So, as a post on the Official PlayStation Blog points out, Sony’s PlayStation Portable turns five years old today and while we’re certainly not gonna try to rain on the parade, we here at the ‘Axe thought it was a relevant time to seeks some feedback from the EBA Community in regards to the PSP’s overall success and immediate future. Now, I personally own a PSP and rather enjoy it while traveling around, but I think there are plenty of gamers who might have expected more out of the system over the past five years and even more gamers who have hopes for what it CAN DO over the next 60 months.
With that said, I’m going to invite the Axe Head Army to read the rather triumphantly toned post on the PlayStation Blog and then use the comments section below this post to share your thoughts on what the PSP has accomplished thus far, what you hope it will attain, or whether or not you even give a crap about the PSP to begin with.
Have enough AAA titles been released to justify a purchase of the system? Are PSP games DIFFERENT enough from their PS3 brethren to generate interest? Does the hardware itself deliver a good experience or would you like to see something different? What about the PSP Go? Has it hurt the PSP brand overall or made things better?
Obviously, there are A LOT of questions regarding Sony’s PSP, so thanks in advance for your participation on the matter…We’re looking forward to your feedback and hopefully we as a community can deliver some good input to Sony regarding our take on the PlayStation Portable’s past, present, and future.

Unfortunately, pirating has really dampened the growth of this platform. One company that comes to mind sharing this view is Pixel Junk.
Even so there are still lots of great titles and functionality that has made me glad to own one.
PSP GO on the other hand should’ve entered the market at a loower price point. Way to overpriced.
Looking forward to the PSP 4000 soon.
My opinion of the PSP was a lot better before the PSP Go came out. I honestly think the PSP Go is a great idea, No one wants to carry around UMDs. But it came at the worst possible time.
They should have saved the idea of a digital distribution focused handheld for when they were ready to bring out a new generation of hardware.
Sony should have known better then to ask existing PSP users to abandon their game collections for a new model of the PSP.
Other then the Go, my experiences with the PSP Have been pretty positive. I think I’ve spent more time with the PSP then the DS. I find myself drawn to it less and less these days though.
Oh the PSP everyone thought it was gonna be great and it is in a lot of ways but the damn system has no games! All the good games on the psp are sports titles or ports of console games. Compared to the ds’s lineup of good games the PSP’s is laughable. Shame though the thing had so much potential ,awesome graphics too
To be honest, I’ve never really liked the PSP. There are only a few titles that I’d really enjoy playing on the PSP, and most of those have already been ported over to the DS, some with additional content. Sure, there’s titles like Chains of Olympus, but that’s not enough for me to spend more money on a system that has fewer games for me to play. And the PSP has also suffered with what I consider a serious design flaw: Analog stick placement. What’s the point of putting it right below the d-pad? Sony could dominate Nintendo in handheld shooters if it just moved the damned analog stick to the right side of the system! The fact that there have been 4 iterations of the PSP so far and NONE of them have even attempted to address this fact is criminal. Or criminally stupid, either one.
As for the PSP Go, that was a complete debacle and an utter failure. Smaller screen, download only, and 100 bucks more expensive than it’s larger counterpart. Of course, the biggest problem was that if you had already owned a PSP and had games that went with it, you would have to buy them all over again.
All in all, the PSP is a system that could have achieved greatness, but poor design and poor marketing brought it down.
Using it everyday for PSX games.. Classic RPG’s on the move is great… And a price point at 6-9 dollars is totally worth it.
Im not playing any PSP titles though… Not egnough RPG’s…..
Not enough RPGs? I’d go online, look at a catalogue list of PSP games, and reevaluate that statement. They may not be big name RPGs, but RPGs, nonetheless.
My experience with the PSP has been generally positive, but could be better (damn single analog stick…).
I bought the PSP primarily for the Metal Gear games, and it hasn’t let me down on that front (Peace Walker!). Not to mention the remakes of classic games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Valkyrie Profile.
