Knives at the ready and make for the shore, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In this week’s skirmish we take a look at the first (and free) DLC for MAG, Skate 3‘s May release date, the St. Lucia DLC for Dante’s Inferno, the Need for Speed World beta, and the Splinter Cell: Conviction demo that snuck out recently.
On the main course this week, we examine the recent debacle with Ubisoft and their DRM scheme which cut off thousands of players from single-player titles like Assassin’s Creed 2 on PC. We ask the tough questions; who is DRM hurting more pirates or players? How much money did Ubisoft spend to prevent paying customers from playing their games? Can we somehow blame Bobby Kotick?
The Battle Cry of the Week goes to the rumor of an Xbox 360 Slim, Arcade Aid, the latest viral ad for Tron: Legacy, Lead and Gold, and trailers that give away the whole game before it even hits the streets.

Best wishes from Sweden
LOL DK: Mac daddies xD
yay @ Tyrkisk peber! i guess it’s something that us Scandinavians have (myself beeing from Denmark) I have eaten many a Turkish peppers in my day, a totally awesome piece of candy!
Very good show this time guys, mad props! but i have to say to Tony and Brent, Stop bullying DK money schizz! he’s like a pun maestro and it’s so awesome!!
My battle axe goes to special editions of games. Publishers, don’t waste our money with fucking “making of” videos, put those in youtube where they belong.
The SSFIV “dojo edition” brings a 1GB USB stick with character art, wallpapers… a USB stick? 1 GB? How cutting edge! Put that art up in your website.
Now, soundtracks, artbooks, helmets, action figures are fine. So, please, publishers, if you want to sell us a special edition, make it special.
bleh turkisk peppar doesnt taste very good even if u are a swed, but the liquidy version of turkisk peppar makes good with vodka
lol at the swedish tyrkisk peber! wouldn’t say it’s the pride of sweden though..i’d say that that is opeth, meshuggah, dice and maybe entombed(since u love ‘em) xD and the guys who made bionic rearmed and lead and gold
I’ll just use this opportunity to sound my battle cry on the death of PC Gaming and it’s impact on the way we see and play games.
It’s old news that PC gaming has been going down the toilet for a long time now, wheter due to piracy or ease of development when it comes to making games for the consoles. I think, though, that this is worse than we would think.
Wheter you like it or not, PC games tend to be very distinct from the console ones. They’re usually a bit more convoluted, more complex, they behave different and tend to expect a bit more dedication from the player. Plus, PC gaming offers a level of freedom you just can’t get on the consoles, with mods, several configuration options or just the fact that you can mess around with it’s files.
By losing PC gaming, we’re losing variety on the gaming world. Look at the adventure genre, for example. It’s long past dead. Not even Schafer dared going back there. I also believe it kinda makes gamers a bit lazier, since all they ever have to temper with to get a game going is putting it in the console.
OnLive (if there is a God and he has lended his computer to host all that shit) won’t even make a difference, since the games will play just as they would on the consoles. Closed, restricted. There’ll be no mods or messing around with stuff.
And, in the end, head shots just feel better with a mouse.
Motherf-
turkish pepper is finnish!
Fazer fux yeah
Tyrkisk Peber is awesome!
Great show as allways guys!
Over and out from Denmark
Another excellent show, as always
I appreciate the work you guys do, you are the only ones that give voice to the community and promote good discussions about gaming
keep up the great work…greetings from Portugal
Great show as usual! The 360 Slim is real in my view and it’s coming bundled with Natal. This I think will be the alternative to lowering the current RRP.
- My Battlecry is about the PC DRM issue -
I thought it was really good that you highlighted the AWFUL DRM Ubisoft are currently implementing.
I can understand having certain anti-piracy measures, I mean CD checks are a given but requiring a constant online connection is going WAY too far.
Steam offers a good balance in my view, why can’t more PC games leverage Steam activation? No system will ever be perfect, hackers will always find a way, so Publishers please just give the people who actually do buy your games a nice experience and they will thank you for it by shopping with you again next time. Ubisoft are totally alienating their core fanbase, perhaps they need an Axe to the head.
