ico, and Demon’s Souls. Instead of relying on cutscenes filled with exposition and generally poorly written dialogue that serve to beat the player over the head with cliche themes and oft-insulting plot twists, these games and (few) others like them use the advantages of their own medium to push the story along by integrating the narrative into the setting, gameplay, and the character’s actions, in turn allowing those gamers who are able to read between the lines to savor the experience of feeling truly involved in a story, rather than simply being told a story. For instance, I found that helping the character of Ostrava in Demon’s Souls to be one of the most rich and rewarding experiences I have had in a game in a long time. I won’t spoil his story for people who haven’t played the game, but the thing is that it’s entirely possible to completely miss out on this element of the game unless you are paying attention to Ostrava’s actions and the way your own decisions aid or hinder him, and it is done with hardly any hand-holding exposition from the developers. Likewise, the setting of Bioshock is in and of itself a narrative, with practically every room telling a story, often interweaved with the audio logs or ghostly images that accompany them. A careless player could go through the entire game and miss out on nearly all of it due to how seamlessly it is molded into the gameplay experience. And in a game like Ico, the relationship that is formed between the boy and the girl is as strong as I have ever felt in a game, and it is solely a product of the gameplay.

These are all experiences which offer a rich storytelling experience and an emotional attachment that are completely unique to gaming, yet still stand out as oddities due to the fact that so many games still choose to tell their stories through movie-like cutscenes or large chunks of text.

I know that there are people who enjoy the long, movie-like cutscenes in games like FFXIII and MGS4, and I know there is an audience for the dialogue-heavy stories of games like Mass Effect. But personally I don’t think that these games really take advantage of what the medium really has to offer in terms of rich storytelling. Games are unique in how they allow the player to experience a story visually and through their own actions that are completely dependent of simply choosing a branch of dialogue or deciding “yes” or “no” at the proper time or even worse, simply watching scene after scene of the same old song and dance we’ve experienced for years. Here’s to hoping that the future of storytelling in games lies in allowing the player to experience the story how they choose, and giving them the opportunity to read between the lines.  Quote

My battle cry for the most atmospheric game and franchise of all time goes out to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. franchise.

Although the franchise will probably never be loved by everyone, with major flaws holding back the experience of every new iteration for many people, from Shadow of Chernobyl’s tedious quests to Clear Sky’s just about broken faction war system, what the franchise has become legendary for is heaps and heaps of atmosphere.

Although they may not be the most graphically impressive or polished experiences, the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games strive to keep you immersed at all times. They have always had a tendency to kick your ass in every possible way, but this only serves to highlight just how much of a speck you are in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. story and backstory.

Personally, I think I speak for everyone when I say that when I play a game, I want to believe the game. As interactive experiences, games have such great potential to craft worlds that suck us in, whether we be massively effected in a Sci-Fi universe or drowning in radioactive swamps somewhere in the hazardous Zone of a post-nuclear Chernobyl, and it is truely heartwarming that many games are striving to do the same. From the odd yet captivating city of Rapture to the quest for vengeance of a god-slayer in the shoes of the legendary Kratos, developers are making the transition from simply fun games to truely memorable experiences that absorb you completely, whatever the context.

Sure, we all love fun for the sake of fun, whether the experience be believable and immersive or not, but as gamers, perhaps we want more than that.

My Epic Battle Cry goes out to Medal of Honor (Playstation – 1992) NOT THE FRANCHISE. I wanna keep this short so here’s my main points:
1:genre – possibly the first 3d ww2 shooter? which made it so new and therfore immercive as it seemed so ‘realistic’.
2: graphics – best 3d graphics for its time? again making it ‘realistic’ and sucking the player into the world and situation.
3: audio – extensive gun sounds, german accents, great ambience sounds. everything to make it seem authentic and give a correct and contextual atmosphere. Soundtrack also showed great use of orchestral music (first use in videogames?)making it very tense and also giving it that epic ww2 victory feel.
4: gameplay – some apsects were completely new to me as a gamer but no matter what it was cool, getting to shoot people in the crotch and having animations for that made it emmersive aswell as actually being scared of enemies (heavy machine guns firing at you, dogs jumping at you) as a kid it nearly made me soil myself – especially when it’s not a horror / survival game which are deliberatley made to emmerce the gamer in horror.
There’s loads I missed out but I think it’s becuase this game was ahead of its time that made it seem so atmospheric and emmersive to me.  Quote

