In the spirit of Halloween, team EBC evaluates the state of horror gaming and seeks to determine what truly makes an innovative, scary gaming experience. With titles like Resident Evil taking a turn towards action and others, like BioShock and Dead Space, playing more on the surreal and psychological, what is it that truly makes gamers get goosebumps in this generation of gaming? Plus, how can gaming take cues from the shifting mentality in Hollywood that has reverted back to basic scare tactics within its most popular horror flicks.

Happy November EBC. I can't wait for GTAV on the pc!!

Comment by Daracus on November 1, 2012 at 12:00pm

Sounds like the PC version of GTAV will not be coming out alongside the console versions (it sucks but which was expected).  I can always borrow a 360/GTA5 from a buddy once he is done with it.

I don't understand why people don't talk about Manhunt anymore when it's about horror in games. First of all I think stealth is the ideal way to built pressure and tension. Combined with a twisted world and the feeling of isolation it just scares the s%!t out of me. Also Manhunt managed to make you as a gamer reflect about your urge for violence. Why again do we wait longer for the kill just to make it more gruesome? Generally I would love to see a similar game, only with more puzzle-elements and less but smarter enemies ( something I would love to see in pretty much any action game).

In regards to Halo 4. First off I am a pretty big fan of the series and universe in general. I know you guys are not fans and i get it and that's fine. But They are very well made games and great experiences. I think a lot of people lump Halo in with COD and whatnot but halo is not madden or CODBLOPS they put just as much effort into the single player experience as the multiplayer and has a little more meat to it than the average military shooter in my opinion. Mind you I am not as big into multiplayer as a lot of people. While I enjoy the halo Multiplayer, i Don't play it more than a month or two after i finish the campaign. Point is they don't just pump one out every year just to cash in, a little more love goes into Halo than that, but i digress.

In regards to how it is the most expensive thing Microsoft has ever done I agree with Brent they are just spending in other areas. I would not be surprised if they are not including The web series Forward Unto Dawn into that as that must have cost a pretty penny. Also it is kinda a precursor to the series and halo 4 in a way.

I must say that I was hoping (maybe too much) for your comments on last weeks Rab Florence games journalists article (that got him fired). Now either the whole debacle is not interesting enough, or Geoff Keighley's photo in the front cover pissed someone off at GT.

Good show overall.

Brent fixed his card in the intro.

That's all I have to say.

Ok, no, I admittedly have kind of a bad relationship with Rockstar, as a gamer first and foremost on PC. Max Payne was ok, technically, it performed okay except during cutscenes for some reason. I have yet to play LA Noire, but I haven't heard complaint on that. So why have they, as of yet, failed on their larger franchises, the most praised ones? GTA IV was a wreck that wasn't fixed over the time it took them to put out the DLCs as well. Red Dead Redemption never even came out. Maybe they knew it was going to suck at that stage, but that's not to their credit. It's like UbiSoft, and Assassin's Creed 3 coming next year for PC, or things like saying forget the Prince of Persia (the 2008 one) DLC containing oh, just the fucking ending, PC users, forget about it forever. There's ways to do this that don't involve treating us like we're not the ones who pay for your games too, and no, the piracy excuse has been proven wrong by productions like The Witcher. So well, get back in line, Rockstar, Ubisoft and the likes of you.

Oh, and I understand Fox still has the rights for the Star Wars movies for a while?  So they're probably going to go for new content, toys and stuff like that, which is why their f irst announcement was about movie #7. Possibly, probably.

In regards to the e-sports thing; I really have no idea how many people like to watch e-sports, but I also wonder how many people watch rugby, golf, tennis, or other things. I very rarely hear anyone mention them, yet they are considered mainstream popular sports. You don't have to be NBA or NFL level to be considered popular or mainstream, so why not e-sports.

On the topic of scary games, I think a feeling of helplessness is what creates a truly scary atmosphere. And with these new Resident Evil or Dead Space games, you play a badass and there a guns and ammo everywhere so that feeling just isn’t present. At best you can get a couple of jump scares out of them, but that’s about as scary as they get.

Also, I remember playing F.E.A.R. which I really liked. It had these sections with Alma which scared the shit out of me in the first half of the game. But then I realised that these segments where completely scripted and that she wouldn’t actually hurt me. Any feeling of anxiety disappeared with that realisation. After that moment, every time I saw Alma I knew there weren’t going to be any enemies for a second so I had a couple of seconds to scratch my balls, which was nice.

A game like DayZ on the other hand, is really fucking scary. Ammo and guns are rare, when it’s dark its pitch black and no one is to be trusted. Now that shit is scary because you really feel helpless. I would also like to give an honourable mention to the 360 launch game Condemned. A first person shooter where you almost never have ammo and therefore are forced to use pipes, two by fours and locker doors. A fantastic underrated game that people need to check out if they haven’t.

Today I 'ave been mostly rememberin': Great Gaming Gaffs

Hello fellow Axeheads! As the great AVGN would say; "What a shitload of fuck!" I am, of course, referring to the Xbox One. Everyone has been frothing at the mouth and having seizures over the calamitous reveal.

Now... It's not really my place to jump on the wagon of despair. After all, I don't own an Xbox 360 and…

Dear Microsoft

Hi Microsoft its me, the little guy who's been buying your consoles for the last ten years. Just wanted to let you now how excited I was by your new console reveal. Sure I would have liked to see more games (maybe even one being played) but I get why you didn't go that route. The reveal was a focus on the system itself right and you wanted to keep it relevant to actual specs and functionality, like when you announced a Halo TV show. Things like that were why people tuned in and I'm sure its…

Modern Games:1. Arkham Origins - Prequel? or Set up for one More Arkham game?

Hello Everyone, this is my first blog and I want to talk the Arkham series and it got me thinking. After watching the Official trailer i had the thought ... if this the beginning of the Cape crusader, will there be references going into Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. For example In the Arkham city when you are finding Ra's al Guhl, Talia keeps making reference of the league of shadows and how Batman did not proceed in finishing his initiation of the league. Another point, is this the start…

To close out the summer, Rockstar is bringing us my number 3 most anticipated game, GTA V. You might ask, why is this game only at the number 3 spot on the list? Well…
