With each passing year the gaming industry grows more and more competitive. Developers and publishers often take extreme measure to help differentiate their title from the crowd and in so doing, place lofty expectations within the hearts and minds of gamers the world over. On occasion, a particular game actually lives up to the hype, thereby granting a memorable experience to its players and inevitable success to its creators/marketers. With the recent release of God of War III, we’re reminded of how this scenario can play out…How a game with a huge fan base and ENORMOUS HYPE can actually fulfill expectations and deliver a sequel that not only surpasses its predecessors, but delivers a sense of hope that sometimes gamers don’t have to worry about being let down.
So, with that in mind, I pose the following question to you in this week’s MBC Topic Starter:
WHICH GAMES DELIVERED THE GOODS AND LIVED UP TO THE HYPE?
Obviously, you can pull from any generation and any console, but the goal remains the same. Tell us about a game you were SO FRICKIN’ PUMPED FOR that DIDN’T let you down! We’ve discussed the opposite spectrum of this topic before, so now it’s time to explore the positive side of hype.
Simple enough, right? Now, get busy thinking of the games that delivered, comment below with your Member BatleCry, check back daily to see if your Cry gets featured, and most of all, CRY HAVOC AND LET YOUR VOICE BE HEARD!!!!
Peace,
DK

I would have to say that Battlefield Bad Company 2 lived up to every bit of hype that I associated with it. There were no claims that weren’t met and the fun keeps getting more and more enjoyable.
One game from my past that still makes me smile at the satisfaction I got from the game was Final Fantasy VII. Everyone was singing the praises of that game before release, and I couldn’t have joined in the choir fast enough. I can still play that game and walk away in awe at the great game play and stellar story.
I gotta say one of the games that i was most hyped for was left 4 dead 1&2, any game where i get to continue trying to survive a zombie outbreak is way up there in my books.
It had everything a zombie game should, co-op, guns, blood, gore, interesting mutations of zombies and actually required a decent set of team work in order to survive the outbreak, you had a brilliant online mode and the fact that every game you played would be different was amazing
Sitting talking to mates about the night previous where a tank took out the whole team or a charger takes someone off a roof etc just every time you play the game there are moments where you think OH SNAP! that was awesome, nowadays in games thats a very rare thing to come across!
Valve never cease to amaze me with the quality of their games, half life, portal, team fortress.
Valve are probably one of the only developers we can actually trust in terms of delivering the goods!
Breath Of Fire 3:
One picture says more than 1000 words. That’s my first expresion of BOF3.
After its release in Japan 1997 I read about the game in the Official Playstation magazine and the hype started to grow inside of me. The BOF series is the first serie to criticize religions. Which was, at the time, very interesting.
The fact that you play as a boy the first half of the game and then as an adult was something new. The game is a typical ”traditional JRPG” but the graphics, story & character was something uniqe at the time. And don’t forget the Fishing-mini-game! 10/10!
The game is available on PSP for anyone who have missed it..
My battlecry goes out to, yet once again (sorry for the unoriginiality but hey what can i say) is Batman Arkham Asylum. This game started a lot of momentum in the last E3 and managed to keep that interest for the general public up too a good level.
Slowly but steady, Rocksteady (pun wasnt intended) slipped extra details about the game and made people known to this game.
Though a lot of people were ambigous about the game, because both predecesors aswell as other superhero games, were recieved at highest lookwarm (is that spelled right?). This game from the get go had so much too fight for. Not only the prejuduice about superhero games, but also with license based games, the overall climate was terrible.
But this game had more and better vibe about it. No movie tie-ins, no timeschedule, only the comics and the cartoon from the 90′s.
In their videos that were shown the real deal of voice actors were there, which gave it a big push forward.
The gameplay that they shown was spot on(hence the demo worked so well to show you every aspect of the game, with out hinting any story elements).
And Rocksteady managed to get peoples interest and attention.
And then came the reviews…
Solid 9′s or more all over the place. The reviewers loved the game. It was immersive, the gameplay was great, the story fitted perfectly in the overall Batman franchise and the acting was topnotch.
