After last week’s exploration into all things 2D, we’re switching dimensions to gather YOUR ideas on the gaming franchises that can most benefit from the inevitable implementation of 3D technology. Sure, it’s a broad stroke, but you loyal (and creative) Axe Heads have already managed to come up with some pretty spiffy ideas as to how 3D gaming can ultimately change the way we play. We’re kicking things off with a Member BattleCry from PeezSquared who avoids running in circles as he gets straight to the point in the well crafted MBC all about 3D and the FPS genre. Put on your funny looking glasses and check it out after the jump!

PeezSquared says:
The gaming franchises that would most benefit from 3D technology are first-person-shooter titles like Modern Warfare, Battlefield, Halo, Bioshock, etc.
The first person perspective already greatly increases the immersion of players into the game by setting the world in front of your eyes as if you were an actual part of the story. There are no character avatar shoulders to look over to remind you that you are simply controlling an artificial being. Instead, the obstacles and challenges come right at your face for you to deal with with your own (virtual) hands.
3D innovations would bring that immersion to the next level with a greater sense of depth and realism in the game surroundings. Coupled with surround sound systems, 3D gaming would help to create more intense playing experiences.
Imagine fighting across a war-zone, tracer rounds zipping past your head, artillery fire in the background, and an explosion rips the ground apart in front of you. Debris and shrapnel are hurled towards you, and with the 3D technology at work, I guarantee you’ll flinch every time.
I do not believe 3D technology has been developed enough yet to provide such a drastically more real and intense immersion, but it all has to start somewhere.

Well said Peez! I too think that the current 3D tech has a way to go before it will truly impact the interactive entertainment experience, but I can TOTALLY see the FPS genre benefiting from some sweet ass 3D action, especially when combined with the other pieces of tech you mentioned! Well, what about the other ‘Axe Heads? Anyone else have thoughts on particular franchises with the FPS genre they think will benefit from the use of 3D??? Let us know in the comments below and if you have a DIFFERENT 3D GAME/GENRE you wanna sound off on then feel free to do that over on this week’s topics starter post where you can SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

OK, that’s all for now, but stay tuned to the ‘Axe all week long to see if your MBC gets featured and keep the ideas coming!!!

Hey guys have been a real big fan of the show now for a good while and usually agree with most opinions. however as far as 3d and this weeks battlecry i think you underestimate 3d’s potential to impact gameplay. though i do have to agree that as a whole it will be mostly implemented very gimmicky which worries me. anyways 3d gets me wondering about indie developer and indie styled game that may be able to really monopolize 3d and use it as a game play element. such as have multiple planes being stacked outward and inward and having some sort of different interaction between each. for more standard games that we see today such as for shooters and rand possibly some racers, have the HUD on a layered planes lowering the intrusiveness of the HUD but also increasing the amount of HUD items and usage. also ironically i think 2D game swill be really cool in 3D. i know this doesnt make sense at first glance but imagine a 2D platformer with differnt play depths available to move through each acting in 2D. sorta like little big planet or i think it was paper mario 2 or somthin along that line from nintendo the rapers of all that was once good in gameing.
The panel sounds like they have been burnt by previous ‘advancements’ in gaming technology. Motion controls on wii have disapointed us all, excluding casual/asleep gamers and fat people (wii fit)
however we must have hope! with so many let downs in recent history we are due something big. 3d may have a bad rep for previous attempts e.g. shitty blue and red glasses)but that was horrible movies with horrible story telling.
OK the best genre’s that could take advantage of 3D i think would be immersive shooters or survival horror. An example could be condemed. Maybe not the franchise that stands out for most, but imagine the lights blacking out in that game… before a crack head came running out of the screen with a rusty pipe! im sure a little pee pee would happen.
im excited about 3D
Hey guys, first time long time…
(See what I did there?)
Anyways, although I was never a huge fan of the game when it came out for Xbox 360 or wii, I would love to see a 3D version of the table tennis series from rockstar. Now, the idea of seeing the ping-pong ball flying out of the screen towards you is pretty damn cool on its own, but it would be even cooler if Natal support was included. Imagine holding an actual ping-pong paddle in your hand and hitting a ball that is seemingly actually there. It would not only be fun, but it would also be a great tech-demo for what 3D (and Natal, for that matter) can really do.
My Lads of LOVE-YOU-LONG-TIME How art thou?
Well like you already discussed so far I don’t really see the actual fun of games being in 3D, because it doesn’t add anything in gameplay. Till I remembered one particular franchise!
Ok now don’t Burn me straight away. Star Wars…….
Not that crap fest that we have been waiting for since 1977. Well I wasn’t born back then but never mind.
Imagine the Death Star Run or the Battle of Endor in 3D? That would be awesome. Piece of Tie fighter flying into your living room, That fat guy’s exploding X-wing into your FACE!!. The asteroid field from The Empire Strikes back. I can imagine scene after scene after scene that would be cool, or any level from the X-wing and Tie fighter series would be great.
Maybe even a lightsaber level like in the Arcade, BAAM a lightsaber in your face!!!
First things first Elder Scrolls is where its at for first person. second….well perhaps thats all there should be.
So, if you were to take a Fallout 3 and mash it against a heavy rain and splash on a little batman arkham asylum. With a dash of dolphin bits – obviously. 3d would be enhancing.
Example: the TV show Psyche. Where something stands out a little bit more.
Activate a ’3d mode’ where you see things a little differently, maybe a piece of equipment you need to solve a quest, or item that’ll help you upgrade a weapon. As well as the experience of a 3d viewing, the gameplay would be effected.
Mass Effect 4.. Shepard goes back in time to save the dolphins.
I think systems like Wii and Natal could benefit from a 3D perspective because like you guys said they could implement the 3D with motion control for a more enhanced gaming experience And they could find new ways to implement it into survival horror to make it that much scarier
3D will never take off in the mainstream until the tech advances to a point where the need for glasses can be dropped.
The Head Tracking tech is probably the best way to go with this at the moment, so I could see some 3D games working with Natal.
I don’t believe 3D will change games at all though, but it “could” offer more immersion, much like 5.1 surround sound does compared to stereo. I doubt it will ever be “essential”
Hi guys,
i think … well a game like god of war would have benefit from 3d tech. Imagine all the cool combos going 3d (since all combo are all like a big freakin awesome cinematic) or beating a dude to his death while seing all his everything he once own … blown away !
also when you read things like books you could just bent over it (thats what she said, for DK) and read it or look at environment(instead of holding a button to do so) and other epic things !
But still… pretty good game in hd !
