I'm really dissapointed in Nintendo's decision of excluding same sex relationships in Tomadachi Life. Fuck man, it's 2014...

So they don't want to make a game with "social commentary" yet the fact that they are purposefully excluding it makes them PART of the social commentary. So crazy that it's coming from Japan. Sometimes this place really pisses me off. I mean you have a high profile transsexual Haruna Ai (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ai_Haruna) and the (very dated) comedic stylings of Hard Gay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_gay) that the country just seems to fawn over. But when it comes to a (more or less) genuine dialogue about non-traditional lifestyles, suddenly it's taboo. It's okay for entertainment and a good laugh once in a while on a variety show, but to acknowledge it as a mainstream part of society, forget it. I dunno: maybe a bigger city like Tokyo is different and maybe this is just Nintendo.

And it's still america, and they still catch a lot of flack we don't talk about for stuff like that from parent's interest groups, and gay marriage is still banned in 33 states in the US. So... it's shitty, but I kind of get Nintendo's point. It's not their job to push a topic that will get them a lot of backlash for it in a certain region, though I really wish they would. The responsibility lies more though with the west to not find it a problem like in certain other regions. Spain for example hasn't had to worry about things like this in their versions of certain games.

You're probably right. I mean, I can just see the morning news over here all ablaze if they did include gay marriage. Still annoying. Maybe I am having a bout of culture shock. Back to Child of Light for some game therapy.

It's not even really the morning news that get's them, it's over-reactive parents and watchdog agencies and all the crap that hardcore gamers don't even really notice. Heck, I would love to feel represented in a game like this, but I don't really blame Japan for the way the english speaking West is.

I would comment on this status, but @Rowan knocked it out of the park, well put.

The game wasnt designed for same sex marriage in the first place. I understand its "2014" but if this wasnt the original vision for the game.

Identifying with games and game characters

This is actually just a copy-paste of my most recent comment on this weeks Axe Factor. I've long intended this as a blog post, which is why it appears here as well.

I haven't heard the podcast yet, but I felt like writing a response to the question to this weeks poll, "Have you ever had a "That's Me!" experience with a video game character?"

The answer is yes. One of the most powerful gaming experiences for me the last couple of years have been To The…
