For my birthday i received black ops 2 from my family. I did not buy it because with each call of duty i enjoyed it less and less. My friends all still play it so i installed it to grab a game with them every now and then. Right now ive leveled up to rank 53. Which gave me enough of gametime to pass judgement on it.

Before i continue i must say that ive been playing first person shooters for about 20 years now and ive played everything from wolfensten 3d, doom and unreal tournament to battlefield, call of duty and crysis and everything in between. Fps games are my first choice of games and eventhough i never turned pro i can say that no matter which shooter it is i lead the ranks in public games. Bragging or not, it is what it is.

With that said i must rage a little about black ops 2. Not the game or gameplay in general, this is at least better than modern warfare 3, but about what they have done to what seems to be lag compensation. For those who dont know, this is something put in a game to counter lag and make a game 'more fair'. The game calculates the lag and makes a descission based upon that. Battlefield 3 has such a compensation in place but im not sure if black ops 2 has this as well. To me it is the only explanation to the following...

Because of years of gaming my hand eye coordination is pretty good. Well above average at least. Yet in black ops 2 everyone out guns me. Im not exagerating here either. Even the slowest trigger of our clan has above human reflexes these days. 9 out of 10 players are aimed at me before even coming around the corner. And i know pre fire like no other. Previous call of duties and other games have been filled with it. This is something completely different.

There are moments where i draw a full second faster than my enemy, he is standing still, 2 feet away from me and he still manages to kill me. Only for my bullets to disappear without even getting a hitmarker. One or two times its weird, but after 20 hours of the same experience i can honestly say it doesnt matter how fast you are. The game decides wether you live or die. At least in battlefield 3 you both die.

To me this is extremely frustrating. I still get good scores and end up on top a lot of times but it is totally unsattisfying. It makes me weary for future games. It almost seems like its programmed to meet the masses. So everyone can feek like a winner. And if thats the case than i have a very bad feeling about the next generation.

Yeah Black Ops 2 has been basically broken since day one. I was really looking forward to it because I love the original Black Ops, but it's just to frustrating to know that lag kills you more than you actually making a mistake. At least the campaign is good.

I have the same issue with black ops 2 on the PC and I have really good internet connection. In mw3 I had over 2.0 i kill/death ratio and now in blops 2 I have had to struggle to get 1.8.

I also think that this lag compensation contradicts the nube-tube and other noob-friendly weapons that is put into cod games to give green gamers incentive to continue playing.

@martin, all the guns i have tried feel pretty much the same to me. they are (so far) all spray & pray guns. Both SMG's and Assualt Rifles. I've also noticed that people barely aim down sight anymore because firing from the hip is "accurate" enough already.. specially with the laser sight on it. I can fire from the hip and get a head shot across the street with ease. It all seems to be balanced towards No Skill Is Still A Kill.

@Josh, i haven't tried the campaign yet but all previous COD's felt the same to me. Boat trip here, chopper trip there, car trip next... been there done that. I'll probably play through it once to see what's up but i'm not looking forward to it to be honest. So until im out of games i like and not completely bored out my mind it wont get touched.

@Talis12 I totally understand where you're coming from, but Black Ops 2 is a completely different beast than the previous games. The story is very personal and has central characters, plus it has many branches and multiple endings that are very well done. In fact there are a few choices that don't really present themselves as black or white, and you may not even know they are choices when you make them.

@Talis12, I am so used to aiming down sight so I really can't stop, which often is the end of me, even on longer distances :)

@josh, ive heard of the choices part. I watched the video they did on gamespot about it. Frankly, watching one person die or the other would make a difference if i was attached to the character. So for no cod game has managed that though.

There is a lot more to the choices than that though. They are in almost every level in some way, it has many branches.

Identifying with games and game characters

This is actually just a copy-paste of my most recent comment on this weeks Axe Factor. I've long intended this as a blog post, which is why it appears here as well.

I haven't heard the podcast yet, but I felt like writing a response to the question to this weeks poll, "Have you ever had a "That's Me!" experience with a video game character?"

The answer is yes. One of the most powerful gaming experiences for me the last couple of years have been To The…