And also in sales the game was widespread holding a bunch of records and eventually even was titled “the best superhero game ever.”
Yeah Batman Arkham Asylum really brought a lot of hype, but managed to deliver the goods in a bucket load more than expected.
This is my first MBC, with being blown away by GOW III and being so eager to talk about the topic I feel as though it was a must.
A couple of games that I can say I was extremely pumped for and they did not let me down was Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Highest of my praise going to the 4th iteration in the series.
I first played Metal Gear Solid 2 because it was recommended by a friend when I first bought my playstation 2. Needless to say I was hooked. Immediately played the original and craved for more of the tacitcal espionage action which made the series popular. While waiting for the next two games to come out, I went into Metal Gear Mode, watching the trailers and formulating theories to how the story was going to play out and what twists were going to arise in the story. Some would say I was setting myself up for dissapointment and that the game would never live up to rediculous amount of hype I was generating in my own mind. Truth be told both games, (Metal Gear Solid 4 more so) completely blew me away and I could not tear myself away from the tv until the games were complete.
I feel that I was most blown away by Metal Gear Solid 4. With it being the closing chapeter of Solid Snake and being the first installment of the series being on the Playstation 3 I feel it had the most hype to live up to with so much room for dissapointment, and I feel it delivered on all accounts and then some. There aren’t many games that pull me out for the midnight release because of my schedule and I made the time for MGS4 and it was well deserved because that game definitely delivered.
My BattleCry goes out to Mass Effect 2 because it lived up to the hype and more. The graphics were beautiful, the vistas were breathtaking and the areas felt alive. But there are two areas where I was well and truly blown away, the story and the way they handled the DLC. The DLC I was really surprised with how they handled it. I had originally heard about how there would be the exclusive download code to unlock the extra character, but I didn’t realize it would unlock SO MUCH. The amount of free DLC that they’ve put out so far is amazing and far more than I was expecting. I’m actually so happy about the way the DLC’s worked so far that I’m more than happy to pay 800, 1200, however many points for the new character coming out in April.
Of course, the real winner for ME2 is the story. Now, it’s a BioWare game, so I was expecting a good story, but I wasn’t prepared for how deep and immersive it was going to be. Going through the squad’s loyalty missions really helped flesh each character out and made you really care about them. And there’s all the little things in there as well, from the GameStop Salarian to the Krogan talking about Presidium fish to the Asari/Hanar stockbrokers that really flesh out the world and make it feel alive, not just some map you’re running through to the next mission.
This is completely off the topic of disappointing games but needs to be done as my EBC of the week.
My Epic Battlecry is going out to Blizzard for not only resetting the Diablo II ladder but releasing a new content patch simultaneously. Blizzard is continuing to support the games that laid the foundation of their company many years ago. This is great for the gamers that are still playing Diablo II 10 years after it was released. This will not only tide the Diablo II players over till Diablo 3 but will enthrall alot of previous Diablo II players back into the diablo universe. A big applause is due to any developer that continues to support and add new content to games.
Thanks Blizzard, keep it up!
My battlecry goes out to the final fantasy franchise.
This is for me a personally a franchise that kept evolving into more then just an avarage rpg game.
The stories kept getting better. Since Final fantasy 7 they keep astounding me with the graphics, wich are fr*cking awesome, the gameplay mechanics are executed perfectly with very indept leveling and upgrading systems. Every new FF game they keep trying to innovate the system with new leveling systems and gameplay mechanics, wich keep it fresh and not feeling repetetive, and what makes me excited for each new title in the franchise. And thats also whats keeping this franchise running, the innovation and experimenting new types of gameplay within the style of an RPG game.
Franchises like halo and god of war all keep bringing out great sequels, but it lacks new innovations that keep it fresh (except for graphical enhancements). It’s not that they are not great games, but because u know what to expect, they don’t really live up to the hype for me personally.
