Here on EpicBattleAxe.com our goal is to empower and inform you, the gamers of the world, while providing a platform for you to speak your mind. Last week, we leaned on one another to explore our experiences with the most disappointing games of all-time. It was a rather entertaining trip down memory lane that included plenty of stops for all of the bitchin’. Well, this week we’re exploring the opposite spectrum…Instead of looking back at what failed us, we’re looking forward to what we think will please us. Sure, there are games you can pretty much guarantee will deliver, but then there are those titles that are full of POTENTIAL, but might not give us complete confidence that they’ll be what we think they SHOULD be until we get them in our hands.
So, with that in mind, we’re asking everyone here to chime in and discuss the games that you think WILL live up to the hype…Games you’ve had on your radar for a while…The ones that you HOPE we will be talking about for years after they ship. So, our Member BattleCry topic this week is:
WHICH POTENTIAL PACKED GAME(S) ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO THE MOST?
It doesn’t matter which console, which genre, etc…Just make sure it hasn’t shipped yet anywhere in the world and feel free to sound off. I know there are NUMEROUS titles that fall into this category for me, but I’m opening the floor to you in order to get your feedback. As always, we’ll be featuring a new Member BattleCry each day here on EpicBattleAxe.com and then highlighting the MBC of the week on the next skirmish of the EpicBattleCry video podcast.
Alright gang, let’s here what you have to say! There are a lot of potential-packed games out there…If you could only play one, which would it be?!?!?!?
Cheers,
DK

Hey fellow axe people,
If I look at the poll I would have to say Im really looking forward to Red Dead Redemption.
The reason for that is the fact that the trailers they released for it in GT where really awesome and give the sense off something to remember.
That and the fact that its just cool to play in de setting of lets say: A Fist full of Dollars and For a Few Dollars more. That’s just cool.
Off the poll tho. Besides for God of War III that’s almost releasing there is one more game I am really excited about and I hope it will see the light this year is Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. The potential that game has with current tech, set piece experience and the voice cast it has now is just really awesome.
So that about sums it up for me regarding the announced games to date. Of course I hope there will be sudden announcements and releases to look forward to as well.
For now regards my fellow game enthusiasts.
Well my battlecry goes out to an RPG that’s not FFXIII (shocker). It’s the upcoming game from Monolith Soft called Xenoblade. I’m really excited because it’s coming from the makers of Xenosaga (which if you haven’t played it you’re REALLY missing out), the concept (I’m not gonna explain it so check it out on IGN) looks really epic and it’s coming out on the Wii, where RPGs, especially good ones are very few. They got the developers legacy behind them so I hope it does really well.
I am a firm believer in Star Wars: The Old Republic.
I know it doesn’t come out until next year but it’s my most anticipated game period. The reason why I’m so exctied is because Bioware is making it.
I also like the idea of an MMO with a story, I played WoW on and off for a year just because of my friends but the only times I really enjoyed it was when I was playing with my friends. The old republic seems like it’s going to let you be able to pretty much level up by urself because of your companions, but u will have an option to bring other people along with you.
I also think that because of every class haveing both personal class quests and open quest for everyone it’s gonna be fun to level up multiple characters. And of course the big thing or me is that it’s the Mass Effect dialouge and VO.
I wanna give a shoutout to http://darthhater.com/
It’s a really cool site that has a focus on The old Republic. Beside writting about the game they have a weekly podcast where they talk about every info they get.
My Battle cry goes out to, crap i dont know what to chose!!!!! Im so pumped about several games, that i cant chose right here right now! :S Let me at least give the couple im pumped about away, then maybe on the end of the rant ill be able to see which im more exicted about. Diablo 3, Star Wars the Old Republic and Batman Arkham Asylum 2. BAA 2 because, well part 1 was THE best Superherogame of this console generation, and maybe even the best superherogame ever. That gives high hopes and expectations for the sequel.
Im also excited for Diablo 3, cause of the gameplay and hours, and hours and hours I have spend in the Diablo 2. Mephisto runs, Baal runs etc, etc. looting, looting, and looting some more. The story was great, the characters were fun. the visuals cool and grimm, and a great multiplayer component. This third one looks as it has more like it, but better graphics, more characters and a great new story.
Thirdly SWTOR might the very first MMO that id really want to play. NPC’s that actually speak, a storyline that you can actually play (while i always have the feeling with WoW that you dont play a story, sorry if im kicking against a couple of kneecaps, but thats how i felt with WOW, contuining…), actions in a world that effect your surroundings, good looking graphics, a successor too one of the GREATEST RPG’s ever, Bioware at the helm (so that will give quality) and well all and all good bloody fun. Ooh and an amazing looking trailer offcourse hahaha!!
Concluding, I just cant choose haha :p I think these 3 are my most anticipated games. Sorry that i just couldnt define it at just one game.
Later dudes
My battlecry goes to Fallout New vegas. Fallout 3 was good, but the writing was not. With the return of the creators of the first two games for the franchise we will hopefully get a very satisfying story this time round. What I believe has the most potential is the introduction of factions and a reputation system, this should bring a lot of variation to the game. Perhaps our choices will really matter, given that we will be able to seriously piss off a faction and not see any if the content they have to offer as allies. The inclusion of the survival mode is an awesome idea. The wasteland will be more dangerous and realistic than ever as we will have to keep on top of water and food, on top of radiation. All this paired with the awesome exploration elements and artwork of fallout 3 gives New Vegas a lot of potential.
while I am exited for a few games I would have to say that the one that I am looking foward to the most as far as sheer potential goes is none other than Nintendo shocking anouncment last from last years E3, Metroid: Other M
Of course the Metroid series is awsome, and delving into samus’s past will most likley be an adventure to remeber, but what really has me interested in potential is the gameplay.
In case you havnt heard about it from the Media summit a few days ago, Most people are saying that the game will usually be controlled NES style with the sideways Wiimote, with an abilty to move along the Z-axis. If at anytime you move the wiimote facing the TV it will switch to a First Person Mode a-la-Prime. Samus supposedly wont be able to move but she can shoot all around her and use some specific abilties that are only available in this mode (apperently missles is one of them) This makes me all the more curios how shooting will work in the third person mode since we have infact seen a bit of gameplay where samus is not shooting strait forward.
I cant help but wonder about the potential in this becuase when i think about it sounds almost a bit (for lack of a better term)strange(maybe that word I’m looking for is innovative, lol)depending on how it is implemented. But there isnt any game that comes to mind that has ever done this, so I am definatly going to try it.
All this combined with team ninja’s resume and nintendo’s believe in great gameplay coming first makes me extremly curios how good/great this game could possibly be. After all It has alot to live up too after Metriod Prime and even the classic games.
It’s a tough choice with so many potentially great games coming out this year, but my battle cry goes out to Castlevania Lords of Shadow.
After I saw the trailer for it I was speechless, sure, it looks like it was highly influenced by God of War, but I think it will be unique enough in it’s style that we don’t have to fight about it the way people did with Dante’s Inferno. On top of that, I’ve been a Castlevania fan since I was in kindergarten over 15 years ago and this could very well be the first truly good 3D Castlevania.
After accepting the fact that those games simply don’t work in 3D I was very content playing the 2D games that have been around for some time now but I really think this could finally be the way to make a 3D Castlevania work. I hope I’m not disappointed, let this be the Mario 64 that this franchise longed for for so many years now.
My battle cry goes out to the potential of Diablo 3.
Every since Diablo 2 there has been all kinds of rumors
floating about this game coming out and there have even been those “screenshots” that showed it being worked on back in the day. But now that we know that it is officially being made is great. The following this game had back in the day before the rise of MMO’s,aka WOW, was huge. Now bringing that game to the advancements in graphics and coding in todays modern age video gaming could make this game become a MASSIVE HIT! not only is it a free “mmo” type of game but also it has a awesome story following everyones favorite villian, Satan lol.
