So I finally got my characters rolled for the Republic and Sith sides. While I am a bit underwhelmed by SWTOR's character creation options, it is quite a bit of fun to play around with different looks. Where my OCD really comes out is in trying to choose a name. I don't know how much import anyone else places on choosing a name for their character, but I feel some great pressure from it.
So, last night after I had locked in on the looks of my new characters I grabbed a couple of screens and stared at them most of the night; agonizing over what to call these two. For my new Jedi Consular, I wanted him to be Volstagg, but I didn't want to just call him "Vol'stag" or something like that. So I started thinking about where Volstagg came from as a character. Of course, that would be Shakespeare, he's based on Falstaff, but that didn't really yield any ideas.
So, I went back to Volstagg as my starting point. I was web drifting and came across a few pages that jogged my memory about him being referred to as the "Lion of Asgard." That set off a light bulb somewhere and I started looking for Old Norse names for lions. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything that really inspired me as they were almost identical to Latin (leo, leon, ljon).
But then I thought maybe a word for 'cat' could work so I started pulling references and came across a few interesting choices. Skogkatt is the word for a Forest Cat, which really set things in motion as my oldest cat, Chewbacca, is a tom cat with strong Norwegian Forest Cat lineage. Feeling I was on the right path, I kept digging and discovered that 'fress' was the Viking word for 'tom cat.' At that point I felt like I'd hit the mark, the word could work as a first, last, or hyphenated (the Wan in Obi-Wan) name and also had a neat connection to my own Fress.
Now I wanted to pair it with something that would convey Volstagg's love of food and beer and all things festive, so I started digging for a word for 'feast.' Of course the obvious choice is 'jól' (yule) which was the winter-feast that the christians later co-opted and became christmas. So, digging through different forms of that word I came up with 'jólum' and decided to roll with that. So, in the end, after flipping a coin over which name would come first I named my big-in-the-waist-as-well-as-the-heart Jedi, Jólum-Fress; which (in Old Norse) would make him The Tom-Cat of The Winter Feast…or something.
Having had good luck with the Viking vocabulary, I decided to do the same with my bounty hunter. I knew I wanted to play a Chiss, having been so inspired by Grand Admiral Thrawn when I first read the Zahn trilogy back in high school. So, I started researching Thrawn on Wookieepedia and came across the reference to him commanding House Phalanx. That got the wheels turning and I thought a reference to that might lead somewhere interesting.
I knew 'phalanx' was the greek word for 'finger' so I thought the Old Norse word for finger might be appropriate. Unfortunately, the norse word is 'fingr,' which shouldn't come as a shock since so many modern english words are derived from norse, but I felt it lacked… subtlety.
So, I thought instead about the word for 'hand.' There's plenty of ties back to the man-in-white, The Hand of Thrawn and so forth, and I hoped I could find more appropriate Viking vocabulary to match. While the majority of choices didn't quite grab be (hond, mund, hendi), 'handar' caught my eye. For some reason I thought of gundark and it just seemed to have the right quality I was looking for.
So I knew at that point I was creating a character who would either be, or be thought to have, the-hand-of-something-or-other. But hand of what? I started thinking about monsters from Viking lore: snakes, wolves, and dragons. I came across a reference that talked about dragons being a symbol for greed in norse poetry. I thought that would a perfect fit for a mercenary bounty hunter so I started pulling words for serpents and dragons, where I found Draki (dragon).
I thought 'Draki' was a bit much, but 'Drak' sounded good to my ear. So, I dubbed my Chiss bounty hunter Drak-Handar: The Hand of Greed.
Sometime after I created both characters it dawned on me that I might be completely bat-shit-insane for what I'd just gone through. So, I tell you this tale to ask you this question: how did YOU pick the name(s) for your character(s)? Does it have meaning for you? Do you just go for something funny or ironic (I did briefly consider 'Obesity Kills' for my Jedi). How much time do you spend trying to come up with something before you just give up and call him 'Betty?'

Offlinewell for me i normally give my character a name from a show i watch or just come up with a funny name for example i used to play world of warcraft and had a tauren character that i called browncowdown as kind of a pun on black hawk down the movie. but other then that i never really put too much thought into my characters names.

