Hey gang, Daniel here closing out this week’s epic Member BattleCries with a rather thought-provoking topic for the weekend. Now, we’re gonna go off the rails a bit here and actually NOT talk about this week’s topic (which was “favorite exclusive franchises“). After all, we’ve already covered God of War, Mass Effect, Halo, and Mario/Zelda/Metroid so far this week. Sure, there are plenty more, but the BattleCry I selected today comes from Axe Head NoFunAtAll and is offers up something I’d really like to get your all’s take on. It’s about the PSN Trophy system and demoralizing gamers who simply don’t want certain bits of DLC. If you’ve ever had the sense of accomplishment that comes from beating a game, then you ought to check out today’s MBC and use the comment section below to join the discussion! Let’s get started after the jump.
NoFunAtAll says:
My BattleCry goes out to the PSN Trophy System and DLC! As of late it has become fashionable for devs to offer DLC to lengthen our game experiences, which I of course am all for! What bugs me however is that, if you choose not to download these packs their respective trophies ARE added and shown in your list.
Now, I’m far from a trophy whore, but if I’ve spent what little time I have to reach 100% platinum in a game I find it really frustrating that when DLC comes along I might not find interesting my 100% Platinum turns into a 56% Platinum on my list. The sense of achievement is completely gone, all that remains is a big, gaping, unsatisfying hole…
Games like Borderlands, Fallout 3 etc… have fucked us over many a times, why not just add the extra trophies upon installing the DLC, and leaving the rest of us who can’t afford to spend +200 hours on a single game feeling emasculated.

Hmmm…that’s a VERY interesting topic and as mentioned, I’m really looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say on the matter. Personally, I think the above suggestion to simply include the additional trophies upon installation of DLC makes the most sense, but do the devs have the right to up the incentive to purchase/acquire the necessary DLC by brining down your accomplishments?
Sound off on the matter below and let us all know what you think. Of course, if you’ve got something else you wanna rant/rave about, we are game for hearing that too and as always, feel free to bring up ANYTHING you’d like pertaining to gaming over on this week’s topics starter post where you can SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

Alright boys and girls, thx as always for jumping into our discussions. Have a great weekend and keep checking in with EBA for more throughout the weekend!
Peace,

In my opinion Trophies and Achievements should be scrapped all together. Games are addictive enough as is. I threw out my Modern Warfare 2 because I was spending too much time playing it. Chasing achievements is the line between hobby and addiction. But that’s just me.
It’s the same on the 360 and it does piss me off. I think the game’s achievements and the DLC achievements should be kept separate, most of the time, you have to choose them from the menu anyway.
Speaking as a trophy hunter, this really doesn’t bother me at all or alot of the other guys on my friends list. Usually, when platinum is achieved,it’s time to move on. Most of the time, DLC does not get played because by the time it does come out, we’ve started other games.
Before trophies came out, most people would’ve been excited if a game even had DLC, now it pisses people off. Go figure.
I think the idea of separating them is nice, but I don’t think devs are going to waste that much time addressing a minor gripe like this.
I completely agree. Achievements/trophies are a legitimate hobby. If someone worked to get 100% in a game for whatever reason (hobby, principle, just for the f of it), it’s not cool to just bump them back and require them to buy DLC.
If you consider DLC like GTA, they’re like two full games (you can even buy them on a standalone disk) so they are basically putting two sets of incomplete game achievements/trophies on your account before you even buy the games. I think I should be able to choose which games go onto my account no?
Agreed with completely!
i 100% agree i fkn hate it when that shit happens but i dont think that they should be taken out all 2gether, its nice having the extra reasons to go back and play an awsome game, i played through Uncharted 2 4x to get my platinum and i loved every single playthorugh. what i do think should be taken out is multiplayer achivs, i like what naughtydog did in uncharted by just adding the complete a game type n get a trophy thats ok but some people just dont like the multiplay aspect of games. i play games to have a good time and sometimes achivements are awsome but when i have to play through grueling multiplayer matches to get trophies it makes me /ragequit and not play the game again. so in other words cut the specific multiplayer achivs and give broad general ones and keep your achivs to perks n lvling like MW2. peace .\m/
I just platinummed Borderlands, and also got all the trophies from Zombie Island, now there’s still some space left because ofthe mad Moxxi DLC which I won’t buy, and in future the trophies for General Knoxx will be added in as well, leaving the total count at about 60% completed or something along the way…
I did’nt know x360 had the same issues…
It’s probably a way to get obsessed trophy hunters to buy their DLC packs, just so they can keep their 100% completion.
Sad tactics, sad indeed