The new character models look awesome and also the new look armor and weapons sets look even better.
The new attack system and talent system that is in work that is said to have not one specific “better” class spec such as in WOW or any other mmo that everyone just seems to copy. Also its rune system that will affect skills themselves to cause a spell to cause your character to cast a fireball that not only just shoots forward but might bounce and then explode or having a normal lighting spell not only strike one enemy but add a chain affect to it to cause massive damage to many persons.
Also we get to see the man by the name of DECKARD CAIN BABY! and his fantastic raps.

WHOOO RAH!
My Battle Cry goes out to (the previously mentioned) Castlevania: Lords of Shadow.
A common issue in the Castlevania fanbase, is that the 3D iterations don’t feel like a true successor to the 2D counterparts. They lack the mood, the faster paced gameplay, and dare I say..skill. (I still enjoyed the PS2 3D ones, btw.) Well, the newest edition to the series looks like it’s set to kick it up a notch or twenty.
When I saw the E3 trailer for Lords of Shadow last year, it sent chills down my spine. It has an all-star voice cast: Patrick Stewart, Robert Carlyle, Jason Isaacs, and Natasha McElhone. The score from the trailer has so much going for it. It has the dark gothic mood to it, with a hopeful melody breaking through. I hope the rest of the soundtrack is just as amazing. And the gameplay.. Not only does it look fluid and fast paced, but the camera just gets right into the action and makes it pack some punch.
Lords of Shadow could and should be the Castlevania that puts the series back in the game. It looks like they’re on the right track and we can only hope it delivers the goods.
There’s a lot of games I can’t wait to be released. Most of them are guarranteed blockbusters. I wanna focus on one which many or us are daring to hope will be great. That’s Alpha Protocol. It could just be the espionage game that we’ve all been waiting for. It’s action RPG is something that hasn’t quite been done before. It feels like an adventurous step into a genre which, for some reason or another, has never really been covered this way or even just covered enough. MGS and Splinter Cell were amazing but not RPG driven. Goldeneye was more of a shooter than anything else. Deus Ex combined many elements from many genres creating the near perfect spy game. All these games hit the nail on the head pretty much as hard as god hit haiti (too soon?). Why are there then so few spy genre games when many of them bust blocks on richter 10 scales. Even if Alpha Protocol comes off as a spy version of Mass Effect 2… cmon… who wouldnt want that?
That is unless it sucks.
Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck. Please don’t suck…
Everyone’s contributions are great, I’m very excited about each one of those titles already mentioned but personally I hold Studio 1 very close to my heart because of masterpieces of gaming like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus.
That’s why my vote goes to “The last Guardian”.
I’m not sure what does the story wants to accomplish but if it has the same level of immersion and artistic style as the other 2 masterpieces before mentioned I’ll be more than satisfied.
This game for me is part of the other 2, same as Shadow of the Colossus felt part of Ico, so in a certain way I consider these 3 games a Trilogy with dim strains that connect them in some way.
Anyway, that’s my Battlecry for this week, Axe heads!
Cheers!
Id’s Rage. What we’ve got here is an FPS/Racer/RPG in the most gorgeously crafted wasteland to date by the makers of the biggest games in gaming. It’s a given that the shooter elements will be great but add to that Motorstorm races with customizable vehicles and you’ve got yourself a post-apocalyptic junkie’s wet dream.
Just an addition to the excitement is the fact that it is a brand new IP from the makers of Doom and Quake, and it will be using a brand new amazing looking engine as well. What can possibly be more awesome?
My BattleCry goes to a game that we all know is coming, but won’t be here for a long time, Mass Effect 3. I know ME2 is only just come out, but come on, the first two chapters were great and I cannot wait to see how my actions in ME2 will affect ME3, seeing how masterfully they handled the transition from 1 to 2. Bioware does such a great job of creating some of the most intriguing universes in the gaming world, and to mention that your choices influence the next game instead of starting everyone from scratch and following a linear storyline to the next installment, Bioware rewrites the rules on sequels. I know this game is far off, but damn, we know its coming, the devs have released statements on the 2nd chapters impact the 3rd, reasons enough to receive a BattleCry.
My battle cry goes out to Star Craft 2 and the anger of not being chosen to par take in the beta which only fuels my rage!
Red Dead Redemption, easily my pick as the (surprise) game of the year.
You have a proven developer in Rockstar, easily the most successful and influential company in gaming the last decade. You have a setting that isn’t used nearly enough in gaming, and that’s the wild wild west. This is a match made in heaven. A game that will be referenced for years to come, in my opinion.
There are tons of great games coming out this year, but nothing will have the potential of being as epic as Rockstar’s next greatest venture.
I can’t even imagine what the DLC will be like…
My Battlecry goes out to a game millions of people have been waiting for for over 10 years, Starcraft II. Starcraft is quite possibly the best revered and longest running RTS of all time thus it is only fair to assume that the sequel be of epic porportions. I myself along with millions of other people were drawn into the starcraft universe and have been deeply involved in it for many years after we popped in the first game disc some 10 years ago. We have been waiting for years for this game to come out and knowing Blizzard we will be rewarded with a masterpiece. However, with so much hype and obligations that this game must live up too is it not entirely possibly that it will fall short of what we have been expecting and wanting for so many years. I do have hope as Blizzard has never let down befor, but there is a first time for everything.
Starcraft II is the game that if it meets our expectations and fulfills the hype it wo go down as one of the best sequels of all-time making it well worthy of the Most Look-forwarded Game.
My Battle Cry goes out to Alan Wake and Crackdown 2. One is coming in April, and the other should be coming in late summer, but I want them now. One is a story driven game with amazing graphics and lighting, the other is crazy and over the top with a comic book style. Both these games are gonna be sweet, so screw the haters. Even if sometimes those haters are you… THE MIGHTY AXE WIELDERS!!!
My Battle Cry goes out to God Of War III
I was never a big fan of the GoW series and I still ain’t but I gotta say that after whatching the “Chaos will Rise” trailer I got really pumped for it, and ofc GTTV made it even more awesome in my eyes. Then I stumbled upon a “God of war in 5 minutes” video on IGN. It just blew my mind. I never even knew there was so much story and epicness behind the games. Maybe my fault for not playing them much I guess.
So just by looking at these trailers/videos my anticipation for GoW III is huge and im so looking forward to it. Just look at what they showed on GTTV. The scale and epicness i just so utterly fantastic and it just takes a hold of you and leaves you wanting more!
Cry havoc and let your voice me heard!
My Battle Cry goes out to Fallout: New Vegas. Fallout 3 was awesome and gave the player a lot to do, even with the dlc Fallout 3 was an amazing experience. I just hope New VEgas can provide the same experience. Fallout 3 was my first time in the Fallout universe and I would love to go back. I hope Bethesda kept a good eye on Obsidian and New Vegas. I watch CSI a lot and have always wanted to visit vegas. Plus Midway’s This is Vegas will probably not be coming out, so New Vegas will be the closest experience I will have to visit Vegas(for now). The art style was nice and I can’t wait till gamers like me get to go back to the best apocalypse ever.
My battle cry goes out to Just Cause 2. I never played the original game, but i was a huge Mercenaries fan last gen. So when Mercs 2 was finally released a little part inside of me died. I wanted a game that was over the top, in your face action, but i got a poorly made third person shooter that could have passed as a poorly made mod of the first game.
When I first saw gameplay of Just Cause 2 the part of me that died with Mercs 2 was resurrected and began craving for some in your face action. Just Cause 2 looks like it will satisfy my lust and do much much more. You have a stunt parachute, a grappling hook, more weapons and vehicles then your heart desires and a huge island to let madness ensue on.
