Here on the’ Axe we strive to impact the interactive entertainment industry through thought provoking, insightful discussions that help publishers, developers, and players alike keep there fingers on the pulse of the gaming world. Oh, and we also like to think up crazy-ass ideas for stuff that would be AWESOME! So, after last week’s in-depth discussion on all things 2D gaming, we thought we’d skip to the next dimension and break down the impact of 3D technology in the past, present, and future. We do just that on Skirmish 071 of EpicBattleCry (coming your way soon!), but we thought it’d be a good idea to gather up YOUR thoughts on the matter as well (since, as noted, that’s kinda what EBA is all about…).
So, with 3D technology being more prevalent than ever, this week’s Member BattleCry topic starter is tasking YOU with a bit of brainstorming in order to deliver your ideas on exactly how 3D tech SHOULD be implemented into gaming. Do you wanna see a ton of it down the line? Is it only good in specific areas? Is it in fact the FUTURE of gaming on the whole? The best way we see fit for you to communicate your thoughts to us is to pinpoint a franchise where you see 3D being best implemented. Think about God of War, Mass Effect, Super Mario Bros., Zelda, Gran Turismo, Halo, etc…How would it work? How would it make for a better experience? How would it truly impact the way we play? With that in mind, we pose the following question as this week’s MBC Topic Starter.
WHICH GAMING FRANCHISES DO YOU THINK COULD MOST BENEFIT FROM 3D TECHNOLOGY?
Try to think outside the box gang…We’re looking for some innovative ideas here and as the industry stands at yet another crossroads in technology, your ideas very well may help shape the future of the medium (you never know who is reading!). As always, we’ll be selecting a new MBC each day here on EpicBattleAxe.com and then selecting one Member BattleCry of the Week that will be showcased on the next skirmish of EpicBattleCry.
Alright, that should get you started…Don’t be shy in your suggestions and have fun coming up with unique ways you see 3D being implemented in gaming!
Cheers gang,
DK

The game most likely to benefit from 3d technology is Dead or Alive… Maybe we would see a re-emergence of the 3d fighting game (ala SFIV).
Besides think about all of that junk coming at ya.
In my opinion I feel that 3D technologies would be best used in the cut-scenes and trailers/movies etc. of gaming. I use the example of one of the most average and brilliant films released to date – Avatar.
Avatar managed to pull of a visual masterpiece that used 3D to give an engaging and exciting experience for the audience. The depth of field that was created in the screen with the 3D (instead of gimmick Disney 3D) technology was great.
Now if you could adapt this in the story telling of cut-scenes in games (for example the great clips seen in Halo Wars), I think it could really get the viewer into the story/environment of the game. If you can engage people in the story of a game to the extent that Avatar did, then the future of story telling in the gaming industry really could be taken to another level.
However I do not really want to see all future games franchises jumping on the 3D band wagon, just for the sake of it. I want real innovation, I am sure the creative minds at some of the great studios can think of something original!
WHATS UP MY BRUISERS OF BASHING, MY COLLEGEUS OF CLOBBERIN’ HOW ART THOU??? (brent is way better at this, im even doubting if I have spelled it right haha)
My Battle Cry goes out to Mirrors Edge 2….
If the game will ever come to fruition. The essence of Mirrors Edge was free running. If this game has the possibility of using 3D environments, it will give you a much more indepth gameplay experience. You can see more precies how far a ledge would stick out, it would feel much more real when you fight a couple of cops.
You would really have the feeling of being a freerunner, which in the real world is quite difficult. When you as a player would be Faith, (damn that would have worked last week, but now to late) you can coördinate much better your jumps, runs, and other actions to get away from the totaliristic regime that has the city in it grasp.
also the hand to hand combat would feel more fluetly, because you see that the hand/weapon is getting closer to you, thus your timing for a “takedown”-esq kind of move would be enhanced.
(the question though still remains if we would need this kind of 3D *thinking smiley*)
So in conclusion, My 3D battlecry goes out to Mirrors Edge 2
I think that motion controlled games could really benefit from 3D technology, beeing able to interact with something with our own body, by using Natal, Sony Move or Wii is in itself pretty interesting. 3D could make it possible to make it look like the thing you interact with is actually there and you might be able to interact with it better.
On the other hand it will be hard to make this kind of technology, since the system than has to calculate the position of the person to the position of the not existing item, that the person sees.
Ohh and it will look even more stupid, doing all that jump stuff with weird glasses
Hello my fellow axe wielders, well my franchise that i believe would benefit most from 3D technology would be the God of War frachise.
Now GoW3 alone looks amazing with all the huge sceneries that you experience in that game. Just imagine climbing a titan in…3D!!!!*does that movie announcer voice* just imaging it just sends ghoosebumps
down my spine.
Also another cool aspect that would benefit from the 3D would be those first person death experiences where Kratos is beating the living crap outta you. Just imagine a fist coming right at ya and after that severe beating Kratos cries in victory, “DOLPHIN BLOOD BEER.”
I say let’s wait for true 3D tech before putting it in games. Or, at least, make it an option that you can ignore(not like the Ubisoft DRM).
The current “3D” is the same, in principle, as the US 3D cinemas from the 50′s. No improvment. Except the fact that, now, you have it in youre living room. Old idea made new…
So I’ll wait for my holodeck, thank you very much.
I would personally like to see what they can come up with in 3D in survival horror games and the like. I’m sure they could find some new ways to scare the shit out of us, wouldn’t it be nice to have a facehugger literally jumping right in your face?
Also, I am looking forward to some sports and driving games (even though I am not a huge fan of neither genre anymore), not because it would enhance the gameplay all that much, but it would probably help getting you involved in it even more and really feeling like you are on a race track or golf course.
First off, let me state that I gave this battle cry some serious thought. After considering the addition of 3D to all of my favorite franchises, and trying to think of as many new ideas as I could possibly dream up, I have come to one conclusion. Fuck 3D gaming.
Somehow I feel that all these so called leaps forward are just so that these companies can say that they’ve pioneered in some way, and not so that they can actually add anything significant to the games. True, 3D adds some depth of vision, but people need to step back and realized that it goes nowhere to advance the depth of strategy, or gameplay.
What I don’t want is another James Cameron type person who promotes a 3D game as mind-blowing, only for us to figure out that he’s just an old man with his head jammed so far up his ego/asshole that he can’t see he’s made something half-assed and too blurry to make sense of.
Quite frankly, 3D gaming is a joke. 3D hasn’t been mind-blowing since the nineteen eighties, which started 30 years ago. I see it all going the way of motion controls. It will go years if not decades before someone can figure out anything worth while to do with it. Of course, people will still eat it up and justify their 3D purchases by pretending it’s all good, and pretty soon all game companies will jump on the bandwagon and fart out as many awful 3D shovel-wear games as they can, but I wish people would realize how much room for innovation we have now instead of going for these useless gimmicks.
Here are some things that actually are mind-blowing and innovative.
Choices you make in a game continuing throughout an entire series: Mass Effect
Being able to put two portals anywhere in your environment and go through one to come out the other side: Portal (This one in particular leads to physical situations that even the developers, who made the game, did not think possible.
Running around a sphere in space with the ability to jump from one sphere and be effected by the gravity of another: Super Mario Galaxy
And then they’re are games that do little to innovate but are still fucking awesome, examples being the set pieces in God of War III and Modern Warfare 2. I feel that all of the awesome memorable moments in those games would be ruined and blurred out while looking behind 3D glasses.