I honestly never thought of this as a problem, since I’ve never been anywhere close to getting a Platinum trophy. I can see where you’re coming from though, but I agree more with AttackOfTheThumbs in having the main game and the DLC separate.
I agree! Its a mean tactic!
If you don’t want to waste your money on a dlc, or just don’t want to spend (even more) time grinding trophies/achievments, it leaves you with a gaping hole there, and this is kind of unsatisfying. Sure it might seem ridiculous for some people that this is an issue for others, but hell – there are a LOT of people who are obsessed with achievments and just want to keep their well earned 100% completion… not my place to judge…
My opinions are kind of mixed on the whole trophy/achievement thing in general. On one hand i’m really into this, and it can be very satisfying to hunt all of them down, on the other hand i belive that sometimes they are just there to ‘artificially’ prolong the play-time of a game…usually demanding to do tedious or insanely difficult stuff that is not very fun.
i dont mind Trophy Achievements as it show yourself and your friends that u can do it on the hardest lvl thing like that, at the end of the day when u buy for a game u want, you want your money worth out of it.
Not all of use can but all the game they want in that year. so if it was not for Trophy Achievements it would think like why are we doing this on the hardest, but u do get something out of it a Trophies.
But i dont like it want the Trophy add dlc and u have 2 do them 2 get the Platinum that is not right so i dont like it, i say if u down all of the Trophy Achievements for that game and u like it download the dlc and with Trophy dont make use do thing we dont want 2 do.
If Trophies over PSN meant or translated into something tangible, like credit towards a PSN game or even credit towards a DLC package I would be very angry, but since they don’t mean a damn thing I don’t really care if the come or go with DLC.
This is like putting too much emphasis in either using a black jacket or a brown one when the purpose is to protect yourself from the cold, the color is just irrelevant, same as the trophy system.
Cheer Axe heads!
But you can just look for his/her plat in a game and say “oh, he has a plat. so at one point he had 100%”
people can do what they want of course, but i agree that trophies etc are an artificial way of extending game play like someone said. personally i don’t give a hoot about them and never did when i had a 360.
if a game is good then i’ll go back to it regardless. if they expect me to play X ammount of hours in order to get X ammount of headshots then they’re daft. why not just make a game that has a replay factor? oh, i forgot, that would take some effort and investment.
like raisin’s said, if they were worth anything tangible then it’d be great, but they’re worth fuck all and if all you wanna do is show of to your mates that you’ve done 100%, then you kinda deserve it.
i remember when i was the first kid in school to complete Goldeneye on super-hardass mode. when i told people, they believed me. probably because nobody would believe that anyone would be sad enough to lie about something like that. i believe this still to be true.
Seriously? this makes you feel emasculated? christ’s sake dude.
Thing is that PSN has another flaw related with Trophies, and that is the insane amount of time that the system takes to synchronize someone’s trophy collection. Personally, I don’t even bother with my own friends! haha!
Cheers axe heads!
Agree.
Something that is even worst are the Online Trophys. Example: If you don’t by a game at DAY 1 and start hunting down the Online trophys.. You will most likley be screwed in the end of the year.
I bought the remake of the Xbox Version of Riddick. And it has around 18 online trophies. Remember, this game is 1.5 years old and NO ONE IS PLAYING ONLINE.
I managed to battle 4 dudes on a DeathMatch, but this games has a “10.000 kills” trophy, which basicly means that I will never get the Platinum Trophy.. i just wish I could delete the whole game from my trophy list.
Even if Im not inte Trophy hunitng, I would love to complete all 100% of the game in the future. But who will play this game in 5 years?
I hate online trophies. There is no skills, only luck to face other players online
It was, of course, an over exaggerated remark, meant to be witty, if you however fail to awknoledge it as such that’s your prerogative…
As stated in my post I am no trophy whore and only find it a meaningful system to extend the lifetime of games I already thoroughly enjoyed.
@Hereder
Excellent point, EA just recently it would be shutting down the online servers for LOTR: Conquest. (for people who don’t know they’re are online trophies for this game”)
It’s a shame if you recently found this in the bargain bin (lord knows it should be there) and you wanted to plat it.
…………..Someone should make this a battle cry.
I’m not that much into trophies but I agree that the DLC trophies should be listed seperately to the main game.
I’ve never got platinum but I can imagine it would be pretty annoying to see your 100% drop to 60% just because a DLC pack you haven’t downloaded has been released.
The fact that your percentage gets knocked down a bit from 100% with DLC really shouldn’t bug you. After all it doesn’t discredit all the trophies/ achievments you got before that right?
As for a lot of people hating on trophies I don’t really understand. To say it is an artificial way of extending gameplay…I mean games did that before trophies and the like. Take Resident Evil 2 for example I bet people ran that repeatedly for a better rank. Why? because they wanted the game to tell them that they ruined it’s shit. (I think you got a rocket launcher or something as well but if you already whupped the game on hardest setting it’s not like you need it)
Gamers are competitive, part of the reason of playing a game is usually to overcome a challenge and if a trophy is a visual representation of your success of this then all the better. The same goes for sports, when a country wins the world cup they get a trophy. I’m not saying that beating Deadspace on impossible with only the starting weapon is on the same plateau as winning the world cup but hell it’s something to whoever did it.
Still I have to agree that there are some ridiculous trophies out there that are neither fun nor fulfilling to obtain. i.e. any achievments on Fable II.
You know what pisses me off even more guys? Super Stardust HD!!
I downloaded the demo, i was like: fun but not worth buying and guess what, i have the trophy list of that game in on my PSN account even after deleting the demo. WTF man?! Its the only game i have 0 trophies and it just looks ugly there. Do developers have right to do this? And why cant we just delete trophies or trophy lists we dont want to have?
Agree with NoFunAtAll. it is really annoying to have spent a lot of hours on a game to get all the achievemnts/trophys just to be sent back when dlc gets released. i experienced the same thing when playing RE5(on 360), 1000G 50/50 achievements, then bam 200G that i would never get cuz i didn’t want to pay for versus..sucks, but as Jay_Slim said: “I think the idea of separating them is nice, but I don’t think devs are going to waste that much time addressing a minor gripe like this”..i hope you’re wrong though!
