February 16, 2010 wasn’t exactly a Tuesday for the ages…it was more like a release date that will go down in gaming infamy. Topping the list was SEGA’s Aliens vs. Predator, a game that despite its level of potential seems to have delivered with all of the beauty and grace of a facehugger on Valentine’s Day. Then, there was a much lesser hyped game that, depending on your experience with the franchise, had the potential to become somewhat of it’s own classic..that game is Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce. Since it’s original release on the PlayStation console in 1997, the Dynasty Warriors franchise has slowly evolved over time (for better or worse depending on who you ask), and it is easily one of KOEI’s most successful ongoing series.
With that being said, I want to tell you a story. Although I’ve been somewhat disenchanted by the game over the past couple of releases, the PSP release of Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce wasn’t that bad, so when the demo was released on Xbox Live, I checked it out and thought the online co-op gameplay (for up to 4 players) and the weapons/ leveling system was pretty sweet, so my brother-in-law and I decided to pick up the game. We figured the inclusion of the 4 player co-op would be an awesome opportunity to share the gaming experience with some of our friends back home. Instead of reserving the game, we figured we would just go out the day of it’s release and pick it up. And so, the story of a Dying Dynasty begins…
My brother-in-law gets off of work at 8:00 PM. He stops by Wal-Mart first (because it’s close to his work). They don’t have the game. The electronics employees have never even heard of it. So, he hops next door to Target – same story. So, he calls me, and the conversation goes something like this:
Brother-in-law: “Dude, I’ve been to Wal-Mart and Target, they don’t have it. They don’t even have it in their ‘system’.”
Me: WTF does that mean? Not in their system? ‘the hell.
Brother-in-law: “I know, i guess I’ll go look at Gamestop and Best Buy”
Me: “Damnit, well I guess, they are sure to have it. I’ll search online, I’ll find a store and text you.”
Brother-in-law: “K, later”
Like the good friend/brother-in-law that I am, I didn’t look up shit. I had stuff to do, plus, I figured he would find the game at the first Gamestop and be home. So, imagine my surprise when he arrived empty handed. He went to 3 different Gamestops and Best Buy – NONE of them had the game. Gamestop said it was in their ‘system’ but they didn’t have copies. Best Buy didn’t have it in their ‘system’ either. *@&$! Systems!!! Just give me the damn game! Alas, it was not meant to be. So, I finally do the search (on Gamestop’s website) and got this:
“Check In-Store Availability” No new products found within 100 miles of this ZIP code.
Dear KOEI,
If I ever wanted to know how a company would go about unselling its game and sabotaging its once great franchise, I certainly know now. I’m not sure why your product is not available in any stores on it’s release date. I’m also not sure why some of these stores don’t have it in their ‘system’. All I know is that you lost 3 sales today. K? Thx. bye.
* Note – our friend that was going to purchase the game in another state also could not find the game. Go figure.
So, in closing, I share this tale of frustration with you, my fellow gamers, in hopes that we can lean on one another in our times of grief…That we can collectively reflect on the slow death of the once great franchises that enthralled, entertained, and inspired. What about you? Do you have any similar stories that you can recall? Feel free to share them below…We’ll consider this therapy or something. In the meantime Imma go play something fun to relieve the pain…and it won’t be Dynasty Warriors…

It’s good to see retailers taking a stand against KOEI releasing the same game whenever they want to.
Wao!! I think I lest those games back after the third PS2 game. Way loooooooong ago.
A terrible launch week… In Canada AVP was delayed apparently due to manual issues (a french manual was not included), Dynasty Warriors was a joke too, although even Phoenix Wright showed up late… The game industry took a week off I guess (Nintendos had like a month off).
This franchise died to me when Samurai Warriors was released. The same damn game with different skins. I just don’t get why people even buy this thing.
I remember when Gundam Warriors came out and pretty much, again, the same damn game with Mecha skins…blah, to be honest the best in the series was Dynasty Warriors 2, and they should have stopped there, because what made this game famous at some point is doing the opposite for it now a days.
This franchise is like a virus, it just clones itself until it makes you really sick.
Cheers Axe heads!
Good riddance. If you played one, you’ve played them all. I was fortunate enough to only play 1, but my friend wasn’t so lucky. After getting tired of the same thing by game 3 or 4, he got Samurai warriors thinking it be different. Disappointing. He got orochi warriors for the same reason and was also disappointed. I’d say Phantagram makes better war games anyways (Kingdom Under Fire, Ninety Nine Nights).
amazon.com has all the games. Why not preorder it there in first place?
Dynasty Warriors as a series is a descent one. The fans know the basics of what they are buying when they bring the case to the register. We are not talking about a triple A series here, like God Of War, Final Fantasy, or Metal Gear, all of which I am a fan, where they are meant to revolutionize the system. Its DW, its suppose to be minding numbing with endless lvl grinding, and waves upon waves of weapon fodder, and when you beat LU BU or Guan Yu on very hard, you feel accomplished about yourself haha. I am a fan of the series ever since Dynasty Warriors 2 minus the Xtreme Legends and Empire series where they were just tacted on excuses for 30-40 bucks for a few missions. Koei was making progress with the series in DW5 and somethings can be commended in DW6, however even as a fan I feel very pissed off and betrayed at DW6. While having a good roster of characters and refreshing the cast, only a handful of key characters were able to go through the story mode and character models were cloned REPEATEDLY. I can’t understand that, PS2 has more character models and story lines than PS3? That doesn’t sound right to me don’t you think. After playing the demo for Strikeforce I was forced to say “no more.” Koei broke the final straw, don’t get me wrong if DW7 came out, and it was a throwback to the PS2 days I would so waste my 60 bucks in a heartbeat to terrorize a stage as Ma Chao, and see the little cut scenes between officers. Until then Koei’s main franchise is going the way of Onimusha. RIP…you will be somewhat missed.
If the game’s rarity is an indication of it’s implending doom… it should be already dead by now. I know this because this same scenario has happened to me before.
On the day DW4 was released, I jaunted into the Gamestop to pick out a copy and bring it home. Several hours and several other Gamestops later, I had to call my family in Virginia to pick up a copy for me and mail it out.
The Dynasty Warriors series isn’t dying anymore than it had before, but it’s not an item that moves very quickly. Save for any pre-orders, Gamestop (and other game stores) won’t order more than one or two copies because they expect to sit on them for awhile. It doesn’t surprise me at all that it wasn’t at Wal-mart or Target the day of release, as it not exactly a high profile game title.
In essence, the game isn’t dying. If anything, it’s doing quite well, considering at least one person per game store in 100 miles had the same idea the two of you had.
I actually brought this game in the release date in a online site. I got it one week later.
Have about 30 hours of gameplay and I only maxed out one character. I never had so much fun with the franchise and it’s a shame it’s not as popular in America.
Except this game is completely different from all other Warriors games ever released.
This one plays as a action rpg based on quick to do missions that often require multiple people playing online to get through. The combat system is completely different, with each character having two distinct movesets (One is customizable) and command moves never seen in the series, making the gameplay similar to Ninja Gaiden game.
This game is Dynasty Warriors focused on what Dynasty Warriors did well in this ten years while introducing a bunch of new ideas.
And it shows, it sold way better than DW6 in the west (In the east, it sold about as much. DW6 sold very well there.)
