Gaming's Most Epic Community. Cry Havoc and Let Your Voice Be Heard!

I just finished playing Rage on the PC. It got pretty good scores on most big sites. I thought it was horribly unfinished and claustrophobic.
Invisible walls everywhere.
Glitchy car controls (hate those "rocket rallies")
Bullet sponge enemies.
Recycled maps (really? The same stages twice?)
Some obviously scrapped ideas due to lack of development time
(Theres a casino! I want to use it)
Anti-climactic ending!

After playing that I started up Duke Nukem: Forever, which we all know got a pretty brutal reception in the press.
I... really... liked it.

DN:F doesn't try to be anything its not. Sure there are some tedious moments. But its simple, to the point.
Rage on the other hand starts off really grandiose and pretentious. You get the feeling you will be swamped in quests and that there will be plenty of exploring.

Why do I listen to the press?!
I think Ill give other games that has been poorly received a try now.
I'll start with Postal 3.

I tried playing RAGE on two occasions, both when it came out on 360 and just this past month on PC. I can't for the life of me get into it. It looked gorgeous, but it feels horribly constricted and monotonous; maybe it was because I was hoping for it to emulate Fallout 3 in some ways, not be a corridor shooter with an open-world veneer. I got maybe 20 mins past where I quit years ago and promptly quit again.

So far, this year has helped me discover and greatly enjoy two games that I ignored when they first released -- Max Payne 3 and BioShock 2. It's a shame RAGE wasn't able to join them.

I agree with you on the amount of quests or lack there of and the boring repeaters. The enemies however i dont agree with. Maybe they are bulletsponges but they are also some of the most daring ones. The way they attack you and seek cover is well programmed. Something most games can learn from.

I really enjoyed the AI! I loved the way the melee-enemies bounced from side to side and how the squads moved. But when an enemy just shrugs after 10+ headshots isn't fun.

I found Rage to be "ok" I played it once and was done with it. DN:F was the biggest pile of wank I have ever played. To this day I still feel like I was conned out of $60. I loved the previous Duke games but DN:F (aptly titled since they "DNF"ed the end product) was void of any of the original , if twisted, Duke charm. Clunky physics, terrible shooting mechanics, God-awful graphics. Steaming pile, I thought.

Well this is how I see it. Duke certainly isn't worth 60$, I feel for you there! But just as you cannot expect a stupid movie like Airplane to be up to par with The Godfather, even though the tickets cost the same, Rage has such pretentions, and is a half finished Matrix with placeholder actors and whole chapters of the script ripped out.

I'm not angered by the fact Rage exists. I hate the fact that reviewers obviously get bought to give favourable reviews. Just look at metacritic and compare critic/user -reviews.

That makes me feel much more duped than after buying Duke. I mean, Duke 3D was stupid with poor controls and a non-existent story. And DN:F was pretty much what I thought it was gonna be.

I've never had an interest in Duke, so maybe that factors my feelings on it, but did anyone really expect Forever to be a hit or match its old appeal? Duke is basically a 90s action movie hero, and even action movie tropes have progressed and matured over the years. The only options are keep him outdated for nostalgia's sake or rewrite him for the action movies of today -- not unlike something like The Expendables -- and upset the fanbase; neither is a reliable option that would lead to the sales newer games bring in.

Beyond that, it was in development hell for over a decade, consistently changed and rewritten for new tech, went through layoffs at its parent company, then migrated to a different company to be released in less than a year after its final release announcement. Anything that could be stellar after all that would truly be a miracle.

In any case, it's good to see Duke did succeed to some extent. :)

Dear Microsoft

Hi Microsoft its me, the little guy who's been buying your consoles for the last ten years. Just wanted to let you now how excited I was by your new console reveal. Sure I would have liked to see more games (maybe even one being played) but I get why you didn't go that route. The reveal was a focus on the system itself right and you wanted to keep it relevant to actual specs and functionality, like when you announced a Halo TV show. Things like that were why people tuned in and I'm sure its…
