Wow, Lorin is willingly playing Dishonored. Is the end of the world coming?

I would highly recommended Brent to give it a chance too.
I think the reason why it is not much enjoyable at the beginning is fact, that it is primarily a stealth game and those are based around mastery of mechanics, which takes time.
I had similar problem with Mark of Ninja. I was bored to death first 2 hours, but after getting through all tutorials and learning how everything works, I loved it.
Dishonored is not about experiencing groundbreaking story but about having a sandbox, tools and figuring out how to utilize those tools to reach your goal and defining your own playstyle.
Second important pillar is exploration. Arcane built with help of Viktor Antonov (Half-life 2 art director) one of the most amazing worlds I have ever seen in a game.
It has distinct atmosphere, varied color palette and great architecture and industrial design.
Last but not least, you can feel like evil motherfucker, if you choose to.

I've got an aging desktop that needs replacing so I've started to look at purchasing a laptop. I can get something that would suit my needs for under a grand, but then I thought about shelling out extra for something a little more future proof and that could handle some PC gaming on higher end settings.

I have 100% interest in Titanfall but 0% interest in owning an Xbox One. by adding the retail price of the Xboxone to my laptop budget I think I could get something pretty decent on which to play Titanfall and revive my long dormant Steam account.

I loved Walking Dead Season 1, but for some reason don't feel any interest in playing Season 2.

great episode guys!!!

the topic this episode about valve and VAC system is something I think get blown up to something big because, of all the other things we hear about other things like NSA and so on. We are being watched that for sure and the question is to all this is it bad or good. I think what valve is doing is good because hackers out there hurt online play no mater what game it is and I am sure other online games MMO/multiplayer are doing it.

I think its good that we ask companies what are you monitoring so we keep them in check to make sure that there is some "control" over what they monitor and can legally do but in the end its just a fact that with all the cyber crime/hacking/cracking happing they have to do something. I personally give my webcam the finger every now and then that if someone is watching that they know they are wasting there time and should be doing something else.

I'm so glad you are looking at Dishonored again, because it was one of my favorite games of this generation. The freedom you have there, the different ways you can go through the game really pulled me in. And the world of course... Hope you are enjoying it Lorin, and that Brent gives it another shot.

My biggest concern is always online banking or sensitive online information getting into the mix. I have no problem if say Sony tracks whatever I do when I play a game over PSN. But when it comes to a PC I do more than just gaming. As long as no one intercepts my tracking data, and if the anti-cheat system only checks for a positive match and then scraps the rest of the data I am fine.

I'm with Starbound.  It's bad enough Steam made us accept DRM as it is.  I don't need the U.S. government knowing that I do, anymore than they already do.

Which technically, is spying, because I am a foreign national.  Hail, Canada.

I happen to be rather interested in deep down. A japanese company doing free-to-play gives me pause, but it's an itneresting demo for the new panta rhei engine which seems to be living up to MT frame-works graphical standards for sure. Also it having the same director who did dragon's dogma is a huge plus to me. (If you got the chance to redeem it when it was free on PS plus, that'd be an interesting game to go back to someday.)

I can't offer you a rockstar/bound by flame style gameplay demo/trailer, but I can show you half an hour of people playing a level at TGS if it gives you a clearer idea of the gameplay. Basically it's a procedurally generated dungeon crawler/RPG. The modern day conceit seems to be that in the future of new york 2095 people are discovering artifacts that allow them to view events in the past of the people who went into these dungeons but yeah, that's still pretty fuzzy. The original trailer had some kind of messaging system with an icon of blanka from street fighter so I can only assume that's related to some sort of player messaging system.

It's hard to really get what's going on but it does look very cool when they suddenly have a 4 player boss fight just sort of happen all of a sudden, the dragon fight really shows off some gorgeous visuals so it's easy to see why people doubted it was in engine before. (That said I was one of those "if it was pre-rendered, the dragon's head wouldn't of clipped through a pillar" people from the start. xD) Some of the magic seems super interesting too, with force-fields and time manipulation .etc on display. I'd like to see new footage from the perspective of some of the other classes people were playing in that video though besides the spear wielder.

Very well put together show, as always! Loved the intro for Lorin too!

I thought Dishonored was a decent little game but nothing special for the genre. I was having a lot of fun with it by mid-way through but it fell apart at the end for me. I didn't have any trouble getting into it initially. I couldn't even explain to you what my problem was... it just wasn't all that special. Maybe I should have played on hard because on normal I found it easy to murder my way through the game... Actually that's the problem! It's a stealth game where it is way too easy and way more satisfying to murder your way through than it is to avoid combat and being seen. Good stealth games are generally quite the opposite.

Titanfall beta was great and I think I said as much in my comment on EBC last week!

Deep Down - don't care.

Valve - will only get more evil but the VACS has always seemed harmless to me. I mean, Google have more info on me than anyone. I still use the engine. I figure by this point, they already have all the dirt they need on me so there is little point worrying. :)

This week I'm playing:

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - beaten but lots of collectables to go!

Phantasy Star - really dated mechanics but fun!

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night  - why can't all games be this polished?

and I'm just about to jump into Broken Age which is only the second 2014 game I've got.

Great episode. Hey Brent, did you get a chance to play Last of Us Left Behind? Would love to hear your opinion. Also, I sent you a psn friend request a while back, did you get it?

Leigh Alexander Gets Fisked

So Leigh Alexander at Gamasutra, Luke Plunkett at Kotaku and Dan Golding (who has written for many places), have written articles on the same day, on the same subject. That's an interesting coincidence. It is also interesting that Chris Plante over at Polygon also had a very similar article, covering the same issues, on the same day though it was written more as a summary of the past week. Now there are time zones to consider but these were all published within 24…