My battle cry goes out to Mega Man Legends. When this game was released, gamers everywhere heard “Mega man” and turned their head to look. The franchise had not over saturated itself at that point in time. IT was right in the middle of the Mega Man X franchise, and Mega Man 8 was released around that time as well. The series was still kicking series ass by being both brutally hard and brutally good. With the transition from 2D to 3D, you never know if a series will go smooth or turn to a complete pile.
With the transition to 3D, Mega Man had huge shoes to fill. It was the newest in a long collection of great 2D side scrolling games that are very nostalgic for most of us gamers out there. Transitioning from side scrolling to 3D is a huge thing. The game more than lived up to it’s name and the hype. It was, also, one of the best games in the series and one of the better games on that system, which is a pretty tall statement. The game changed quite a bit and gave it more story, but it was it’s own entity. It did not need Dr Light and Dr Wily. It did keep Roll. That was cool.
The game, itself, was something of an action adventure game. There was an overworld that was fun to explore and a bunch of dungeons you would visit. As is fitting with that type of game, it gave you a lot of story, and it was actually interesting. It wasn’t amazing story, but it held your interest and made you care. That was a first for the franchise. Aside from this, it had you shooting all kinds of robots with a variety of different weapon types that you gathered over the course of the game, just like any good Mega Man game should. The end result was a truly excellent and often overlooked action adventure game that shouldn’t have been missed
My battle cry goes out to the franchises that dominate our gaming world. Franchises that are house hold name like Halo, Mario, Zelda and COD. MY battle cry deals with the problem that many of these franchises face. That problem is with the casual fans who see a game like Halo: Reach and immediately assume that is more of the same. Granted that the overall formula hasnt differed from the path that bungie took it down back in 2001 but that is what makes Halo uniquely halo. So for those out there who (and im looking at YOU GRICE) same that halo is the same well it is. But its the same for a reason and that is dont mess with what works. For example if they were to put Iron sighting into halo it would be a very different game and I will bet that at least 80% of halo gamers would disagree and complain. So next time when you say “it’s the same” think for a second maybe that its better that way.
My Battlecry goes out to, a game that in the start had quite a bit of hype but when it came out hardly anybody bought because of the quality of the rest of its kin, and that game is Ultimate Spiderman, a spiderman game that was actually good, awesome swinging mechanics combined with a sligthly altered spiderman universe, and then the fact that you race against the human torch is hilarius, i hope you guys will give it some of the glory it deserves.
from SpookyGoose the guy from the country that is shortened DK!
PS.. Denmark the neighboor of the country that made Tyrkisk Pebber that i personally call the devils buttom beeds.
My battlecry goes to an unfortunately fairly unknown title called “The Witcher” for the PC.
I was really hyped for this game. I remember that I had just been crushed by the disappointment I found in Final Fantasy X-2 and I couldn’t bare to start playing Baldur’s Gate for the 3rd time all over again… although I did try.
Suddenly I hear rumors of an dark and mature themed RPG for the PC based on the work of a Polish writer named Andrzej Sapkowski called “The Witcher”.
Immediately I though the story had to deliver, the theme will definitely push my buttons and it’s a PC RPG. The hype went trough the roof.
I have to say that, while the gameplay had it’s flaws, I really liked the overall feel and experience I got from the game.
Moreover coming from an unknown developer “CD Projeckt Red” it was definitely a great surprise to have it deliver on my personal hype.
My battle cry goes out to Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment who are to Set Up a New Montreal Studio for there DC comics franchises.
My discomfort with this is not so much that they are taking advantage of the tax incentives Canada can provide to them, but more there recent acquisition of the British based Rocksteady studios creators of last years second best game Batman Arkham Asylum.
I fear Warner Bros see the talented people within Rocksteady and with its recent acquisition of the company will tear this talented group of people apart and will dilute the creative talent that is behind the Batman Arkham Asylum games.
Studios like Warner Brother’s after all are demonstrating there cost efficiency by moving to Canada for Tax purposes, it does not bode well for Rocksteady and I see another Game Developer name gradually disappearing or other game projects that Rocksteady might have made in the future all but vanish.
