Modern Warfare 2 is going to be huge, no doubt about it. A game of the year contender even before anyone had seen it; it’d be just about impossible to screw up the release of such a highly anticipated game. And yet, Infinity Ward found a way.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there’s anything that can threaten its sales. But the release has been tainted by a string of calamitous decisions leaving some gamers wondering if Infinity Ward wants them reaching for their wallets or their ankles on Nov 10th.
It started small, with the news back in July that the UK would pay five quid more for the sequel than the original Modern Warfare. Activision saw the hype reaching critical mass and figured they could get away with it. More recently, we’ve learned that the PC version of MW2 is going to cost ten dollars more than last time too.
But over the past few weeks, I’ve begun to question how much of a sure thing it really is; at least if you’re a PC gamer. There was the news that MW2 wouldn’t support running on dedicated servers. Favoring instead to handle all multiplayer through a new online service: IW.net. Ifinity Ward says the reason is they’re trying to to eliminate cheaters and enormous skill-gaps in multiplayer matches.
Fair enough, but they’re also eliminating mods, clan servers and tons of other things that have come to define PC gaming. Why not do both? According to IW’s Jason West, “We’re just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners,” which is a congenial way of saying hardcore PC players aren’t a priority for them.
Over 165,000 people have signed their name to a petition, urging Infinity Ward to reconsider their position. Unfortunately, the PC crowd is in a bad position here. Console gaming is king these days and the PC’s numbers are dwindling. If they really mounted a full-on boycott (which many are attempting) and are successful in taking a bite out of MW2′s PC sales, I fear there may not even be a Modern Warfare 3 on PC.
Its a terrible position to be in and my heart goes out to the PC crowd who just want to enjoy all the features they’ve become accustomed to on their platform of choice. For the PC stalwarts who helped make the original MW the game that it is and who played no small part in building the enormous hype and anticipation for the sequel, its poor repayment for all the loyalty they’ve shown this franchise.
Game of the year? Maybe. Sure fire top-seller? Probably. But at what cost? Wouldn’t you rather sell a gamer your next three games instead of pissing them off so much this is the last thing they ever consider buying from you? The great thing about free markets is there’s always someone just around the corner who wants your customers and is willing to deliver a great product -and- treat people right to earn them. At the end of the day, charging more for a game with less features may end up costing Infinity Ward and Activision more than they realize.

The only people that care about PC gaming any more is PC gamers and like you said their population is shrinking rapidly. As developers realize that PC gamers (75%) just pirate games anyways they will start moving their development exclusively to closed systems that are much harder (or less common) to pirate on.
I think West’s explanation of “player experience” is blatant nonsense. If they’re so keen on providing a level playing field and “priorizing player experience”, why not give PC gamers the option of either going via the matchmaking system or using Ye Olde Server Browser and dedicated servers?
Ok, so let’s look at PC piracy vs online gaming. The people who play pirated games play almost exclusively single player games while the people, who play multiplayer more often than not end up buying the game. This isn’t to say that servers and clients cannot be cracked in order to play online with a pirated version of the game, but it’s generally such a hassle that, in addition to a severely reduced selection of servers, that alone is more than enough reason to just fork out the money for the game.
So, with this in mind, the lack of dedicated servers pretty much eliminates all cracked servers, but if that’s the sole reason, the price of killing a few hundred cracked servers is incredibly high and might end up coming back to bite IW/Activision on the arse. Besides, Valve seems to be doing quite brilliantly with Steam and dedicated servers.
Piracy might be rampant on the PC (Not sure how Wheat_Thins came up with his unexplained 75% though), but when you move to online gaming, you’ll find that the amount of pirating going around comes crashing down. And there have been several cases where it’s become apparent that if your product is actually good instead of this generic nonsense, people will buy it on the PC.
P.S.
“The only people that care about PC gaming any more is PC gamers…” And the only people who care about cake are people who like cake. Wonder what the point here was?
I really do blame Activision for this whole fiasco. I feel like IW is just following their lead, even though it’s a dumb one.
I believe what he meant was that the only people that care about PC gaming anymore are the hardcore PC gamers: ones that refuse to buy consoles because they’re “inferior”, the modding community, etc. Most others have jumped ship from the PC.
Actually handling a release in a way that Activision and IW is doing right now, makes the PC population shrink faster, or makes PC gamers pirate it after all. I did preorder MW2 and I would also be willing to pay more for it, but with all the features that should be in there…now I do think about not getting it at all. Greed leads to worse.
It’s to fight piracy? Let’s wait and see because the decisions theyve made so far on this game I have heard alot of people say they wont buy the game and instead will pirate it for the single player….
Shot in the foot comes to mind -__-
Y’know, I’m inclined to also think that it’s the latest antichrist commonly known as Activision, who’s behind all this nonsense. One would think IW had more sense than to pull crap like this.