I also love that it doubles as a mobile platform for my classic PSX games. I never thought I’d ever play FFVII on a train.
Unfortunately, if you’re a gamer who doesn’t care about the above points, then the PSP is pretty worthless. The DS’s exclusive lineup absolutely smashes the PSP’s. Hell, it’s better than the Wii.
I love my PSP… well i did *tear rolls down eye*
I had my PSP stolen from me not too long ago, along with my 2gig memory stick and my favorite Game for it (Monster Hunter Freedom Unite).
I dont see why people complain about the PSP. I was able to have a lot of fun playing it, and I never even had a chance to download FF7&8 or MGS1.
only complaint I had was that it needed to be connected to a PS3 which I dont have (yet) in order to play online.
Im currently trying to find a silver PSP to replace my old one… Silver is hard to find D:
Just corporate spin, but I like my psp. The only problem is software support, it doesn’t seem like devs are willing to take the time to polish their games for the system. The go could have been a great asset to Sony, but it was poorly executed.
I dont own a psp, i wanted to buy it but after i heard the recent rumours about sony planning to make a device capable ofplaying psp games and a phone in one, i think ill wait till E3.
My impressions? Mostly bad games, due to the lack of second analog, which is a shame cause metal gear portable ops or any other fps or third person shooter could have been a blast. I want to buy it because of the fact it can play movies on the go and it can play ps1 games. Psp Go? Total failure. If i had the choice of buying a psp 3000 or psp go!, ill go with psp 3000. I like to have some games like chains of olympus or peace walker in my hands rather than digitaly.
I bought a PSP when it was new. Honestly I grew out of it. Not that handheld gaming is for kids, but PSP games are generally like mini console games. And that’s not the experience I want on the go. I now prefer smaller games that I can play for 5-10 minutes over and over again. Games that the DS has like Elite Beat Agents. Granted that system doesn’t have very many large games to balance out the library. If I’m in a plane for hours, I would like to go through a game like Chains of Olympus or Daxter. Not play 15 minutes of DS, and be bored for the remaining 4-5 hours.
Nintendo did the right thing by innovating with a touch screen, resulting in those short games. But they need to invest more in games that actually rival the console quality on PSP.
Well First off I love my PSP, me and the lil’ homie have been through a lot, be it the long car rides, being on a plane, or being trapped and surrounded by old people.
NOW, here’s the Achilles heel of the PSP, it’s not the lack of AAA titles specifically , But the lack of AAA Titles that are synonymous with the PSP brand.
You see, from an average gamers perspective the PSP is nothing more than a PS2 lite, with the same exact titles that the PS3 gets just smaller, shorter in length, and with 1/100th of the graphical prowess. There has yet to be a game come out for Playstation Portable that has made you go “Holy F*%&, I gotta have that s&(#”.
With that, now couple in a present but truly non-existent third Party line-up with some of the most fumbling hands in the form of the handling of the PSP in marketing and large scale first party support, and a SEVERE design flaw in not having a 2nd analog stick(really Sony, Really???) and you have a MASSIVE lack of fulfillment in what seemed to be great amounts of potential.
For me the PSP never really appealed to me, sure you can do stuff the DS can’t but I feel the more variety of games for the DS was better. Furthermore I thought the hole movies on the go is pointless, if your on a long trip I dont want to be laughing or jumping out of my seats at a movie, also I think the smaller the screen for movies the worser the experience, we can see alot of people having the same idea due to all the UMD’s in bargin bins.
Having music was a nice feature but at the end of the day it needed another analogue stick, also unlike the DS it didnt seem very innovative, it just bunched aload of stuff we already had an put it into a PSP.
I should have got a DS. It’s become so much of a paperweight for me with the lack of games. I’m not kidding when I say that I have to reset the clock/calendar every time I decide to turn it on. It’s also disappointing that they seem proud even though the PSPGo was a universal disaster. With it’s outrageous digital prices and minimal support.