To me Just Cause 2 is a salute to what games used to be about, just pure fun. Who wants realism when you can attach an enemy to a gas canister, and launch him into the air? Who wants another modern warfare shooter when you can steal a plane, crash it into an enemy watch tower, parachute out at the last minute and blast baddies in the face with an SMG while you float to the ground?
My Battle Cry goes out to Nintendo
I really love the Mario/Zelda/Metroid/SSBros series, their video games still are at $50, some of you may say “Graphics are not all that impressive”, *cough* Tony, but people keep forgetting that a game should not be judged by its graphics, yeah they’re necessary but gameplay and story take the crown.
How many times have you heard of gamestop or best buy bonuses for preordering Nintendo games?
We all know that “The game industry” takes as much money as it can get from us (gamers), so What stops Nintendo from prizing their games at $55 or even $60?
Last but not least, DLC, its great in some cases (Mass Effect 2), the issue is that it really bothers me to wait, pay and sometimes keep my hopes high for bits of games I love. The day I buy Super Mario Galaxy 2 I’ll know I have the entire game, I’ll not be waiting for Yoshi DLC bullshit.
That is all and I hope you Axe Wielders share some of your points of view and answers to my questions. I love your show and keep up the good work.
Apologizing in advance for any mistakes I could have made. First comment ever, greetings
My first Battle Cry should go out to a game, precisely a sequel that I’ve been waiting faithfully and patiently for a really long time. Back in the day, the original version influenced my complete and utterly perception and acknowledgment of RTS games and gaming in general.First time I played it I became a genuine fanatic of the medium, and we have had our happily ever after moment since then I can’t complaint, I saw the potential the industry had of becoming a new platform for entertainment and enjoyment through that game. As it has been mentioned by others battlecryers I’m talking about Starcraft, and I’m anxiously waiting for the sequel, my personal choice.
I sincerely hope that the sequel won’t let anyone down, It must live up to the inexorably hype build up around it, surpassing the cultural reference and worshiped icon the original has become. Starcraft is the embodiment and epithet of an excellent game. The amalgam of various factors such as a nice dose of playability/replayability combined with an interest and attractive sci fi story like no other; the fun and fast paced gameplay nicely melted with an unique touch in the RTS genre;the incredible engaging and far reaching universe represented by the diverse mosaic of worlds, characters, vehicles, and war related paraphernalia created by the ingenious minds at blizzard; and the care, pride and support put behind their product along the years.
After contemplating my opinion of the product and the expectation I set on my mind, I can’t stop to wonder if it is to much. Is it fair to the franchise and the company who made it (don’t worry they’ll still make money) having a very high opinion and idealistic expectation about the product?. There are several reason why the original game has become that big of an impact in the industry, many of which has nothing to do with the quality or even the marketing and distribution of the game, Is it possible that one of the things that made the first game “what it is” was its novelty or its right timing?. Over the past few years some franchise have been very disappointing or have not live up to some established expectations, nevertheless most of them have been pretty good games but have suffered from the shadow cast by its predecessor (recently bioshock 2). So realizing the massive success of the starcraft formula, I star to doubt about the possibility of filling all of those expectations
It will always be an astonishing videogame for me, my first time… playing a RTS game, so I will play the sequel no matter what, and be happy for finally knowing what will happen to all the characters and what has become of their journey. Formula Abiding games are a very smart choice, and starcraft formula will never fail, just take good care of the story and I’ll be happy, I don’t mind getting back to the classic gameplay and “old fashioned” view in the RTS genre. Viva la vida y Starcraft.
Another battle cry goes out to brink, so far i’m liking what i’ve seen
My battle cry has to go to the underrepresented and seemingly under-the-radar; The Last Guardian, from the brilliant Team Ico. Last decade this developer managed to come from nowhere and put their only two games into most of best of the decade lists, even securing top spots on some lists. Few games have ever paralleled the emotional impact, character empathy or immersion of this studios previous games; and so far what we’ve seen of The Last Guardian has the recurring themes of Ico’s games pretty much in place. The engine itself looks set to deliver another lush visual experience to rival the emotion journey this game has the potential to take us on. While the teaser and its soundtrack suggest a slightly more light hearted and playful tone to the third game I’m sure that Fumito Ueda has a new game mechanic or story telling devise waiting round the corner to break our hearts like a fallen giant, a solo rowboat or a lamed horse and lost girl at sunrise did in the previous generation
Also the scarcity of traditional story telling devices, coupled with excellent game mechanics and a unique visual language has meant that these games made that tenuous step towards the old “games as an art form” debate getting credence in mainstream press, not bad going for a commercial developer making successful mass market games.
My hopes for this game go beyond the simple “I think it’ll be great, I can’t wait to play it.” The previous games represent something far more intangible; the risk of new IP and extremely creative, against the flow, games that somehow still succeed. ICO and SotC make it OK to stick to your artistic integrity and not simply follow the lead of the last multi-million selling franchise. As much as I’m hoping for a great game I’m hoping that tLG cements a reputation for maverik game design and can stand as a land mark to an indrustry that in reality in its 40′s should be thinking about making its Citizen Kane.
My battle cry goes out to a game that has not been announced yet, but everybody knows its coming. I have a feeling that Kingdom Hearts 3 is going to be the sickest square enix game ever made. It has potential just because of the amount of time being spent on it. 4 years passed between the release of Kingdom Hearts and its sequel. The time between the release of Kingdom Hearts 2 and the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 3 is now 4 years and counting. I just hope all this time is going to good use on Kingdom Hearts 3. It could be a great opportunity for the team behind Kingdom Hearts to reinvent the non-existent combat system (consisting of 1 melee button and some magic that didn’t do much) from the first 2. A great combat system on a game with as much charm, style and crazy story as Kingdom Hearts could be something great.
My battle cry goes out to the hope that this year will bring more adult content…I mean mature…god damn it, I mean stuff not for tweens, to the gaming world. I don’t just mean mature games like Heavy Rain and Alan Wake, I also mean mature entertainment in other media as well, specifically TV.
I’ve been gaming for almost 20 years now and up until this moment we’ve been creating our own content on the internet, from EBA to the Nerd to penny arcade to zeropunctuation, take your pick.
On TV (at least in the UK anyway) all we get is brief mentions or the odd kiddy show, and yet the average age of gamers and the amount of money we spend is well known.
We really need someone to legitimise us in the mainstream so we no longer have to hide our passion for gaming in front of our partners friends. Mention it at a dinner party and you might as well say you have down syndrome.
Alan Moore and Frank Miller did it for comics, who will do it for us?
(You might want to check out Charlie Brooker’s Gameswipe on BBC4 if you want to know more about what i mean and if you live outside the uk I’m very sorry…if only there was a way to share files with other people….)
My battle cry goes out to, “Mortal Kombat 9″. Not much information or any kind of trailers or screen shots of it yet, though co-creator of the series, Ed Boon, has said it is in the works and plans to come out most likely Q4 2010. As a huge Mortal Kombat fan, I’m sorry to say I felt like MK: Armageddon was just crap and in more than one way actually alienated the MK hardcore fanbase. Then MK vs DC was just things getting worst.
Anyways overall I don’t have high hopes about the actual gameplay of the game such as the fighting engine and its online capabilities. However I really hope they bring back and fix Mortal Kombat in the aspects that it was good and unique in. First off MK just isn’t MK unless you got Fatalities, and I feel we deserve some very well scripted and well presented and creative original fatalities. Bottom line it is gory eye candy and a trademark of the series, yet wasn’t done right in past couple games.
The other thing is the story and the characters. Couple of the main reasons why MK has had a big fanbase throughout the years, despite there being better fighting games on the market, is because of the story, the mythology, and all the characters in the MK universe. Of course with MKvsDC you just don’t have none of this… nothing “canon” at least and hell it was all lame any ways. MK: Armageddon just really messed with the “canon” version of the story just making a real mess really.
