Sony is considering a price block for online content in used games with a system much like EA’s Online Pass, SCEE president Andrew House told GamesIndustry.biz.
“On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we’re broadly supportive of that. And we’re exploring actively the same option for our own content,” House said.
The casual announcement may stem from the apparent success of PlayStation Plus, Sony’s recent PSN subscription model, which House admitted is proving more profitable than he imagined.
“What I would say is that subscriptions are tracking at or above where our higher expectations were. Which is a way of saying in essence that we’re pleased,” House said. “I have a sense that there is a second tier of PSN users that are almost ready to sign up that are in something of a wait-and-see mode because they want to see a bit more of the roadmap and how it flows out and is it meaningful to them? Which is absolutely fair enough.”
For Sony, this indicates an obvious money pool that could just as easily be spent on online content for used games. However, House is not prepared to charge for everything. Yet.
“In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that’s something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today – a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles – on the fact that we’ve removed that major initial barrier to entry,” House said.
House added Sony is exploring “a range of different monetisation options that fit consumer needs,” which could roughly translate to a “wait-and-see” approach for Sony as well, as they try to find our pockets’ breaking points.
What does Sony’s active exploration of a used game price block mean for the industry, and for us? EA, Ubisoft and THQ are all on board already – is this the next great trend in used gaming and how will it affect your own shopping habbits? Let’s hear it all in the comments!

Why this Online Ass again? If Sony doesnt like the fact that people go online with Used games, they should ask for a yearly fee like MS does with Xbox Live. Then they can amp up the service, and be done with it. Dont get me wrong I dont mind free online (which technically isnt free, cause you pay for the cable and the use of internet), but this online pass only for used games is ridiculous. Will they ask money for copies that have become under the starting price? so if a game is like 3 years old and reaches 20 $ or euro’s should it be applied to those aswell? If you want to give something free, give it to all things free and DONT shove it in the used gamer’s ass SONY! Because online was always being “free” on your service. Why the F*** are used gamers being screwed over every time? what is wrong with buying a game second hand? I dont see them doing this with movies (besides the fact that most movies are being downloaded..). The games are legit copies of the game, not downloaded, only resold, WHICH IS YOUR FREAKING RIGHT AS A CONSUMER!! No matter what it says in any license “agreement” (which should be blacklisted, because of the infringment of ownership it gives. Ownership of the copy I mean off course, not the authorship)
Sry for the rant but I have had it with this BS. Maybe I should start a research at my law school and see what there can be cooked up.
Interesting that Sony sold systems under the assumption of “free online play” now they want to charge for used game multiplayer in an attempt to both generate more revenue and gain favor with 3rd party developers as it would put a huge hit on used game sales for the platform….all without actually having to improve PSN to make it’s stability on par with that of XBL.
I really thought that with a stronger exclusive lineup and better support for the move as opposed to kinect that Sony stood a chance of pulling ahead of Microsoft and becoming the number 2. It looks like they want to make sure that doesn’t happen. If Sony went ahead and did this Microsoft’s marketing strategy is easy “We don’t charge you extra for playing 2nd hand software”. A move like this would kill system sales at a time when they stand to make up alot of ground for this generation.
I really am starting to think the Game Overthinker is right. Sony has no idea what the hell they are doing as a game company.

Hey, if it’s help to protect the investment of the company and helps for future projects I don’t complain. Besides, at least on my side if I wanna buy a game for the online component I buy it new most of the time.
Damn that sucks. I highly doubt that Microsoft will apply this tactic as well. Will they really make you purchase a pass to play a used game online … while having to pay for the service that enables you to play online in the 1st place? I hope not.
I think this is the way it could go:
Gamers will play less multiplayer games and get the goods of the single player experience.
TO COUNTER THAT publishers will start making the SINGLE PLAYER PORTION WORST, which is already happening with Kane and Lynch 2 and some other games
since we would have shitier games GAMESTOP will sell games cheaper
AND THE CYCLE will go to RETARDED INFINITUM until we have a service like Steam for consoles.
And to further adress my point, what does Sony want to do with the money they generate out of this? maintaning servers? They dont even HAVE servers for games, those are done by their respective developers that made the game (except offcourse the games that Sony themself made). Is this model applicable only to their games? or to all games that are for the PS3? if its for all games, then make a freaking Xbox live like service and use the income to make better online support then it is now.
As much as i’m not a big online guy, I would never EVER pay for having access to online play. When I had my X360 for 2 years not once did I sign up for XBL, but as soon as I got the PS3 I was more then happy to play some games online because apart from paying for your own internet connection, the online was free to connect and free to play at no extra charge.
But I understand if that model is probably old fashioned and in favour of the developers, I have absolutely no problem with publishers/companies putting up some sort of subscription model on games like MW2 or online passes for used games… in all fairness the developers have to be payed… BUT ONLY AT THE RIGHT PRICE!
But if your trying to charge for something like PSN basic online play then your not only fucking with the customers… or rather loyal customers, but your also fucking with your own system that bought you success. if you charge for basic online play, it will only end in tears.
My whole philosophy behind used games really has not changed… it is pretty obvious that retailers like GameStop or whatever (GAME or Gamestation in the UK) need to stop overcharging for games so that more money goes into their own pockets. They should realise that the reason they are in business is because of the games industry and the least they can do is treat the publishers and especially the developers with some respect and split costs on the money that is rightfully theirs. And now we are stuck in a deadlock where we, the gamers, are forced to spend even more money because a battle that is going on behind the scenes in no even close to being resolved.
No real surprise here. It’s working for EA so why wouldn’t other developers/publishers adopt the same program. I will however say that when games finally go entirely digital they better drop the price because they will no longer be able to hid behind the used game argument.
vote with you wallets guys, vote with you wallets.
tbh it’s not a problem for personally, tend not to play MP online, nor buy second hand MP games, but i wanna pick up on a point that was already made: if in a couple of years time i wanna pick up MW2 (yeah right) and i can’t find a first hand copy, i’m forced to buy second hand and pay this kinda fee. oh well.
@superfartburger: it’s a relatively new idea and we don’t know how it will evolve and change over time. Maybe it will only be in place for 2 years for example, allowing used copies after that. Quite reasonable considering companies often doesn’t re-release titles. On the other hand I think there is no real problem in getting any of Sony’s big titles from stores even now – they just go platinum with them. Who knows, who knows. Since it’s not even “live” yet, waiting is the only option to see how it goes.
The whole service is not really a major problem to me, considering you can get rather new used title for 50-60% of it’s retail price and Online Pass is at around 15% of it – it’s still a win-win situation for me. It’s not based on GameStop prices or anything, since there are none of that in Poland – we sell used games ourselves.
Yea… now it’s too long to read and there are probably like 10 mistakes in it… Ah… whatever.