I’d also just like to point Axewielders of the PC ilk to http://www.tweakguides.com – Koroush has some really good articles about DRM and Asscreed 2 in particular… so do check them out if you’ve had any issues personally or just want to read some more about the DRM debate.
Until next time…
Amazing as always guys. Keep it up!
BTW, God of War III is absolutely ridiculous! (in a good way of course.)
Awesome show as always guys! My Battle Cry goes to the God of War trilogy. Having just finished GOW3, I was blown away by the game. In my opinon, each GOW was better than the one that preceded it, which is a feat in its self, and one which hasn’t happened too much in gaming, if at all. I can’t wait to play through the game again. The last time I was this excited to replay through a game this much was RE4. Honestly, when was the last time a game compelled you to replay it immediatly after playing it? And is there another game series that has consistantly gotten better with each installment, and not been just a rehash of what worked the first time?
@DK: I’m kind of sad of your comment on the sniper class on that Far Wast third person game I forgot the name… It’s kind of already difficult for women to feel good in the games industry and I’m sure those who listen to the podcast won’t laugh about it.
I have a strong opinion about women’s place in society and mostly in games where they are always depicted as perfect creatures and to have their place, they have to be sexy. Why can a man caracter be fat, ugly and dirty, but the girl, which is already depicted in a very manly vision (with big breast and perfect body), HAS to be even sexier and show some skin.
I’m sure you said it without thinking too much, but I’m sure your opinion has an influence on (some) people’s thinking. Just think about the last time you saw a fat protagonist in a game… (except Fat Princess fat princesses…)
I can’t believe people are smashing votes into God of War. It’s only got 4 games! Some of those other franchises have been delivering to fans for 20-25 years without ever dropping the ball on a major title.
There isn’t a single GoW game that has a better Metacritic/GameRanking than Halo:ODST, Zelda: Ocarina of Time or Mario Galaxy.
What a joke…
Great episode by the way.
I meant Halo: Combat Evolved **
DK has the same Birthday as me!!!
Funnily enough we share the same birthday as Salvador Dali!!!!!
When u boys gonna release a EBA t-shirt? EBA on the front with the symbol with ‘Cry havoc and let your voice be heard’, on the back, ‘At the end of the day, Our fans could kick your fans ass’
(The game was Lead and Gold, 13 bucks on Steam at the moment) Come on chick dude, women in video games look sexy, men in video games have to look like He man, you wanna change that get more female dev’s and girls to buy games.I don’t walk into fashion shows shaking my head and saying ‘this needs a mans touch’, don’t you try take the 6.5 million cleavage/panty shots out of our metal gear solids.
P.S Don’t take this too seriously, I kinda agree with you. Plus I don’t wanna upset a fellow Axe Head. Especially one that prolly has boobs.
Great episode, as always. I love Epic Battle Cry. It never fails to put an entertaining listen out there and it has been giving me ideas for my own podcast as well. http://www.digital-delirium.com if you want to check it out. Yay for shameless self promotion, even if I was being honest about this podcast giving me ideas and not actually intending to promote.
Anyway, this thing with Ubisoft’s DRM is just bullshit. There is no excuse. It should not include include single player games. There is no reason for it, and all it is going to do is piss people off. It is certainly accomplishing that right now. If that is your goal Ubisoft, good job. You accomplished the shit out of that. If you buy the freaking game, you should be able to play the single player, even if you are playing it at some hotel on a business trip when you have no internet. That is all there is to it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrkisk_Peber
Its Finnish
and its good
who cares all halo zela mario games are better then button mashing gow
Uh Brent i stayed to listen to the whole podcast i im deeply trouble that you find so little changes in Halo 3. so can i ask you whats changed in gow esides visuals?
Awesome show as always guys!
My battlecry:
I just had some thought regarding the Ubisoft DRM:
Why is it that a lot of gaming journalists claim that the Ubisoft DRM was cracked within a day or two? It’s still not cracked. If you visit the biggest pirate torrent site in the world (the pirate bay) there is not one single working AC2 download with a functional crack. The big groups such as Razor 1911, skidrow and reloaded have all been trying to go at the DRM without result. Why do i believe this? Simple, this is the first use of Ubisofts DRM (Silent hunter V and AC2) and whichever group manages to crack the DRM for the first time gains a lot of cred within the hacking community. If either of these groups would manage to crack the game they would INSTANTLY make it known by posting it on the pirate bay. Now, there is a crack that allows players to bypass the initial authenticity check and startup the game. However, as soon as the player tries to go into the animus the game freezes. This means that pirates gets to play for no more than a couple of minutes.