Offlineboy, and i thought i was crazy. I already reroll one character that was already lvl 15 because i couldnt stand the name any longer. Normally i look reference from mythology as well, norse, greek, egyptian, african…sometimes i look into tolkien's books, mostly silmarillion. But this time i picked names that had nothing to do with that, for my bounty i knew i was going for a pyro build, so i look for something related, and got to Flame, for my jedi kight i pick some realted to game and to our guild name, so i ended up with GoldenAxe. ;)

OfflinePretty fuckin awesome Brent, Kinda wierd seeing someone with the amount of passion you`ve got for norse myth reasoning, and explaining to the extent your doing who aint norwegian, are you by any chance of norwegian linage? Or how did your facination for Vikings and the myths around them come to life?
Love everything around my country`s history and myth and seeing a "kindered spirit" that actually knows how much of an influence it has had on modern society is rare, and awesome.
My passion was born from learning that my father is in direct relations to a Viking named "Tore Hund" and researching in and around that subject in highschool, which ended in my using more or less any chance I could get to work with anything related to the Viking era and/or mythology.
As for my nick, is usualy "Scralotos" which i have no idea of how it come to mind, just poped into my head sitting down behind my computer when I was like 10 years old, and have yet to this date found someone who has the same handle, and therefor kept it.
Though I usualy use something Norse or Viking related when creating a char all depending on mood and etch =)
And Kudos on the handles Brent, awesome research and reasoning for picking em, and I love that you made a post about it aswell =)
working my ass of atm with 10-15 hour work days, so cant find much time to play, but will drop by sooner or later under this handle, on the republic side.

OfflinePicking names has always been difficult for me as well. The first MMO I played was Final Fantasy XI on PS2. At the time, I had just finished reading Hamlet for the first time in high school and ever since then, it has been one of my favorite plays. I didn’t like the idea of just naming my character Hamlet, so I went with the pseudo-antagonist: Fortinbras. The coincidental thing at the time was that either the first or second Onimusha game had come out, and other people I ran into liked that I named my character after the main villain in that series. And it’s stuck with me all this time, so now with SWTOR I have two characters named Fortinbras, both for my main in a guild on another server and for the EBA guild. I didn’t play FFXI long though and it wasn’t until several years later that I tried out WoW. I went with Fortinbras again for my main, and continued the trend when I made an alt, Laertes after another antagonist in Hamlet. So when I made alts, for both of my SWTOR guilds, I named them Laertes as well.
Brent, the real problem that you might run into, and this is for anyone thinking about making multiple characters, is the Legacy system once you beat you Chapter 1 in SWTOR. This creates a surname that will carry across all your characters no matter the faction. It does not carry across servers though. When I hit that point with my first character, I had three other ones all around level 10 that I had to take into consideration. I needed to come up with one last name for Fortinbras and Laertes but also (and any EBAer should like these next two) Parzival and Daisho.
After talking with someone in my main’s guild that was good at picking names he suggested that, given the Nordic influence of Fortinbras, I could go with dane followed by some kind of descriptor, suffix, or prefix. That’s where I was inspired, his suggestion reminded me of a line in Beowulf where someone refers to their troops as Speardanes. Literally, a dane who wields a spear. I liked that but it didn’t seem right to me for all four or for the SW universe, so I thought on it some more and decided to go with Sunspear. It seemed vaguely familiar after I picked it, so I looked it up online and saw that it is the seat of power for House Martell in the George RR Martin books (I’ve only made it through the first two books so far). Best of all it seemed to fit all four, and I will likely use it again for the EBA guild. So if anyone has a character on Shadowlands and you see Fortinbras Sunspear, Rider of the Maelstrom (that’s my current title) feel free to say hello or done bear. Thus ends my ramblings.

I was interested in mythology (Greek and Roman) at a young age and I got interested in Norse mythology, and then culture, in my late teens. I was fascinated by the dichotomy of a people that were painted (by mostly christian scholars) as being oafish barbarians, yet they were arguably the most prolific explorers of their time; their boat-craft and ability to navigate was incredibly sophisticated. They were also a very self-reliant people, which is always a quality I admired.
Probably the real 'eureka moment' was in reading about Valhalla and Norse ideas on the afterlife. When I was young, my parents were church-goers and I went to a christian school for a few years around the age of eight to ten. I vividly remember a teacher explaining to us one day that heaven was a place where people just basked in god's light because it made them so happy. I got in trouble when I told my friend (a little too loudly) that it sounded REALLY boring. But Valhalla, by comparison, sounded amazing. Every day a microcosm of mortal existence: battle, feast, life, and death. I guess their culture just made sense to me in a way others did not.
As I started learning about how profoundly the Norse have shaped modern, western culture I kind of became an evangelist-of-viking-awareness. I used to drive my friends nuts pointing out all these things (like the days of the week and countless words) that are directly lifted from Norse culture or the pagan roots of christmas in the jól-fest. Anyway, all the viking talk eventually earned me the 'viking brent' moniker.
As for lineage? I'm Irish, so I suppose I could make the claim that my ancestors were most likely raped by Vikings, but beyond that, no direct connection that I'm aware of. ;)

