It’s official, BioWare’s Mass Effect 2 will be coming to the PlayStation 3 in January 2011. This via an announcement teaser trailer that debuted during the EA Press Conference at GC 2010 in Germany. The teaser, which you can see right here, doesn’t give away anything in terms of enhancements or PS3-specific content, but we’ll expect to hear more pertaining to PlayStation 3 version soon.
Of course, one would now assume that the highly-anticipated Mass Effect 3 will now be a simultaneous multi-platform release, but we’ll just have to wait to get official word on that. Also, those hoping for the original Mass Effect to surface on Sony’s console should remember that it was published by Microsoft exclusively on the PC and 360.
That’s all for now, but feel free to comment on this exciting development in the comments section below.

Greetings and Salutations, my turian brothers of terror, my krogan comrades of carnage, how art thou?
First of all, FINALLY…i’ve been waiting for quite a while for this series to come for the console that i own, it didn’t make it easier with people saying it would never happen and that i just should buy a 360 and the game. These news really made me and lot of other ps3 owners ecstatic for being able to play this game. keep doing a great job at epicbattleaxe
from a fan in Portugal.
ps: Just a little thing Daniel, i think mass effect 1 was indeed published by microsoft…for the 360, for the pc version however, the publisher i believe was EA so it’s highly possible to see ME1 on ps3 as well
Still can’t play the original Mass Effect on the PS3. I see this possibly being a big problem for their PS3 fanbase, that hopefully they will in some way shape or form be able to circumvent, so that the people who only own a PS3 don’t get left out in the cold. However, with Microsoft having the exclusive publishing rights to the first one… It’s a tricky situation for sure.
microsoft just lost another exclusive.
BOOOOM!!! that’s crazy and awesome at the same time!!!!!
Let the shit hit the fan
I’m happy it comes on the ps3, this way more people get to experiance this awesome game.
This is great news! Though PS3 owners will not get a chance, at least for now, to play ME1 , this is a great opportunity for them to experience a really great game.
Glad to see this game come to the PS3. Hopefully they sell it cheaper than $60 (i.e. when Lost Planet was ported it was $40) and hopefully DLC is included on the disk (i.e. Fallout Game of the Year edition, where DLC was exclusive to 360 then packaged together on GOTY for PS3). Looking forward to playing it finally…so i can see why DK$Shizzle loves it so much..
Awesome! I wanted to play this one for a long time! Even thought of buying a 360 for it (and also Gears). Pity the first isn’t coming too =/
Hope it comes with DLC =J
its funny to see x360 fanboys raging
Great news, the more the merrier.
It’s unfortunate that some people couldn’t experience this EPIC adventure just because they owned a different system or didn’t have a powerful enough PC.
Let’s just hope they do a decent job porting it cause GOD knows how much the PS3 has suffered from multi-platform games not taking full advantage of its hardware.
Now, if I could only take my saves from ME 1 on Xbox to Part 2 on the PS3 everything would be perfect. Didn’t play 2 yet because I was confident that we would see a ME Trilogy box on the PS3, coming with the release of ME 3.
good for them. got the first two on xbox so I’ll continue it on xbox, but for those who Havant played it because it wasn’t on other consoles its a good chance.
I remember DK making a battlecry about Bioware trying to sell more units next time around. When he said it, this is what I guessed would happen and sure enough it has.
I think this is a great opportunity for Bioware to get some experience in the PS3 platform. Plus it would refreshing to see a great new western RPG on the PS3.
Can’t say I’m suprised, but I kinda feel bad for ps3 owners who will probably not get the first one. In my opinion even with it’s flaws Mass Effect 1 was a better game overall. Yes the gameplay in ME2 was way better, but I just thought they made the game to much for the Gears of War players and not enough for the hardcore RPG fans.
I would be much more in favor of finding a way to release 1 and 2, somehow, or not bothering at all. Part of the greatness of ME2 was importing my ME1 character and seeing all the choices i made in the first one influence things. I played ME2 on insanity last week, started a fresh game, and it wasn’t nearly as satisfying as when i imported my ME1 character.
PS3 owners won’t get the choice to decide certain peoples fate, it’ll already be decided for them.
Either do it all or not at all, releasing just 2 and not the first one seems like a silly move, especially a year after it’s 360 release.
And the amount of stuff that won’t make sense, reapers, sovereign, Saren, who half the people are… etc etc.
I had never played ME until april, when i heard all the amazing reviews ME2 was getting i had to try it, but figured i had to play the first one first to know what’s happening, and boy would i have been lost if i hadn’t.
I feel the PS3 users are only going to get half the experience, like i said before either release them both or not at all.