Bobby Kotick FTL! this guy is turning Activision into the old EA. EA learned their lesson and have been spending the past few years revamping their structure and business model. I guess the gaming industry cannot go without one at least one evil among it. Activision is taking a strange stand and is planning to pump out games like crazy. usually when that happens say good bye to quality because deadline is coming way too fast for developers to make things work right.
PC gamers are too small an audience to pitch to publishers and in reality if it were not for consoles, we would not get half the games we do. Publishers want numbers that add up to ridiculous profit and unless your blizzard and have the numbers and the revenue to begin with, then its a difficult feat to say the least for Developers to provide that for them. This is not the end all be all but it is the main factor in the industry today. The first things out of any publisher rep. that I have heard is “What’s the game about?” and then shortly after “All consoles right?”
This whole situation on PC gaming pisses me off. Yeah i pirated a game or 2 here and there. but i buy a good portion of games, mostly on Steam. i love my pc and gaming on it. Mt PS3 and 360 are here to serve my needs 2 but i am a pc gamer at heart, i love what it stand for, and now this just makes the Pc look inferior. i love to mod my pc, new components, tweak settings, go into servers with crazy stats and whatnot, now none of that? Thank you IW. I remember when Call of Duty 1 came out, i ran to my local Babages to buy it and supported the series the whole way through on pc on to be treated like a inferior human and gamer who likes to play differently. i can safely say they are not getting my $60, My torrent is getting a seeder and Hamachi is getting my business.
Ah, the rising groans and whining of people who realize that their favorite developer isn’t the dreamy prince they make it out to be.
Epically awesome 50th episode guys.
Not so much a battle cry as a shop-around cry, but here in the UK I’ve found a place that is taking pre-orders for COD:MW2 for £39.99 rather then the £44.99 that most people are charging.
Of all places, TOYS R US (http://www.toysrus.co.uk/index.jsf?fh_eds=%EF%BF%BD&fh_search=modern+warefare+2&fh_refpath=facet_1&fh_refview=lister&fh_view_size=10&fh_start_index=0&fh_location=%2f%2ftrus%2fen_GB%2fcategories%3C{trus_trus}%2fitemtype%3dproduct&fh_reffacet=categories&omitxmldecl=yes).
I went in at the weekend, and found they don’t have copies of Batman AA, Borderlands OR Uncharted 2 in the PS3 top 10….ergo, they’re not selling them adult type games. But a big ass Soldier in desert camo gear, with a big ass MODERN WARFARE 2 advert and a big ass 18 CERT proclaimed they would be taking pre-orders at £39.99. (Price may increase on release)
Is this a case of Toy r us standing up to activision, and maybe making a loss on pre-orders, or is this activisions way of siding with the “shops” by SAYING they’re gonna charge a fiver more, which then lets the shops charge a fiver more and deffer blame back to activision.
I dont give a fuck, cos I’m not a fan of FPS’s anyway, so I wont be buying MW2 anyway.
VIVE LA REVALUTION & FUCK BOBBY KOTIC IN HIS FAT WHITE A$$.
I wonder what the reaction will be to the new gameplay footage that was leaked earlier today.
I see this turning into another spore situation. Where the pissed of PC gamers pirate it out of spite. Naturally evil Activision will just turn around and say, “Told ya so”, but such is the irony of the internet.
Well that’s some solid BS.
I’ve actually been trying to decide which MW to buy for the multiplayer experience. Now that I’ve read this I will probably just buy MW1 and bittorrent MW2 for the solo campaign. Smooth move Activision, hope you rot in hell.

And this is why pc sales are wayyyyyyyy down!
I for one will not be buying this game for most of the reason listed above, and for the fact that in recent years activision has become some real assholes. I have been playing COD games since the first was released on PC, own all of the other entries of the series on PC and consoles and this will be the first COD game i will not buy. Thank you activision for destroying a great franchise with your arrogance and stupidity. Infinity ward deserves a better publisher, the day they find a new publisher is the day i start to buy their games again.
Yeah, because PC gamers have a temper and they don’t like if someone is screwing them. And naturally developers migrate to consoles, they are more casual gamers there and they don’t care how fuck’d up they’ll be.
Good to see you won’t be playing MW3 when they won’t even bother bringing it to the PC.
They don’t bother bringing MW3 to PC, they don’t get paid. Don’t forget, they need us to buy games to stay in business, we don’t need them to put out games to stay alive.
And just to point out how stupid your defense for their crappy new server browser is, they can never stop anyone from playing COD1-5, whereas with MW2 they could just turn IW.net off and you own a $60 coaster.
This is a bullshit move, and they know it, but greed is king. No more free maps, pay us for maps. No more free mods, pay us for mods.
would like to say a big thank you to the axe for being one of the only sites writing about this situation and not being condescending to the PC community. much love to you guys for that
personally i think there is dedicated server support but, and here is where it gets F*cked up, you have to rent the servers from IW. if you look back on some other PC games that have tried the matchmaking thing this was the only way to get legit server support. as you can guess it didnt work all too well for them either