That is the state of the DRM at the moment. And Yes, the fact that the Ubi severs went down is NOT ok, DDOS attack or not. But, to claim that pirates get a better experience than retail costumers is not a correct statement. In a whole i’d say my AC2 playing experience (purchased on PC) has been almost without fault. I had about 2-3 hours downtime one Sunday but aside from that it’s been smooth sailing. And regarding the disconnections, when the game notices that you’ve lost connection it takes 30 seconds before it cuts your gaming. Not a “split second” as mentioned in the podcast. At this time, the game makes a auto-save at the exact position the player was when connection was lost, so that when the connection is restored the game will resume exactly where you left off. Without any loss of any progression. (This was implemented after release by Ubisoft through a patch)
I will finish my little rant with WHY there is such a thing like the UBI DRM. Single Player PC titles today can see up to 92% piracy on their products. People just don’t buy single player pc games anymore. If this DRM does not succeed, i don’t think we will see a lot more PC single player games in the future. If you feel outraged and want to play the blame game, blame the pirate next to you..He/she is the reason this DRM exists.
Regards
Khoplin
Ubi’s copy protection is NOT cracked. That crack, that claimed to be doing so, is not working. Using warez scene terms: it’s nuked. So, in a way, Ubi’s DRM works just like it should. It prevents playing the game if you don’t buy it legally.
(edit: just like the guy above already said… sorry
)
Looks like you’re the only german fan Krautkleid
Yeah EBA & the EBC crew always deliver it…the podcast & everything about the site just awesome, always makes me laugh. can’t wait for the next show & i really like the ON TAP as well, hoply there’ll be more of this section in the future.
CRY HAVOC!
Greetz,
M
My battlecry goes to Paid DLC, especially in racing games like Forza 3 and Test Drive Unlimited. My recent experience with Forza 3 is a great example. The game was released less than an year ago, and there’s more than 2400 points of available DLC already (for those that didn’t purchased the collector’s edition). Having DLC with new cars is great, but pricing it this way is just a rip-off. If they’re competing with GT5 for in-game content, they should give the DLC away, not selling it. And just like it happened with Forza 2, when the “Classics” version is released, the second DVD will have all of that DLC included, and for a much lower price.
There is no reason for Ubisofts DRM?…Really? Let me break it down for you. A game costs A LOT of money to develop, we are talking 30-50 million dollars. The publishers must make money from their products, or else they have to close down studios (Which is happening all over at the moment). Because of the amount of people choosing to download illegal copies of single player PC games, the developer decides to stop this through the use of DRM’s so that their product makes some money.
NOW, all offline/semi-online DRM’s has been cracked within days. Therefore they have a DRM which forces you to be online at all time while playing. This DRM is still uncracked, and is working. Until a “offline solution” to the piracy problem presents itself, i support Ubisoft in ALL anti-piracy attempts. If you are upset about the DRM that exist today, blame your neighbor who is most probably a pirate.
Cheers
SOLID skirmish!!!
The EBA team delivered as usual, keep it up guys
greetings from Poland (BTW you have quite a few dedicated and faithful fans here)
I think it’s a good idea to space out games more. Valkyria Chronicles for PS3 came out on November 4th? It might have done better if it wasn’t lost in the holiday season and the sequel might not have been made on the PSP.
Great to finally hear you guys about the Ubi-nonsense. I have been waiting for that, and it’s good to see we mostly agreed.
I don’t mind anyone taking a swing (axe or not) at piracy because I believe it is a bad thing. But to fight it with something that is at least as bad does not make sense. Are they really that desperate? Ubi’s non-response to 95 (by now) pages could be a sign of that. However, a couple of gaming years have educated me not to believe game developers on their word.
