A good gaming day: Watch Dog runs worlds smoother; had a great run in the new DayZ build - almost died; then rebounded nicely.

How's DAYZ progressing? I uninstalled months ago with horrible latency issues and repeated WTF dying to ladder clipping.

Slowly but surely. It may not seem so at first glance, but if you play for a while you'll notice many positive changes. As for server performance/latency, I've gotten into the habit of immediately testing the responsiveness of the server by interacting with the inventory and picking up/placing objects in the world. If I don't get near-instant response I move on to another server.

Recent changes:

1) Persistent loot

This is huge. I tested it out yesterday on experimental (which has since been pushed to stable) by unloading my entire inventory into a bush after I had broken my leg. I then rolled down the hill and intentionally got nom nom-ed by zombies, respawned, and every bit of my loot was still there. Sweet.

2) Respawning loot

No more logging into a server that's been cleaned out of loot!

3) Zombie ragdolls

What's not to like?

4) Zombie navmesh/pathfinding

It is now possible to lock zombies in a building, and keep them out of a building you're in. Does it work every time? No, but it's the first iteration and they're on the right track.

5) Hunting/fishing/crafting

It's now possible to live entirely off the land if you find the right tools for the job.

The bad:

Melee combat is horrible. Hits seem completely unrelated to where you've placed your reticule and you'll miss 90% of the time, while zombies still hit you from 10 feet away/2 floors down etc. This is very frustrating, especially as a fresh spawn with only a machete to defend yourself. However, it has been acknowledged in the latest changelog and I'm confident it'll be addressed soon.

The game is really starting to feel like a hardcore survival sim and I'm loving it.

Identifying with games and game characters

This is actually just a copy-paste of my most recent comment on this weeks Axe Factor. I've long intended this as a blog post, which is why it appears here as well.

I haven't heard the podcast yet, but I felt like writing a response to the question to this weeks poll, "Have you ever had a "That's Me!" experience with a video game character?"

The answer is yes. One of the most powerful gaming experiences for me the last couple of years have been To The…
