Raise your glasses, raise your horns, raise your voices! Welcome back Axeheads, its another week of blistering commentary this week on EpicBattleAxe.com and the subject at hand is your reaction to the Tokyo Game Show. This week, the Axehead Army checks in for the win, picking the wheat and chaff of TGS 2010.
Today’s Member Battle Cry goes to a title that there are no shortage of opinions on. Causing everything from raised eyebrows, cautious optimism, to self inflicted stab-wounds (so we’re told), the debut of Ninja Theory’s Devil May Cry reboot has cast the gaming world to the hounds of calamity. Today’s MBC comes from Ichi-nii, who passionately, but fairly, makes the case that if there’s a clue at the center of the universe, Capcom is on the planet its farthest from.
Ichi-nii Says:
My Member Battle Cry goes out to Devil May Cry, that of Hideki Kamiya which pioneered the gameplay of Extreme Combat, and achieved notable success and mainstream attention corroborated by its replication in many other well known video game franchises.
My Battle Cry lacks much praise, but is instead one of serious lament at the reveal of Capcom and Ninja Theories newest entry into the franchise, an unnecessary re-boot/reimagining of a series that was positively recognized for its hyperbolic Anti-Hero Lead character and again unique form of action/adventure gameplay.
With this development Capcom have proven that they truly DO NOT understand their own franchise, why it possess a strong following despite its inconsistent quality between its quadrigeminal installments, and in just one move have potentially alienated and disenfranchised a massive chunk of the core audience and fans.
The perception of the series, as presented by Ninja Theory in DmC, is just unfamilar and quite honestly evokes feelings of Fear more than eagger anticipation and excitiment for another installment.
They have reduced Dante’s introduction and origins, the lore of the Dark Knight Sparda, told to us through the very original Devil May Cry 1, to nothing.
They have reduced Dante’s rejection then gradual acceptance of his heritage, the mourning of his sibling to the darkness, the awakening of his own sense of Justice, conveyed to us through his personal journey in Devil May Cry 3, to nothing.
They have reduced the Heroism of Nero, whose struggle to save his beloved Kyrie, which epitomized the Dark Knight Sparada’s own compassion to Humanity and ability to Love regardless of his Demonic origin, as witnessed in Devil May Cry 4, again to nothing.
Capcom have essentially to ever passionate DMC-Fan of the Hideki Kamiya vision of Devil May Cry, stabbed in the gut, and in a soft whisper only they can hear said, ‘Fuck You’ before renching the metaphorical sword from their chest and leaving them in a big pool of blood symbolizing betrayal and sorrow.
Capcom have shown that they will not listen to us, that they dont recognize our opinons and feedback (essentially our voices), but above all that they do not care about us the fans and the community who really Loved that incarnation of Devil May Cry.
I wish Ninja Theory all the best with this project, they could potentially prove me wrong and take the series to places I never imagined, I know as developers that they care for strong stories and good characters as they emphasise with their Enslaved game, but they could manifest my greatest Fear with this re-imaging of a conception that honestly already worked.
Thanks for hearing me out and sorry for posting this cry in the wrong MBC before.
End
Thank you, 1-2-san (or chan as the case may be) for giving voice to what so many gamers are undoubtedly feeling in the wake of the DmC reveal trailer from TGS. Errrr….I liked the trailer. Dante was always a bit of a dick IMO, this looks a little more serious. The music and graphics in the trailer look were good, looks like the same old game play with a few new tricks. Dante looks a little like a male prostitute, but who doesn’t? I only played through the first 2 games and wasn’t really interested in the series anymore, but cause of this trailer…..I am.
Fuck everyone who doesn’t agree with my opinion and a few of those who do as well.
why the hell did DmC needed a reboot!
Everyone will most certainly buy the game after this little stunt.
Why reboot? Because franchise was dying and they can’t live only with hardcore fans. Also it’s not the hardcore fans they need to please but the average gamer. Hardcore fans for every franchise are minority.
Capcom also acknowledges that they need to change something to sell more games in western market. Don’t know if this will be for the best but for me new Dante looks better than old one. It looks more serious and grittier and that’s what I love in games.
I agree with this, the franchise honestly didn’t need to be rebooted as the original already worked on its own, though perhaps this can prove to be good after all? I wouldn’t know as this game is honestly not on my radar to begin with.
You’re getting the heat
already rated -3…i guess most fanboys just wanna read “WTF! Why the DMC reboot?”