Certain games are just too good to exclude one group of gamers from the fun. Mass Effect 2 is one of those games. It pleases me to see a game like this make the jump to becoming a true multiplatform game. Good news for everyone who hasn’t played this thing yet due to it not being available on PS3. Good news for everyone else since this means even more fans for this franchise.
I think that is correct. And so does Bioware.

I hope for the sake of PS3-owners that this means ME1 will also get there (perhaps as some sort of bonus in the same package?) I can tell from experience that the game is a lot less fun without a savefile to import.
Actually, I think they would include something similar to their debug program where the user could relive the first story making choices along the way in a short 5-10 minute interactive introduction then jumping right into the 2nd game without a full ME1.
well can’t say im surprised this was obviously coming…but anyway I’ve been playing the 1st 2 on the 360 so ill still play the 3rd on the 360 and im glad more people get to experience this awesome game although i do think that it is MUCH better with a save file import but still a great game nonetheless….The only thing that will cheese me off is if Bioware give ps3 owners exclusive content coz afterall those who bought it on the 360 and all its DLC are their faithful fans and should not be pushed in the dark just so they can grab more cash
wouldn’t it be funny and glorious if the bonus content they announced for the ps3 ME2 was the DLC and ME1?
Don’t know, they could easily pull it off with Blu-ray.
i’ve seen ME1 being sold at stores for 5.99 euros, and that was months ago, it wouldn’t be that farfetched if they included it with ME2 with the DLC. for me that kind of content is worth the full retail price.
note that they never said exclusive at the conference, they only said bonus content in which i believe to be the DLC already released, and with some luck ME1 is included in there as well.
Hell just froze. That’s how it feels! never thought this game would be multi-plat. awesome news, I always felt like I had missed a great game since I don’t own an xbox, now I’ll get to test it out and see if it really is that good that some(DK) are saying xD
Since PS3 players will not be carrying over any saves and thus consequences of their own – the PS3 version really should have an intro unlike the other 2 versions that explains what has happened thus far and the major consequences.
Like perhaps an explanation of who the characters you should already know are specifically Urdnot Wrex, Ashley Williams and Kaiden Alenko before presenting you with the decision on their fate in the start of the game along with the entire story of Saren, the Reapers, Matriach Benezia, the Thorian, The Rachni.
At least they should get all the codex entries in Mass Effect put into Mass Effect 2, so they can read up on the lore. Having played from the start, I don’t know how much I could appreciate ME2 without the indepth knowledge from ME.
Deciding their fate by pressing a button? you don’t think that would be compltely hollow? same with Codexs, i read some during the game but it’s no substitute for actually playing the game. Someone on GT was defending this (in the commenst section against someone making flamebait statements) by saying they’d read up on ME1 on wikipedia before playing ME2… as if that’s any kind of subsitiute for actually playing it, it really isn’t.
Like i said in a previous comment, release both or none at all, you can’t just start a trilogy in the middle.
When I first heard this story, I was jumping with glee. This series basically turned every gripe I had with RPGs into glowing admiration and to hear that I could finally get Mass Effect 2 for my PS3 instead of having to go to my friends to play it felt like Sony was listening to its customers for once. But then it hit me like it has most of the people on this forum; what good is having the second one without first releasing the first game? One of the franchises best features is the ability to carry over saves to the sequel, a trend BioWare are thankfully continuing with the 3rd. It gives the game more of a personal touch because it allows the player to truly influence the game world without having to use some poorly implemented morality system. PS3 owners may be getting one of the best games around after a long wait, but that experience will only be half of what 360 owners recieved. Now, this shift may bring with it PS3 versions of the 3rd in the series and maybe even the original, but until this is all confirmed, I wouldn’t bother with buying it. That may sound a little strange considering how good the game is on its own, but I think Sony need to secure the entire series before I order my copy. Besides, my friend is at his work all the time whilst I’m a two-hour-a-day student so I’ll be able to play the game anyway.
maybe just maybe they EA, Sony, and M$ can circumvent the exclusivity rights for the first one and they’ll release ME and ME2 as a collection on the PS3, I played the first one on PC and loved it, but never got to play the second.
I don’t really see the point, since ME1 can never be made for the PS3. If someone likes ME and doesn’t own a 360, they probably played it on the PC, and are more than likely going to buy (or pirate) 2 and 3 for the PC as well.
Only a matter of time once Bioware went to EA, I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.
Good for the PS3 players to finally be able to play this stellar game, though I almost feel like it’s almost like getting a partial game if ME1 isn’t included somewhere in there.
Great news!
The larger the fanbase the better will ME3 become and the universe has a better chance to continue.
I’ve played it and every dlc on my xbox and I recommend it to everybody.
