In an interview with Sega’s Mike Hayes and Sean Ratcliffe over at Wired, Hayes explains that he thinks it would be “arrogant” to look at how MadWorld performed in the market and then make the claim that it’s not the proper platform for hard-core games. Hayes continues, explaining that The Conduit is seen as a success and that Sega will continue to put out ‘core games for the Wii due to install base:
“And because the development costs can be less on Wii, that means you can sell less to be successful…. We can take more risks on the Wii.”
So how about it Axe Heads? What do YOU think about hard-core games on the Wii? Let your voices be heard!

I believe hard-core games are defined by realistic visuals of mutilations of some sort. After all, a game can be brutal, like for instance Castle Crashers, but nobody will call it hard-core, because of its cartoon like graphics.
That’s why I think, that a truly hard-core game must be as close to reality or as comprehensible as possible, which therefore excludes the Wii. Simply because every other console or PC can achieve a much more realistic look.
I’m not saying that the Wii shouldn’t have any hardcore games at all, but whoever is making hard-core games for the Wii is only doing it for the easy money.
So you’re saying that holding a controller while playing a shooter is “closer to reality” than aiming with the wiimote. Sure that makes sense… (do I even have to write *sarcasm*?)
I was merely refering to graphics, not the overall experience. As I said, I think the main characterstics of a hard-core game are based on its visuals.
Sure, swinging the wii remote like a weapon is more realistic than hitting some buttons, but you have to do that in many non-violent games too.
Without the gory visuals you won’t get a hard-core game, no matter how furiously you swing.
If AAA titles were multiplat, going to the Wii as well as the PS3 and Xbox 360, without cutting out any gameplay elements, I would always buy for the Wii.
I believe that the Wiimote is genius for FPS. Its just needs to have a game that will cement that.
Graphics over gameplay? Have u played a game like Metroid Prime 3? If u haven’t, try comparing it to a game with “good graphics” like halo. And if u just want gory visuals, try a game like madworld. And I just want to point out, I recognize that some wii games are absolute crap, but excluding wii from hardcore games is just wrong.
Well I just wanna say that hardcore games are just as possible on the wii as they are on any other console and probably even more since the wii has so much potential.
I don’t think that is the definition of hard-core gaming they were talking about. Using Madworld and The Conduit as examples I think they were emphasing the fact that there are Wii owners still want games they can seriously sink they’re time into over the usual pick and play fun party games.
Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime: Corruption and Punch Out could also be added to that list.
In terms of your argument though Red Nutria do you really think they shouldn’t bother because of the graphical limitations of the system. Wouldn’t that relagate the Wii to a market of its own where it never tried to compete with the other systems? With the install base they already have around the globe, 3rd parties can really capitalise as long as they put in the effort as seen with games like The Conduit. Would be silly to miss out, especially after hearing them say
“And because the development costs can be less on Wii, that means you can sell less to be successful…. We can take more risks on the Wii.”
@Supermans Doctor
Actually, when I started writing my post I had the same thought. Are they talking about demanding games, or just violent games? I went with the violence, since I didn’t see that much of The Conduit yet and pretty much everything I know about Madworld contains people dying in a variaty of unpleasant ways.
I’m not Wii gamer, even though I have access to one, but I wouldn’t have put Madworld into the category of hard-core games.
Again, I interpreted hard-core as violent, at which my thoughts stay the same.
As for hard-core games, I have to agree with you. In terms of a Wii game’s overall quality it sure is not in a market of its own, but when it comes to graphics it can only compete with games of the same platform.
@fat bird
Alright, I hope you read what I wrote just above.
I certainly put gameplay over graphics. Especially with today’s standards where you won’t find a really bad looking game.
This all was nothing more of a misunderstanding.
Well I’m glad we came to an understanding.
So anyways I just wanna ask to anyone out there: is Assassin’s Creed 2 coming to DS? (I just read this somewhere and I just wanna make sure)
As I believed it, this is going to both PSP and DS, but both will be different games in their own right.
@red_nutria, thanks for clearing that up. You may be right with MadWorld considering it has near to non replayablity factor.
cool. thanks dude!
