Hello fellow AxeHeads. I bring forth a question.

Two weeks ahead of me buying a PS4 my four-year-old Ps3 died. Well, that’s not exactly true. The fan blew up (or short-circuited, I don’t know). The console still works, if only for five to ten minutes before shutting down due to intense heat.

Here’s my problem: around 80% to 85% of my gaming library is made of Ps3 games, including some I haven’t played yet.

I’m currently battling with three scenarios:

1) buy a new Ps3 to replace the old one;

2) buy a Ps4 and star anew;

3) buy both.

Considering that I’m presently finishing my thesis, bills + two consoles + tuition = starvation; getting a Ps3 means I’ll have to hold off (at least) until July for a Ps4; buying a Ps4 means I won’t be able to play most of my games.

And so, I throw myself at you mercy in search of wisdom.

Please, sound off below and let me know your opinion...

Oooh. Tough call. There are a few titles coming out for the PS4, but that will mean plopping down more cash to get them. Both would be the option I'd opt for, but time and money are a consideration. My PS3 died last summer but I did not want to wait to get a PS4 since I had too many games in my pile of shame. I'd say get the PS3 since you'll probably get another one anyway eventually to play the unplayed titles. When it comes time to get a PS4, though the price won't be any less (probably) the game library will be more robust and less expensive.

OR

What about sending in the PS3 for repair? Most likely it'll only cost $99, or so I hear. Repair it and get a PS4.

PS3, there really aren't enough games yet on PS4 to make it worth losing all that PS3 goodness.

OR!

-1-

Grab a vacuum cleaner and face it to the fan grill.

Give it sometime to clear of some of the dust.Turn the devil off!

Hold the eject button then turn on your PS3.Let it do its' thing!

( possibly do a new dust sweep )

Turn on the PS3 again and  let me know if this improves the situation.

-2-

Look into repairing the fan by yourself or by handing it to a PRO!

-3-

Buy a PS4 and keep an eye on the PS3 prices down the line, it is inevitable that you're going to be able to pick one up for dirt cheap at some sale or if you can wait ( Black Friday )

good point. I had some fan issues too once. I did a fan cleaning and it prolonged the life of my console for quite some time.

In lieu of fixing the fan you have, take the HDD out and back it up to another one.  Sell the PS3, get a PS4, when you find a cheap PS3 in the future, install said HDD.

Another way to look at it, with the games on the HDD you will have access to them in the future, but as you are doing your thesis you probably wont have a lot of time to play so make the most of the PS4 zeitgeist.

OR, get a PC ;)

Get another PS3.  It has more games and PSN gives you more games vs the PS4 as well.  I got my PS4 on launch and truthfully, the games are good but there are not enough of them(expected launch).  I believe you will get more for your buck by getting the older system and waiting.  July is not that far away and by then hopefully some great games will be released.

If you buy a PS4 now, providing you can find one, you will have to buy new games that will set you back even more.  Most are already available on the previous console that you already have.  As a video console collector its also great to have a backup.  Do you really want to purchase games for a newer system that you already own on the previous gen.  To me, its just a waste of money.  Maybe Playstation Now would help but its still buying older games to play on current systems.  I believe its a convenience thing.  Good luck on whatever you do and remember....

Buy a new fan and repair it?

If not, i would buy a new PS3 myself in your situation. PS3's aren't that expensive anymore and there arent much good games on PS4 now anyways. (not many you wouldnt be able to play on other devices anyways)

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I’m also leaning towards a new Ps3 and holding off until the Ps4 library starts growing.

I was looking forward to playing InFamous on launch, but oh well.

I’m gonna try fixing it of course. It’s my baby!

Tomorrow I’ll take it to my local IT shop so they can assess the damage and give me a repair budget – if repair is possible at all.

On the other hand, I’m not sure if I want to do this. The fact is my console was dying before all this happened. Cut-scenes were slow, gameplay was slow, loading took longer than usual... At first I thought it was fragment as all hell, so I cleaned it using the debug menu; it worked for a while, but things got worse after that. My second thought was dust, so I opened the unit – this was back in November of last year – and cleaned it top to bottom. Nothing changed.

I do believe a new unit is the way to go, but I’ll wait and see.

Thanks again   :)

Alternatively you could also get a PS Vita, cheaper than the PS4, has games from both PS3 and PS4, has PSN PLus free games, later on you will be able to cross play games you have already purchased, especially if cross bought as well.

Thanks Kyuss, but I already own a Vita...  ;)

Axefactor 180. We Get What We Deserve

I would love to change my username to DaySixEdition games.

Greetings fellow Axeheads.  I am once again compelled to write my thoughts in the same theme I wrote every other time in relation to the AxeFactor #180.  Our glorious Axelords Brent and Lorin again ponder as to why it is that our industry treats us like crap.  There is even a pole again for us to express what we feel about the situation.

The pole is missing the ''The industry treats us as we deserve.''   Which is what…

AC: Unity - The good, the bad and the ugly

The good:

- Graphics. It looks stunning and the amount of NPC's roaming through the city give the game a nice ambiance and make the city come to life like no other game has ever done before.

- Interiors. Much more inside buildings now. Fast short cuts through a house or complete missions taking place in a palace. Not every house is accessible but there is plenty of them to make it divers.

- Riddles. Less hand holding this game. Riddles and murder cases to tease the…

Hatred is not about violence & here's why

PSA: Nothing I am saying is meant to be inflammatory or antagonizing. I am simply informing you the reader on my personal take of the Hatred controversy now that it has been several weeks and we can really take a step back to examine what the issue is.

The Hatred controversy is not about Violence in video games... Hatred is not about Grand Theft Auto, Hatred is not about Halo, heck Hatred is not about Boondock Saints or even Sons of Anarchy. Hatred is about Columbine, there I…
