TOPIC: E3 HOPES AND FEARS - With under a week to go until the industry’s most important event, Team EBC outlines its biggest hopes and fears pertaining to the games and hardware they expect (or want) at the show.

BATTLECRIES:

Hello gents. Great show.

I don’t expect this E3 to be different from previous ones in terms of new announcements. The so-called next gen has brought but a few IPs to the table, with companies betting instead on tried and true franchises.

Still, I would like to see new games both from first and third party studios.

Activision shouldn’t step outside its comfort zone, with Call of Duty and Destiny taking centre stage. A new Tony Hawk game could be announced and I would like to see something from Crash Bandicoot as well;

Aside from Battlefield, I expect EA to show something Star Wars related. My great wish is the revival of 1313;

As far as Ubisoft goes, the major reveals of the last two E3 have come from them (Watch Dogs, The Division). Will they do it again? Nevertheless, Assassin’s Creed and FarCry are guaranteed to show. I’m hoping for a new Prince of Persia...

Im still waiting for a generation that improves Ai. Its still, in some cases, on a 1995 level.

I agree T man. Zelda being a more realistic style instead of so stylized.. But what if they did it realistic style? Would we expect that for the next Zelda game as well? Zelda having a certain look then going cell shaded. I am not sure if it was the overall look, or if people were just tired of kid link or both. I loved the Windwaker game on GC. But I played it because I loved the style. But man a more realistic look for link would really make me bow down.

I too love Metroid.. its probably my favorite series from Nintendo. I really want to see a Metroid game, either prime style or SNES side scroll. Please show us something on either of those 2 titles and ill be on board.

Also what the hell happened to Star Fox?!

Also forgot to mention... a Metroid game without Samus is no Metroid... That would make me sad, though I wouldn't be totally close minded about it. Id like them to do a better job in establishing Samus's personality and back story. But to be honest im tired of reboots. A new character would help to set up a new adventure with a character we can grow to love. But the thing is we love Samus, they could use this chance to make her into a more solid character. Yeah shes a bad ass, we know that, they just need to make her more like "Lara Croft?" haha i dont know.. she just needs to be more relatable i guess. I think at this point changign the character would be like changing Mario. I just cant see Nintendo replacing her.

Great Episode!

Re: Delays, Delays.  Personally, I see it as a good thing that these games are getting delayed.  Because of this console switchover to the next gen, and the fact that Watch Dogs seems to have shat the bed in terms of expectations vs. reality, I think that the powers that be have learned by vicarious means that rushing their games to market can come back to hurt you with paying users (even though pirates seem to have been pretty happy with it...)

Sure, it's a trade off. People get angry. But that October 7th release date was pretty cramped. Aaaand, this gives them more time to get a better install base for their game...?

Re: Homefront.  I would be more excited by this open-world concept if, and only if, they got some new AI over there at Crytek.  Crysis games were fun, but their AI was horrible. In an open world you need a lot of AI and if it's all at the level of their Crysis games then we are all in for a bumpy, messy, ride.

Re: Watch_Dogs. I am happy for Ubisoft with so many copies sold of this game.  With all the troubles every single one of my friends have had with it on PC it's pretty amazing that they have overcome all the negative sentiment on-line about their Digital Distribution monstrosity (U-Play).  I like to think that the sales for this game call more attention to gamers' hunger for new IP and games that don't have a number or Roman numeral attached to the end of it...  But as for what they do next?  I hope, I hope, they take that profit and pour it into making U-Play functional!

Alright! Good EBC this week.

Woot woot for Swedens Independence Day!

Ok so E3:

Witcher 3.. Thats all I want and all I need.

However, for a proper comment I will adress a few things I'm excited for.

Saw the CDPR/GOG Summer Conference ( Also this trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtVdAasjOgU ) and now I need TW3 more than ever and it is in 2015.. The PAIN! So I feel your pain Brent, Batman Arkham Knight 2015?! Another game I wanted to play this fall moved to next year. Sigh..

Mortal Kombat X looked interesting.

Watch Dogs is as broken as Battlefield 4 was and BF4 sold lots in the beginning too. Well BF4 is still a bit wonky.

My hopes for E3 are SWKotOR 3 from Bioware and some nice trailers from CDPR's Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Both scheduled for 2015, interesting that the 2 games from CDPR will compete with eachother for GOTY and Best RPG of 2015.

I'd like to see some more news about DA3 since it is the first RPG with the Frostbyte Engine and Mordor since it seems that in this title the NPCs has had more work put into them than the actual player.