So yes MK9 gets my first member battle cry. It has high potential for having the return of Fatalities the way we really love them, and potential to fix, or come up with a whole new story with this game which is some thing the hardcore base wants and is what at the least needs to be done to draw some fanbase back that has been drivin away by MKA and MKvsDC.
As for its potential gameplay wise… Well I feel they have the potential for better online experience this time around. I believe Devs usually learn and get better so I’ll expect better. Though the fighting engine I fear will be similar to MKvsDC, which in my opinion was really broken in design and clunky.
Anyways we’ll see…
My battle cry goes out off topic to the game trade-in market.
While I myself do not buy second hand games I still participate in this sector by trading games in.
I think games companies are forgetting the fact that games are not cheap, in a heavy season such as this winter a gamer could easily spend £500 if they purchased everything they wanted and people just dont have the money for that. Instead people are trading in their games against new games, the money is going back into the industry.
Case in point: i bought Heavy Rain for £40; now when i take that back on Friday i can get £27 off the £30 PC copy of BFBC2. If that wasn’t the case then i would not have bought one of those games at all.
As much as it hurts the Publishers sense of greed the used game market does feed the industry and by taking away people ability to trade in games they would see a marked drop in overall sales.
my battlecry goes out to Deadliest Warrior the game based on the tv show. while watching the show i often wondered how cool it could be as a game and then Bam! they premiered it. i dont know how in depth they will go as far as gameplay but if they can incorporate multiplayer, cool maps you can use to your advantage to attack your enemy, all of the different weapons used by the different warriors and time travel. gamers could have a ball. imagine matches with your team of friends being ninjas against another teams samurai even one on one matches. i hope they explore that idea more. if they can pull it off right this game could be a classic but as a downloadable game i doubt they go as deep as they should
My battlecry goes out to one of my favorite game series, Prince of Persia. Seeing how the hype is starting to build up for the sequels already, I started thinking about how awesome the Sands of Time trilogy truly was. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the 2008 game, especially the unforgettable art style, but the Sands of time was a well thought out reboot for a respected franchise, that didn’t have any major design flaws. How often can we say the same about overhauls of venerable franchises? What I do find strange however is the fact, that the guys at Ubisoft apparently haven’t noticed the success God of War Collection has in the retail space. Why don’t they release a remastered Prince of Persia Collection? I believe it would only serve to add up to the hype the new game is getting, it would be undoubtedly profitable, and we would get a chance to get up to speed before the sequel comes out. Isn’t that an everybody wins scenario?
My battlecry goes out to a game which is currently a little under the radar i am talking about Mafia 2. I liked the first game very much and i am sure this game will kick ass. What i´ve seen so far gives me hope again that the Pc isn´t completly abandoned by game devs. (like by Remedy´s Alan Wake for example). Pc´s didn´t seen much love lately …
my battle cry goes out to game trading services such as goozex.com I have been a member with them for about 2 years now and they allow me to trade my used games and DVD movies for other games and movies based on a point system for trades, by having a system that matches their users based on supply and demand. all i have to pay is $1 to use their service and shipping if i have to ship a game off. sure there might be long waiting lines for newer games, but if i wanted a new game then I’d buy it from gamestop or walmart. services like goozex allows me to by pass the whole trading in for low value on a used game and paying an outrageous amount for a used game. what do you guys think of game trading services such as this.
With the release of Mass Effect 2, I became a sort of a BioWare junkie. I did love Dragon Age and the first Mass Effect, but Mass Effect 2 made me realise that I just need more. I recently played both of the KotOR games and I have to say that these games are extremely awesome, almost going in the realm of Awesometopia. My Battle Cry goes out to a game that certainly has the skills to top out one of the most popular (not best) MMO’s out there: WoW. I can’t stop thinking about the The Old Republic, and for the first time since the release of Twilight Princess I’m hyping a game more than the next Zelda game. Cheers.
Greetings my overlords of outrage, my… gah I’m not even going to try.
I’ll leave it to the *cough* professionals.
Anywyas, my battlecry goes out to Funcom and their upcoming new MMORPG “The Secret World”(Please do not suck!).
The reason I chose TSW for my “potential packed game” is quite simply, ambition.
Which Funcom has had plenty of in the past. Some times more sucessful than others.
The Secret World is a MMO outside the norm of the general MMO.
It promises a game that will be fun from moment one without all the grinding common in most MMOs.
In short, it is a modern day MMO without levels and classes based on all the ancient and some modern mythologies that exsist today.
And the reason I see huge potential in this game is because of the engagement Funcom has put into it.
They have created complex puzzles for the community to solve and as a reward they or shall I say we get new information about the game and it’s mechanics with the sense of contributing and a sense of accomplishment.
This not only shows that the developers are truly commited to the project, but also that they actually care that their community are kept engaged.
The project has been in the works for quite a while. And the community has been around since late 06/early 07 if memory serves.
Here is an example of the commitment they have made:
http://www.kingsmouth.com/ and a fictional blog http://monstersofmaine.blogspot.com/
Funcom created an entire website disguised as a smalltown travel guide if you will just to get us immersed in the story they are trying to tell.
Sorry for the wall of text, but MMOs are timevampires.
Only appropriate that my battlecry drained the time out of you aswell!
It has to be Red Dead Redemption, but saying that Alpha Protocol could be a serious hitter & bigger than Mass Effect 2 due mainly to it been based in the real world and not set in some corner of Space.
I for one am not a fan of science fiction Games or Movies along with Millions of other Gamers around the world, We like WW2 Games, MW2, Racing & Sports etc and Mass Effect 2 just did not hit our radar in the slightest.
Alpha Protocol could pick up Mass Effect 2 players and interest players enough like myself who like realistic situations and settings in a game.
So for that reason I give my vote to Alpha Protocol and Red Dead Redemption a close second.
My battlecry is about two things: 1. to let you guys know what i am looking forward to 2. to give a shoutout to indy developers that connects and care about their community aswell as their game.
I’m really looking forward to three big releases this year.they are all from the same company and they are all related to the same game.
I’m talking about Interstellar marines which is a sci-fi action shooter being developed by a company called zero point software.
now, The idea is to release free preview slices of the game while it’s being developed. the preview slices shows some key features about how the game is gonna play. for an example, they have released one preview slice called bullseye which is a practise shooting range. the point of this “minigame” is to show off the shooting mechanics in the game and to get people exited.
the next three preview slices this year will be:
1. Movement. which will show how the soldier will move around in the game. Maybe we will see some cover action and parkour-like movements.
2. Multiplayer. in this slice we will get to play some competitive multiplayer in all new game modes.
3. cooperative multiplayer. This will show what the game is ultimately about, you guessed it, COOP!
that’s what i’m excited about this year and best of all, it’s all indy baby!
the bullseye preview slice can be played here: http://www.interstellarmarines.com/game/bullseye/ – make sure you play it in firefox. now, go check it out!
Although there a lot of awesome games coming out this year, my battle cry goes out to Deus Ex 3 (now DE: Human Revolution) which will HOPEFULLY come out sometime this year.
Deus Ex is definitely one of the best, most compelling FPS/RPG games I have ever played. While it had some shortcomings, it had, and still has IMO, one of the most interesting and fleshed out storylines in its genre, and at the time I think set a benchmark for non-linear gameplay in FPS games, for a variety of reasons.
I’m looking forward to Deus Ex 3 because I think that if it is developed based on a standard meant to surpass the previous games, it could potentially become an experience that’s fun and interesting both at a skill level as well as an intellectual level.
My excitement for this game is also influenced by a bit of anxiety. This is because DE3 isn’t being developed by ION Storm, meaning that key designers from the first games like Warren Spector aren’t part of the dev process. Despite this I am hopeful that the people at Eidos will do the series justice and make what has the potential to become a fantastic game, regardless of the design changes they’re making.
If it doesn’t come out though then Batman: AA 2 will rock. ‘Cause it’s got Batman in it.