So to be the complete dissident, but I feel it needs to be said.
I would like to see a first-person 3D Fight Night Round 5 with Natal support. Just give me that and I’m good. Any and all Wii-Sports bundle sports (Tennis, bowling, baseball, golf, and archery) used in 3D w/Natal support. That would be awesome.
Something I would love to see but would be impossible to implement is UFC 2011 in 3D.
I must second the suggestion for Mirror’s Edge. I really liked the first game and that game would have been perfect in 3D,
Woot someone agrees haha
wellllllllll…it’s pretty obvious TBH, FPSs and driving sims would benefit most because you are actually using the Z axis. frankly that’s the whole and only point of 3D is to give the screen depth, so seeing the apex of a corner coming towards you in 3D would probably actually help your driving and being able to judge distances better would help with the fragging and sniping/running and gunning.
that said i really like what braindead1981 said about survial horror you could get some genuine, good ol’ fashioned scares in there.
where as i would love to play GOW3 in HD as mentioned, it wouldn’t add as much to the gameplay, not like FPS/driving sims. RTSs would look sweet, but i think motion controls would add more individually compared to 3D.
now, this has been touched on already as well. where as i’m hopeful but sceptical about motion controls, if they are implimented in to a 3D experience then that’ll be the be all and end all of both those technologies. in fact, the only way i can see Natal being a truely imersive, controllerless experience is if the control interface is presented in 3D. although this particular example would suck in reality, imagine a 3D piano and natal functionality, then apply that to what ever interests you. the truth is that without out feedback and tactility a lot of these things will be shit, because there will be very little accuracy, but if you want proper Minority Report controls, you need a 3D interface.
one thing i do wonder about however is split screen 3D. would that still work? i guess it’s be like in the cinema, but i noticed a few blurry edges and shit at the movies.
well i believe many gameing franchises do come to mind when it comes to topics like this but i believe the one’s that would benefit from the whole 3D jazz that’s going would be duh the puzzle gaming. games like tetris and intelligant qube, lumines etc… would work best because now if used with motion controllers or the head tracking device you guys talked about last time or even natal. it would make the puzzle experience shine more than it way back when they were in style. just think of how fast you had to move your body to keep moving puzzles around or make room to make line in tetris by moving yourself to find a gap fast enough before you lose. it would be very entertaining for all kinds of gamers via single or groups.
other cool franchise that can benefit from 3D technology would be future speed racing games like F zero and may others like it because it would cool to get lost in the speed and also and getting that real live rush of speeding so fast like if you was really driving that fast and not losing yourself to try to memorize the short cuts of the stages like most games make you feel. atleast this way you’ll lose your awareness to the hype of game and just go nuts on enjoying yourself how fast you going like those old Commercial with the dude sitting on a chair and puts a cd or tape into a stereo and feels the sound blowing him away thats the kinda of feeling i’m talking about that type of speed.
now as for actual franchises that would benefit from 3D, Gran Tourismo is my betting here, in fact i said to a buddy of mine when the last delay for GT5 was announced that it’s being held back to impliment 3D functionality (and to tie in with a bumper MOVE promo for Xmas, lame).
i can see i title like Time Crisis coming back and making good of both 3D and motion control.
to echo Anubis above there, puzzle games will be able to take advantage not only because the graphical requirements would make for easier 3D implimentation, but creatively they will open a whole lotta options up.
the rubik’s cube was invented to help problem solving in a 3D space and has just happend to become an iconic puzzle, but it wasn’t designed as a toy. imagine what echochrome could do with 3D graphics. personally i thought that was a pretty smart-assed game anyway but i think if anything the 2D display held back the creativity with that game.
i think a lot of people (yeah, you freaking guys at EBA!) underestimate just how creative people can be and that’s why there’s so much aprehension surrounding 3D on your part. personally, where as i was/am sceptical about motion controls, i think that married with 3D it will be the revolution that hardware developers are hoping it will be. i do get your point about crappy peripherals and i agree it could be a problem, but i just have confidence in the idea that not everybody is stupid.
just to finish off on a puzzle note: how much better does anybody think the “Hera’s Garden” puzzle in GOW3 could have been? personally it kinda blew me away as it is, had it been 3D i would probably be in a vegetative state right now after trying to solder my PS3 to my brain.
I think a game like Mike Tyson’s Punch Out would be really cool in 3-D. The depth would be really nice, and could maybe start a boom in first person fighting genres.
Especially with Natal and move on the way, Microsoft and Sony could try to make their own games like this before moving onto larger titles.
it seems beyond obvious to me that racing games will benefit the most by a mile with 3D technology, games like gran turismo, dirt 2, motorstorm, wipeout would look fantastic with 3d, i mean could you imagine the dirt from an off road racing game such as dirt 2/motorstorm flying up in your face!!!
could also see games such as super stardust and geometry wars looking absolutely mental in 3D
HELLO WIELDERS OF BLADES. after hearing this weeks battle cry i immediately thought of (what seems to be the current) dominating genre: SHOOTERS. and if you disagree with me lets take a look… MW2, Bad Company 2, Bioshock, Splinter Cell, Uncharted 2, Red Dead Redemption, Halo: Reach, the (finally) announced Gears 3, and even Mass Effect 2 could be included (i know that’ll get Daniel’s panties wet)….shall i go on? Anyways, i immediately felt shooters would benefit from 3D gaming by really immersing the player into the action. bullets or plasma beams whizzing by, grenades flying over your head, debris flying everywhere. AWESOMENESS.
But then i thought about Natal, and the Milo demonstration. THIS is where i think 3D gaming can actually get cool. Imagine in the Milo demo he were to ACTUALLY reach out to you when handing him the paper (seamlessly and unnoticeably scanning it in). Talk about immersion. So, i think Natal could ultimately benefit greatly with 3D. With that said, games that have RPG elements, or simply the act of just interacting with other characters, can be taken to a whole new level. Games like Mass Effect or Fable can really utilize this feature. It had been discussed with Mass Effect creators of possibly using Natal for involving you in interacting with characters. For instance, physically slapping them rather than pushing a button. Now with 3D, the basic idea could be reversed. What if the character pointed his finger LITERALLY in your face? The use of Natal and 3D could take gaming (and motion control) to the next level.
Hey axeheads! In my opinion, Natal and 3D together is pure WIN. I mean think about it. The ability to move objects around in 3D while examining them and applying them to puzzle elements could make any ‘casual’ game about 50 times more fun than they are now. The gestation of 3D and natal together, they’ll be able to name it something retarded like “Birth”. But still the possibilities of the two combined seem endless to me. I guess you could do it with that “move” piece of shit from sony but the idea of manipulating 3d with my bare hands is way cooler than doing it with a glowing dildo.
