Axehead Assembly #29: Jesus versus Orcs

Prepare to wield the bible as a weapon... literally, because the Axehead Assembly is ransacking your house and will not stop until it finds your secret stash of moon cookies!

This week on 'Cleaving the Leavings' we take a look back at The Axe Factor 146's topic of crowd funding and The Banner Saga. We also touch on the subject of internet sexism by way of the Mighty Number Nine fan community.

The vanguard this week delivers part two of our 'Best RPGs of last gen'. The games or franchises up for discussion this week are Fallout 3, Final Fantasy, Mass Effect, Ni No Kuni and The Witcher.

Stir in some Muramasa, Farcry 3 plus a bit of Hearthstone and you have a Gibili screaming, falcon-cry botching, itchy ball scratching podcast on your hands!

All that and a lot more can be enjoyed right here:

Kudos to the Editing-God Chuchu, who made the initial mess listenable once again.

Well, I already gave you guys my two cents on Fallout last week. After Skyrim, it just ain't the same anymore.

Now, Mass Effect 2, in my humble opinion, is one of the great gaming treasures of the last console generation. Never played the first one, though I hear it might feel a bit clunky now, anyway. I didn't have as many problems with part 3 as most people did and thought it was a very good, just not fantastic game in its own right.

I really tried to get into Ni No Kuni. It is an absolutely charming title, with fantastic art direction and splendid music. I can see why people would love it... but it just wasn't for me. That's why also never really got into Final Fantasy. Guess there's something missing inside of me, that it would take to actually turn me into a JRPG-fan.

The Witcher has always looked interesting to me, so I might try the series out once Wild Hunt arrives on next-gen. Considering I'll have a PS4 by then. Yeah... my plans are always a bit sketchy.

BTW Tokyochuchu, I'm actually kind of glad you cut down on the swearing. It got a bit overly excessive the last time around. But you guys are doing quite a decent job filling the gaping emptiness the absence of the AxeLords has left behind. They should really watch out, once one of you starts getting the Daniel Kayser perm right.

@Christoph Zeis: Yes I agree. I was taken aback when I listened to the previous episode. Did I really swear that much? Apart from Brak's intro (which was completely riffing on the last episode) I remained mostly swear free. The strange thing is, I don't even swear that much in daily life!

Great episode. Do you guys know, whether you will keep your spot on EBA? :)

Comment by Human Metal on February 3, 2014 at 1:41pm

Well, we don't know if we'll still be featured, once the Axelords return, but we'll definitely keep on doing the show.

The whole thing about Dina and Mighty Number 9 didn't have anything to do with Dina's gender or her personal views (although for some it actually did).

The problem is that she's unqualified to work on the game, but yet she's both the community manager and works on character design. That she got the job because her boyfriend works on the project - even though she only played a single Mega Man game and isn't a fan, is a slap to the face of everybody who gave money to the project.

That she then lied and decieved all backers when confronted with this, doesn't exactly help either. Honestly I get why people wanted their money back: this just shows that the people behind the project have very little respect for its patrons, since Dina was at no point mentioned in the Kickstarter - but again got the job because, "whatever, it's their money now".

Derto, of course it had something to do with her gender and her view on certain things, for some people.

I'm well aware that she had made a couple of downright stupid remarks on twitter regarding certain topics, before she got hired for the job. Had she made these remarks, after she already got the job, that would have been highly unprofessional and reason for legitimate concern, but she didn't. Also: The guys from 8-4 Studios, who are handling all the kickstarter- and community-side of things are definitely to blame here as well, since they obviously didn't do enough research before hiring her. They should have known beforehand that you can't hire just ANYONE as a community manager in this day and age, without risking a massive shitstorm by oversensitive fanboys. Also, it wasn't her boyfriend, that got her the job, but A friend. And if people think that's something out of the ordinary in the business world, they need a hard reality check.

Be that as it may, none of that justifies this massive and downright ridiculous outcry from the community, just because she is on the design team. As already stated by her and the rest of the crew, she is not responsible for actually creating any of the robots in the game. She is not responsible for the design of the actual game mechanics or the story. She has no influence on ANY of the core creative team's decisions. She was, first and foremost, meant as a bridge between the community and the creative team and hadn't done anything AFTER being hired, to merit the massive backlash she had to face. And I've read a lot of the archived messages she got on twitter (before she freaked out and closed her account, which was dumb, but understandable in that situation) and the forum. And there was some really disgusting, mysogynistic stuff in there.

So, I agree that mistakes were made on both ends. But again: NOTHING OF THAT justifies the incredible number of people behaving like whiny elementary school kids and spamming their hate/rage-vomit all over the forums and her twitter account. That's simply embarrassing.
