I agree its mostly to do with hype, there were some articles out there who had hands-on with the preview and gushed praise for it and there were a few out there who found quirks with it but were ultimately excited about it. Looking back it seems like the journalists could've been mislead, perhaps playing a different version of the game we got to purchase, otherwise, I think its not wholly unfair to say we as customers were misled by Gearbox and the press.

Personally, I didn't feel much for the first gameplay demo, I though it just felt a bit too 'floaty' for my liking. Similar to Brent I went against my own rules, if this had been for any other title I wouldn't have ended up preordering this sack of sh*t.

Just Wanted to say that the whole studio has a huge smile on their face after listening to this and seeing Ether One as the cover for this podcast. You guys got the concept perfectly and we're really excited to show everyone more of what we're working on. Thank you!!!! :) :)

i think playing a preview/early build still gives a good indication of the quality of the game (though granted mostly depends on how much more development time still has)

I do recall one mag with previews they would highlight the positives but if there was any concerns they would mention them

I haven't always, but now I totally ignore review scores. I'm extremely suspicious towards major reviewing sites, and I'm certain there are some settlements made between publishers and big name reviewers.

Heyo!

Tomb Raider is a game I too have a media blackout on. But compared to Aliens CM this game is a priority and not a game that is an afterthought. I'm really excited to wield our fearless maiden again, this time it seems we get to really know her on a more personal level and we might get to see her trademark twins. Her guns fellas sheesh, not her.. Sigh. Anyway, I have pre-bought Tomb Raider for $29.99, pretty decent pricing for a new game I must say.

Also Crysis 3 is soon to be released and I'm really wanting to see how much my PC will cry from this beauty. Pre-bought Crysis 3: Hunters Edition for $39.99, pretty good price I think.

Gaming media is a sea of sharks with different taste in meat. Some like seals some like fish, other types like squid and some like starfish.. They might like starfish. Anyway what I'm trying to convey here is everything is subjective, some like tea some like coffeh some like beer some like mead.. some likes all of that and some likes none of that. But gaming media is very unreliable since most of it is oppinions and some get bribed to tell good things about a perticular game and some might not even review or cover a game for prior reviews or remarks.

Review sites, gaming magazines and gaming journalists often have embargos or what they call it that makes you not being able to talk about or show your footage for the game in perticular until a certain date or a say so from the devs/pubs. So that can also filter some of the initial reaction and when they can talk about the game some of the oppinions may have changed a bit or they just release the material they had earlier compiled.

I usually just go with initial and semi-early information, screenshots and game footage to see if I'm interested in a title or if a certain game company is releasing a game from a series that I love I don't need to see more since now a days game trailers and movie trailers show too much, even twists and certain plots that you don't want to see beforehand. Too much footage and story details are spoiled now a days, that makes me very frustrated and irritated.

I want sneak peeks and some initial story/gameplay trailers those are great. Most trailers now a days, especially ltrailers for games or movies whos trailers have been released need to get out more trailers to keep people interested in their title give too much information and then you almost don't need to play or see the media in question.

Well that is what I think. That is it from me and have a good one Axehead army! Stay Frosty!

So, I'm just going to say it: Aliens: Colonial Marines isn't a terrible game.

Ok, so it's overwhelmingly mediocre in every regard and certainly isn't the title the Alien franchise deserved, but there were brief moments of fun in my Ultimate Badass solo play-through and more in my second, co-op play-through, with a friend. I understand there's a great deal of reverence for the IP – I've been waiting for this game for a very long time – consequently, Aliens: Colonial Marines was always going to come up against a weight of expectation that was completely unachievable.

Had I not pre-ordered it back in November, would I be playing it now? Hell no! Would I have rented? I expect so. It's just unfortunate that it's taken the critical failure of a game (financially, it's doing rather well here in the UK) in a franchise beloved by so many to highlight the inadequacies of previews, reviews and "game journalism" in general. If Aliens: Colonial Marines does nothing else but make the consumer think a little more carefully about their buying practices, it's a legacy that justifies its mediocrity.

Thomas F Wilson is Biff Tannen, although he gets credited as Tom Wilson now.

Anyone else having seriously slow download speed for the podcast? took me over an hour.
Enjoyed the show, keep it up.
I do check out reviews, but I wouldn't say they affect my purchase decision. Usually I see media from a game and then I usually know if this is a game I'm interested in getting or not. The review checking part is just more of a curiosity point.

Today I 'ave been mostly rememberin': Great Gaming Gaffs

Hello fellow Axeheads! As the great AVGN would say; "What a shitload of fuck!" I am, of course, referring to the Xbox One. Everyone has been frothing at the mouth and having seizures over the calamitous reveal.

Now... It's not really my place to jump on the wagon of despair. After all, I don't own an Xbox 360 and…

Dear Microsoft

Hi Microsoft its me, the little guy who's been buying your consoles for the last ten years. Just wanted to let you now how excited I was by your new console reveal. Sure I would have liked to see more games (maybe even one being played) but I get why you didn't go that route. The reveal was a focus on the system itself right and you wanted to keep it relevant to actual specs and functionality, like when you announced a Halo TV show. Things like that were why people tuned in and I'm sure its…

Modern Games:1. Arkham Origins - Prequel? or Set up for one More Arkham game?

Hello Everyone, this is my first blog and I want to talk the Arkham series and it got me thinking. After watching the Official trailer i had the thought ... if this the beginning of the Cape crusader, will there be references going into Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. For example In the Arkham city when you are finding Ra's al Guhl, Talia keeps making reference of the league of shadows and how Batman did not proceed in finishing his initiation of the league. Another point, is this the start…

3. GTA V (September 17)

To close out the summer, Rockstar is bringing us my number 3 most anticipated game, GTA V. You might ask, why is this game only at the number 3 spot on the list? Well…