(Wat up my fellow tumbleweeds of anarchy, my hellraisers off…yeah fuck it im not stoned enough to say something funny)
First off i would like to say that i find 3D to be a pure gimmick at this point, to think that i might have to wear stupid glasses just to make the companion cube look like its closer to my face before i murder it is ridiculous (sad to say i’ll probably still cry like a bitch when it happens) I will accept 3D when it becomes a truly immersible experience that said i know that wont happen for quite a while so i will settle for what can be done currently for the sake of this cry, so to answer the question I will say 2D sidescrollers such as Castle Crashers and super paper mario can benefit from CURRENT 3D technology yea no holo-deck bad company fantasies here, this might be confusing but im sure some axe heads will understand what i mean, at this point the best 3D tech can make the character look like their a few inches out of the screen so you can quote un quote “touch them” a smart developer will understand the limitations of this technology and make it so this pop out effect ties into gameplay directly by adding more planes of gameplay which i will call 2.5D advanced Alpha super HD remix 64, basically what this could do would be like in super paper mario where you can go into the background but with 2.5D advanced Alpha super HD remix 64 there could be the foreground, background, middle ground, top layer, bottom layer whatever you want, is there a bottomless shaft in your way? well you could go to the background but theres another obstacle, by using advanced 2.5D tech you will realize theres another plane your character can interact with and low and behold theres a bridge on this plane that you can use
I just blew your effing mind didnt I?
well those are my thoughts once i sober up i’ll probably realize i sounded like a jack ass but whatever
My battle cry goes out to 3D point and click adventure games. Imagine a game like Myst or Monkey Island being played in 3D. You’d have to peek around tables or trees just to look for clues, and when you actually find something, just reach out with your hand (motion control implementation is crucial), grab the clue, and fit it into the puzzle. I think that there is no point to 3D technology without the evolution of motion controls. The only reason we have 3D is to heighten the immersion, and there’s no point in seeing into the world of the game without being able to reach into the game. And point-and-click adventure games are just perfectly setup for this sort of immersion since the player is mostly interacting with puzzle solving that involves the environment and being able to look into each crevices of the game world for solutions. 3D point and click, make it so!
My MBC is, sadly, not as positive as some of the others on here.
I dont think 3D is necessarily a gimmick. I believe that it is an addition to the visual experience and in that regard not intrinsically a bad thing. I personally dont think said addition is mind blowing or revolutionary in any way…… but thats just me.
People went apeshit over Avatar…. and come on… its going to be the same freaking thing when you watch your Blu-Ray at home later this month… stop acting like, well, basically my mom, by buying into all the tv hoopla and saying movies changed forever… especially as a gamer…!! We’ve ALL seen way cooler shit than this…. and 3D didnt add THAT much… I did feel weird when the blue chick got me kinda excited though… >.>
Anyway.. my real point is…. Im scared that the 3D thing will be USED as a gimmick, influencing the actual design of the games. If 3D is just tacked on to games in the form we have now… you know what…. go for it… again.. a simple addition, no problem there….
On the other hand.. if I start seeing games gratuitously sending shit towards my face like they do in Disney parks and Universal Studios just cause 3D is cool like that………. I’ll find some real life shit and throw it at their face…. they’re gonna want to dodge it too.
3D will be a gimmick…. if they turn it into one.
My battle cry goes out to new 3D tech leaving the gaming world well enough alone. In my experience with gaming, developers have not perfected the 3D archetype in games yet and it is getting more expensive to develop games as well. What makes devs think that adding this new 3D technology will help the production costs of video games low? We have just disscused many devs making 2.5 games as it is much easier to developproduce without sacrificing graphics, gameplay, and story.
Also with the recent boom of motion controls plus the advent of this new exciting 3D experience *sarcasm* can devs even keep up? I can see this potentially damage the hardcore audience more than help them, as I can see that devs will just make very cheap “casual” 3D games and leave the hardcore to drown, just like the wii…
I want my companies to stress less on budget concerns which constricts their creative freedom. Do not set a bar for them to reach like “you need motion contols” or “you need 3D”.
Im rooting for my champs 2k (bioshock), valve (orange box), and bioware(dragon age and mass effect). They have made great games without any of this fancy technology we all seem to crave now a days since its so new and flashy.
I find 3D technology in the gaming world too expensive atm and should be tested on the dvd/BR audience first.
Hello my agents of anarchy my distributors of dissonance, and fellow axeheads, how art thou?
My battle cry of the week goes out to a negative side of 3d gaming. People who wear glasses. I am half a point away from legally blind in my left eye and a point and a half away in my right eye. Sufficient to say I wear some really thick lenses on my glasses. The problem with 3d and my blindness is the fact that I have to wear my glasses, and than try to fit a pair of 3d glasses over them. Which I learned from avatar, that not only is it cumbersome and really uncomfortable, it gave me a migraine. True i could wear contacts and it MIGHT alleviate that problem idk.
The problem really lies in the fact that if the 3d trend takes off, people like me, who are unable to view things in 3d comfortably won’t be able to enjoy the big hit titles due to them only being available in 3d. And we the visually impaired gamer end up losing out on the full experience due to personal problems. This is a big concern for me since obviously my vision won’t get any better.
Holy wall of text batman!
My Battle Cry goes out to Super Mario Galaxy 2, cause I think it would work wonders in 3-d. That level of depth would really push the level design over the top, and since the graphics style is similar to that of a Pixar movie, I’m sure it would really fit right in.
Who doesn’t want Mario and Yoshi to fly out of the TV and around your living room during the star or flying section?
Battlecry time! *fires his six shooters into the air*
To be honest, I’m not that psyched about 3D either. Like motion control, it has potential, but you just know that only a small portion of the industry is going to utilize it well. On that topic though, what Brent said did strike a chord with me, because motion control plus 3D could equal something very very cool.
This brings me to my battlecry, which is going out to two games that I used to LOVE playing at my local arcades (when they were around), Police 911 and Mocap Boxing. They already had Natal like control schemes, where your head was tracked and movement was imitated on the screen, but throwing 3D into it wouldn’t just be a pretty visual upgrade, but would actually add to the gameplay.
I can’t count how many times I was playing Police 911 and would move my head around cover to get a better vantage point, but could never see around THEIR cover. With 3D technology though, I would be able to move around and spot that small piece of exposed enemy to shoot. Plus, being a game where you could dodge bullets, 3D would make for a pretty crazy trip.
So, I guess if I had to pick a genre, I’d say light gun games, because it would introduce a sense of freedom that could possibly be a breath of life into an aged genre.
The gaming franchises that would most benefit from 3D technology are first-person-shooter titles like Modern Warfare, Battlefield, Halo, Bioshock, etc.
The first person perspective already greatly increases the immersion of players into the game by setting the world in front of your eyes as if you were an actual part of the story. There are no character avatar shoulders to look over to remind you that you are simply controlling an artificial being. Instead, the obstacles and challenges come right at your face for you to deal with with your own (virtual) hands.
3D innovations would bring that immersion to the next level with a greater sense of depth and realism in the game surroundings. Coupled with surround sound systems, 3D gaming would help to create more intense playing experiences.
Imagine fighting across a war-zone, tracer rounds zipping past your head, artillery fire in the background, and an explosion rips the ground apart in front of you. Debris and shrapnel are hurled towards you, and with the 3D technology at work, I guarantee you’ll flinch every time.
I do not believe 3D technology has been developed enough yet to provide such a drastically more real and intense immersion, but it all has to start somewhere.
My Battle Cry goes out to IO Interactive, the devs of the upcoming Kane & Lynch 2 and specifically their fresh visual approach. In times like these, where the success of the current gen console generation slowed down the graphical progression of videogames, developers are finally able to explore new visual styles like the Dogma-look of K&L2, which just seems to work perfect in the context of this franchise and their raw and realistic characters.
