Microsoft confirmed Kinect’s voice recognition system will support only four languages at launch: US English, UK English, Mexican Spanish and Japanese.
Qu’est-ce que l’enfer?
Mainland Europe, Australia, Canada and all other Kinected countries will have to wait at least until Spring 2011 for their specific voice recognition region to be activated. Until then, regions will be locked out of the voice system entirely, meaning even if a main-lander knows how to speak one of the four supported languages, Kinect no podrá hacerlo.
Lidia Pitzalis of Microsoft España explained to Eurogamer.es the decision to block languages by region is to ensure users don’t have any “frustrating experiences” with foreign accents. As a West Coast resident, I think Louisianans have foreign accents, but Microsoft seems confident Kinect will have no trouble recognizing anything in the States or across the UK.
What do our foreign commenters think about the exclusion of so many languages at Kinect’s launch? Do you think this will this affect Kinect sales in the excluded regions? ¡Nos diga aquí!

Like I said in the forums… totally puzzled by this… don’t get it… at all. Not just from a gaming perspective… just… WHY?
No, this will not effect Kinect’s sales at launch in those countries. Most of Kinect’s target audience doesn’t visit gaming websites such as this one.
Kinect is what we in the industry refer to as a ‘fail’.
Yep as I told all of you floks in an other MS post the rumors have been confirmed… Honestly this seems like the most rushed piece of technology I’ve ever seen.,, apart from windows Vista that is…
too bad it doesn’t recognize everything else.
Have you seen the videos of people playing Sonic Free Riders with kinect, is like no controller, or control for that matter
Microsoft should delay Kinect until Spring 2011(like everything else). Then everyone will get all the features, and maybe they will lower the price. Also some good Kinect games will be out.

Holy ethnic profiling Batman, now that’s how you profile a group of people by a whole state or region, I’m pretty sure that people from Louisiana feel the same about West Coast people as well. Maybe they can patch it later with some Rosetta Stone software to make it more phonetically friendly to other regions of the world. Laissez les bon temps roulet (that’s Louisianan for “Let the good times roll” for all you “Westies” out there)
So wait, US English is different than Canadian English? huh, thats news to me.
Good thing I won’t be getting Kinect anyways because it will suck
You’d think that they would run out of places to shoot themselves in the foot when it comes to this piece of cra… hardware.
Im going one step forward and saying kinnect is a rascist bomb waiting to explode… if you were born in a different country but if you live in another country and speak the language, but its not the perfekt pitch then is this software gonna recognize it??!! why dont they just include a language pack deal for free download and let us choose the languages… also why would i even use it… never used voice rec’nition on my mobile, pc, other devices cause it makes me sound like a fool…
I seriously don’t understand this whole regional locking thing, and frankly I think it goes against the producer. For example, living in Belgium, I’m forced to recieve XBL in either French or Flemmish, which means that although I have my language set to English, all XBL menus are limited to those 2 languages. If I order a movie over Zune, I have to either watch it in French, or in many cases not watch it at all, because the library is smaller in Flemmish (Dutch).
So about Kinect – I don’t understand why the hell you decide NOT to give your customers OPTIONS, even when those options already exist, so it doesn’t require any additional expense by the seller. Being that in today’s day and age, people move arround alot, and maybe in 5 years time I will live in Spain for example, why the hell someone decides that choosing to get my product in English all over Europe is a bad thing.
Again in Kinect example, I speak both French and English, but my English accent will always be better than my French, so even when they do localize Kinect for France/Belgium, I will still prefer to get my gaming in English.
Considering how small the world is today, we should have more choice and not less.
I don’t understand why Microsoft spends so much money on Japan. The Japanese people hate Microsoft, and the 360 is never gonna do well there. If Blue Dragon couldn’t sell 360s, nothing will.
Canada? Most Canadians speak English…and sound just like Americans..it should work fine right off the bat, lol.
@MS
Germans hate you right now.
Umm, were you seriously offended by that.
Being a non-native English speaker, I find that most speech recognition software just fails to keep up with my constantly fluxuating accent
Having picked up a truckload of different accents by talking online with British (Ireland and Scotland included) people from all over the place, my accent ends up being a bit of a mix’n'match of different pronunciations and try as I might, the speech recognition software just can’t keep up. Hence I’ve pretty much given up on speech recognition altogether
why not others have been offended by far less than that, so point your holier than thou finger elsewhere junior.
and epic fail.
Yet another fail by Microsoft. Sold my 360 + Kinect to a friend. Sick & tired of the bullcrap. I’ve paid as much as the ppl in the US or UK, so at least i’d expect them to keep their promise with the voice recognition etc etc… Let the ppl use the english voice recognition i say. At least it gives them what they paid for in full. Grtz from Belgium
