Sony is preparing new handheld products to compete with Apple’s iPhone and upcoming iPad, according to the Wall Street Journal. They are reporting that Sony is prepping a “smart phone capable of downloading and playing videogames,” in addition to “a portable device that shares characteristics of netbooks, electronic-book readers and handheld-game machines.”
No details on whether the smart phone would be a PSP-branded machine, but Big S certainly has an interest in defending its mobile device business. For Sony, as a manufacturer of both phones and portable gaming devices, Apple is becoming an increasingly formidable competitor.

I don’t want an sPhone to be honest. What SONY needs to do is redesign the PSP GO and add a UMD slot. If SONY did that I’m sure the GO would sell like hot cakes.
Cheers axe heads
I would be totally happy with an ebook-reader/mangement app for my psp-3000.

I’m not willing to carry a PSP around but if an sPhone was the size of an iPhone, I would be somewhat interested. A phone with actual serious games instead of the gimicky crap has some potential. It would have to be a full featured phone though, not a PSP with phone functionality.
well it’s gonna have to be pretty freaking good if they wanna sell it.
so long as they’ve said “OK, what’s good about the iPhone?” and included those features, and then said “OK, what’s BAD about the iPhone?” and remedied those features, then great! if not? Fail.