I have nothing against 3D per se, I’m just a little worried that if it really hits big it will just be back to being bigger, shinier and (especially in the sense of 3D) IN YOUR FACEier. It might really add to the immersion of a game, but so does the aforementioned stylistic approach, if they can pull it off. And I’d rather prefer to see more of that diversity in the industry. A brown-tainted war shooter in 3D is still a brown-tainted war shooter, with the addition of brown things flying towards your face. AND I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOUR FECES, BOBBY! Thank You.
Hi People of the EBC
My EBC goes out to Xbox 360 System Link, since here in Brazil we do not have Xbox Live (which is a pity, because in my opinion it would be a very good market to Microsoft).
Anyway, lately most of the cooperative games (e.g. Army of Two 40 Days, Alien versus Predator, Battlefield 2, Modern Warfare 2) come only with CO-OP for Xbox Live, completely ignoring System Link. In the cases where it is included, only the versus mode is available – I am not saying that the versus mode of Modern Warfare 2 is not good, but…
This said it is my opinion that System Link should be more used by game developers, including CO-OP story mode (e.g. Gears of War, Borderlands or Halo 3), instead of only versus mode for the games to be launched.
Thanks and excellent show
Isn’t 3D without glasses basically a 2.5D game like Shadow Complex, but where you can move the camera by moving your head? If you think about it, 3DS is not going to have anything to do with 3D. Its’ whole innovation will be the little camera that tracks the movement of your head and uses that to move the camera. So when you move to the side, the camera sees it and moves the camera in a 2.5D game and you think “oh cool, it’s 3D.”
If you think about it even more, 3DS will be basically a less advanced Natal or Eye-Toy. This new 3D without glasses thing can be very easily implemented into Natal (and maybe even Move) and I expect a few games to take advantage of it but it will take that one crappy piece of software you know will come sooner than later for people to quickly figure out the trick and go “meh”.
I gotta be honest with you guys. Maybe its just that I’m to old school, but I don’t like it.
Its the same as with motion control. I am still (and probably wont be) not a fan of the tech.
And 3D gaming wont change anything for me either. Its like 3D movies. I get it, you get a little more depth perception but I don’t really care for it that much.
The price you pay for that (what seems to be) very little extra sensation doesn’t make me want to go all crazy about. I like it the way it is/was. Just as in the controls department.
Perhaps when the tech is more advanced that you don’t need to rearrange you whole household, or you don’t have to put on all kinds of extra gear to enjoy it. And it REALLY ADDS to the gaming/viewing experience. Perhaps then it might really be a viable tech to use and implement.
A game that I think would look great updated and in good 3D is Mario Clash for the virtual boy… I found that game a lot of fun and would benefit a lot from some good 3D not some headache induced bullshit of the virtual boy (Yes I bought one and I still feel the shame to this date)
My Battlecry goes out to the Battlefield franchise because since the demolition of this game is as awesome as Red Faction It would be probably awesome to see all the destruction in 3D and sh*t blowing up all on your grizzle
I think It’s awesome and kinda gives a cool effect and feeling to see sh*t blowing up out of your screen and might enhance your experience because you can see Bullets going to your way and while in a helicopter you see the Rockets more as it goes to your way,and maybe you can see an ATV coming your way and your just like “Holy F*CK!”and maybe even help on Identifying the environment
If there is any franchise/genre that would benefit the most from the 3D technology we use today, it would have to be anything in the first person. I mean, sure you could possibly do something like the 3D Wario on the Virtual boy and have a 3D side scroller (I would actually like to see a 3D LittleBig Planet) but think about the possibilities that would be possible in a three-dimensional first person game.
If its an FPS, imagine all of the debris that could fly at the screen at anytime from an explosion, or how cool it would actually look to get shot in the head by a sniper. Or if its a scary game (and I’m talking about a game in the style of the Grudge on the Wii), there are so many possibilities with shit popping out at you at any random moment that… hell that would scare me. Or combine the two together and whadaya get? A super-freaky F.E.A.R. 3! (I’m almost dissapointed that the game won’t be in 3D as of now).
The possibilities are endless: A 3D Breakdown 2 (I would about jizz my pants over that), a 3D Mirror’s Edge 2, Need for Speed Shift 2… IN 3D! hell… this might sound a bit biased (and as I am thinking of typing it out now, very debatable) alot of games, if they were to make the jump over to a first person view, and implement 3D effects into them, would just about grab my attention.
But once the hype of 3D simmers down some (I view it as a “flashy gimmick” for now), all those great games will just become regular games again… but in 3D; is that really a good thing? Not to mention the potential eyesore you can get from playing a 3D game over an extended period of time… the idea of 3D all of a sudden doesn’t sound that great to me.
Maybe if the occasional game pulls it off it’ll keep things in the industry interesting. But, as of now, I’m tired of all the 3D movies they are making when they really don’t need to be in 3D. Like Avatar, was 3D EVER nessecary in that movie? Not really, it was there to add an illusion of depth perception; while that may be cool for a while, its certainly not convinient for people who have to wear glasses over their glasses in order to watch the movie.
Ok… I guess to sum things up: 3D + FPG (First Person Games) = Happiness. Too much 3D = sadness/aggitation. And people who add 3D to media that won’t take full advantage of what they are using = idiots. Bottom line: Only use 3D if you are going to FULLY implement it into your media source.
Hope that this rant on everything 3D grabs your attention EBA.
Hello my Compañeros de Carnificina, my demons of debauchery, my brothers of brothel bashing…how art thou?
I think that 3D gaming would be a great adicion to a dying genre…the Survival Horror..I know you asked for series, but my favourite horror series (Silent Hill) is not doing so well this days.
Lest go back to F.E.A.R. 1, when your the vent crawling and Alma comes run againts you…THAT scared the crap out of me…now pictore the same scene in 3D…instant brown pants..then turn off PC..then..fetal position and a phobia of little girls.
The cool thing is that is would greatly better the puzzels. Looking over tables to see a crack in a wall, cheacking doors before opening and much more.
So in this axehead opinion (and by locking at the polls its a shared opinion) its Survival Horror that would benefit from 3D gaming, Left 4 Dead allready did it and it worked so just imagine F.E.A.R.3 in 3D.
PS:English is not my language so sorry for any mistakes.
PPS:I know that my Intro was corny.
PPPS:Check ou a series called Metalocalypse its awesome….and put some Legend of Zelda in the EBA Trax man
DEAD SPACE GAMING FRANCHISE, or any horror game for that matter (bioshock, fear).
Being surprised by an alien behind the dead bodies in the lab is one thing. but seeing that alien jump toward you with 3D technology would make every +60 persons heart stop, because you are seeing him jump out of the tv and screaming at you with hes big teeth while spiting hes green slim all over your helmet, hehe, you get alot more scared when you are in a dark silent room.
also, i have a question for you guys, do you think 3D tech will effect game rating? especially for horror ones, since they become more like real life events rather than “just a game”?
keep up the good work with EBA.
Hello to my Colossus of Clout!! (thats the best one I can think of…)
First time writer, long time listener!
My battle cry is going out to 3D gamin and which franchise would fit best. After some thinking, I came to the conclusion that MechWarrior or some type of mech game would be shibby with this! The first thing that comes to mind if you are in the mech itself and how the menus would come up during the battle (like Iron man and his interface) that would feel more like you are in the mech and ready to kick some arse!
And a big thanks to you guys for getting me through the week and all that u do! I know it can be hard…
thats wat she said…
Take care and good gaming!!!
Greetings from merry old england, the land of tea, biscuits and buttered crumpets.
My Battlecry goes out to Virtual Reality, 3d technology and motion controls both fall hand in hand as steps towards acheiving this pinacle of technology.
