Hey everyone, DK here to chat about the, uh, “healthy discussion” going on regarding a few tidbits from EpicBattleCry Skirmish 060. For those that haven’t see the show (WTF?!), here’s the deal…
Our Member BattleCry of the Week came from TalonoftheSilverHawk who, in a nutshell, was rather unpleased with SCEE for not brining Atlus’ Demon’s Souls, one of the best PS3 RPGs in recent memory, to his neck of the woods over in the UK. We gave Talon the platform to raise the issue which was “Please don’t withhold such a great game from me by not making it available in my region.”
Next up was Tony’s BattleCry, which went out to region locking on consoles. He pointed out that most handhelds and some consoles are not locked, but that there’s really no point to any of it in the first place no matter what the console was. Because we failed to separate the two topics and transition between them (easy to see how we slipped up now that we look back), there was some confusion about what Tony was saying…and rightly so. The good news? The topic has spawned a great discussion on the matter over in the EBA forums which you can access here. In it, Viking Brent points out exactly what went down:
“We really should have clarified this point in the show but we were running long and trying to finish up. The PS3 console and games are region-free (with a few possible exceptions, I’ve read somewhere that Stranglehold and a few others are region locked). But (and its a big but) if you’re not using HDMI there’s still the NTSC vs. PAL problem, some games region lock online play, and the biggest problem is that DLC is usually region locked. So if you have a U.S. copy of the game you probably won’t be able to play online or download new content if you’re on a European PSN account.”
Yeah, so, to clarify we were trying to point out the pointlessness of region locking of any kind…We didn’t mean to specifically say that Demon’s Souls as a game was region locked. Sorry if it came across that way. Many fans and fellow gamers have stepped up to suggest that importing the game is a good alternative, which is an excellent point.
Anyway, here’s the BEST part of all of this…The ‘Axe is all about generating informative, entertaining discussion and breaking down the barriers that face gamers today. For Talon, the issue of not having access to Demon’s Souls within his region still exists, no matter how much we talk the subject into the ground. So, it’s OUR TURN to step up and EpicBattleAxe.com is gonna send him a copy of the game from here in the U.S.! What better way to celebrate the insightful discussion going on about this topic than to see his desire to play Demon’s Souls come true. We’ve reached out to Talon and will keep you posted on this touching story of Demons, Hawks, Locks, and Love.
Thanks as always for checking out the show and again, feel free to chime in on the topic in the EBA forums right here or in the comments section below!
Cheers,
DK

Man, if I could go back in time, I’d definitely use TalonoftheSilverHawk’s battlecry as my own..
Stupid SCEE.
Great way to show some love to the fans, EBA
Now, excuse me while I go and hate the fact that I live in the Netherlands.
And that’s why EBA deserves the name “EPIC” – well done guys!
Talon’…you’re one lucky…hawk!
Awesome guys! Congrats to the TalOOOOOOOOOOOOOOn!
Hooray for Talon! lucky bugger!
Hopefully when mine arrives we can still go online with it! See you in there brotha!
Wow, that’s really awesome!! Congrats Talon!!
Yay EBA is the best!! Good call there with Hawk
I have some more stuff to discuss about this matter, but I’ll do it in the forums.
EBA, you guys are indeed epic!
i would just like to add, im an avid RPG gamer from norway, i have imported Demon’s Souls from the US a while back and i can play it with my Norwegian PS3 on a Norwegian PSN account, it works great online too.
Hopefully this region BS will disapear for good.
Awesome that youre sending the game, and hope to see you all online!
The Interplay game name you are looking for in the begining is Future Wars.
Yeah, This is pretty awesome. Nice move gentleman, very classy. AND a great way to bring the issue to light. I hope to see more community support (not just you guys supporting us, but the community supporting itself) and raising the alert on issues such as this.
Congrats Talon, and good thinking AxeHeads!
Wow! you guys are awesome! well done
That’s very generous of you EBA… nice one hawk!
That is great to send him a copy – nice to see EBC getting some debate going as well.
Why is it SCEE’s fault if Atlus, who I reckon is the publisher of this game, isn’t bringing their game to Europe?
Atlus was responsible for the North-American publish, and SCEJ was responsible for the release in Japan. Thus, it’s not really Atlus’s fault either. It’s more the fault of any company that doesn’t want to publish it in Europe. Being that it’s a PS3 exclusive, the first one to blame would be SCEE.
To clarify even more, if you want to buy this game and youre from Europe, just buy it, theres no tricks to make the game work online, it works fine with a PSN (europe) account. If you want this game and you dont know where to buy it, pm me. i know a cheap place (dollars to euros conversion ftwwwww)!.
As for NTSC vs PAL, the only problem you can encounter if your tv is old as hell and it displays the image in black and white. If you have a HD TV that wont be an issue at all.
To finish up, locked games are rare cases such as Stranglehold (didn’t knew about this one), Madden games or MLB games. The rest will work just fine
As for the Xbox 360, theres a ton of region free games you can buy from shops in canada or ebay. The games are asian but the game itself (except for the Users Manual!) is in english.
Hope you guys read this and if you got questions just leave a red message on my pm box floor.
greetings from Portugal btw
i bet you didnt expect any tiny countries listening to you podcast…think again O_O
Awesome sauce!
Kudos on shipping a little present to your fellow AxeHead. =)
I have to say one thing, a more true point has not been mentioned in a while.
SCEE UK PSN is fricken crap when compared with what is available to our gaming compatriots in the State. We in the UK get BBC iplayer(SO ‘F’ing What, we have to pay a £140 tv license anyway and get it on the internet free). Point being More free content on US PSN vs UK PSN.
However while they do suck, all is not completely lost. For those with a little know how can create a US account just look up a random address on google and use that zip code. You can buy point card on ebay if you want to buy anything.
on the exclusive games point, another point a lot of PS3 games arent actually region encoded unlike blurays…so if you check out the web you can find a few distributors that are willing to ship games around the world.
A good point, I missed god of war and 2 on the PS2(work/travel) regardless when i was that they were releasing God of war and 2 HD on PS3 i jumped for joy until i realised it was US only…anyway found a website that imported US PS3 titles and have happily completed it and am seriously looking forward to God of war 3.