CRY HAVOC!
I could live with a change in Dante design if it weren’t for the fact that one of the freaking designer of ninja Theory decided to replace Dante with a model of himself.
That’s a right only designer and/or members of the team of their own franchise should have, note a narcissist guy from an outsourced company, and is a decision that most of the time is taken from game 1 and carried till the game death.
What would people think if suddenly Nintendo decided to outsource The Legend of Zelda franchise and one of the outsourced designer decided to change Link for a bulky bald dude with a beard and plate armor?
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3181535
So, apparently, Dante would be laughed at in the Western world. Sorry, but I think I’d laugh more at the new Dante.
I don’t mind a reboot, but I do mind playing as the biggest douche in videogame history.
In an interview, Capcom said that one of the reasons they rebooted the series is that they want bigger sales. DMC4 sold 2.7 millions, and they want more.
I wonder what will they do, if the new DMC doesn’t do better? And if they lose a lot of core fans, it is possible, since I think they will lose more players than they gain.
well, in previous generation you had to sell about 30k to start to get profit (can’t remember developer who said this on interview). This generation actually is really hard to get profit and 2.7 millions is quite low for multiplatform game. For example first DMC got the same amount only on ps2 and you can’t really compare developement costs then and now. Difference is huge.
I like Ichi-nii am a big DMC fan and I just wanna say whoa man, reduced to nothing? That’s a little much don’t ya think? Those games are still there and the original story with them. Whenever something new is done with an IP that hardcore fans disapprove of they act as if everything that came before won’t exist anymore.
Who’s to say that Sparda and Virgil have bee scrapped anyway. That trailer (like any good announcement trailer should) gave us very little to go off of story wise. It gave us the hero’s face, told us who he is, and showed him kickin a little demon ass with his cool new sword.
I personally can’t wait to see what Ninja Theory has done with DMC. Heavenly Sword while short was a great action game with some cool characters and fun as hell combat. Not to mention the fact Enslaved is lookin’ fantastic as well. I have a feeling these guys know what they are doing when it comes to crazy action games.
Also Nero was a bitch.
Thank You Epic Battle Axe for letting me be heard.
They just posted Interviews with Ninja Theory Director Tameem Antoniades and a Capcom Representative on Gametrailers and IGN.com respectively.
Those interviews were a big opportunity for them to try and alleviate the DMC Community’s Fears with this re-envisioned reboot.
And in my opinion, from those interviews, they just made those Fears grow.
Tameem doesn’t seem to understand the essence of the franchise, his notion of DMC’s cultural impact holds some weight, but this ambition to make DMC modern, this potentially detracts from a key characteristic of Devil May Cry.
And that’s Fantasy.
DMC is a Universe of Fantasy; it’s not grounded in any solid realism, Dante’s prior portrayal, the gothic environments, Heaven and Hell, the occultism and mythos made the DMC Universe seem natural in its own right.
DmC feels like it could suffer from its attempt to modernise the series.
The inclusion of a Government Agency (The Young Offenders Rehabilitation Program as mentioned in the TGS Trailer) for the first Time in DMC insinuates this much, this Agency will possible be sending all manner of crazy contraptions and imitation conjurations to stop Dante.
However, the Agency will only serve to shift focus away from DMC’s staple enemy which were Demons from Hell, and erode much feeling of genuine fantasy in DMC’s World rather making it feel artificial.
Tameem’s comments about Dante sound ignorant, most especially on the IGN Interview, his comments about Dante being Young expose the fact that his probably only played DMC 3 and ignored the others.
Tameem’s comments about Dante portraying disenfranchised youth, implies that Dante could be a more scornful, a more angry and vengeful character, but corroborates the significance of the Government Agency as they could be focus of those feelings.
Sounds like Kratos and the God of War series when you think about it, the TGS Trailer when Dante stubs his cigarette into that Demon, while badass just felt nasty and mean-spirited which Dante isn’t.
A serious change of demeanour for the lead character.
A players Time with Dante is unique, when you first battle Phantom, have a brawl with Vergil, or take on the Savior.
You feel Superhuman, you feel Powerful, and you felt like a Hero.
Dante’s cocky, hyperbolic attitude complimented DMC’s over-the-top stylish gameplay, and enhanced the feeling of the player as Powerful, therefore this potentially solemn Dante, and Tameem’s comments of developing DMC’s combat from the ground up are truly frightening as a result.