The ability to both view and control the game in a more immersive and realistic manner is what this trend strives to acheive, and SONY are closer then they think to REAL Virtual Reality.
During their tech demo of their upcomming Playstation Move, they showed on the TV the first person perspective of one of their ‘wands’ looking around within this small virtually projected enviroment infront of the camera sensor.
Now Imagine taking that control, and attatching its sensors instead to a headset, and then changing the display output from the TV to a pair of iWear glasses [or simular tech] capable of displaying an approximatly 40 inch HD, 3d ready screen infront of your very eyes, this would allow the player to actually see this virtual world as if they were in it instead of staring into a static box.
Non dependant on a TV you could set up in any room with space, and if they put a camera adjacent to the first [with mild calibration] the playstation would have a full 360 display of the player and the sensors, and Virtual reality is acheived.
This is entirely doable and considering the result worth forking out for a few additional peripherals.
Imagine a horror FPS, where one wand could be a flashlight, the other a gun and you can look around by simply moving your head as you would in real life in a full 360 enviroment, whilst being able to aim your gun and flashlight seperatly to where your actually looking, not forgeting surround sound headphones. It would be amazing.
I’m suprised Sony hadn’t picked up on this idea, It’s a shame I couldnt sell it =p but hey if they pick up on this I’d love a job in Game Design.
Love what you guys do, Long live EBA.
I personally think that 3D is like the ridiculous idea of Microsoft project natal, i dont want to have to wear something or wave my arms aroud to play a game, I would much rather sit on my bed after work with a pad in my hand instead of jumping around and then turn it off after 10 minutes because im exhausted. Games are not all about graphics, a game is nothing with out a awesome story and game play.
Thank you
i think the best genre that is going to benefit of the 3d technology, its the hack and slash games, we have all seen things like god of war 3 and we all know that the industry these days do amazing stuff, they make in every game more amazing a bigger bosses, there is alot of jumping climbing falling, and with 3d technology i think its gona be mind blowing to se kratos flying to kill a god. f*cking amazing!
‘Sup My laments of martyr, My children of meggedo, how art thou?
Well, now that my Brent is out.
My cry goes to Mario, since nintendo is always stepping up to the plate of innovation before everyone else, I’m sure MBS3D will ‘revolution’ized (DK is out) the industry. Besides galaxy already brings the feel of three dimensions to a point.
Does Tony even have a stereotype?
When it comes to 3D gaming, I think that the kind of 3D we have now is not something I want to have a lot of. I don’t want to wear glasses, plain and simple.
However, as technology improves, we will eventually see quality 3D that does not involve glasses at all, which also doesn’t have “sweet spots” that you have to be in to see it. This tech is still on the horizon, but I do want more of that kind of 3D, and I do think it will have a large place in the future of gaming.
That said, I also think it isn’t going to completely replace the 2D experience. 3D-Graphics ultimately didn’t kill 2D gaming, as we’re seeing 2D emerge again as a stylistic choice. 3D effects, no matter how great, will not replace older forms, but rather supplement them.
Oh, and I want my Holodeck, now please.
As for how it should be implemented, I think the Legend of Zelda Series would be a good case study in how it can be used properly. 3D platforming could be transformed by depth perception. Shooting Arrows using the Wii pointer could take advantage of the effect, and the puzzles could also be advanced through the proper use of 3D. On top of all that, I think that the sense of scale would be improved. Hyrule Castle would seem bigger, massive Dragon bosses would be imposing, and the ability to see them drawing nearer and farther as it flies around would be cool, and best of all, the plains of Hyrule would seem like a great open landscape with the sun setting in the distance. Of course other games, like God of War and Shadow of the Colossus would do an even better job with 3D to give the impression of scale, but I think Zelda is the best example because of the combat, platforming and puzzles that also are prominent in the game.
I am inclined to say that the MMORPG genre would be ridiculously (more) immersive if they ever adopted this technology. Think about it, WoW alone has 12mil subscribers becouse Blizzard managed to create a world so freaking immersive that most feel obliged to login every night and live in their alternate reality for a few hours. Imagine what this “alternate reality” would become if these sorry motherf*ckers ever get that game to be even more immersive?!
I Honestly, even being a hater of this new tec, do not believe that this is just a trend. We’ll probably see much more of this in the years to come.
I don’t like 3D, I don’t want to have to wear glasses, I don’t want to have to buy any extras to have it, and most of all I dont want cheap second rate 3D effects that probably blow ass.
If I were to choose a type of game that would go great with 3D, I’de have to say shooters, mainly because theres always something going on, be it exploding cars or bullets, grenades and knives flying at you, whatever the case, in shooters there is always something going on, which is why I think 3D would go great with them.
Little extra on the end, F.E.A.R. would go great with 3D… should have got that instead of John Carpenter, last time they have a game with a horror director it wound up being 5 hours of gameplay with no multiplay and zero replay value… sounds fun right?
id have to say for 3d gaming, the main targets would be action games, such as battlefield bad comapany 2, the game has me addicted because of how realistic it feels online, and it would just be amazing to see the explosions and bullets flying at you. i would also say modern warfare 2 but i feel it wouldnt be as immersive (im team battlefeild XD) other genre s i feel it would work with is as you stated the motion control, the idea of natal would be so effective, and could be achieved with amazing results if the developers dont cock it up. however as a film critic (mark kermode) said about 3d cinema, its just actually a gimic and i think it wont stick, this may turn out to be the same with gaming, i however could be wrong.
Hey guys have been a real big fan of the show now for a good while and usually agree with most opinions. however as far as 3d and this weeks battlecry i think you underestimate 3d’s potential to impact gameplay. though i do have to agree that as a whole it will be mostly implemented very gimmicky which worries me. anyways 3d gets me wondering about indie developer and indie styled game that may be able to really monopolize 3d and use it as a game play element. such as have multiple planes being stacked outward and inward and having some sort of different interaction between each. for more standard games that we see today such as for shooters and rand possibly some racers, have the HUD on a layered planes lowering the intrusiveness of the HUD but also increasing the amount of HUD items and usage. also ironically i think 2D game swill be really cool in 3D. i know this doesnt make sense at first glance but imagine a 2D platformer with differnt play depths available to move through each acting in 2D. sorta like little big planet or i think it was paper mario 2 or somthin along that line from nintendo the rapers of all that was once good in gameing.
I think the franchise that could most benefit from 3D displays is Metal Gear Solid. 3D gaming isn’t going anywhere quickly, and as I see it the only way to really boost gameplay with 3D is to combine it with head tracking.
The technology out there is kind of crappy right now, but games that don’t need to be particularly fast-paced with their use of head-tracking and shifting the 3D display along with it could work well. Peeking around a corner and pulling off a careful shot would be awesome with a 3D perspective that follows your head movement, even if we have to wear dorky glasses. “Police911″ had it right all those years ago on the arcade: motion tracking can work amazingly well to improve gameplay, but it has to be slow at this point, since the technology is imprecise and people aren’t good at it yet. Imagine if that game had used a 3D display: we’d still be playing it today, I’d bet.
To My Brothers of Digital Destruction, Archnemisi of Nemisi, Slappers of the Slap Happy- How art Thou?
All games will benefit from 3D technology equally. The true leap to expect is control integration into 3D playing environments utilizing true 3D space and holographic projections.