Also, if PC-gaming is as small a portion of their profit as publishers claim it to be, why spend any money on the anti-piracy stuff at all? Even if we’re talking about half of PC-gamers as pirates (which I consider highly improbable) then we’re talking half the people out of a very small group of people. Besides, if the group is really that small, how do they expect to make money out of it in the first place? (add a lower retailprice in general to the mix) It must be ridiculously cheap to program for PC, or they are plainly using a special skill that could be described as follows: lying. And I don’t like lying people.
I will not be buying AC2 or SCC until Ubi removes the DRM they have in place now. That’s 2 games I sadly won’t be spending my money on… too bad because I believe both to be great games. Well, Just Cause 2 will have to do. At least there are still companies like Eidos and Bioware that know that the only way to increase sales on PC Games is to increase the value of the game, AKA the overall quality of them.
If PC-gaming dies, it’s companies like Ubisoft that killed it. Making money is part of the industry and completely acceptable. Alienating a paying customer is not.
Not to advocate piracy or the apparent DDos, but I can understand if PC-gamers take a swing back at them… If I say ‘you are dead’ to someone it could be perceived as a death-threat. If someone is trying to kill you have a right called ‘self-defense’, look it up Ubi-lawyers
If PC gaming dies, it’s because of pirates not making it profitable to release PC games.
Actually,make that 2
Quality skirmish! My battle cry goes to japanese development of games. I recently played through final 13 and although it was not the best the level of detail in the environments was second to none. Also games like bayonetta, where western games have you perform a punch punch kick combo bayonetta would have you in awe of even the simplest moves. Why dont western games contain the sheer amount of dedication to beauty, or art in many cases.
Severed
My battlecry is going for to game controll…
Or lack of it, now im a old N64 player and most may not rember Turok dinosaur hunter control settup, now then the years when PS2 arived i seen a decline in fully adjustable control and allso a switch of the action from both sticks to have opposite actions, form being growing upp to handle aming for left thumb or other things requier accuracy to now all of the sudden right thumb, was this their idea of refer to you use right hand for mouse?
This wont healp with being spammed by other saying “learn to play video games the correct way” how juvenile to spit something like that out to ppl that has problem with something.
And this problem has led to manny games i couldint play, Uncharted 2, Bioshock and Mass Effect untill now layter when i had to pay extra for a custom built controller.
Piracy never made me pass on one sale… Ubi’s Defective Ridiculous Monstrosity allready made me pass on 2.
You are referring to southpaw and legacy controller setup. They are still available on some shooters. However, there was a point in time when you did not know how to use the N64 controller right? Everything has a learning-curve, and I think you would do yourself a big favor in spending some time getting used to the new industry standard for controllers.
But who knows, what we are used to now might be changed tomorrow..so it’s just a matter of keeping up with the current trend
Cheers
My battlecry goes to Yoichi Wada, CEO of Square Enix who very recently reopened the “Final Fantasy VII PS3 Remake” case, saying he and the rest of the crew at Square are going to discuss the possibility of going into development of the epic game.
I think if they finally took the decision to proceed with remaking, now it would be a good time to do so cause ffxiii is selling well and the ps3 needs to see a tremendous boost in unit sales and this game would definitely lend a hand to Sony, so announcing it anytime soon and presenting us a teaser or luckily a trailer in this year’s e3 would be brutally awesome!!!!!!!!!
Great show like always
And yeah Turkish Pepper (Turkinpippuri) is more finnish product
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyrkisk_Peber
And you definitely need to mix it with vodka for http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salmiakkikoskenkorva
mix bottle of vodka with several pieces of candy and you get SALMARI
The strong flavor almost completely masks the presence of alcohol =D
Daniel…. pleas stop preparing your puns beforehand. It really sounded better when you spontaneously thought them up.
And for my Battlecry,
I really think that publishers should make PC games cheaper. Really how much money do PC gamers spend on a good gaming rig. And keep putting more money in it for updates. After doing all this you need to buy the game for 60 bucks (well, euros where im from). And usually most of the todays games were made fore consoles and simply get ported in 3 to 6 months to the pc, and still they ask full price.