They could take away from that feeling players had in past instalments.
The Government Agency, Dante’s character change, and who knows what else convey that DMC’s past identity is gone.
Now I understand these changes are to make DMC fresh as they say in those interviews, but with Tameem’s references to disenfranchisement and youth movements, Dante expressing himself in violence, those descriptions feel like excuses to potentially bring DMC closer to God of War.
I asked myself these questions after watching those interviews.
Did Ninja Theory and Capcom calm the Fears of DMC-Fans?
Does it feel like a completely different Game or potential God of War clone?
Will this potential lack of DMC’s prior identity allow hardcore DMC-Fans to Love DmC the sameway as prior instalments?
Will it just End up as another DMC 2 that Fans will be quick to slip under the rug?
I honestly want to say ‘no’, ‘yes’, ‘no..not will all this change and visionary crap’ and ‘yes’, but I’m trying my best to give this Game a chance and allow Ninja Theory to show me what made Dante and Devil May Cry cool again as Tameem says, I’ll just continue to watch DmC closely…ever so closely.
erm… i get that he’s upset but devil may cry isn’t freaking othello. they’re taking what is honestly a preposterous story about demons, half demons and all sorts of other crap. and scrubbing it. as long as the gameplay is the same and dante eventually gets his white hair, i wont see a problem, in fact even if he doesn’t get the hair. all i need from dmc is for it to remain a stylish action game.
I personally don’t get this whole idea of a reboot.
The only reason I can think of for rebooting a franchise is because people loved the original game(s) and it was impossible to continue said game because, for example the story had come to a conclusion. This way you create a new opportunity to tell a story, using characters that people already like or have some feeling with.
What I don’t get is why you would reboot something, hoping to pull in people that aren’t onboard already? Why wouldn’t you just make said game and call it something else? I know the big argument is gonna be, “well, it takes less time and less money to re-imagine something, than it would to create a new and original idea”. My question is, does it really? Are all the games we see now so different and original? Are we not calling every single action/adventure game that uses 2 button combo’s and an upgrade system a “God of War clone”?
I think Ninja Theory’s time would be better spend making an entirely new game. Can it still be “like” Devil May Cry? With the high speed action and the demons and what have you…. sure. Just call it “Bayonetta” (see what I did there). This way they don’t have to live up to all the expectations, they don’t have to worry about stepping on anyone’s toes, they can just make a game and hopefully a good one at that.
Devil May Cry….looks like he might.
I thought it looked good… Better than the previous ones. So good even that it makes you wonder “is this really a Devil May Cry game?”.
I hope he doesnt talk poo-poo like in 4 because real people talk shit, not poo-poo. Wah waa wee wii wee?
The new Dante is not too cool looking with that dark hair style, but to be honest I think he is better looking than tha first cause he was just a generic japanese character(completely forgettable appearance)The new one at least looks more real.In the end what I care about is the gameplay and story – those are the building blocks of a long and memorable franchise.Whether the new DMC will deliver on that is yet to be seen
I’m actually surprised that anyone cares about the story of DMC or what Dante looks like. If ever there was a franchise that stood on the strength of it’s gameplay despite how laughable the story it’s wrapped in is, I would think it’s DMC. I remember watching the recap screens during DMC4′s installation and thinking that it sounded like something written by an entire 8th grade class that was promised that everyone’s best ideas would be included. Honesty, I don’t think that DMC ever had a story. It simply had exposition verging on gibberish and contrived plot devices to facilitate the transition from one over-the-top set piece to another. At least with the reboot there is a chance to add a little substance to all that style.
As for Dante himself, I don’t think that there’s anything remarkable or interesting about him that isn’t based in gameplay. Seriously, when one of the most important features of a character is their hair color you have to accept that you’re dealing with something pretty damn simplistic. Maybe if Dante were more grounded within the fantasy world he inhabits I’d feel differently but in the end it’s really just an excuse to juggle a few more enemies and raise a combo count.
To me, DMC is about deep, frenetic combat and bizarre, highly-detailed enemies. From the trailer that’s been released I don’t see how much has changed.
While I can relate to fans’ mixed reactions to the trailer, Ichi-nii seems to be reading WAY too much into so little information.
Where are all these accusations of disregard for the series’ origins coming from? His emo haircut? I’ve been a DMC fan since the first game and besides the questionable new look for Dante where else has it fallen so far from the source material? The action, Gothic setting, and enemies don’t look too far from what we all remember. Imagine for a second you never saw this trailer before and the character skin was replaced with a more familiar looking white haired Dante or Nero. Would anyone be noticing such a terrible difference and accusing the game from going way off base?
