So this weeks column is going to be short and to the point. What I want to know is, do you give a sh#t? Do you care or are you a sick of it as I am? When I heard the boys bring the subject up on this week’s episode of EpicBattleCry I wanted to punch myself in the face. Fortunately for us (and my face), the three amigos are very good at what they do and theirs turned out to be one of the best conversations on the subject I have heard. Nonetheless, I don’t really want to hear about it anymore. It feels overdone, over dramatized, and I am over it! If you don’t already know what I am talking about (which many of you likely do), I am talking about Infinigate!

Shields at the front and spears at the ready, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In this week’s skirmish, we reflect on the PSN ApocolyPS3, check out the Blur mutiplayer beta, mourn the delay of Red Dead Redemption, and ponder the graphic differences between Final Fantasy XIII on the 360 and PS3.

First up in the main course this week, we talk about Steam coming to the Mac and all that means for Apple gamers. We also take a look at the rumors Sony is prepping some sort of mobile device to compete with the iPhone. Next up, we look back over the drama between Activision and Infinity Ward and what the future holds for the Call of Duty franchise.

The Battle Cry of the Week goes to the G.G. Collection, Valve, Mafia II, and The Secret World.

The past twenty four hours may prove to be 2010’s most dramatic day for gaming. It all began Monday evening when G4’s Patrick Klepek began reporting on a “tense” situation at Infinity Ward. Non-uniformed security personal had taken up position outside the developer’s offices. The situation between the Modern Warfare 2 dev and publisher Activision was described as being “tense” as of late. Studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella had met with Activision Monday morning and hadn’t been seen thereafter by anyone at IW.
Several hours later, things started breaking loose. Jason West updated his Facebook status with a message that read “Jason West is drinking. Also, unemployed.” West’s Linkedin profile was also updated, indicating his position as President/Game Director/CCO/CTO at Infinity Ward had ended as of March 2010. It was also discovered in an SEC report filed Monday morning, Activision stated, in part:
“In November 2009, the Company released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a game developed by one of the Company’s wholly-owned studios, Infinity Ward. As noted above, Modern Warfare 2 was the best selling console title in the U.S. and Europe in 2009. Consistent with past practice, the Company intends to release a Call of Duty game in 2010 developed by another wholly-owned studio. The Company is concluding an internal human resources inquiry into breaches of contract and insubordination by two senior employees at Infinity Ward. This matter is expected to involve the departure of key personnel and litigation. At present, the Company does not expect this matter to have a material impact on the Company.”
By Tuesday morning things were beginning to coalesce. Vince Zampella’s Linkedin profile had also been updated to reflect his departure from Infinity Ward. Speculation mounted about tension between the studio and publisher over the Call of Duty franchise.  Infinity Ward had reportedly not been pleased with the idea of any other developer working on a Call of Duty title. When the studio renewed its contract with Activision in 2009, one clause affirmed that only IW be allowed to make CoD games in a contemporary setting. With Infinity Ward on a game-every-two-years production cycle and Activision wanting a new CoD title annually, its not difficult to see where the friction over outside devs working on Call of Duty would have entered the fray. As it turns out, when they finally showed their hand, Activision’s plans went far beyond a third party developer and new Call of Duty title during Infinity Ward’s off year.
In a press release on Tuesday, March 2nd Activision “announced new strategic plans for the Call of Duty® franchise” that included the formation of a CoD business unit, a new entry in the franchise from Treyarch in fall 2010, a new game expected in 2011, and that the publisher was in “discussions with a select number of partners to bring the franchise to Asia, one of the fastest growing regions for online multiplayer games in the world.”
We also learned that wholly-owned subsidiary Sledgehammer Games (helmed by Dead Space alumns Glen A. Schofield and Michael Condrey) is working on a new title that will expand the Call of Duty franchise into the action-adventure genre. The press release confirmed that while Jason West and Vince Zampella are no longer with the studio, Infinity Ward would still deliver the first two DLC map packs for Modern Warfare 2 sometime this year. Activision hasn’t elaborated any further on the charges of “insubordination” or the legal proceedings alluded to in the SEC filing.
So that’s it gang. In the last twenty-four hours the two men most directly responsible for one of the biggest franchises in gaming history were handed their hats and shown the door. The apparent reason is that Activision wanted to expand the Call of Duty franchise into a immense, multi-tiered brand while West and Zampella didn’t.
So what do you think? Did Activision screw themselves or cut dead weight that was holding them back? Did the former heads of IW get the sharp end of the stick or were they just too narrow minded to grasp the big picture? Will this negatively impact the Call of Duty series or turn it into the first mega-franchise of the modern console era? Cry havoc and let us know what you think about this remarkable series of events.