My Battle Cry is about one game and one game only: Gran Tu-fucking-Rismo 5!
Yes, it might have taken centuries to finish (and it still isn’t) but any car lover would ejaculate all over the screen looking at the specs for GT5: 950 cars, damage, night time racing, and the Top Gear track, bitches!
But honestly, a game has to be very very special to buy a big expensive peripheral for. GT5 is that game for me, I bought a Logitech steering wheel (100 euros, so effectively 7,693 US dollars) for it, I even went as far as buying an actual sport seat (from a Porsche 911 997 GT3 RS -car lover erecting-)
I don’t see Gran Turismo 5 as a competitor for Forza Motorsport 3. I don’t see it as a competitor for anything at all, actually. You feel like you are actually driving the car when you feel the steering wheel moving about, thanks to you going way too fast round the track. Neither Forza nor anything else can achieve this type of realism. So bring it on, Yamauchi! Just leave the damage out of it. And include Porsche god damn it!
My Battlecry doesn’t quite go out to a “potential packed game”. Instead it is more about a potential packed concept.
The other day I was watching Bear Grylls doing his thing on Discovery Channel in Man VS. Wild. And I couldn’t help myself but think that it would make great game-material.
You try to survive, making use of what you find in the world around you, instead of relying on hightech equipment. Instead of a waypoint marker showing you which way to go, you have to figure it out by observing your surroundings. Like this the world itself becomes a character.
This doesn’t necessarily has to be a new IP, I can imagine this concept being used in games such as Uncharted and Tombraider. Also Boiling Point (not a really good, but quite original game at the time) would be perfect to integrate a little Man VS. Wild/Survivorman gameplay.
Furthermore, I would like to Cry a second time in favor of fanbased movies. I love them and I know a lot of other people do too. Maybe it could become a new topic on Epic Battle Cry.
For starters, here’s my entry:

I made it together with 3 classmates for a stopmotionassignement for school.

My Battle Cry goes out to Final Fantasy XIV.
Final Fantasy XI was a solid game, but as time went on, it became really, really broken. Despite such a wonderful setting and the novelty of playing a Final Fantasy MMO, there just wasn’t enough reasons to play the game over better structured, proven MMOs.
I think XIV has the potential to be up there amongst the best. I just worry about the direction that SquareEnix are going in with the Final Fantasy series.
They can do this, but they need to learn from their mistakes. If they can’t do that, they’re going to achieve mediocre success like the former Final Fantasy MMO, and that would be a disappointment for me and many others.
My battlecry is to SWTOR, I have been seeing media for this game for ages now, the first screenshots and information started coming out about it quite some time ago. So far I have only been getting more and more hyped for it.
Safe to say I have high expectations for the game. One of the reasons why I chose this specific title and not other great ones like Starcraft 2 and stuff, is because SWTOR is promising to bring a bunch of new features that we have never seen before in any other mmo. One of such that really has me hyped and that I feel if anyone can do it, BioWare can! Is the very story driven gameplay that really puts you into a slightly unique experience that you have control over.
One of the only other mmos which is story driven and has a lot of story in it is Guild Wars. For the rest few other mmos even come close to the amount of story and putting you into the shoes of your characters so you really get a sense of a real story and immersion.
So yeah, SWTOR due to it being developed by BioWare should be able to be the first mmo to actually redefine the way we see mmo games and if they pull it off will show the industry that mmo games can be a lot more than just a massive multiplayer sandbox experience of grinding and questing without any much influence on the environment and the game world.
My Battlecry goes to Brent for ripping off my battlecry about Used Games and how developers and publishers are screwing the consumer by releasing content that can only be accessed by buying a new copy, on this week show ( My battlecry was the put on the Most immersive game topic, the one with the Bioshock picture).
He went on to even used the same examples that I gave ( the auto industry) and did NOT even mention my name or give me credit.
Lame. Thanks Brent.
I still love you guys and forgive you.
my battelcry goes out to EBC and all of the users that “have an issue” with gamestop. this weeks episode got me extremely fired up at gamestop, because it made me truly see how people get ripped off. maybe i didnt see it for all it was before… my judgement may have been clouded by beer..
it took me back to the day that i bought a brand new game for $60 for my 360 on a cold night last winter. i played said game for about 2 hours, and went to bed, because honestly i didnt like it at all. it was full of glitches and made my 360 freeze up (no it wasn’t rrod or the normal freezing). i took it back to gamestop with everything in hand to try to return it the VERY NEXT MORNING, and they told me they will only give me a $22 store credit! now keep in mind i had only bought it about 12-14 hours before hand.. i looked at the wall directly to the right of me and there it was… a used copy selling for $55. WTF?!?!
since then, i had started buying games used from gamestop, ONLY BECAUSE they have a 7 day full cash back return window. how is it fair that i can buy a game NEW, and only get $22 back for it within 24 hours, but i can buy a game USED for $5 less than the original price, and get a full cash back return?
this part actually saddens me, because i KNOW this hurts the developers due to them not seeing any of the used game profit. hell, if i had a ton of money that i could blow on buying new games all of the time, i would, but i dont! i wish i had other options of buying games locally, but i am surrounded by 5 gamestops.
Out of the games listed on the poll, my BattleCry has to go out to Alpha Protocol.
Not only is it being designed by the man behind some of my favorite games (Fallout 2, Planescape: Torment), but it’s being billed as, as you guys mentioned, Mass Effect in a modern-day espionage setting. So.. Mass Effect: Bourne Edition, I guess? Not a bad thing, I think.
On top of that, the writing’s sure to be great. Obsidian’s already proved their worth in this department with great titles like KotOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, and its vastly under-appreciated expansion, Mask of the Betrayer.
The only thing worrying me is how the game itself is going to play. Obsidian’s games are infamous for their bug-laden launches (I had some pretty bad experiences with KotOR 2, myself), but hopefully this issue is rectified by the delays this game has seen. Oh, and some of the (admittedly old) game play videos I’ve seen haven’t seemed particularly original or outright awesome, but hey, I loved ME2, so the shooting mechanics shouldn’t be a big deal.
Here’s hoping it delivers.
This is my first BattleCry so I feel I have to say this… You guys are all awesome, but seriously: DK TALKS TOO MUCH/FAST. I wonder if anyone ever reads this far down… >_>
My battlecry goes out to Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. Out of all the games being developed outside of Konami, I think this holds the greatest promise. Especially now that it has that Kojima budget, I think it could become more polished and better than “average”, growing into a bigger fanbase than its current “underground” status.
Some people are being a bit skeptical, already claiming it to copy God of War, but considering the fact that Kratos uses his swords more like a whip than anything else, the combat was bound to look a bit similar. I think Lords of shadow will offer a unique feel and experience of its own, as long as it stays true to its dark and gothic tone. I’d say its a copy once they add the nudity and over the top “rip-em-in-half” gameplay.
I’ve always been a fan of the series, and I thought Lament of Innocence was a great game, despite its flaws. It was a step up compared to previous 3D titles. But than Cirlce of Darkness came out and ruined everything LOI tried to accomplished. The fighting mechanics were dumbed down and the graphics weren’t as good. Let’s also not forget the 1st “next-gen” castlevania trailer which showcased Alucard in not so next-gen graphics. I’m glad to see LOS turn out much better.
[...] cool possibilities. We’ve already seen a trove of great ideas submitted by the community in this week’s topic starter post, so head there and be sure to let your voice be heard if you’ve got a particular game that [...]
My Battle Cry goes out to Starcraft 2, but not necessarily the game itself, but rather the editor. Blizzard showed off not too long ago some of the capabilities of the editor, such as a third person shooter or a vertical scrolling shooter. The potential coming from the editor just seems phenomenal because blizzard is giving anyone a chance to make their own games even if they don’t really know how to make an actual stand a lone game.