I personally believe this trailer is suffering from Raiden syndrome. The setting, story, and gameplay may be what we all remember, but there is a disconnection because the character we vicariously experience the world through has been changed. Once you have become THAT character which you have experienced the DMC, Halo, or MGS universe from it’s hard to imagine a game without them or someone similar. To us Solid Snake IS MGS, Dante IS DMC, and Master Chief IS Halo. Unless the new character delivers the same feel of the original it simply doesn’t feel like the same game anymore. Case in point, Nero was a completely different character than Dante, but since he had the exact same look and personality as Dante no one cared. But now Dante has a different look and seems even less like DMC than Nero. Same with Big Boss in MGS3 as opposed to Raiden. Once you become these characters, their personality affects the entire way you experience the game.
Sadly enough, this game could potentially end up delivering some of the best gameplay and story of the entire series and be met with mixed emotions because Dante looks like sunlight makes him crap diamonds and cry.
I personally think the new DMC needs to reboot the gameplay to differentiate itself from the other hack ‘n slash titles like GOW and Ninja Gaiden and push the genre forward.
And this is what happens when people start flipping out over a freakin’ CGI trailer that delivers very little of what the game is really about.
Hmm it’s weird as someone who has had only a passing interest in the DMC series, I actually really liked the trailer for the reboot, it just looks a bit more intriguing than “generic muscular badass with trench coat kills demonic hell beasts” I know DMC is probably more than that but that’s just my perception of it from past trailers and game-play clips. I guess people aren’t making distinctions between punk and emo anymore as this new Dante, to me at least, is much more of the former.
I find the press thing saying they wanted to make it more appealing to the west. They out source to ninja theory a company that made Heavenly Sword.A kung fu sword fighting game and Enslave. That base on journey to the west.An old Chinese fable. To me that like Germany hiring the history channel to do a documentary on the invasion of Poland.Ok fine west mean a 5 hour boat ride now.I don’t personally think the game it self will be bad.It just the design that bad.First off go watch the trailer again.Look careful and you see he do have some white hair.Seem to be frosted though. Can anyone honestly defend that?
I will agree Dante was never the best design character but this look like they went in to a high school and ask a kid to try to be cool. This mean he have to smoke cause every one know to be cool you have to smoke.I’m find it ok to reboot it.Although not needed.I find it fine to redesign Dante some but to say this is suppose to appeal to me is just an insult to my sense taste.I pray that music is only for the trailer to.
I’m really surprised this was the battlecry.. No need to say anything else because everyone has decided what they think about this game on video. Love it or hate it, Capcom is a company that likes to charge $20 for costume packs and has slightly different versions of the same game. Sorry but I doubt anything will change on there side.
Good day fellas, love the show keep it up, first time battle cry, so i hope this is the right place.
my battle cry goes out to the ability to screw up basic things that make a video game.
Last weeks episode u guys (brent in particular) pointed out the inability for spiderman do a simple task such as climb a wall, i found this first hand in the last ,ohh i dunno, dozen games. To be precise, i literally just got off playing the nba elite 11 demo and they failed the ability to make players shoot the ball (i literally played for 3hrs and had 5 dunks and 1 field goal) i mean if you cant shoot in a basketball game, what is the point?, i finally got fed up and tried enslaved, only to find the character’s movement sluggish and heavy. i am also playing star wars force unleashed and the game’s camera and lock systems are simply atrocious.
have i been spoiled by games like uncharted and god of war where the movements and at least the basic controls of what is needed to play the game are flawless? i would think the first thing u do when you develop a game is make the main character as playable as possible? if this is difficult, then they need more development time, and fight the system who makes them put out unpolished games.
keep crying havoc…and sorry brent but
LOOK AT MY HORSE, MY HORSE IS AMAZING…lol
I read an article this afternoon that stated that capcom said the real Dante isn’t “cool” for this day and age, not cool? Are you *bleeping* kidding me! Since when did video games start to care. Who flipping cares! Leave the “you’re not cool” thing to teenagers and high school please and thank you.
This isn’t Twilight, this is the damn Video game industry. Devil May Cry was a great series and there was nothing wrong with anything. Demon’s Souls sell t less then 2.7 million(I think), that didn’t affect the game at all, People love the hell out of it.