Reason being: Consumer video technology is rapidly evolving into a 3D standard. Current consumer technology currently offers conventional television to deliver 3D content. All games will benefit equally from this 3D standard with improved presentation.
The integration of controls will occur when holographic 3D projection becomes perfected and manufactured. Current R2-D2 style holographic projections have been achieved which in the near future could allow a physically interactive control environment within the hologram.
Imagine reaching into a playing field on a holographic RTS and actually grabbing and moving your units and issuing orders in a similar fashion. Or reaching across and pimp slapping your friend’s avatar.
With the recent talk of 3D gaming and also motion control it got me thinking. Apart from the Nintendo Wii, which to a certain extent is not considered a hardcore gaming system nor does it produce hardcore games, consoles have always failed to implement motion control and 3D into a support feature for the console or in fact even in one decent game. So perhaps Natal and PSMove are going to try and be big parts of their consoles or perhaps not.
The only way I see motion control and 3D becoming realistically accepted and wanted from gamers is by, in a more simple explantion of my thoughts: a game for the PSMove that would be a nazi zombe type senario however the player wears glasses with a monitor in so they are visually emerced in the game. okay now combine that with the fact that the PSMove controller allows you to almost 360 and still know which way your facing in game, this is going to allow you to be in a first person shooter, where all you can see is the screen infront of you and you have to physically turn around then point and shoot realistically while zombies are breaking in through windows or what have you. Now combine this with a Nintendo 3DS type screen so you got hands coming towards you and particles flying around as well as surround sound headphones, your almost fully emmerced into a game.
Okay you’ll look like and idiot and will probably be walking into walls and tripping over stuff but this is where I really see the future of games, yeh it will be ridiculously expensive and the moment but sci-fi has always portrayed the ‘player’ stepping into a suit and entering a virtual world, just look at avartar.
That’s just my point of view of the motion control and 3D gaming situation becuase I don’t want to spend a hella load of money on gimicky equipment that allows me to do some tacked on minigame functions or even play a ’3d supported’ game, I want the real thing or else just a gamepad or KB&M and a HD monitor please.
I think it is hard to pick a franchise at first when choosing what will benefit most from 3D. It is easier to first choose what genres will benefit most. First I would think that survival horror game will benefit greatly. Just think of this scenario. walking though a dim area when a slightly visible image materializes in front of screen in 3D. A good franchise from that genre would be fatal frame. The game is already about seeing slightly visible ghosts. Anything can benefit from 3d.
But let me go on a tangent on 3d as a whole. It is another technology, and like others it can be seen as a gimmick. I see that it has potential just like anything else. Who can say weather it is good or not until some software utilizes it. Motion control did have potential and it still does, but most people see it as bad because of all the shovelware that is in the market. Right now I am playing resident evil 4 on the wii and I am having a blast. being able to point where I will shoot allows for great control.
In conclusion I say that 3d has potential and survival horror will be a great genre to benefit from it.
you know what? rather than just wearing glasses in front of my TV… could i just wear a pair of glasses with a screen in each lens? oh, wait…
My MBC is that 3d has possibility if used correctly, think of a 3d forza combined with Natal that actually puts in the cockpit driving the car now how sick would that be
Hello my Brothters of Butchery my battle cry goes out to technology in video games. 3-D gaming is a prime example as it push mediums further than they have been pushed before. As far as games are concerned 3-D gaming will push visuals and the full imersion process that video-games are promising. Video games are also trying to revolutionize motion controls. I believe 3-D with motion controls will make perfect games letting the player experience game completely. Such as a fighter the charecters would pop right out and you could punch kick or just lash out like a maniac. Games have been pushing the envolope since they were created. As time went on they created more intellegent AI, better looking CGI and animations, let people use the internet to interact with others in a competitive manner, and many more. But what-ever the technology I believe that Video-games will make it their own and make their own better. Thats my battle cry and I hope video games keep trying new things with new things.
What would benefit from 3D?
Anything where a sense of depth would be beneficial.
3D Platformers. You’ve all been there, where you try to make a jump but have no clue as to how far away it actually is and fall into the bottomless pit?
First Person shooters. You ever throw a grenade but it falls short or you over shoot because you haven’t got an ideal sense of how far away your target was?
Driving games. Ever slam into the inside or outside corner because you couldn’t quite judge how far it was until the turning and got your braking wrong?
Beat em ups. Like streets of rage. I often couldn’t tell if I was at the same depth as the bad dudes and would end up punching air. Make a 3D version of the game and view it in 3D and you’re unlikely to ever be unsure of whether you’ll miss.
I say if a game is 3D, it can benefit the user by viewing it in 3D.
I don’t count 2.5D games in that, eg SFIV, shadow complex. Whilst they’d still look cool, there’s no benefit to stereoscopic vision.
One game I have played in 3D, because you don’t need dumb glasses to play, just the ability to cross your eyes, is Garry’s mod. There’s a stereoscopy command you can put into the console and having a sense of depth can make it much easier to build stuff without having to view it from multiple angles to make sure everything’s lined up.
To pick a specific franchise, it’d have to be super mario galaxy. It’d make it so much more natural and easier to judge if you can jump on a goomba or when to use the spin attack thing. Dammit why can’t they do a WiiHD3D über console!
Big fan of the show, and my battle cry for 3-D technology goes out to Nintendo for the Metroid Prime franchise. Those games expertly immersed the player into the game with the visor effects and intuitive controls, and I think that including this technology would enrich the experience. The franchise made great use of the first person perspective and I think it would be super cool for both the combat and platforming to have this 3-D effect added. The footage that has been released for Metroid: Other M has really made me want to see this kind of effect implemented in a game. P.S. how perfect would it be for the visor effects since you might have to wear glasses to make the game have the 3-D effect.
My Member Battle Cry goes out to the survival horror genera of games. Those games are all about atmosphere and submersion and 3D would help solidify the experience. It would allow the player to literally be drawn into its world and interact with it in a new way. I would like to see the new Wii game Calling with 3D and I could see Silent Hill: Shattered Memories improved with 3D as well.
I think that to implement the 3D technology to be more than a gimmick in the game, it almost has to be first person. Whats the point of 3D in a third person action game? Well sure, you can see Nathan Drake’s ass in 3D (I’d buy it), but its gotta be more than that. There is probably going to be a Modern Warfare 3D, seeing as Activision has already decided to do everything they possibly can do destroy the franchise.
The franchise I would love to see implement 3D technology would be games like FEAR and games similar. Think about walking around a corner and Alma is right in your face in 3D, I would brick myself!
I actually think that 3D is a big waste of time. We all saw Avatar in 3D and it looked awesome. We therefore assumed that any movie or game would look equally good if its in 3D too. The sad fact is that Avatar looks awesome because it’s a CGI marvel not because it comes with glasses. 3D has come and gone before and in it’s current state I don’t think it’ll last
My 3 D-licious battle cry goes out to RTS games. I think that implementing 3D into an RTS could greatly affect the game play by adding different altitudes of play, instead of having a game board-style of play. For example fighting on a mountain could have a lot more depth which players can take advantage of to carry out their strategic master plans. Additionally flying units could really be seen as flying and not hovering 2 cm above the ground. Imagine launching a nuke and actually see it come out of the screen and fly to the enemy’s base. Explosions will also look supaaa sweeeet!!! And for last, the battles will just look EPIC with units fighting each other at different altitudes and having units shoot rockets and bullets out of the screen. It would be like a massive midget massacre!!!!….. I like midgets.