I know that I have probably touted the accolades of this game enough, but my battle cry goes to Dragon Age: Origins.
The game was billed as the “spiritual successor” to the Baldur’s Gate franchise, and was built as a game that offered more customization and modding, since this was an original IP owned by Bioware. Dragon Age: Origins had huge shoes to fill.
What was given was a RPG that allowed you to truly influence your story, a wonderful battle system with such a wide array of classes that you never have to play the same character twice, and a masterpiece of a story that was gripping til the end. Hats off to Mr. Gaider and company. To cap everything off, this game delivered, with a RPG of the year award to show what it accomplished. This game created a rich universe in a single game, opening endless possibilities for future games. DA:O is a game you will get you money’s worth and more.
My battlecry goes out to the game that achieved mine and hopefully other peoples expection is the release of Final fantasy VIII, while others might think that 7 was a more popular addition to the franchise, VIII achieved something that only several franchise can cn and thats an emotional but gripping story with characters that made you feel like you were going through the struggle with them throughout the game, enviornments which looked appealling to the eye and gave you the feeling like you’re there or want to be there and believe me alot of the time i spent playing it i spent more time looking at the different enviornments than playing the game. What helped VIII to achieve the feeling of emersion and also helped was not only the detailed enviornments but also one of the best musical scores in any videogame in the RPG genre or any genre for that matter. With every new final fantasy there the kind of games where you’re told what to expect from a new game but you really can’t understand what the expectations will be until you experience each game yourself and with a experienced and innovative team at square enix with every final fantasy game theres no such thing as expectation theres only imagination
Hola senors………………..and DK.
anyway for my battcry i’d like to respond to your guys comments on ubisoft and the whole AC2 DRM problem. First off i’d like to start off by saying in no way shape or form do i support what ubisoft did however i do think that you guys aren’t looking at the big pictures of things. Do you really think ubisoft is sitting on their asses thinking “how can we screw with PC gamer even more?”. This isn’t bobby and activision here. The bigger issue i think with this is piracy forcing the hand of ubisoft into taking extreme DRM measures. If ubisoft found only a small percentage of people were pirating their single player PC games they wouldn’t be doing this crazy stuff. It is easy to blame a big evil company for this problem but the problem runs deeper than them. I know it seems like a cop out to simply blame it on piracy but looking at games that aren’t big on multiplayer like AC2 and crysis pirating is a major problem and crytek said themselves that because of how much cyrsis was pirated that they won’t be doing PC exclusives and was a big reason why crysis 2 is now being made for consoles. People are always shouting how PC gaming is dieing and this is why because pirates are taking huge chunks of profits out of these companies and when these guys try to fight it with tougher DRM they get blasted by the gaming community. At this rate if pc gamers and publishers can’t find some common grounds on where DRM’s can go and publisher continually find PC games turning is less and less profit i wouldn’t be surprised if devs start creating for consoles first and then porting to pc or publisher start pulling out of the PC market in general. Again i’m not condoning what ubisoft did here just that there are 2 sides to this story. hopefully, PC gamers and publisher can kind some middle ground or else the only PC games that are going to exist are WoW(or anything blizzard made game for that matter) and solitaire.
I have a bit of an odd battle cry.
It goes out to the used game market.
I’ve been hyped about Assassin’s Creed 2 sense I finished the first game. I absolutely couldn’t wait to play this game, but as a PC gamer I simply can’t support Ubisoft and their horrid DRM. Thankfully I’ve got a 360 sitting on my shelf, and the used game market allows me to purchase Assassin’s Creed 2 without supporting Ubisoft in any way shape or form.
So thank you used gaming for allowing me a way to vote with my hard earned cash. Without resorting to piracy, and without forcing me to completely pass on a game I’ve been looking forward to.
Greetings all!
It is with a heavy heart i give my battle cry regarding piracy
First of i’d like to say that i work as a developer at a studio owned by one of the top three publishers.
