Hey everyone, DK here with today’s Member BattleCry which, as you might suspect by this week’s topic starter, has to do with an idea on how to implement Microsoft’s Natal into a true gaming experience. It comes from EBA Member TheCrisisKing and asks, “What could Superhero games be like with Natal???” Grab your favorite cape (or tights) and hit the jump to check it out…
TheCrisisKing says:
My Battlecry for Natal is a game idea that doesn’t fall into a common genre in gaming. Natal games used for the superhero genre. With the release of Arkham Asylum last year, potential for superhero games is evident. Using the technology of Natal, you could be able to fight thugs and villains like you would in real life. Also, in order to use superpowers, like heat vision, physical actions such as putting fingers to your temple could cue the powers to work. It would overall allow comic book geeks everywhere to feel superhero without having to mash buttons.

Hmmm, pretty interesting to think about. Personally, I’d love to play a Spider-Man game with this in mind because, quite frankly, making that wicked pose with your hand to shoot webs would be SWEET! Anyone else have thoughts on implementing Natal into Superhero games? DK = OUT!

It could work, but I think it would have to be simplified a lot
I cant really picture walking or flying without doing something awkward with my hands or body
Seems like they would need a controller implented somehow to keep it fun
I thought everyone agreed it’s a stupid idea to swing your arms around for 3 hours straight coz well… IT’S TIRING!!
It’s stimply TOO active ^^
I’m sure parents and spouses at home will just LOVE the broken furniture.
Sounds like a pretty cool idea, but like they were talking about in Skirmish 60 I think it would have to be supplementary. Its one thing to shoot webs with a motion of your hand but how is Natal going to know where exactly you’re pointing on the screen (its not like your finger has an IR sensor like the Wiimote)?
Also I think that moving about in a virtual world in your living room is going to be tricky for anyone who isnt using natal in one of microsoft’s specially designed lounges. My living room isnt that big, or that square, and I cant be running around kicking my stuff to pieces to play some stupid ballgame.
put it this way: Bobby “Satan’s Strap-On” Kotick said recently that Activision’s Spider-Man games sucked.
So the next Spidey game is going to be third party and most likely X-platform. if there was to be any Natal functionality, you would have to be able to perform all the same actions with a controller on 360, PS3 and PC, because Activision aren’t going to limit their target audience on a big title by making it Natal exclusive. they’ll sell twice as much if everybody can play it which not only means people with a different playform but also those 360 users who DON’T buy into Natal. ergo, Daniel-san, Natal would just be a crappy gimmick that probably wouldn’t enhance the gameplay much, if at all. no no Not-At-All.
sorry to burst your bubble chief, tell me if i’m wrong.
also, having to take your hand of the controller for any reason would not be cool because if something happens and you have to react quickly, you’ll end up sat there with you finger up your ass staring at a CONTINUE? screen
I think if I had to play through arkam asylum for 12 hours by waveing my, fighting and doing counter atttack I would be extremely tired. I just played Wii sport resort swordfighting and I got so tired in my arms after 15 min. If Im tired and just want to relax with a fun game punshing in the air is not what I want to do.
Initially I thought that Natal was an amazing idea that could possibly change the face of gaming. Now, not so sure. Listening to the conjecture on the internet via articles and threads, I’m beggining to think that this has no real application to gaming other than the casual market. Quick games that are good with a few mates after a few drinks. But would I be interested jumping around trying to play at being spiderman? Hell to the No. I play video games with a vested interest in story and characterization. Playing GTA4 with a joypad is virtually a thought less process that does not obstruct the narrative, something Natal would be an obstruction to. I’d be too busy trying to recouperate instead of paying attention to the plot twists.
Supplemental to gameplay, I see that Natal might work. But all we have seen so far is prerendered footage or that slapball game being demoed, nothing that involves games we play demonstrated in a way that would have us buy into Microsofts hype. I am still to be convinced weither Natal is going to be a “Game changer” that they would have us believe.
IT NEVER WOULD WORK NOT EVEN WITH THE BEST IDEAS