If Capcom or Ninja Theory want to focus and just getting a cash grab, well then they can *bleep* off.
You don’t need to reboot the character if the franchise starts to suck. I agree that DMC started to feel stale and by number 4, it was like playing the same game, with a few unexciting changes. However, Dante, love him or hate him, has become a sort of an iconic character. He was both intentionally and unintentionally funny in a way that didn’t make you cringe but was all around entertaining instead. To me, he was like a goofy Snake from MGS, who made no apologies about being one. That made him unique and it’s a shame that he is simply rebooted in favor of Robert Pattison here.
I’d be all over a reboot that would throw the old Dante into a new setting or even a different type of game (as long as it’s an action/fighting game) and so would many fans, I think. Nobody argues a change to the series as one has become desperately needed. It’s the character reboot that people dislike. It’s as if DC took Batman and made him an emo teenager or Marvel took Spiderman… oh wait, they already did that. But you get my point.
I don’t like the new dmc for these reasons.
1. I wouldn’t realy call it dmc I would go for the name Emo May Cry
2. If you have a bad hair day don’t put that hair in the game.
3. I did’t know that the new Dante (Tameem Antoniades: (not so) creative director) was working for Ninja Theory.
4. They say that they are inspired by the underground punk rock scene, the scene says it all. This doesn’t belong above the ground
5. Trying to kill a frincise with your own bad thaste isn’t cool.
6. I have a deja vu, I saw this once before with Peter Parker in Spiderman 3. Going emo didn’t work out so well for him eather.
Hello my harassers of homies my worshipers of women! How art thou?
TGS was rather exciting, of course Ico/Shadow of the Colossus, and The last Guardian are something I’m very much looking forward to,list toppers for sure. However I’m here to cry havok over DMC. I’m excited about this game, I hope as the months roll on I will continue to be excited. The fact that there was a new game coming out soon was probably inevitable, but Devil May Cry 5 could be a risky move. A reboot is more risky. I am all for it if the game is good, the story is fantastic, and it doesn’t stray too far from its roots, and I’m not talking about the roots of Dante’s hair. Some people seem to think Dante’s white hair is so fucking important, and I have read numerous comments about people pissing and moaning, about this issue, it sickens me. At this point for all we know the games plot could focus solely on how he became so prematurely gray/white, wouldn’t that just make all those naysayers so happy. The cutscene we all saw showed much of the same stylistic action we are all familiar with, the setting is very similar, enemies are true to the original, ebony and Ivory are all there, and Dante is just a more updated emo. I love your show, you guys rock, keep rocking, or I will smash your heads together like rocks.
Cry Havok mofos!
He was a cunt, now he’s a pussy. My friend summed this up pretty well.
“Ahh, jumping on all the buildings at the beginning of two. So beautiful. What’s it going to be now? Jumping on top of American blonde skanks and attacking happy people? How about having a call of duty mini-game — or go the whole hog! Why not give people farmville tokens with every purchase?! Damn money-making Capcom suck arse giving over to shit developers to try and reinvent a loved franchise for a western audience scum…”
He went on to say:
“Forget listening to death metal while hacking up those demons with a screeching purple guitar. Get used to a guy crying into the mic with no bass line while you moan the demons to death and dye their hair black.”
And finally:
“He can’t drive a motorbike vertically up a wall if he’s not old enough to have a license; a special edition bullet for my valentine scooter is not the same.”
Wow 17 votes and I’m at -5….a few people must’ve liked the look of the game then….No one’s talking about the action or the music in the trailer, just his look. A bit odd. Would you all be happy with the same trailer if they quite simply put the old Dante in it just a little younger? The exact same clip but the protagonist has white hair and his old coat on?
You couldn’t tell because it’s a first person shooter, but I heard the protagonist (every time I say that word I think of the Star Wars reviews heheh) in the new Bioshock Infinte is an EMO! A 1930′s emo! That’s right! Still all keen and pumped for that game?
LOOK AT MY HORSE, MY HORSE IS AMAZING…lol
( that never gets old!!!)
Ninja Theory?…Reboot?… Damn! There goes the series had to happen sooner or later I guess
I couldn’t agree more.. especially with the last sentence. Even though DMC pretty much paved the way for GoW and current gen Ninja Gaidens, the gameplay needs to evolve.
wow dude I was starting to respect your opinion until you said fuck everyone who doesn’t agree…
