A little after the news broke about Infinity Ward not having dedicated servers for the PC version of Modern Warfare 2 the outcry was so loud that almost 123,000 people (most likely more by now) have signed a petition asking Infinity Ward to reconsider.  Recently Infinity Ward’s Robert Bowling acknowledged the protest and dropped the full details on IWNET.

For those that don’t know, IWNET is the matchmaking system that is essentially replacing dedicated servers in Modern Warfare 2. The system allows playlists, private matches, a party system, a friend list, cheat/hack free games and supplies the gamer with smoother gameplay. As Bowling puts it: “IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.”

The matchmaking will be made much simpler in MW2 as Bowling explains:

All you have to do is select the playlist (pre-set gametypes with custom rules) that fits the style of play you are in the mood for. When you do, it will automatically find you a game with the best performance, ping, and preferences based on your location and individual connection as well as matching you with players of your same SKILL.

Even this news hasn’t slowed the outcry as Bowling’s post has seen nearly 4,000 comments on the new system…many of the “not-so-friendly” variety.

So, what do you think?  Will this new system replace dedicated servers for good or is this experiment destined for failure?  The proof will obviously be in the pudding as they say on November 10th, but until then you can give your two cents below.