Not only that this can help make Starcraft 2 even more than just a good game, but almost a promotional recruitment tool. If people make these very creative games with the editor and perhaps become “famous” within the Starcraft 2 community then that could lead to those people either getting picked up by companies, like blizzard, or getting those people to join team and form their own companies.
We already saw how that can happen with Warcraft 3 because from that game two new developers were created (both made identical games, but oh well). So this has a huge potential not only to be a great game and editor, but to also bring more people possibly into the gaming industry as developers rather than just gamers.
My battle cry goes out to RAGE. This is the new FPS/racer by id. Personally it seemes that this game is gonna be exactly what everyone wants. It’s gonna be a FPS but not totally linear, with side missions to be done and large environments to be explored. On top of that there’s gonna be an arcade style racing mechanic
SWEEEEEEEEEEET
And from the time it’s taking it is gonna be a perfect balance of all these things.
PS: GOW3 is gonna be epic!
My second battle cry goes out to Far Cry 3 a game which is gonna be out 2012 if that…
This is another Battlecry in regards to game pricing, etc. After the recent Bonus Round with Jason Rubin and the “housecleaning” at Activision-Blizzard, this quote from Act-Blizz worries me the most:
“…This will include a focus on high-margin digital online content…with new digital business models.”
Hmm…no middle-man, no physical media you can trade in or sell…otherwise known as, you’re not buying a game; it’s a really expensive rental.
/facepalm
Has to be The Last Guardian.
i’m so fucking sick of the games (GOW3 is an exception but ther are no guns) we get where it’s a hyper macho twat with a FBG and a random bag of generic one liners that we seem to be wading waist deep in these days. serioulsy, it’s like crappy action movies from the 80s with either Arnie, Stalone, Segal or some other douche-bag. i’ll admitt there are some gems out there but the market is saturated with these kindsa titles and it bores the wicked tits off me.
it’s part of the reason i enjoyed Heavy Rain, despite it’s short comings, because it’s different to the mainstream and at the very least is unique.
that’s what i am expecting from TLG, some fucking originality and a development team who aren’t coerced in to making the most profitable title they can by publishers.
having said all that, i’m expecting Halo: Reach-around to be awesome too, i know it’s early days but it looks sweet. although i’m not a 360 owner
My battle cry goes out to a game I think everyone can agree will be effing awesome, Starcraft 2.
It’s been ten years and i can honestly say its about time. While I have not received a Beta key I have watched some beta gameplay over at Giantbomb and can say it only made me more excited (something I thought was impossible). I must admit I’m one of the people who tried Warcraft III and World of Warcraft and was pretty much turned off from Blizzard thinking they would pretty much refuse to make games from other IP’s. Then out of nowhere they announced both Diablo III and Starcraft 2. Not only that, but blizzard isn’t bent on changing them to fit the Warcraft mold at all. After seeing gameplay for Starcraft I can say it looks familiar enough that I feel like I’d be comfortable diving right in to the campaign. On the other hand the game does not look like Starcraft 3D. Enough is different that the game will have its own differences from the first game that only the insane will be upset with the game. Honesty I don’t think I need to describe to anyone how awesome this game will be. That being said I hope the next two installments of the game will also be expantions on top of being the other races’ campaigns or else this will have to fall under last week’s battle cry. Until then I’ll see you on the other side of a zerg rush.
With a lot of new and intavating games coming out this year it could be hard to choose, but I’d say that my most looked forward to and ebc goes to 3D Dot Game Heros. Now what caught my attention first was the looks of the game. With retro 8-bit grafics but then everything made 3D, it ws one of those “Why didn’t I think about that?” moments. I think it’s a rather awesome idea. Also being a die-hard Zelda fan, the gameplay looks really good. I enjoyed the old classics (even though I’m only 17
) and this game seems to have a simalar feel to it. And of course one of the biggest feature (pun intended) is the giant sword that you get. I mean who doesn’t like a giant sword? Ok so a gaint axe would be awesome too, but still…
The game I’m really looking forward to ( and since David Jaffe told “soon bitch soon” ) is Twisted Metal. It’s been a while since we saw last Twisted Metal game, it’s interesting to see what are they going to offer with new one. The thing I’m intereseted the most is Online component, I think it will be something we’ve never seen before.
My Battle Cry goes out to Metro 2033
I’m not really have a hug-ass hype for this game but
this game is trying to do something new and I’m looking forward to it because not like FPSs here today which are mostly about war and shooting terrorists Metro 2033 brings something fresh to table.
Metro 2033 is mostly about survival, using military made bullets for currency, checking your surroundings for loot, putting gas masks on for air and checking how much oxygen you have, having an interesting mechanic for creating/modifying weapons, checking your flashlights battery(you can use a lamp but you need oil and you need to put it down if you’re gunna fight) and finding more bullets(and you can only stay outside of the sewers/tunnels and step outside for only 15 mins)
I know it looks/sounds challenging but it may actually work out and create a new “breed” of FPSs and might open a door for unique FPSs like this one
My battle cry comes from what happend to the ps3 this week.
It really got me thinking about, do we really own anything even if we own the physical copy?
If the online and multiplayer doesn’t work it’s understandable, but I don’t like the idea that
I might not one day be able play the singleplayer one day.
Let’s face it there will come one day where the servers for the ps3 and 360 will end. We just saw that recently with the original xbox and xbox live. But you will still be able to play games offline, and some people will probably find a way to play Halo 2 multiplayer online with their pc if they really want to.
One day we will move to only digital media, but what happends one day if their servers are down? Or you have problems with your internet connection? Will you still be able to play the singleplayer? These questions need to be answered before we make a totalt change in the gaming industry.
My Battle cry goes to the Halo: Reach leaked footage I just saw. If you haven’t seen it, check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udhQ9KkoQ3I
Now it may be fake, but if it is, well the person who made it deserves a F-ing medal for it.
The footage looks very good, especially graphics wise.
It’s unlikely that Halo: Reach will be a revolutionary game, but it will probably be a bad ass game that should be on everyone’s radar.
Greetings from germany EBA!
My battle cry goes out to microsoft:
(Btw this concerns ‘ALL’ Xbox Live-users!)
“SCREEEEW YOU!”
Here’s my story:
About five months ago my Xbox gametag went ‘invalid’ from one day to another!
It didn’t made any sense to me bacause I bought a new gold membership 2 days before that day. I got the answer to that event on major Nelson’s blog (link below). As I made my Xbox Live account for my console two years ago I also created an account on windows Live – I didn’t know that!
But as a matter of fact Xbox Live is a sub-feature of windows Live therefor
ALL Xbox consoles DO HAVE a windows live account and if gamers fail to log-in into winlive.com or the Live messenger at least ONCE WITHIN TWO years, the Xbox Live account gets DELETED automaticly!
According to major nelson it is technically IMPOSSIBLE to restore an deleted
gamertag because it RELIES on a valid windows Live ID!
http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/02/19/windows-live-id-s-and-gamertags.aspx
So here I am:
My gamertag is locked inside my console unable to connect because of an
INVALID windows Live ID!
My achievements GONE!
My savegame data worthless!
My bank account data LOCKED in my invalid gamertag – and microsoft still
CONTINUES to charge me for the Live service because I CAN’T DELETE my payment
settings without connecting my gamertag with Xbox Live!!!
I gave micro-SUCK the benefit of a doubt by waiting a few months and playing
with a new gamertag from scrom scratch but now I can’t help but see myself
as butt-r@ped!
By now I buy all multi-plattform titles for my PS3 and going to use my Xbox360
ONLY for exclusive games like HALO or GEARS OF WAR!
In fact, if it wasn’t for those titles i’d probably smashed my Xbox with a
sledgehammer already!
So… microSUCK:
I’d like to quote Brent Adams (skirmish 039) here:
-quote-
Hey microSUCK… guess wich finger I’m holding up!
