Rumor: PS4 will go for $429 and $529 and will phase out free online. http://ning.it/13bHTu3

I deleted my previous status that included the $60-80 subscription fee for PS World because it wasn't even mentioned in the article (my mistake). Angry Joe did tweet about the possible price of PS World ($60-80) but did not provide a source.

This source does mention the possibility that Sony will try to phase out free online, but there is no indication of the price. I really hope this is just a rumor because free online MP is a major selling point of the Playstation consoles and a huge differentiating factor to the Xbox.

Interesting. If they do have that price point and take a yearly fee for online play then one would think that it would include playstation plus in that deal, no? Or something similar to make the new online cost worth it.

I certainly hope it's not that expensive. I believe that if sony wants to sell a shit-ton of consoles on launch, they need to go for a 300-400$ pricetag tops. a decent price and online are the two things that will dictate weather i buy the console.

free online*

Free online MP is one if the biggest selling points against XBLA, it would be the dumbest thing Sony can do if they start charging for it. Now, I can understand if they move things like cross game chat, game streaming, video uploading etc to a PSN+ style subscription but online MP must stay free.

I'm with you Ry, the online MP definitely needs to remain free, but I would understand if the streaming and all the other features were added to the current PS+ model, but with a slightly increased price.  That would make the most sense to me.

Regarding the price of the console, I always thought it would be in the $400-500 range, but the $529 model is a bit much.  It's only $70 less than the launch price of the 60GB PS3.  I thought Sony said they learned from their mistakes...I just wonder what the differences must be between the two models.  Larger hard-drive perhaps?

It's always about the hard-drive... If Steam can roll their hardware for lower than $500, they have a really good chance of taking that market of affordable gaming consolde that has great game library and graphics to support it :)

And cost $899 in Australia -_-

While it would suck to pay for online play, it wouldn't be at all surprising (Sony need to find SOME way of subsidizing the service) and tbh I wouldn't mind paying 50-60 bucks per year IF it included a ustream and gaiki account with access to the full playstation back-catalogue (At least the first two generations anyway - I could understand a nominal fee for streaming PS3 titles)

For those who bitch that PS4 won't play your PS3 games, are you really THAT put out at leaving your current console plugged in? I'm surprised you can take the silver spoon out of your mouth long enough to bitch about it.

Although I'm not made of money, I don't mind TOO much shelling out for the online servce as long as it represents good value. Right now on Xbox, I pretty much pay twice for everything. I have an account with netflix, but can't access it without a gold subscription. I pay for Xbox live to play online but have to pay for an online pass if I buy second-hand. The only thing that XBL really provides as extra is party chat and that's always fucking up.

@Abberjam: hifi systems and LCD screens only have so many connectors. I got my PC and PS3 all connected in a very complex setup to use both stereo high fi boxes and quality headphones with an extra amp and DDheadphone converter. In no convenient way would I be able to add another console to the mix.

That said, it's been clear from the first rumours about PC-esque hardware that backward compatibility was not to be expected and that's the way of life. My PS3 doesn't play PS2 games either.

As for the annual fee, I always expected Sony to go for that as it worked great for MS and why would Sony leave money on the table. I am not happy with it and it really depends on what comes with it whether I will be willing to join. I always got the option to keep my online gaming limited to PC.

Dear Microsoft

Hi Microsoft its me, the little guy who's been buying your consoles for the last ten years. Just wanted to let you now how excited I was by your new console reveal. Sure I would have liked to see more games (maybe even one being played) but I get why you didn't go that route. The reveal was a focus on the system itself right and you wanted to keep it relevant to actual specs and functionality, like when you announced a Halo TV show. Things like that were why people tuned in and I'm sure its…
