EpicBattleCry - Is PlayStation Now Too Pricey or Just Stupidly Setup?

The recent launch of the PlayStation Now streaming service was met with quite a bit of confusion and outrage over the service's pricing model. Well, today on EBC we take a question from Frank Simko (@FrankSSimko) pertaining to the pricing and what we expect moving forward. Open up your minds (and your wallets) for this costly edition of EBC!

I like the idea of streaming a game for 4 hours as an extended demo basically. I used to love renting games back in the day but where I am living now (Taiwan) there aren't any services that offer game rentals online or in stores.

Being able to try before you buy is always a great help to consumers, I think.

Streaming as a demo form might be a good idea. Game demos are getting bigger and bigger and streaming might either be less bandwidth intense or put you off buying something completely when the game starts to buffer.

When I think of a rental service I think 24 hours as a minimum and since the last time I played a rented game it was $1 if you convert but that was during the mega drive days when you would play and replay something over and over.

But then you have something like MGS GZ that after you paid for 4 hours your left wondering what to do for the remaining 3h50m.

The current price model makes complete sense for rolling out a new service. The last thing you want is a massive flood of players hammering an unstable service.

I didn't really follow all the news about Playstation Now, but as a streaming service it basically could run on any smart TV without the need for a console. In that case, the current pricing would make perfect sense.

Coupled with the Playstation TV the streaming service makes a lot more sense with this pricing. On a full console, with PS+, a Netflix like solution would probably fit better.

Seeing as how you guys talked about Netflix so much and how Netflix got it's start shipping discs to you in the mail I'm surprised no one brought up GameFly. Here's the big what if, what if GameFly and Netflix were to team up? GameFly already seems to have some kind of deal going where they have games almost as soon as they come out and Netflix has the infrastructure to stream content. Sure it's not as easy as flipping a switch but all the ground work seems to be in place already.

The way I imagine this working (not that I think this will actually happen) would be that streaming games would be another tier in either subscription and money from that tier would be split between the two companies. Alternatively, what if Netflix decided to get into the streaming games business by themselves? How much would you guys be willing to pay (on top of a normal Netflix subscription) to also have access to video game streaming? Assuming of course that the games available would mostly be games from a year ago like the movie and TV shows Netflix already has.

Identifying with games and game characters

This is actually just a copy-paste of my most recent comment on this weeks Axe Factor. I've long intended this as a blog post, which is why it appears here as well.

I haven't heard the podcast yet, but I felt like writing a response to the question to this weeks poll, "Have you ever had a "That's Me!" experience with a video game character?"

The answer is yes. One of the most powerful gaming experiences for me the last couple of years have been To The…