You punk-a$$ motherf#ckers – You cheap-a$$ b1tches!
-quote end-
I hope you die and burn in hell for all eterity!
That’s my battle cry!
I’m really looking forward to The Force Unleashed 2. I know the first game had issues, but LucasArts really believes in this franchise and I think the sequel will be an improvement over this first game. How big of an improvement, I don’t know.
I’m hoping the story takes place not long after the destruction of the first death star. The franchise seems to want to explore dark times in the galaxy that haven’t been in the movies, and that few-year period stands out to me. The empire is shocked by the rebel victory at yavin 4, but also very pissed off and ready to crack down on all uprisings. In the middle of all this, maybe the apprentice was secretly kept alive by the emporer for some reason and somehow escapes in the beginning of the game.
Anyway, I see a lot of potential packed into this game and I hope it delivers.
My battle cry goes out to Halo Reach. I chose this over many other great games like God of War 3 and Super Mario Galaxy 2 because since this is confirmed to be the last Halo game made by Bungie this means that the Dev can finally move on to something new. This is a great opportunity for Bungie to branch out of the FPS genre and to really show their stuff.
Also Bungie will set an example to other studios on how to start a new I.P and in turn encourage new imaginative development in the gaming industry.
My battle cry goes out to nVidia’s Mini-Doc on Just Cause 2.
This is a video on PC specific features of JC2. I don’t like where this is going. Fancy effects mean inhumanely high system requirements. I would rather like if devs would optimise there games to run on medium or even office grade machines. Sure the graphics would be lower than on consoles but more people could (not necessarily would) buy the game and not only the elitist with rigs of the price of human souls. On the flip side Just Cause 1 had relatively low Sys. Reqs. hope this will have to. Also I want to clarify that I’m not bashing Eidos/Square Enix and Avalanche Studios but rather nVidia and AMD-Ati. Gameplay is more important than to-of-the-range graphics, and JC2 has sick gameplay :9
My battlecry goes out to Independent Game Developers. Popular games such as Braid and Castle Crashers have come from independent game developers. Indie developers let their imaginations run wild. They try to make truly original games with innovative ideas in order to stand out from the rest of the pack. When given the chance, indie game developers have the POTENTIAL to creat a truly remarkable gaming experience. For example, Portal, which was part of The Orange Box, came from a developer that was recognized at the Independent Games Festival. Portal went on to become on the best games of 2007. In today’s sequal ridden game market, Independent Game Developers have the chance to inject fresh ideas into video games if they are given the resources, time, manpower, and opportunity. There’s a lot of untapped POTENTIAL in independent game developers.
My battle cry goes to Metal gear solid: Peace walker.
After the dissapointment that portable ops was, at last there will be an actually good metal gear game available for a handheld console.
Great graphics, great story(although heavy as always)and better gameplay, peace walker will be a game that will surely raise the sales of PSP. How can I say something like that without doubt? I will buy a PSP just because of this game, thats why.
[...] great. Recommendations are coming in fast and furious (better phrase than a movie) so head over to this week’s topic-starter post and share your pick.Today’s MBC goes out to a powerhouse franchise that’s going to be [...]
My battle cry goes out to EA and their “Project 10 dollar”. Brent had a fair point about gamers having the right to sell their own property, but the main issue isn’t that gamers can sell their games, but that they can trade them in, on a vast scale.
With all the studios closing down lately, including Pandemic at EA, developers are obviously struggling to turn a profit. You can’t begrudge developers, and artists wanting to make money off their own work, and operation 10 dollar may help them by discouraging people from second hand sales, without affecting people who go out and buy the game new.
You still own the game, and can still sell 95% of it, but at least Dice can make some profit from the second hand market, rather than losing out on another sale, while gamestop continues to profit on a huge commercial scale, probably taking just as much money from would be sales, as piracy… It won’t affect people who buy the game new, and it might help prevent more studios from closing down, and for that, I’m willing to support it.
I don’t have any consoles but Skirmish 65 made me want to cry. When I did have consoles I just owned Nintendo ones and never played online. As of late online components have become very prominent in console games. Now on the PC gaming front it’s a very common price point for online only FPS games to be priced at $20 like Team Fortress 2, Killing Floor, and Shattered Horizon just to name a few. Now I could see this happening with the online portion of console games. Buy Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 5 and enter a code to link online play to your account or if you buy it used you can only play singleplayer and splitscreen and you have to pay $20-$30 for the online mode.
As of writing this post Steam reports that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 single player has 4,832 people playing and 49,390 people playing multiplayer. Needless to say I don’t think it’s too much to ask for people to activate online or be online for the online portion of a game.
Hey Guys!
My battle cry goes out to Red Steel 2. I have been waiting for this game for over a year and it has so much good stuff already going for it. This game will finally fulfill the promise of motion controlled swordfightng that has been dormant for about 4 or 5 years. From the awesome footage we have seen so far, to the creative director Jason Vandenburghe and his teams unprecedented feedback to the fans, this game is fully set to deliver the goods. This will be the turning point for third party games on the Wii, and I can only see good stuff coming in the future for the Wii because of this game. Go buy the game people! I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
My Battle Cry for most anticipated game does not go out to a game specifically but to all those great games that are currently in development by the creative minds in the gaming industry. This could be a sequel to an already great game that has done the hard work of creating a new IP and now comes back with an even greater second outing. Or the unknown developer that has faith in the project they are working on and the premise behind it. Without these creative minds taking our gaming experience to new places we are doomed to be the consumers of re-hashed and under-produced products, spearheaded by people sitting in high rise buildings who know nothing of how the creative mind works.
Keep up the great work guys, everyone appreciates the work you do.
I wanted to give a battle cry to cheapassgamers.com. Lets face it, gaming is an expensive habit, and with todays market, every penny counts. Thanks to cheapassgamer, I was able to pick up Dantes Inferno and Bad Company 2 this week for a combined price of 60$. They have also recently added price tracking, so you can set the value you want to pay for a game, and they will email you when any outlet hits that price amount. Furthermore, they track in the trade in value of games at all different sites. Honestly, that site saved me over 500$ last year in buying games. They deserve a shout out, the site is free, and an invaluable resource to the hardcore gaming community.
My battle cry goes out the “powers that be” who are turning the Uncharted series into a movie. Not a very good idea..I played the first Uncharted and recently got to play through the second one and HELLO!! Uncharted is already a cinematic experience in it’s present medium. Why take an awesome game which plays as Hollywood blockbuster movie and turn it into a movie?? The developers on the Uncharted series already said that they took ideas from Indiana Jones, National Treasure etc. So why take a game based off of several good films and turn it back into a movie!? I could go on..but basically some games don’t need to Hollywood movie treatment because they already deliver a cinematic experience all there own. But of course it’s all about the money..smh.
my battlecry goes to the 20th anniversary of Neo Geo
well since it is their anniversary they should release some neo geo games out on the xbox live arcade or the psn.one that im really hoping theyll release is the alien vs predator game that was freakin awesome and they should make it online co op or something.
My Battle Cry goes out to Portal 2 and Valve!
Yeah thats right. As of a few hours ago Portal, the acclaimed puzzle game from Valve, updated it self and the details only had the following cryptic info “Changed radio transmission frequency to comply with federal and state spectrum management regulations” and a new mysterious achievement.
This started a crazy hunt for clues in-game by the Steam community and in the end, after digging through some of the updated files, running the stuff found through steganography programs that produced some 26 pictures that had numbers on them, running those numbers through a md5 hash translator and coming up with a landline number that was a Bulletin Board System (BBS) and using telnet to connect to it to get a number of ASCII art depicting what looks like scenes from a Portal game plus robots that have never been seen before and others that are to hard to make out what they are.
Oh yeah and Portal now has a new ending where you are dragged away, presumably by a robot that says “Thank you for assuming the party escort submission position”!
