“We shifted the launch of the game by several weeks into the third quarter. We believe this is the optimal time frame to release what is being hailed as the next generation of sandbox games.” That’s the reason Take Two’s CEO Ben Feder gave for the delay of the highly anticipated western-sandbox title Red Dead Redemption. However Take Two subsidiary, and Red Dead developer, Rockstar Games has a different take on the matter.
“We at Rockstar have always prided ourselves on the uncompromising quality of our games – and will always opt to take a bit longer to polish and fine-tune a game to be as perfect as possible when we think it necessary” a company representative says. “With Red Dead Redemption, we felt that these extra few weeks will make a big difference in helping us deliver you an experience beyond your expectations.”
So, whatever the cause, the bottom line is this: Red Dead Redemption‘s North American release date has slipped from late April to May 18th. The European release date remains unchanged on May 21st. Stay tuned for more.

I call this being afraid of releasing this game in the same week of SSFIV, that would be 20 bucks cheaper rather than a “polishing” issue.
But then again they are releasing the game two weeks after Splinter Cell, and in the same week that Alan Wake comes out. Then again they get better chance of sales if they go against a new IP exclusive to one console in the same price tag than one that many will buy cheaper for 40 and multiplatform.
The extra weeks will help on making final touches on the game, but that statement they release is in my opinion pure bullshit.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooo i need to play this game now oh cruel fate why must thou ruin my plans i was actually taking a vacation when this game is released i guess ill just stare at the wall until it comes out my sweet glorious fun filled wall youve bested me here rockstar for your cold hard revolver has pierced my heart and punctured my soul i fear i may never breathe until this game is released goodbye for now i shall retire to the boudoir and stare at the aforementioned wall i bid my fellow axeheads a fond ado
This should improve my april exam grades. Not too bothered, will wait.
As long as “Pony Friends 2″ for the DS comes out on March as promised to many fans of the franchise, Im ok with this game being delayed!
@SilverJC:
I love SF just as much as the next guy, but SSFIV isn’t anything for Take Two, or any other major publisher, to be worried about. The only people who are going to buy it, day one, are those who held off on getting the original and those who are still playing it.
Not to say those numbers are insignificant, but it will be decidely less than the original release last February. Splinter Cell and Alan Wake are far greater competitors.
I’d like to say the statement is BS, but the game has come along brilliantly, by all accounts. Yes, there was the whole deal with the alledged overtime abuse on Take Two’s part, but I’ve learned to take letters posted anonymously on the Internets with a grain of salt…
The UK date has been changed as it was announced for a 30th May release. I pre-ordered it… Damn…
I understand that this is very upsetting. I was just as excited as everyone else but I think with Rockstar it is never a bad thing if they decide to delay a game. Everyone knows that they will deliver an extremely rich experience and if they do have a delay that it is a necessary evil. In the end it will benefit the game and I for one will still be picking this title up on day one of its eventual release.
In the meanwhile maybe I’ll use the extra time to get caught up with some old westerns that I haven’t watched in along time. Unforgiven, Tombstone, Young Guns, The Man with No Name trilogy. If your really into the setting of this upcoming and soon to be masterpiece of a game, I recommend you do the same. After all these films are huge influences on the game developers who are making this game according to their facebook page.
Anywho fellow Axe-Heads …