Thats why i think PC games get pirated. if they cost like 30 bucks, it would be much more attractive to buy a full product. In stead of downloading the pirated game and playing the single player only ( or multiplayer also, but having to crack a whole bunch of stuff).
hey guys, well i think most of the gamers arent really happy about onlive and after watching how some problem that gamers have suffer this last few month i think onlive bad.
for example, the fat ps3 clock problem, psn and xbxlive have had some issues and long maintenance like the 5 days maintenance that psn had when mw2 came out, ubisoft drm problem and you can add your own internet company problems.
when i buy a game that has sp i expect to be able to play it without internet and if i buy a game with mp i expect a good service but i can understand that if my internet is not working well or the server are having problem i want be able to play it for a while.
the problem with onlive is that you have to pay every month and you need to buy games but if the internet is not working well, the servers are saturated or you didnt pay that month all the games that you bought are worthless.
what happen with the people around the world like me ( im from chile), we dont have real psn or xbox live support but we can still use it using a NA account, we can buy sony psn money and xbox live point and live card but we dont get real support and onlive will be a bigger problem to us.
if you check sales if truth that NA is the biggest market but more than half of software and hardware sales arent in USA, you can just compare vga to npd charts for example, even when vga chartz arent really counting all the sales around the world…
i love to play online, i use a lot my psn and xbox live accounts and i use to play wow for 4 years, but i also love to be able to chill out without been force to be in the internet.
3 week ago in Chile we had a huge earthquake and the internet was working in the 50% of there capacity and i couldnt play any games in internet but i could play my new copy of mass effect 2 ( the old one was destroyed in the earthquake by my tv) and heavy rain on my ps3 and xbox….
i love to have both offline and live games but i also love to have the chance to decide what i want and own my own disc.
Great show guys!
I had to comment on this…it’s neutrally pro, love it. True, we ain’t aimin to solve the mysteries of life or cure cancer. We also know that the depiction of women in games is utterly ridiculous. and you are right, so are the dudes…but that’s the way it is. We all have enough to worry about in the world, humor us if we don’t indulge a little fantasism (word?) now and again
.. also, why in the world are you listening to DK? WTH! Have an impact on people’s thinking? whoa…That’s the real tragedy…..
PEACE
EBAAXEMAN
Hey, thx for the feedback. I’m certainly not in the business of demeaning women, but was rather attempting to convince the devs of Lead and Gold to “spice up” the female sniper character. Obviously, I don’t think EVERY female character in EVERY game MUST be sexually appealing (which is subjective BTW), but in a game with only one playable female character, I would think that the art design would have gone in a different direction based on my exposure to interactive entertainment and experience with games over the past 20+ years. Again, it’s not BAD if they choose to leave the character as is, its just not what I would choose considering the scenario. Anyway, the role of women in gaming (both as characters and within development/marketing/biz) is changing all of the time and yet another important topic that we will eventually bring up here on the ‘Axe. All feedback will of course be welcomed. Thx again for yours regarding the comment from this week’s skirmish and thx for checking out the show.
Awesome episode and yes I did listen to the very end that last part about Halo comming out had me laughing my ass off. My battlecry this week is why do developers seem to always ignore what the consumers want. In particular I’m talking about Rare studios. I understand that Nintendo is prventing Golden eye from comming out. But what about Banjo Thereie? They would make so much money making a proper sequel to banjo Kazooie 2 with HD graphics I just can’t fathom why they wouldn’t release it. I’m dying for a solid AAA platformer and Mario just doesn’t cut it for me. Are developers really that scared to release something other then a TPS or FPS? And btw I was one of the few who actually liked BK: N&B I made some cool shit in that game. Good show guys!
Hehe, But turkisk peppar is liqurice and not very popular anyware except in sweden
ryekiah peber is my fav candy mo fucka
Is it part of your agreement for DK to say “SWEEET ASS GOG ACTION” every time? It’s actually worse then the puns.
Hey guys, PocketStation over here…
As feedback on the ‘Lick Colored Balls’ podcast, I post this comment beneath that show as well as this one if you don’t mind, coz maybe not too many people are reading older posts.
Anyways I just want to state that I don’t think you guys need to fear those motion sensing game interfaces too much. I know some folks are a bit scared that real (hardcore) games will get less attention from platform holders like Microsoft and Sony.
However I think we don’t need to worry at all. Let me explain this a bit, cause there are two reasons to substantiate this statement.