My Battle Cry goes to Dead Space !
This game had just the strongest atmosphere ever! By having thought about it many games came to my mind with a strong atmosphere or having you as a player immersed very deep into the game, such as the hole CoD franchise, especially the latest instalments or games like Mass Effect 2 that let you have such strong emotional relationships with characters from the game. But considering me being immersed into the game by the atmosphere alone already, I can’t point out any game more than Dead Space.
Graphics, but especially the audio was so intense that I could not play it for much longer than an hour or so without needing a break. The interfacewas perfectly merged into the game environment that you where never to much aware of it to let it pull you out of the game, ever more gave you the feeling that all these HUD things really belong to the world you are “visiting”.  Quote

My Battle Cry goes to the Metal Gear Franchise. I know there have alot of people bitching about Metal Gear being more of a hollywood movie then a videogame but isn’t that a reason why its one of the biggest franchises on the planet, reasons why i chose this franchise in particular:Immersive enviornments, with every game that is made, not only do you wanna feel like you are the characters themselves in this case snake, raiden or big boss but also feel like you are in the actual enviornments they’re and whats important about this with metal gear is that every entry in the franchise, metal gear 1=cardboard box, metal gear 2=hiding under objects or crawling in small spaces, metal gear solid=1st to utilize 3d enviornments and corner views, metal gear solid 2=interacting with objects like hanging over rails, locker but a big important one is the in game scores, this provides a sensational feeling of being immersed into the enviornments themselves, metal gear solid 3= the jungle enviornment giving the player a new enviornment to experiment in, metal gear solid 4=octcamo, being surrounded by war with emotion, intensity, pain, you know things that sort of brings the player into this kind of world and seeing it hands on themselves on how to survive and to combat this kind of this enviornment, basically i know i’ve missed a few games but basically every game adds something new to enhance the realism of each new enviornment , new ways to help player feel like yeah you’re only holding a controller and moving snake around but you are solid snake and with every situation and enviornment you’re in, you’re gunna use it to your advantage and thts what every game has, a sense of familiarity but at the same its different and there always something to help pul you into the enviornment, also go story and its link to modern day conflict and war help make the enviornmentfeel more real too and plus the games are just plain fucking awsome!!!  Quote

They are aiming to support a mod community on an incredible level and have tried innovative motivations like bundling their game with Overgrowth. Both companies even went so far as to give all the people who preordered before the promotion a copy of the other studios game.
I’m clearly a huge fan already but it seems to me that they are exceeding expectations we put on huge teams and millions of dollars. It’s great to see a company who cares so much about their fans and are putting everything they have into making an incredible title.  Quote

My Battlecry for most atmospheric games goes to fallout. The universe they created blew me away. I would lose myself in the world, blowing up raiders with my .223 pistol. This was one of the few times I felt like my character was me as a lone wanderer in a desolate wasteland.I believe the 2D graphics really helped. I would imagine what those horrible death animations looked like if I was there. I would imagine what some of those crazy feats I had accomplished in my head and be amazed at the scope of these games. Even Fallout 3 accomplished a great feat by making a surprisingly faithful adaptation of a Fallout styled hellscape.  Quote

My Epic Battle Cry goes out to the Legacy of Kain franchise. These weren’nt the biggest hitters of there day’s. But even though the games followed 2 main characters. The timeline always matched up perfectly, even better if you really wanted to puzzle out the timeline you could get headaches about the details they put into it to make it all fit together.

Something i really do appreciate speccially if you see how much detail they managed to put into the rest of the story, the characters and the world itself. The soul reaver side of the games even had multiple dimensions. A mechanic that really worked well with the puzzles and exploration in those games.

All in all these are one of the rare games that will always keep a little place in my heard.  Quote

My battle cry goes out to Vampire the Mascarade: Bloodlines. For all it’s floors this game was deeply atmospheric. The gloomy, gritty night setting with it’s run down menacing look was the perfect backdrop to play out the interweaving plot between rivaling clans clawing at each other for dominance. The characters were all rich and never felt out of place. Your choices made a persistant effect on the game world with chacters reacting to it and towards you. It just kept dragging you in.

This game just keeps getting better with age as the community updates keep on rolling out the atmosphere. Well worth another few play throughs in my book.  Quote

    Hi Guys!
    Great episode as always.
I got 2 subjects I would love to hear your thoughts on.

    Subject #1
You guys talk about Natal and Wii Motion+ quite a lot. I would love to hear you guy’s opinions on the PS3 Motion Controller. As we all know it’s release date is removed to Fall 2010, but other than that, we don’t know much about this controller…
Soooo.. What do you guys think about this Controller?
How would you like to play games with it?
Is it something for hardcore gamers?

    Subject #2
What sequel to any game series would you like to see most? Or; if there is a game you looked forward to but it never game out, what game was would that be?

We all want to know your opinions   Quote