So my Battlecry goes out to Portal 2 that seems to be on its way if this new info is any indication, and I also dedicate it partly to Valve for the best Viral marketing I have ever witnessed!
This stunt had me up all night playing Portal, trying to figure it all out while trying to keep up with the brilliant minds in the Steam community that put it all together in the end.
I’d wish more game companies would do the same.
I am looking forward towards any innovative and refreshing video game concepts.
Therefore my Member Battle Cry goes to:
“The asinine top management of publisher like Activision – and the ‘former’ EA, but they are moving along in a better direction now – that have totally fucked up the way investors and stockholders look at our beloved industry and therefore now are all myopic on innovation and creative talent”
Because of publishers like Activision, investors and the stock market expect all game companies to perform like Activision by having just one great cash cow of a MMO and by further only milking out shooters, music and sports games on a yearly basis and thereby fucking up the long term appeal of their own intellectual properties… And, because of them we’re also seeing less and less of great innovative titles from Japanese publishers… and you know why?.. Because those companies mainly have the same stockholders!
I just hope Indy developers and small new innovative studios can balance it all out, but probably they’ll just get swallowed up by goliaths like Activision. So Fuck You Activision! Besides MW2 isn’t as great a game as the first one was!
Hello fellow axes. My member battlecry goes out to Alpha Protocol and the team of Obsidian. Although there are several games I’m looking forward to(FFXIII and Yakuza 3 for example), I’m always interested in the work of the guys, who emerged from the debris of Black Isle. Previously they worked on the sequels of Bioware games like Kotor and Neverwinter Nights. And in my opinion they managed to improve both games (althogh they had to finish Kotor 2 in a rush), so I have high hopes about their new, original game. The modern day spy RPG theme is a great idea, at last it shows something new, it’s not just another fantasy or sci-fi game. It seems it will blend the action and RPG elements in a great way. I’m sorry Mass Effect 2, there is too much action in you, give way to Alpha Protocol.
Hey fellow Axe-men,
Referring to a comment I left on the ‘EBC On Tap: Bonus Round Debate’ were you can find the full context of my babbling over here.
I wanna give a battle cry to all those publishers that treat their great IP like fragile little babies.
That’s why I wanna give my MBC shout out to Nintendo for doing the right thing, which is taking care of their fans and stockholders with a long term perspective, by not going for the easy money as some publishers do by pumping out another sequel based on old IP each year. So I don’t care if the new Zelda is gonna be delayed with another year, because that’s an IP that really deserves to only be released when it’s totally perfect.
See ya!
I was just watching this weeks EBC when I a thought hit me. It was about the possible future business models of games. I was thinking maybe the publishers could sell the game to a video game shop for like $10. And then the game stores would have to sell it for like $20 as long as it was advertised to be sold at that price from the beginning. And then the publisher can charge the gamer for the amount of hours he/she plays and for every hour charge them $5 for up to 6 hours and after 6 hours how ever much they play they won’t be charged. That way the publisher makes $40 on that game maximum from that gamer. And then if the gamer wishes to sell the game to a friend for like $15 or whatever price they can and the gamer will get some of the price back and the publisher be able to make some more money on the game. And also the new buyer saves some money too. After a while the publisher can lower the 6 hours cap to 5 then 4 then 3 and so on until it has no pay per hour and the publisher would still sell the game for $20 and make a profit of $10 per game. I tried my best to explain what I was thinking, I hope you understood the complexity of the topic. BTW, EBC is the best show ever.
My Battle Cry goes out to Ni No Kuni aka The Another World.
This game has everything going for it yet I feel like it’s not getting the attention it deserves. Level 5 are seemingly on top form at the moment with the Professor Layton series and the latest Dragon Quest games (of which IX looks like it too will kick ass), but with Studio Ghibli co-developing The Another World I honestly think it has the potential to be one of the best RPG’s of all time. I am a huge fan of Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki’s movies and the prospect of playing a game that has their incredible animation and story telling skills behind it is just beyond phenominal, the book that is supposed to come with the game sounds like a really interesting idea too. On top of that the music is going to be a full orchestral score being written by Joe Hisaishi (he’s the Japanese equivalent of John Williams), which will make this game the biggest DS game ever made (I’ve read that the total file size will be 4GB). I honestly think more people should be pumped for this game, I know I am.
My BattleCRY!!! goes to Tom Clancy personally since, i think the games baring his name have and have had an identity crisis for a while for now. And ubisoft isn’t doing anything only encouraging it! (and that is sick)
So why the hell are the realism part of all of the Tom Clancy series going to the toilet ? Every series has taken huge leap from great to worse. An tactical shooter to just shooter? A great tactical spy game to something closer to well something else and easier looking (not less complex). Why the hell is that?
Is it for the masses could fill their need for a game like well a brainless hollywood action fill. I don’t question their markets or their quest for more profits or anything but I srsly want a freggin real Rainbow Six game…
And then we come to the point of my rant.
Why not make a new IP or like a spinnoff for example Splinter Cell (more emphasis on hiding) and Ghost recorn (opener environments), just call it Tom C’s Jack Bauer ripoff… Instead of changing the hole friggin series to something it has not been.
And they did it quite successfully in the past didn’t they !? All started from R6 branching to different things and the original series to Raven Shield (my r6 fav) were all great and unique. (discounting Sum of All Fears for obvious reasons)
My Battle Cry for most anticipated game for this year is Halo: Reach! The multiplayer trailer just recently came out, and jet packs!! What more do I need to say!?
I live in Argentina.. That’s South America. But it isn’t the point. You know the new Resident Evil DLC? Well, it was going to be my first thing to be bought in the PSN.. BUT THE PLAYSTATION STORE ISN’T AVAILABLE ON MY COUNTRY, so pretty much I’m fucked. My battle cry of the week goes to SONY.. I WANT THE PLAYSTATION STORE IN MY COUNTRY GOD DAMN IT! I WANT TO PLAY SOME FUCKING RESIDENT EVIL 5 DLC! It’s like my most loved game. Please guys help me.. HELP EVERYBODY THAT GETS FUCKED LIKE THIS!
oh and, Naughty Bear. seriously, check it out
Hey hey,
Mine goes out to Crysis 2. Simple really.
It was filled with action and the environment of the game was very unique at the time. Hopefully the second will be multi player co-op mission and just as much fun as it first came out.
I dont know if there is a limit on battlecries, as mine was already chosen for a daily one. But I just have to give Portal 2 a Battlecry since it just recently got a confirmed release date.
As DK would say, Portal is Portal. The first game was insanely fun, I would go so far as to say one of the best games I have ever played. With the announcement of portal 2 I cant help but wonder about the potential this game has. With such a simple setup as the first game there is plenty of room for them to expand on, with new puzzles and challenges, possibly some story, and even the Co-op mode. There just isn’t much I can think to say, but I think that is only because its potential speaks for itself.
There are many great games to be released with enormous potential, but my very first Member Battle Cry goes out to the RPG game that me and several other people will be developing in the nearest future.
This is a project of our academic circle on Polish-Japanese Institute of IT. We are a bunch of huge RPG fans so we want to make something special, something that has deep storyline and delivers solid RPG experience.
Nothing has been made until now, we’re still discussing main technical issues like engine we want to use, because we are pretty much limited to open source engines or the ones that are free to use when full copy of the game is bought (like Neverwinter Nights’ Aurora engine) and other software. Of course the final result won’t be anything graphically sophisticated uless we get some sort of partnership from some game developer, but this is the topic for a different discussion.
Despite the fact there’s nothing yet to show to anybody, I have very high hopes based on the skills of every member – coders, 3D artists, concept artists, etc. – and of course our shared passion towards good RPG games.
If there’s anything new in our little project I can keep you posted, if you want that is
Best regards to the staff of The Axe and all its fans!