New IPs for the "NextGen" would be very appriciated. I'd like to be surprised.

Red Dead a permanent franchise? As long as we can have a good ending to those games I'm fine with it, don't want to be pissed off so close to the end of a game.

Done Bear.

Hi Guys!

A sterling show as always this week, but I'm afraid I have to bring down the Abber-Hammer on all o y'all. You were all, even Brent, too soft on this rising 'bait and switch' trend from games publishers and developers.

Like Brent, I don't want to be 'That Guy' going into E3 this year, but do I really have any choice? With the complete and utter bullspit that we've been fed over the last few years with games like Duke Nukem Forever, Aliens Colonial Marines, Battlefield 4, Watch Doges (even Forza 5 had a technical downgrade) and now delay after delay after delay after delay because, and lets be honest here, creators are struggling hard and failing fast to deliver the promises they make about their games. Do you honestly think The Division is going to look THAT good when it's finished? On a skynet computer, maybe, if they can be bothered to optimize it.

No. I for one will no longer stand to have this crap wantonly shoved down my gullet in the vain hope of gaining my pre-order and giving the suits one more brownie point at their investors meeting.

Screw you bunch of liars and screw your unrealistic deadlines and your unscrupulous efforts to scrape another point on the Dow Jones. This year I'm headed into E3 with a massive dose of skepticism and a healthy helping of realistic expectation, because as impressive as all the trailers and gameplay may look, you can't see squat with the wool pulled over your eyes.

Bring it E3, I got my baseball bat and my chewin' tabbacy at the ready.

When Tony and DK were mentioning that they were scared that Nintendo was just going to show a teaser for Zelda, I'm not sure that it fits Nintendo's treatment of PR with their large franchises right now. If you look at how they promoted Super Smash, Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze, and Mario Kart, they left little to nothing left for the imagination. They announced the heck out of both of these titles and didn't really release much of a "teaser".

While Zelda is a bit different and more mature than these other more casual fanchises, it seems that Nintendo spends all its efforts to show of what little it does have coming out. I think that they could take a break and just make a few trailers and we would be just as excited about their IPs.
Instead it seems like they try to shove it down our throats and over hype games to the point where we get annoyed with them (at least I do).

Personally, I'm going crazy to get my hands on a console Zelda or Star Fox. But, I think that if they just deliver a IP hype machine, it will seriously turn me off.

Hey great show guys, I loved the points that you all made in terms of your hopes and fears, and I feel that the point that stuck out most to me was new IP's. Innovation and new ideas are welcome but at this point I would just be happy if we start seeing just new IP's with a bit more frequency this next generation.

While it is true we have gotten great IP's over the seventh generation to the tune of titles such as Mass Effect and Journey, I think one of the most glaring and obvious traits of the last generation was the regular churning out of games in a series, especially the serializing into yearly entries. Assassin's Creed, Call of Duty, Battlefield, almost any Sports title, and even the Arkham games to an lesser extent now I think while these have all had their moments they have greatly exasperated the idea of series fatigue. The point of Hardline trudging the Battlefield moniker along is especially apt.

One of my biggest hopes going into E3, and by extension going into the deep end of the Eighth generation, is that the industry will learn to let properties have their own identities. I want to start getting into games more on their merits of being a new title, or being from a talented developer rather than making sure there's a serialized word (CoD, BF, AC, Arkham, etc) on the box. I want to be excited that it's an Ubisoft game, rather than an Assassin's Creed, that it's a Rocksteady Batman, rather than an Arkham game. I want more new IP rivalries like we had with Infamous and Prototype because, while I don't think both were stellar (Infamous being my preferred) it sparked a want to improve.

Thankfully it seems the industry is taking a step in that direction, Watch Dogs and Titanfall proving successful on the merits of their developers and showing. My favorite game this generation so far is Nintendo's newest idea in a while, Wonderful 101. On top of that recent titles like Last of Us, even if it had some oscar-bait qualities to it, was a great performing new title. I'm certainly not saying I want ONLY new stuff, getting our good performers again is also something I want, hey welcome back Mario Kart my good buddy! Good to see ya again Smash Bros! Batman! How ya Doin'!?! --- but I hope we are more often excited by these great talents trying to start the new franchises as well.

This is of course tempered by the fear that this mini-Renaissance could have only been inspired by the fact that we're updating hardware and nothing else, and that a year or two from now we'll be back into the comfortable groove of getting mostly serialized titles each year. Hopefully this won't be the case, but who knows. Anyway, that's my BattleCry, can't wait to see your thoughts on E3!
