When Brent talks about being able to play old skool games while you wait for your main game to install/load that's exactly what I do. I call it "my Playstation Vita" and it rocks!! No more boring game-lobby countdowns :P

This reminds me of when I imagined how you guys would be side quest characters in my "2D Skyrim/Maplestory" game idea. Basically the player happens upon you guys in a tavern watching NPCs play popular card and board games and yelling about how they're irrelevant and over shadow the good games that no one plays anymore.

Through proper conversation picks you three would take the player on a quest through a dungeon to find the "Epic Battle Axe" that mows through enemies that were too low a level with one hit but doesn't do any damage to bosses.

I think I imagined Daniel's character being mostly curly hair.

To what Daniel was saying about playing during load screens, many many game developers can think of a lot of good minigames to put in during loading screens, but there's a rason why only games like Fifa or Namco games often do it and that's because, the quote john carmack, More often than not, the best solution to your problem in code is patented by someone else.

Basically Namco owns the rights to that idea so if anybody does it without the loophole of being able to explain why it isn't a 'game', they leave themselves open to patent trolling. AC, lost planet .etc manage to skip around this by giving your interractibles things during the load but making them pointless so you can't call it a game. PS4 games manage to just about avoid it with the partial because luckily installers don't count as loading screens, and playing the actual game doesn't count as a minigame. But at the end of the day, there's a lot of cool things people could be doing that will get them sent cease and desist orders if they actually try. The issue is all legal, not technical.

Namco owns the rights to loading games? I seem to remeber playing pong and space invaders while loading some Commodore 64 games, but perhaps that was a small issue those days. At least having music running and some sort of graphic to keep the eyes busy is something I prefer over dead silence, an image and a progress bar.

Namco I believe only acquired it after 98. I agree though, I mean one of the things I hated most about mass effect 2 was having super slow, super boring animations that were way shorter than the length of some of the loads and never varied. At least the elevators in ME1 rarely repeated news broadcasts.

Hi guys, I'm Diego from GameBlox, producer in the Pier Solar HD project for Dreamcast/Ps4/XboxOne/Ouya/Ps3/HP Calculators... no, not that last one (yet!).

I'm a long time follower of the Epic Battle Axe podcasts, and I would be very excited to talk about a game with you guys! I even had an idea with your personalities in mind, so it is interesting that this week you are talking about making a game :)

For my idea at least, I don't think 250k would be needed :) (more like 50k/100k) I think you would be surprised at how simple it is.

And I think you would agree that the game must actually be very good on its own, and the characters/story/setting is just the added fun on top of it. Therefore, I don't think the size of the fan base matters as much as the quality and the possibilities for fun that the game itself will possibly offer.

Maybe we could set up a Skype call someday? Even just to throw ideas around, see what would be involved, it could be fun just to talk about it.

I actually wanted to make at least one level just for fun, but didn't have the necessary time lately... :( Maybe I'll get around to doing it after the release of our next game in a few weeks.

And yeah, I meant to post about the patent thing in one of the lastest podcasts. Namco does have the rights to playing smaller games during load screens (you can see that being used in Tekken, with the Galaga loading screen).

Even though Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect have some interactions between loading times, they are not actually games (you don't have goals, etc).

I think it will expire in 2015 though (unconfirmed).

AC: Unity - The good, the bad and the ugly
