Axehead Assembly #25: Games of the Year

Prepare to roll a dildo in glitter and mount it in a trophy case because it's 'Games of the Year' time for the Axehead Assembly!

Before we get to that, however, we tackle Christopher Brady's blog Why I think games are NOT art. After we have (very politely) lynch mobbed Mr. Brady we discuss what exactly IS the definition of art. We then go on to chat about the games that make a good case for 'games as art' and the games that definitely don't.

Next up on this monolithic, bumper sized episode we delve into the titular 'Games of the Year'. All the usual suspects are present and accounted for (The Last of Us, GTAV, Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 4...) but we also make time for some of the more overlooked games like Total War: Rome 2, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Ni No Kuni and Gucamelee. We talk more games than you can shake Nazi Gandalf's magic stick at!

Add to that some staunch disagreements over the merits of Binary Domain and the Metal Gear franchise, Sigmund's XBOXONE launch report plus Saints Row 4, Tomb Raider, Sonic: Lost World, Doom, Mega Man X, Surgeon Simulator 2013 plus many more and you have a maniacally cackling, "PUSH TO TALK!" shouting, nuclear shark-bomb throwing podcast on your hands.

All that and a lot more can be enjoyed right here:

This is a design paper analyzing Sonic the Hedgehog 2, my favorite platformer of my childhood, using the Modes, Goals, and Dynamics model. Please enjoy, and I'll follow up any questions. I plan to write a similar Dark Souls paper this week.