Offline@Brent
Honestly, half the time I'll use the random name generator and sound out the word… then keep hitting the randomize button while sounding out words, and then combine parts of the words until I hit on one that sounds good. Sometimes I'll look into mythology as well, but not quite as much as what you went through.
@Tannermh
The Legacy name is the one I mull over the most. Even though, it adds the surname to all of your characters on the server, you can still hide the name in the options menu though. You can also display it as a title ("The ___ Legacy") under your character's name. On my first character, I actually tried just closing the Legacy window when it asks you to enter a name, but every time you zone it pops back on screen again =/

OfflineSweet dude, I myself loved the "viking believes". But my love for my country and its mythology(and to an extent, hate for christianity and how they forced our population to either die or reform) only grew, as I discovered how much of an influence "we" had in modern day, how we`re among a few "elite" nations to "conquer" a wide amount of land and countries, but not force the populations to reform, but rather use their earlier experience from trading and being merchants, to "buy" land with the cities and land they conquered for their own people.
rambling a bit here, but what made me even more obsessed with studying them, and what they did was finding out to what extent they where revered throughout the world as some of the best merchants and elite guardsmen for hire before they started pilaging and conquering france, england and all the other so called "empires" that where around at those times(the sacking of london bridge and conquering Paris to buy normandie among my favorites, also stories about how Vikings where the prolly long before Colombus in Vinland).
Having Trade routes from Norway – Afrika – India and Russia, across all of europe and to Greenland.
All of this done with a population that cant even begin to be compared to any other "great nation" that has risen and fallen through history, is just aweinspiring and gives me a feeling of pride that is truly amazing.
Love my Norway and most of what it stands for both at current times and earlier in modern history.
And love talking and discussing history in all shapes and forms not just norse.
Should be said though that im not one of those crazy fanatics that have anything against anyone, and cant even being to describe the amount of sadness I`ve got by the fact that some of the worst scum in human history (nazi`s) have taken it upon themselfs to use my beloved myth and its history and icons for their awefull propaganda and it makes me sick just thinking about the way they`ve taken Mjølnir and made it one of "their symbols" making it close to impossible for me to wear the ONE fucking jewlery i would ever consider wearing, my Mjølnir neckless, as a ton of immigrants in norway see it as a sign of being a neonazi.
And yeah, being of irish decent prolly means theres some norse in you, quite a huge amount of Norwegians settled in Irland and Scotland while pilaging and trading there. Seing your hair and eye colour might atleast suggest it ;)

OfflineMy character's names: Quintus, Jullius, Augustus have obvious Roman ties. This came about when I unlocked my first character's legacy system. His name was Nero, another Roman name. For those who do not know, the legacy system is a shared "family tree" system that players can level up and unlock bonuses for their character (in the future). In its current form, the system is another experience bar to level up and a last name. I was intrigued by the prospect and decided to use "Caesar" as my legacy name. So I decided to keep a theme going across my characters by naming them all after Roman Emperors (Quintus being the exception).
In terms of why I chose Roman names, in particular, I always enjoyed Roman history. More importantly I was fascinated by the idea that the fall of an Empire would send the Western world into a Dark Age that would take centuries to recover and obtain similar knowledge and philosophy.
Well the name for my character is important but i never realy go as in depth as you do Brent. But i sometimes whip up ranom leters or a random name just pops up in my head and i sometimes stick a ´ or a `and sometimes a ' to the word and it instantly looks and sounds beter. Sure i cant say the damn word half the time but im my head is tounds cooler. And as of sometime in march we will get a legacy addon like thing whare we can make a famely tree for our character. And the legacy name is your characters last name. I belive its called surename? Or somethin like that idk. But i DO have a name in mind for a sith character on the Hanharr server but i dont know what race she is goin to be but i have figured out a neme that i want. Just hope its avaible. ![]()