I think the gaming industry has to be very careful with 3D technology, so that it does not become a gimmick attached to what otherwise would be a very poor game. A good example of this would be the movie industry today, some movies are excellent when paired with 3D (Avatar) and others make you feel like…huh? Why did that need to be in 3D? (Alice in Wonderland for example).
FPS shooters and racing games would benefit the most from 3D effects, and pretty much any action game. I don’t see RPGs being that great with this technology, unless it’s a first person RPG. Let’s hope in the future we don’t see a 3D sonic… god I just got sick even thinking about that one.
Ok so my battle cry goes to seeing a 2Dish metroid on the 3DS (basing miself on that dsiware 3D thing), now I know it might seem wierd at first, but think about it for a second, you could have a hidden missile expansion for example that could only be obtained by finding the right symbol on the screen by physically moving the ds around (like in the dsiware app where you had to find letters). But that’s just one example, there could be so many different puzzels that use this technologie. Nintendo always innovates with their metroid games and i think this could be really cool if done right (and not used as just a gimmic throughout the whole game).
Oh and the username is pronounced jay not dee-jay-ee (yeah we french people always have to pronounce everything wrong lol).
My member Battle Cry goes out to the length of games. Things are getting ridiculous right now from where I’m standing. People who have been gamers for longer than I, do not seem to notice this trend but GAMES ARE GETTING SHORTER AND SHORTER! I remember when games got lower scores for having a 12 hour campaign! I’m Asian! I can get through that in 6! Splinter Cell I heard was a 5 hour campaign! I know that creating games is getting more costly now a days but look… Us gamers PAY 60 DOLLARS for this stuff… we don’t cough up $10 hit and then get done with it! This isn’t the movies, we want something to sink our teeth into! Thats why I save my hard earned money for things I know will give me my dollars worth of 20 hours or more gameplay like the GTAs or the Mass Effects (which even go over the 30 hour mark)
My battlecry would go to the possibilities that this technology would bring. I have always dreamed of a videogame like Star Wars: The Old Republic (an interactive MMO with actual voice dialogues) that could be established as an augmented reality experience. I don’t think 3D gaming is the only piece that is needed to build this puzzle, but the industry is slowly building on that concept by implementing things like the motion controllers or infrared sensor cameras. It would be such an interesting experience to actually explore a vast virtual world inside your own home. Maybe even use it to ‘go’ to places in the real world (Angkor Wat, Stonehenge, deep sea)… and to make this even more out of the box it would be awesome to ‘visit’ these emulations in different time periods (imagine actually going to the Renaissance period in Florence).
I enjoy your program quite a bit and thank you for the discussions of every week.
The genre which would benefit the most from 3D implement into their games would be the Adult genre. Imagine your sexual fantasies in full 3D. It almost becomes better than the real deal. It is such a shame that the adult video game industry is so unexplored. With new technologies such as Natal and 3D its hard to believe it wouldn’t do well. Espically adult materials are extremely popular.
I think that the horror genre of gaming would benefit from 3D gaming as it (kinda) did for movies back when 3D was originally used. Even though I dislike them I think rail shooters mostly on the wii like dead space extraction and the resident evil rail shooters would maybe give more effective scares with 3D technology. Then on PS3 and 360 with games like again dead space, F.E.A.R or original horror games with 3D in mind especially with the use of surround sound as I think that makes a 3D experience even better.
Hello fellow Axewielders!! To preface my battle cry, I must first say that I seriously hope all 3d games have the option to go to 2d because 3d effects can be somewhat overwhelming. Combine that with the ridiculous amounts of time that I spend playing games like Mass Effect, God of War, and Uncharted and I’m headed straight for seizure city.
Nonetheless, I think that the perfect genre to implement 3d in is with survival horror. Imagine the village sequence in RE4 in 3d with zombies literally coming out of the screen at you or in Dead Space with the necromorphs charging at you, blades dangling in front of you. Not only do I think that this would up the fear factor for these games but also be a practical implementation of the technology, allowing the player to experience, with greater clarity, the essential frightening atmosphere and environment of any great survival horror. If I was able to walk past life like, gore piles knowing that that might happen to me or see some twisted machinations of a diabolical arch enemy, they would enrich the gameplay experience.
Of course this is all dependent on a good 3d system so, here’s to hoping.
My battlecry goes to how much 3d sucks for me. I was born with a lazy eye, and even though I see as good as the next guy (with glasses) I am immune to the 3d visual illusion. This is because my eyes work independently making me perceive depth in a different way from most humans. When I go watch a 3d movie I put the glasses on and just see a normal movie (thats and extra 3 quid well spent). If 3d gaming becomes standard I will be left out, not knowing what all the fuss is about. And if it turns out that 3d becomes implemented in a crucial way into games i may be unable to play them. I hope that even if 3d becomes standard, normal games will still remain for people like me to play them. I am pretty sure however that 3d is a fad, in movies and games alike. Many people get headaches from it and many more don’t really care. What really matters is good game-play and good stories, I don’t think you need 3d for that.
Im sorry but I think this is complete BS! The “3D” movement is a fad, It’s been proven that “3d” puts a strain on your eyes, TV’s with 3D now have to have Warning labels on them telling you how long tern use of them is bad for you. Doctors and scientist talk about how “3D viewing” can make people nauseous, vomit, cause headaches, dizziness, make you go blind quicker, but the gaming and movie companies all want people to start buying into this all over again. It died in the 80-early 90s and it should stay that way. It adds nothing to gaming, the quality of games will not improve due to it’s addition to games, I just dont get it… I dont see a reason to put on those geeky glasses to play a real game or buy a new TV just to play “3d viewing” games. I just bought a new TV. It’s a 46in LED. It runs on 40% less power than a LCD, it’s brighter and has more vibrant colors than a LCD at only a in thick. Why do I need to upgrade again? I wont. All 3D games better run without it as well or Im done with gaming! I’m still waiting for all games to run at 1080P that come out, so why are we worried about 3d viewing all the sudden?! Sony: Please cut the BS out of my future gaming. Thank you. Once again 3d viewing adds nothing to gameplay or design. Oh look the water is splashing out of my television!!!! EWWW! AAAH! Give me a break…
my battlecry goes out to natal, funnily enough. In my opinion 3d technology is not enough on its own to pass the bar and not be a gimmick. but with technology that is (supposedly) on its way to xbox you can truly see its potential with natal.
As shown in EBC this week with the wiimote headtracking, natal could do this all with no extra peripherals, which was another thing that was pointed out during EBC.
I think a whole new range of interactivity could be found from this through interacting with objects in a 3d plane rather than just seeing things further away from or closer to you.
AND, with the ongoing advances in television technology, we could see this work with a ‘splitscreen’ where other people can be headtracked at the same time and see what you’re seeing at a completely different angle.
I know it seems a long shot for this to happen, but COME ON! this would be awwwwwweeeessommmmmme
I think that flight genre would benefit from 3d the most.
It would be awesome to fly a small plane in some flight simulator watching the clouds and Earth with depth almost as if you were flying as a free bird. It could be like those dreams where you fly up through the sky and just relax.
Dogfights would probably be great also. Imagine rockets flying near you or parts of a destroyed plane going out of your screen. Furthermore, doing all those vertigo inducing stunts… That’d be great!