The Ubisoft DRM has caused a lot of buzz not to say the least. I would just, most humbly, like for the gamers out there to know how a developer might feel in the wake of this DRM.
I’ve worked on three major titles so far in my career and there is one single fact that amazes me after each release; the huge amount of piracy on the PC versions. All the titles Ive worked on so far has all had a piracy percentage over 82% on the PC (sometimes up to 92%).
This DRM gets a huge amount of hate from all sides, from other developers, to gamers and journalists. And i understand you all. It does suck that the new Ubi titles cannot reach people living in areas which lack or has unstable connections. The very, very sad truth is that those people represents a very tiny percentage compared to the amount of people who acquire our games illegally, and of course we consider those pirates potential costumers if a pirated version is not available.
So i feel your pain, but it’s come to the point where we know that the offline DRM’s simply does not work, they are cracked within hours. Despite rumors of the new online DRM being cracked, simple research can prove otherwise. It has been, using warez scene terms, nuked. In reality this means that you can start the game but only play it for a short time before it freezes.
I think this is a last resort from UBI trying to make PC an eligible platform to develop games for. If it fails i sadly believe we will see a steady decline in games for the PC.
Best regards
Khoplin
My battle cry goes out to ModNation Racers. I just recently saw a couple new videos on GT where the developers were explaining the art design, physics, racing and combat, the customization options, etc. I must say I am really hyped for this game now after viewing those videos. This game looks like so much fun with a couple of buddies online or off (actually even more fun offline).
This game is releasing right around Red Dead Redemption give or take a week, and after seeing them videos for ModNation I’m not quite sure which one I’d rather get. Red Dead looks amazing but ModNation might come first. Check it out. I’m hyped for this game.
Hopefully this wont be skimmed over since its closely related to the first MBC you chose….. its funny though, I wanted to write about this from the getgo but didnt have time to last night.
Anyway MBC : Metal Gear Solid
At least for me, its impossible to think about a game that lives up to hype without this little gem popping up.
Certainly later iterations of the franchise were big deals…. but come on…. did anything satisfy as much as the first??
I must’ve re-read the article in the awesome Next Generation magazine back then, with the featured preview of this game a million times. Just the concept of 3D stealth play, in the vein of the also awesome NES Metal Gear…. the graphics looked so amazing and full of style…. I remember the sparks from gunshots on the walls… etc….. and this was all pre-internet hype…. hell maybe it was just me.. haha but it just felt like a big thing….. you could feel it you know??
To be honest, the actual game couldnt have been more excellent. The story is still the best one of the series. The characters… is there a single game out there.. (any genre) that has a lineup of villains so full of personality, originality and plain awesomeness… all fitting in a framework that still felt somewhat believable.. (no vampires… or fat guys on rollerblades… so lame).
Gameplay, probably the tightest game out there, even today. Masterful at combining story with actual gameplay. And even the simple gunplay and cover worked…. radar was flawless, shooting was simple. Arguably the sequels made it better… certainly more realistic, but I would venture to ask if its as much fun…
Finally the art…. I dont know how this is achieved…. but I still feel today that this game has better graphics than any of its successors.. haha, yeah not technically.. but there was such a lovingly crafted aesthetic placed on the environments.. (with the palette being oddly simple yet characteristic)… And yet again, the character design….
Anyway.. I could go on…. all I know is I play this game through at least once a year…. and though I have the Gamecube version… its the classic PS version that not only lived up to… but mercilessly cleaved the hype attributed to it.
