Super Meat Boy Steals E3?

Super Meat Boy is a game where you play as a boy without any skin who bleeds everywhere he goes and his girlfriend is made of bandages and she has been kidnapped by a fetus in a jar wearing a top-hat and a monocle.”

Soak that in for a minute. Go ahead, re-read if you would like – it’s ok.

I swear to you, that is a direct quote from Tommy Refenes, one of the creators of Team Meat’s upcoming title Super Meat Boy, in his GameTrailers walkthrough of the game. So far, it is unquestionably the best game description of 2010.

I happened upon Super Meat Boy, tucked away on one little console in a bank of 8-10 of them, as I was meandering the Xbox booth at E3. I am not 100% sure what made me stop and play that game over the other games being displayed in that console cluster, but I did. And I couldn’t be happier.

When I first saw Super Meat Boy, I thought the main character was a cube of meat oozing a trail of grease behind it as it slid across various surfaces in the game. I see now that I was mistaken. It’s a skinless boy – of course. That differentiation aside, Super Meat Boy is a 2D platformer being developed for XBLA, WiiWare, Windows, and Mac. But it is much more than that. It is gross, funny, whimsical, challenging, meaty, creepy, juicy, creative, and very entertaining.

I could tell you that there are over 300 levels in the game and that it has some double, triple, and quadruple wall jumping fun a-la ‘Splosion Man, but it wouldn’t do the game justice. You can read all you want about the game, but until you hear the slimy sounds that come from Meat Boy slathering around using his own blood emanating from your own speakers, you can’t appreciate the visceral feeling that comes from controlling this squishy, jiggly, and ultimately awesome leading man.

I am not a fan of 2D platformers in general, but this is one of the very few from that genre that I will undoubtedly be purchasing. The game is targeted for release at the end of the summer and I strongly encourage you to give it a look. At the very least, check out the XBLA demo and see what you think. I am confident you will be glad you did.
