To continue the topic of discussion in the Recent AxeFactor (060) What do you think about the used games industry? Are used games a hindrance to sales? Will the end of used games be a positive for the industry?
I have always held the belief that used games are an important part of the gaming industry. I myself used to thrive of selling games. It was only a few years ago when I used to rely only on trade credit to buy my games and frequently bought used to save myself a little bit of my paltry trade credit. I think many more kids these days still use the trade in system to afford to play current titles.
In addition, used games can be an introduction to a franchise. One of my favorite franchises of the current generation is Gears of War. I would have never known that if my friend had not lent me his copy to play. Now I own all 3 games including the limited editions of both 2 and 3. Without that initial spark I might have avoided the series altogether.
I'd love to hear what everyone else has to say about used games, pro or con.

OfflineUhh…i dont know… i dont buy alot of games…and play mostly F2P titles…if i buy something its usualy from a Steam sale…exept for a few big titles…
Btw ask yourselfs are second hand games the only thing out there… cus i can tell you that me and some buddies of mine share our games with one another…wich means let me see …5 copies of the game that didnt get sold
wich is sad…but games cost alot for my country…the minimal wage is around 100 euros…and the average is close to 300…and game prices are still the same….soo…![]()
Yeah but how many of those 5 friends would buy the game in question brand new if they couldn't borrow it due to console built DRM. I know there are tons of games I never would have played without renting/borrowing them, and with a no used games policy it would destroy both those things in the process.

Offlinei dont think they can make this work on the PC scene… but if we were playing on a console…well simply share the rig
i can already see renting whole systems
ahahah and im sure that im not the onlyone that thought of it
theyll replace the old monster with a newone.. this may actualy lead to less ppl buying consoles
ohoho this is going to be so much fun ![]()
I really don't buy or sell used games that much…
I game a lot on PC, so that throws out the used game option right there… For PS3 games i never really buy used games, since GameStop here barely lowers the price for the used games, it's not worth it – in some cases it's actually more expensive than buying new elsewhere (mostly older games in this case)…
I have sold a few, but that was because i had a period where i bought ALOT of PS3 games new and on pre-order – only to find out they were not very good.
I have gotten more cautious on that front, and thoroughly research a game before i pre-order now – so I don't expect to sell alot of games anymore.
I'm not against used game sales at all, but i can definately see game devs/publishers point of view on this – and if they choose to take steps to discourage or entirely eliminate the ability to play a game used, be it with a console that simply can't play them, or some other way, i will surely accept it… maybe even voice my support.
It's a business, and i would much rather have an online pass or a X720 that can't play used games at all, than i would have devs go out of business or decide to close up shop.
Also – i'm a student, living in an apartment that is a little more expensive that i would like, and definately don't have alot of money – but I try and find ways to get the games i want, and I haven't failed so far, and i have maybe 1 or 2 used games in my collection.
I can see why the companies involved would believe in a push this position, but I think in the end business would be worse. I don't think a lot of people (myself included) can afford more than a few 60 dollar games a year. I play a lot of games by renting and borrowing, occasionally through buying used. I know if this came to pass I would put a hard stop on preordering any games and wouldn't buy any games full price, and I don't think I'd be alone in this.

Used games have their importance but it does not mean that no one will buy new games.I think both will run simultaneously.
Btw, (s)he really does do hair transplant in Pakistan.
In relation to the topic, I have been buyin g a fe used PS2 games here in Japan, but if I got a new system, I would probably buy new due to trust and warantee.
In relation to the issue of blocking used games from a system, looking at it from an industry point of view, it doesn't make sense and wont happen IMO. Firstly GameStop makes 2 billion a year, and assuming that they make 50% from used games (just a guess) that is still a lot of money to loose, and this is one company in one country. There are other used games companies outside the US, so I am sure these companies would be lobbying console makers to allow some way for their business to continue.
As some other Axeheads have said, they trade games into buy new games, used games act as advertising/low cost barrier to franchises, and other promotional materials, and don't think for a second that SONY/Microsoft/Nintendo don't realise this.
The industry is working towards digital distribution, and the money that would be put into a console that blocks used games, and if only one console did it would hamper sales of that console in the market. Imagine if Microsoft did this but SONY didn't, which console would you buy?
The only way I see this happening, is that the console makers may be looking at ways to reduce pirating further that may impact the used game market to enable console manufactuers to get in to markets where piracy is high like Asia and South America.
Now I am off to Pakistan to get me some new hair, I really don't see the point of spaming here for this product. I suppose it's called spam for a reason.
Yeah I'm surprised that we have spammers on these forums, he's definitely hitting the right audience.
Anyway, I agree with all that. It doesn't make much business sense in the current economy(but really I don't know anything about business) Eventually the whole industry will move to digital distribution and cut off used games indirectly.

I actually don't like used games that much. I can see how some people like the idea of used games, but is it still relevant today? Why would you get a game for 40 bucks used (new price 60) while you can probably get it new for like 45 bucks at some or other site? Why would you wait for a game to be turned in used for 40 bucks, while you could just wait a tad longer for the game price to drop to that point? Why would you wait for a used game if you truly wanted to play that game as soon as possible? If you are going to wait at all, just wait until the game is 30 bucks and save even more money.
There are craploads of great games out today, so you barely have those moments where there isn't anything to play, even if you are waiting for a price drop.
I guess it's just not my thing. Meanwhile, I feel good about supporting the developers for buying a game at full price. At the same time, I sometimes feel like pirating a game just because they want to come out with exclusive GameStop content (ahum… Darksiders II) that you simply cannot play unless you get it at GameStop; which there aren't any in the Netherlands, so I'm pretty much fucked out of that even if I wanted to get it.
I won't pirate Darksiders II though, don't worry. The game is too awesome for that. I'm just saying sometimes I feel like a developer deserves my money with it's strategy, other times I feel they are so disconnected from the actual player that they only care about exclusive deals that makes them more money; in which case I don't feel I need to support them fully.