1. A company like Microsoft’s main goal isn’t to bring games to us. For MS that’s a means to an end, in order to dominate the central multi-media network hub in every household. Probably MS is using Natal mainly to facilitate this goal, not so much to make ‘awesome’, ahum… games.
2. Companies like MS and Sony apply a ‘Gillette’ revenue model (selling the console below production costs and earn money on all the games sold. Now remember they also earn money from license fees on third-party games from the likes of Activision and EA). Those companies know that ‘casual’ gamers who like to play Wii Fit, Just Dance and Farmville don’t buy more than perhaps 1 or 2 games per year. With such a low attach rate they would never be able to make money on all the incurred R&D investments. However, what they want to do is let household decision makers, such as moms, dads and anyone else with an income choose their console as the main entertainment machine and internet hub (and trust me when slate computing like the iPad and motion stuff like Natal become really big – Bill Gates even stated he wants to apply it to PCs – then you’ll see websites accommodating this by adjusting their layout to facilitate easy ‘touch/motion’ interfaces, instead of a precise mouse pointer interface). And these mom’s and dad’s have kids that rather sooner than later get bored from all that casual garbage… and then they’ll start begging for Ratchet and Clank, Mass Effect 3, God of War 4 or Halo 6(?). And for Sony, they also hope to increase the Blu-ray compatible installed hardware base, because they also earn licensing fees on every Blu-Ray movie that’s being sold. And that’s how they probably expect to crank up their attach rates, and print out more Benjamins.
So in the end we ‘real’ gamers don’t need to worry about all that motion tech stuff that’s standing around the corner too much.
Feedback and alternative perspectives are always welcome!
Cheers,
PocketStation

a question for Daniel:
Has anyone really been far even as decided to use even go want to do look more like
My battle cry goes out to Activision.
As we all know COD4MW2 Stimulus Map Pack is coming out at March 30. im not a huge die hard fan of call of duty series. but as a gamer for so many years, 5 maps costing 15$ with 2 remake map from MW1 is totally a rip off. COD4MW2 is already the most successful game from business point of view. Since the company had generated so much profit from the game. Stop ripping off the customers who love the series from DLC. At least give out a reasonable price for those 5 maps.
My Epic Battle Cry goes out to Ubisoft and their DRM system.
When Microsoft shuts down Xbox Live next month, gamers on the Original Xbox are still able to play Halo 2′s Offline multiplayer and Single Player story.
However when Ubisoft decide to pull the plug (more likely from the recent cock-up) on their DRM service, people who have bought Assassin’s Creed 2 on PC may not be able to play the game even by the end of the decade.
Go Parramatta Eels!!!!
hey guys
My EBC goes out to (games like) God of war 3, earlier this year i brought dantes inferno and iv never played a GOW 1 or 2 and i knew DI had used some ideas from GOW series but now having played GOW3 i can see they riped nearly the whole game off , and now i kinda feel like viseral n ea just made the game to make money off me. i understand that alot of game companys need to profit from they games but i just wonder how much effort goes into these type of games, im a huge fan of the dead space series which again stole alot of ideas from the resident evil games and alien movies but i thought they had improved n made it there own.
but when i play god of war 3 i feel like the developers made this game for me and when i play dantes inferno i feel like it was made for my wallet.
I would like to know how much effort goes into games today and weather they care more about the gamers enjoyment of the game or if they care more about how much money the game makes.
There actually is a full fledged racing mmo called Drift City, it was made in Korea and is actually pretty fun and free.

My EpicBattleCry goes out to the thoughts of the Axe Overlords
There was a bit on Game Trailers a while back. Talking about how developers, producers , and pretty much every one on the project wasn’t getting their money’s worth.Cost of games were talked about going up and how they are distributed to the public gamer’s. Pay 2 Play was discussed and looked like a good alternative.play for free until you feel you feel you want to go further in the game and pay while you play for the time you play.
Do you feel that OnLive could be the answer for this. Yes the cost of games may go down. There is still a monthly fee + a low price of games could set it in the right path. What do you think

I love splinter cell and i own a ps3 and i know it may come out for ps3 in the future but by then there will be bigger and better things out in the shops.