Thank you Kojima, MGS and Solid Snake
My member battle cry goes out to the previously high hyped game,Uncharted 2:Among Thieves
The game was an awesomely huge success and one of the biggest sellers of 2009.The game had a very large hype for a very large audience but after the game released it never let us down,It had Jaw dropping visuals, very fluid and awesome combat, very outstanding single player and a descent online component
Uncharted:Drake’s fortune was very underrated by most of the people even though it had one of the greatest graphics and gameplay of it’s time and also had a strange twist of enemies at one point.but naughty dog decided to go for a sequel that never let us down and even got GotY awards all over the place. And for that I want to thank naughty dog for creating an awesome experience that was enjoyed by gamers and the industry all over the world
Thanks for your input and insight Khoplin, here on the ‘Axe the goal is to generate dialogue about the issues facing the industry today and of course, piracy and the subsequent DRM issue is a rather large one. That said, there have been various methods instituted by various companies to address the issue, and the information we’ve gathered suggests that, while on paper making sense, the Ubisoft DRM strategy appears to alienate the consumers that do in fact support their titles at the retail level. Yes, I understand your point and know that it must be tough for pubs/devs to justify development costs on a platform where upwards of 90% of the exposure to their title comes through illegitimate means, but from the consumer’s perspective, the issue lies in purchasing a product that effectively doesn’t deliver on expectations. Also, your brief yet insightful take on the situation serves as an example of how Ubi SHOULD be communicating with its customers. “We understand your frustration.” “We’re working hard to ensure your experience with our product is a good one.” “Our goal is to support this platform in the best way we know how while meeting the expectations of you, our valued consumer.” Something…ANYTHING along these lines would serve to dispel the frustration of gamers, which is why we brought the topic up in the first place…To seek answers. To better understand the situation. To try and create a conversation between the two parties so that the industry can move forward.
Again, thx for your input and I truly hope that gamers, pubs, and devs can communicate on these critical issues in order to advance the industry that we all know and love.
Cheers gang,
DK
[...] here continuing our week of Member BattleCries pertaining to those few and far between titles that ACTUALLY DELIVER ON THE HYPE! Yep, ya know, the games that somehow manage to live up to expectations even after they’ve [...]
My epic battle cry goes out to the game indusry for the increase in the idea of increasing game prices i have an idea where you pay 75 to 80 for a game gut you only pay 20-25 for the sequel or next iteration. Many game are built off the first game engine cough “like many games” and this would be less taxing on game developers this would really work for sport games because sometimes they only need to be re skinned with an update or movie games like fox or marvel could partner up with a game studio to produce one good movie game with many skins and it would be great advertising because when you buy this game you get a discount on such and such that’s coming out this summer. imgine if e.t was based on a star wars game engine it wouldn’t have been so shity.
This can work now with the massively huge hard drives we have now with 120 and 250′s gb’s on xbox 360 and ps3′s. You can download the update and give game stop an fu witch is two fu’s because you would be less likely to resale your game
My battle cry goes to the insanity that is battle cry topics. Each week DK tells us how the week’s member battle cries should be themed and that the best will win some sweet GOG action. As the week rolls on everyday one is chosen on this theme and then in some twisted example of reverse negative re-enforcement for the main prize a completely random battle cry is chosen.
This is like asking people to send in pictures of their cat and then declaring the winner as the guy who sent in a drawing of a midget riding an alien.
Transmission end.
My member battle cry goes to Battlefield: Bad Company 2. The hype train didn’t really build up until the final weeks before release but I find the game to live up to its hype. Obviously the game was aiming to take some of the crowd from Modern Warfare 2, especially those (like me) who disappointed in the multiplayer experience. The game requires teamwork, communication is necessary, and the overall game encompasses the idea of working together. Although the game isn’t the most refreshing take on the genre, it has that great Battlefield feel that I hadn’t felt on the consoles till now. Also, the balance is almost perfect so that when you take a grenade launcher shell TO THE FACE, you feel responsible for not taking action first.
My only gripe are the players who don’t understand the role of Recon. RECON ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE OFFENSIVE! Recon must scout for any resisting force to benefit the team and set traps for the enemy to slow down their offense. Recon are NOT supposed to sit in the backwoods with a recliner chair and a 6 pack of Miller Lite.
Hopefully those who haven’t tried the game will put down Modern Warfare 2 and pick this up and hopefully see what I see in the game.
WHAT’S UP!!! MY AXELORDS of BRUTALITY, MY SLAVEDRIVERS OF SACRILEGE. HOW ART THOU!!!
