Axehead Assembly #25: Games of the Year

Prepare to roll a dildo in glitter and mount it in a trophy case because it's 'Games of the Year' time for the Axehead Assembly!

Before we get to that, however, we tackle Christopher Brady's blog Why I think games are NOT art. After we have (very politely) lynch mobbed Mr. Brady we discuss what exactly IS the definition of art. We then go on to chat about the games that make a good case for 'games as art' and the games that definitely don't.

Next up on this monolithic, bumper sized episode we delve into the titular 'Games of the Year'. All the usual suspects are present and accounted for (The Last of Us, GTAV, Bioshock Infinite, Battlefield 4...) but we also make time for some of the more overlooked games like Total War: Rome 2, Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons, Ni No Kuni and Gucamelee. We talk more games than you can shake Nazi Gandalf's magic stick at!

Add to that some staunch disagreements over the merits of Binary Domain and the Metal Gear franchise, Sigmund's XBOXONE launch report plus Saints Row 4, Tomb Raider, Sonic: Lost World, Doom, Mega Man X, Surgeon Simulator 2013 plus many more and you have a maniacally cackling, "PUSH TO TALK!" shouting, nuclear shark-bomb throwing podcast on your hands.

All that and a lot more can be enjoyed right here:

How many hours of gaming do I have left?

So I thought it would be a good idea to do the math on how many hours of spare time I have left before I throw in the towel for good. With a sizable backlog, psplus throwing close to half a dozen games at me each month, new games coming out, two kids, some physical activity (rock climbing) and trying to get to a competent level of playing guitar, bass, piano and drums, its time for a reality check. Unsurprisingly, the math is not in my favor.

In the last few years, I have not had…

EpicBattleCry Skirmish 245 - Week of August 18 2014

Hey all, as some of you may already know I was in the hospital over the weekend with salmonella poisoning. Its taken me a few days to get back in the swing of things so I thought we'd do things a bit differently this week for EpicBattleCry. I'm posting a playlist with all five of this week's video episodes in addition to the…

How to breathe life into a new Zelda game: a longwinded rambling

Right so a couple of things I feel Zelda SHOULD be

1. Link should always be Male.

(I have no reasoning behind this but Idk I just always thought it to be a universal constant, and making him a female for the sake of making him a female is accomplishes nothing)

2. I am totally all for a female protagonist.

(Why not make Zelda the protagonist for once?)

What I was loosely thinking was:

Setting: Link is prince of Hyrule and in charge of either…

Axehead Assembly #44: Rodman's Beach Volleyball Murder Island

Prepare to dye your hair strange colors and star in really crappy B-movie action flicks because the Axehead Assembly is standing at the ready with a knife and a bikini!

No Axe Factor This Week

Hello all - while there is much to talk about from Gamescom (more than E3, methinks), you will have to wait a week to get the skinny.   Our Viking Lord Adams has taken ill and will not be available for musing this evening. We are always sad when we can not raise a glass with you...but we will be back…

This isn't a thread about PC being better than consoles. It is already a fact, just as a higher frame rate is better than a so called filmic 24 or 30 fps experience. But enough of that, there is…Continue