OfflineAlso worth mentoning that You where the reason I carved this site out as one of my absolute favorite sites out there, gaming related. Because of the constant mentioning of Vikings and whatnot, and still is.
Hope you`ve still got alot more gaming journalism in you and keep on doing what you`ve been doing with this site for a long time to come, as its among my absolute favorite pastime hobbies, following You and this site, and the banter and just pure rediculousness of the podcast, along with a superb interaction from you guys with the community and the community being as freakin good as it is \o/
I started off on an RP server, so I'm very much into putting a lot of thought into my characters, I've been roleplaying on sites such as livejournal much longer than I've been gaming online, so I take acuracy and consistency of my character seriously. I have a male human jedi knight, a female rattaki bounty hunter, and just made a male imperial inquisitor, who I really didn't expect to become so interested in.
I'll just describe my inquisitor for the moment, easier if I break this up across the thread.
Chapter III – Slave Names and Latin
I was just looking through the character creator when I saw the slave brands in place of scars, and realized that it was a great basis for a character to play. I made him with the leanest body type, not muscular, not trained, just fit enough for labour but not a warrior honed for combat, and I careully chose a complexion that had signs of sunburn and tan lines implying he'd been working in a mask or goggles for long periods of time in the sun, and his slave brand covers both sides of his face and his neck, not obtrusive enough to obscure his features, but still impossible to hide.
So I set about looking for a good name for him. A slave of the sith, given a chance at bloody freedom through toil and sacrifice, he'd be hateful, and violent, but not without cunning and guile. His hate and agressiveness would be reserved mostly for nobles, sith, jedi, beings that were considered "above" others. (When I hit Alderaan, he's going to kick it up a notch for sure) He needed to be comparably rather understanding and empathetic towards slaves and common soldiers, and at best a wary ally of the sith masters he encounters, with a plan to kill every master he's given. So how do I name an inquistor who persues personal power at the expense of the empire's upper caste? I could just name him Daniel Kaiser and be done with it, but I decided to find an authentic Star Wars universe name, so I started to look at the languages of the universe.
Enslaved by the sith, bitterly resenting the figures of authority, I needed a name to signify wrath and revenge, a new slave name he marks himself with as resentment of his past, a bitter taunt to the other sith lords to spit on their privileged positions and self-entitlement. I looked through huttese, sith and even bocce for good words, but revenge was beyond the vocab of these words. I'd used Mando'a for my bounty hunter, since Mandalorian is now a perfectly usable conlang thanks to good old Karen Traviss, but it wasn't appropriate for my inquisitor. So I looked back to (Get over the stigma) Phantom Menace, and looked specifically at the Tatooine sections for the slaves, and there at least, there's an awful lot of finnish being spoken. XD It seemed fairly consistent in the slave ecosystem there, so I took the Finnish word for vengeance, Kostaa, and shortened it to be more crisp, harsh sounding, and less reminiscent of my favourite coffee shop. And that's how he became Kost.
And his first name? One that reflects his newfound status and ambition. High galactic even predates ToR, originating in 17,000 BBY (before battle of Yavin), it uses a written format identical to latin, so I had either Adeo or Mereo to pick from. My trusty latin dictionary told me Adeo to represent an undertaking, that he's working to seize satisfaction in power over the sith that once beat him down. Mereo to obtain by service, earn completely, deserve well. To seize and obtain through service, to deserve and completely earn his victory, it echoed the sith code all to well.
Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
My name is Mereo Kost. And I will have my revenge. with a vengeance.

OfflineThe way that I create my character names is actually much the same way as yours Brent but instead of a Norse inspiration mine is more centered around Latin and Greek/Roman mythology, though I can't say that I'm as passionate or bothered to research the subject as much of the subject as you did, mostly using Latin to create my own names because I knew there are words in the English language that are based on Latin prefixes/suffixes (more-so in science oriented terms but I digress).
So far I have two characters in SWTOR that I have created on Master Zhar Lestin already, prior to the announcement of the server selection, and their names are Leonimus, my lv 50 Trooper Vanguard, and Valderec, my lv 31 Jedi Sentinel, and anyone who knows Latin terminology could probably get the source words I used from both. I spent plenty of time with an English-to-Latin translator to find the words "Leo" and "Animus" for my Vanguard, so now he is the "Lion's Soul" and for my Sentinel the source words are "Valde" and "Rector," or the "Great Leader."
It's a practice I've used a few times in MMO's in recent memory and I've found it a satisfactory way (at least for me) to create original-sounding names that I can still appreciate well into a characters lifetime that doesn't sound too gimmicky or unoriginal, so I can definitely appreciate the similar process you described.
Respect to you guys. I could never be that original. I'm a simple man. I'm nGAGE or nGAGEOnline… and I get into real trouble when I need to think of anything else, or think in general, for that matter.

OfflineI usually come up with strong names. Like Darius and Vash are some cool names, and then I do some variations depending on genre. Like Star Wars Vashaan, or Vashûl or some such. This time I made took my own name since it is old Norse anyway I chose the old spelling of my name, basically just putting an H in the middle an viola! My name on Hanharr is Frithjof, Jedi.. hoping to join Knights of the Axe.

OfflineIf you had that hard of a time just choosing one name its going to be a nightmare choosing your legacy surname seeing as it is for all your characters. I'm currently considering everything from favorite animal (wolf) to favorite anime characters and even favorite band members (either Tankian or Odadjian both from System of a Down) . A couple other things are running threw my head such as Azrael (angle of death), Shepard (ME3), Cerberus (Greek mythology and i guess a ME3 tie in as well), and even Donebear… Ok that last one only briefly went threw my mind please don't boot me.