Always wanted to try that…
Anyway my BattleCry goes out to Gears of War and Gears 2. At at time when the 360 was still suffering from RROD (as if it isn’t still, but much less) MS needed a big game to get people to forget about the crap hardware and focus on the games. Gears of War was that title, almost as highly prized as MS’s Halo, Gears washed away the crap gamers went through like Perfect Dark Zero in a river of blood. Gears 2 promised to be bigger, badder, and more bad as in the words of Cliffy B. (who for whatever reason doesn’t like that name). Damn was it ever!
If there are any franchises with the chance to be the first great video game movie, Gears of War is one of them. If there is any franchise worth going through the 360 replacement process for, Gears of War has to be one of them.
Thanks for your reply Daniel!
What you say is very true, the communication between devs and costumers is almost non-existent. I have (and most of my colleges) on numerous occasions felt frustration over the lack of information being handed to the costumers. It is however not up to any developer to just “speak his mind”. There is a reason why i do not name the studio or publisher at which i currently work. Here is why:
People could interpret what i say, which is my personal opinion, as being the opinion of my employer. Together with the wonderful ways of the internet and it’s flamers this could soon convert into a “public statement from this or that studio”. Therefore these matters is handled by the marketing department. This does however NOT mean that we do not read the forums almost everyday. We know what you feel and we feel your pain. Developers are not evil people, in my experience we try to cater to the costumer as much as we possibly can. I can’t keep track of how many times I’ve stayed at the office for six or seven hours overtime to fix that bug that is bugging everyone on the forum, or to do those final tweaks to make sure everything is balanced right.
But back to the topic at hand:
I’ve learned that the AC2 launcher now prompts players with illegal copies of the game with the opportunity to purchase a CD-key online. I find it VERY interesting If the frustration of not being able to play their illegal copy pushes them to make a purchase. I would also be very interested in the PC sales of the game as of yet.
So i make a humble request to the children of the Axe: If you manage to obtain any sales figures on AC2 for the PC, please let us all know in future podcasts. I would very much like to put a nail in the coffin on this one, knowing if the DRM increased or decreased sales.
Best regards
Khoplin
Hey guys how’s it going?
My Battle Cry goes out to this week’s episode (23/03/10) of The Gadget Show! Now how’s it related to gaming? Well the creators of the show had created an exact replica of the awesome “The Pit” level in Modern Warfare 2 and they competed against an actual special forces officer who ran through the obstical course, picking out targets, climbed the stairs, jumped the ledge and sprinted to the finish line!
The officer ran through the actual course while competing against one of the hosts who did it in the game!
Just wanted to shout out about how cool it was.
Thanks
P.S: Oh and The Gandget Show comes on the FIVER Channel over in the UK! Maybe you could find it over in Youtube?….
My battlecry goes out to the only game series I buy without hesitation, Shin Megami Tensei. More specifically SMT: Persona 3, the one game I believe truely has it all: the story, the cast, the heart, the looks, the soundtrack, and of corse the gameplay.
The Dark Hour the engigmatic time that happens between one day and another. It is here that those unaware of its existance are enclosed within a coffin and the beings called shadows live. Its is here where our main cast comes in a band, or rather club, of high school students all aware of the exsistance of this extra time. The silent protaganist, the best friend who more likely to leap before looking, the school idol who might be regarded as the Heroine, the Beautiful and elegant only child of a rich family, the hard working and confident captain of the boxing team, and many other as well as the secondary cast. All of whom interactactions and development with the protaganist make all of the relationships worth developing. But one can not forget the extensive cast of over 120 persona, made up of various beings from different myths and mythology, the protaganist has acess to with a little work.
As for the look one can not discount it for a PS2 game, even if it was 7 months after the PS3 same out. And no one can not love the song “The Battle for Everyone’s Souls”.