I think the game that would most benefit from 3D technology is Mirrors Edge. for the longest time, platforming in first person games has been a major problem because the first person perspective makes it extremely tough to judge your jumps correctly. Mirrors Edge is, in many ways, a firs person platforming game. It’s gameplay is centered around jumping. With a fully 3D perspective, you can look at the jump from angles never seen before and it should, in theory, make it much easier to judge your jumps correctly
Hello my doctors of destruction, my professors of pulvorization! How art thou!
My battle cry goes out to FPS games in general. I am a huge fan of games such as Bioshock (favorite game ever), F.E.A.R., and Half-Life which are games that have a reputation of just absorbing you into the experience and making feel like the character you’re playing as. Just imagine what 3-D graphics could do to the sense of atmosphere. F.E.A.R. 3 would be so much creepier and scarier especially with 3-D John Carpenter scares. Call of duty could bring you that much closer to the battlefield and really drive home those explosive moments the franchise is known for. This may just be me but the depth of your character’s arms/weapons has never felt right to me and not only could 3-D fix the problem but it could make the game much more immersive.
At the end of the day I just thought an FPS was an obvious choice considering FPS games and 3-D technology are both meant to immerse the player so if they work together correctly they could make one memorable gaming experience.
us’up guys my battlecry goes to star fox that game in 3D would be ossum imagine destroying enemies ships and all the pieces blowing in to your face, asteroids passing, ships coming from the background jumping out of the screen, it looks to me like the perfect implementation for 3D, and also FPS and racing games
oh and that was a great intro for the show Brent singing was amazing sound just like eddie lol.
PS: WTF happen with singularity and alien colonial marines are they dead?, please say no.
First off I agree that this new 3-D tech is somewhat a good/bad idea. When first introduced on the market the world will love this new aspect of gaming. Game developers will hear this and might focus more on visuals than user interface, or worst, gameplay. Back on subject, the horror franchise would benefit the most from 3-D. Think about it. The point of this franchise is to use what you see combined with your head to save your A$$ (in RE4′s case, your butt and a girl more useless than wild dog).As for the game, HAS ANYONE HERE EVER HEARD OF FATAL FRAME SERIES(not any game posted here is entirely a bad idea). If you haven’t just think of Silent Hill meets Pokemon Snap. I mean the game just gives you a camera(the only weapon in the game also no tripod included to beat crap with) to defeat ghost, zombies, and demons. To win this game you need(besides a friend or a blankey to hide under)the real 3-D view to peer corners and etc.
Anyone feels like we are getting to close to a 4-D or 5-D space only to discover that we ourself are a videogame that is going to be deleted due the game A.I (us) getting too smart for the player to play aginst.
-Star Ocean 3 till the end of time reference people.
Long time listener, first time posting, it’s about your last couple of topics, 2d & 3d gaming and a few skirmish ago you talked about the original XBOX live shut down. Anyway if been playing original xbox games at the moment (most are dead part from halo 2 online) and just to say some games like project gotham racing 2 have aged pretty bad, so i plugged my mega drive in (Genesis for you septic’s), and played some sonic 2, 3 and knuckles (and a few other), all just as I remember great. So my question to you guys if 3D gaming comes the normal, do you think in lets five years time we will able to go back to something like mass effect 2 (which all enjoy now, some to much) and enjoy as much as we did when it first came out.
My Battlecry of the Week goes out to one of the most important aspects of good gaming: Immersion! With games similar to Fallout and Heavy Rain or F.E.A.R (just examples of the top of my head, no perticular listing), engagement in story and characters is key. One of the main ways that this is achieved, is by using atmospheric effects(lighting, weather etc)! Since 3D is all about stepping up the visuals (as discussed in the show), this would go towards making a greater atmospheric depth. Therefore, 3D should be applied, where graphics actually create a significant bond between player and game, and where this effect could be substantially increased by use of 3D. As mentioned in the show, the effects of 3D on gameplay seem to be minimal, unless paired with motion controls etc, so developers should use it where it really matters. This way, the feared gimmickry (even a word?) will be minimal, and 3D will do a sincere effect on gaming!
Oh, and off the record. The Dead or Alive franchise needs 3D, Nao!
Hello guys.My BattleCry Goes to the company from Poland Techland (creators of Call of Juarez,Chrome etc.).They opened a webpage called QuestMaster. On this page you write your quest script on one of three categories: horror quest, fantasy quest and sci-fi quest. If you willbe the lucky one, you’ll given a job in Techland.Ofcouse for ich place they will give rewards:video carts, procesors, games and more…Now you can think:”Wow it’s fantastic!”.But,NO,it isn’t!!!They fucked up the vote system…So if you vote 10 times(you can vote only 1 time in day),you’ll recive a special reward from Techland(maybe a game).Imagine, how many 10 years old kids vote for random quests?Ofcose they don’t read quests, they just need a reward…Oh,yes,Techland make a button, called “lucky hit”,it’s chose random quest(GENIUS!!!).From monday(19th)the webpage will be updated, and ich new quest will recive 3x more votes.GENIUS!!!P.S. I apologize for my English.
I was sitting, waiting to comment the 3d tech, when brent took my words right out of my mouth, i was gonna say the same thing, the cool thing would be a game wich implemented both 3d and motion controlls in perfect harmoney. i was even gonna post a link to the head tracing vid. Picture this: it’s a fps, your head and motion controller is traced, so the screen and weapon addjusts in relevance to your head, the weapon is in your hands, kinda, it looks like it anyways, and the weapon follows your controller 1:1, with some weight and rumble effects on the controller, the shooting would be awsome. You might need a big screen for this to work, but wouldn’t it be great??? after all the 3d and motion stuff we’ve seen lately, i don’t think it would be soo hard to pull of. sry for my shitty english, im norwegian;)
ps. DK$ never stop with the puns, they are teh awsum!
Sup Axelords,
my battlecry goes out to Sony. Fuck you, Sony. The new firmware update removes the function to install another operating system and, get this, if you don’t install the software, you can’t connect to PSN.
Goddamit, I bought a piece of hardware that was supposed to do certain things. Its supposed to allow me to play games on or offline and, if I felt like installing another operating system, I could have done that too. Those were the terms of the agreement I made with Sony when I shelled out 500 bucks for their piece of shit system.
They can’t hold my online experience hostage just so they can remove a function that I paid for MONTHS ago. I’m not gonna beat around the bush here, if they’re gonna turn my PS3 into a PS3 Slim, I want to be compensated for the cost of devaluing my hardware.
Hey there fellas long time listener first time battle crying!
My epic battle cry goes out to a previous topic music in games, not the score (which are awesome) but the actual music itself like from games such as the GTA series the Scarface game and so on. I think the inclusion of music from different genres is an underestimated thing as unlike games such as Rock Band where you pretty much know what you’re getting these games introduces gamers to music they might have not listened to (especially younger players), by just cruising around Liberty City etc. This also helps the artists that allow these games access to their music and it creates a whole new audience for them. For example I never heard of Megadeth till Vice City (I was 15 at the time…and kids wait till your 18 till you can play GTA) and now I’m soo stoked to be seeing them at this year’s download.
Thanks for reading.

You guys rule!
And remember cry havoc and….rock out with your cocks out!
I think that Mech Warrior would be awesome(or any huge mech game)if you combined 3D tech with Natal. The 3D Imagery could shoot out a HUD interface that you would then manipulate using the natal function. I think thats how 3D would be most effective, I mean why would it come out of the t.v. if you cant try to touch it? Its also the right combination for DK’s porn needs.