Game play is that of a four man team dungeon crawl with randomly generated floor layout. The use of only one dungeon, with only different locations used for combat is story sensative events, and use a barriors helps to prevent you from focusing too much on just the combat seeing as school life is a very important part of the game. Combats greatness comes out in the versatility of the protaganist in his persona, and the differences in the weapons he can use. As for the other 3 they are AI controlled with basic stratagies to give them, but the AI works well enough that it doesn’t feel like a chore to play with.
As for my last thing to mention I’m not sure if it says more about me or the game, but something must be said when someone is willing to buy the same game three times withing a span of three years.
Yes, the Arcana is the means by which all is revealed…

My battle cry goes to Assassins Creed 2.
Ubisoft had a great idea for a game when they made the first Assassins Creed. Whether or not you liked the first game is a mixed opinion for people. I even hear it as referred to sometimes as one of the most over hyped game ever.
Regardless of whether or not you liked the first game though, Ubisoft made promises for AC2. They worked on those keeping those promises and combined that with the great relationship they kept with their community (DRM debate aside), to build a new hype for AC2. The result of their hard work was a game that not only actually lived up to the hype but was at least nominated for most Game of the Year awards.
Assassins Creed 2 was by far my favorite experience last year and I can say that my hype was very well satisfied.
That is a good one. I think it was two weeks ago that I had a member battle cry about GT5 that got highlighted, and was all excited for some GOG action. The episode (I think it was 66) even had Tony give his battle cry about GT5′s new night racing trailer. I thought, “Oww sweet, I bet mine is next”. Of Course it wasn’t. Granted I’m always happy for the winner whoever it may be.

My battle cry goes out to activision. On gametrailers there is a video for modern warfare 2 stimulus package map pack. The video shows players of the game depressed because there maps are old and they basically need a change of scenery. So this dlc provided by failvision gives us five maps but only three of the five are new and the other two come from modern warfare one. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Most of the people who’ve played the first modern warfare will not agree with buying this dlc especially at this price. This is a prime example when dlc goes wrong. Many game developers out there should take this as a example when selling dlc. The video contradicts its message of giving us new unfamiliar places to explorer and shoot people with old and familiar places. I’m selling my copy of modern warfare 2 today and putting it towards a better investment(red dead redemption) and if you were smart you would do the same thing too.
My Battle Cry goes all the way back to Super Metroid on the SNES. It’s hard to remember a game with such a hype behind it and a lot of expectations from the fans that completely blew them away and delivered such an awesome experience. Still to this days is often considered to be the best game in that platform.

Alright My Battle Cry goes out to Fable….
Hahaha just kidding. Actually it goes out to Gears of War 2, which was incredibly hyped up by Cliffy B as being bigger, better, and more badass. And it most certainly was. The story was leagues better than the first with clearly defined goals, clever twists, and even an emotional tie in. The action was amped up with bigger guns (The Mortar, The Mulcher), much better boss battles (The sea beast compared to the ridiculously awful GOW 1 Corpser battle), and even the driving sections were more fun to play. The overall feel of the game was bigger and made all the tasks seem imperative to the survival of humanity. The multiplayer was considerably updated as well with more balanced maps and more play modes. Combine that with the Horde mode and the games replay value sky rockets. As far as games living up to their hype, Gears of War 2 is a prime example and will remain a permanent member of my collection.
My battle cry goes out to Nintendo franchises. Zelda, Mario, and Metroid all deliver great gaming experiences. And when they all teamed up in Smash BRos. it was heaven. But what about the other key franchise. Where is Star Fox. It seams like Fox is becoming a secondary character. Star Fox 64 was awesome. Adventures was not good and Assault was O.K. But when have not heard of what has happened to the franchise. Also where is Donkey Kong. I would love to play another game like DK 64 but hwat is nintendo doing for some of their star characters. They are putting them secondary to the others. I hope that when Metroid Other M comes out and makes a lot of money that Nintendo will realize giving other developers their franchises is not bad. DK 64 was made by Rare and it was beautiful. So I hope that we will get a good shooter Star Fox and another Donkey Kong adventure.