PRESS RELEASE
GOG_Activision
In a landmark deal for the DRM-free digital distribution movement, Activision Publishing Inc. is bringing a wide range of classic games to GOG.com. With a wealth of PC-gaming gems tucked away in the Activision vaults, the deal gives all types of gamer – from the long-time devotee to the laptop-carrying “newbie” – an unforgettable glimpse into the rich history of the PC gaming.

The games on offer will be unveiled gradually in the coming weeks so as to encourage maximum enjoyment of the classic gameplay. The first two titles should be instantly recognizable to any fan of games in the adventure and role-playing genres.

Available now for $5.99, Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magic Obscura (Role-Playing Game, 2001) is the masterpiece from too-quickly-shuttered Troika Games. Heralded by The Electric Playground as “the most diverse and open-ended RPG to date,” Arcanum was conceived by many of the same minds responsible for the Fallout series and places players in a refreshingly unique setting, as ogres and other fantastical creatures come to grips with life in the midst of an industrial revolution.

The second title now available for $5.99, Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (Point-and-Click Adventure, 1993), envisioned by legendary game designer, Jane Jensen, stands as a shining example of adventure gaming at its best. As writer and bookstore owner, Gabriel Knight, players set off to investigate a series of murders, in hopes of using the research to write a new novel. Sins of the Fathers is the first part of Gabriel’s adventures, considered by many as the best Sierra adventure-game series.

“Signing the agreement with Activision is the biggest thing that’s happened at GOG.com since the actual announcement of the service. This is a huge step forward for our site and for digital distribution as a whole, as Activision is one of the biggest publishers in the world with a long history in the games industry,” said Adam Oldakowski, Managing Director at GOG.com. “We’re even happier to bring Activision games back to gamers, as GOG.com is the only place right now, where you can grab the announced titles. We’ve also managed to work on those titles to provide full compatibility with modern operating systems.”

DJHero_Screen
For everyone who thought DJ Hero’s less than stellar sales numbers would stop Activision’s yearly sequel trend, you can pretty much “scratch” that idea…

In an interview with Game Informer, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick confirmed what many speculated by stating there will indeed be a sequel to their newest turntable, disc scratching IP.

“If you’re going to make a commitment to doing something original, the odds are that you’re not going to get it right on the first chance,” said Kotick in the interview.  He cited such examples as Infinity Ward and Treyarch, who did not create their best products the first out.

“I think DJ Hero is a really innovative product. I can’t wait for you to see next year’s. That’s the thing; we’re sticking with it. We’ll stick with it and get it right. But it’s going to be less games, better games. That’s our strategy.”

As one of the few who owns the game I’m excited that they’re going forward with the franchise.  Apart from being happy my $120 turntable won’t go to waste, I believe DJ Hero is only a couple game modes and better multiplayer away from being up there with Guitar Hero and Rock Band in terms of commercial success. Agree?  Disagree? Discuss!

CallOfDuty_TextLogo
It may come as no surprise that according to a “senior UK trade source” the next Call of Duty title will be released this November. Considering the prior release schedule for the franchise and outstanding success of Modern Warfare 2, I don’t think anyone will be shocked.

“It’s going to be November again – just as with World At War and Modern Warfare 2,” the source told CVG. “Activision believes that it can own Christmas 2010, just as it has in the last two years. Development is on course – and Treyarch have been told the game must be ready to hit shelves before the gifting season.”

According to the same source, the game, which has been rumored to take place in Vietnam, is heavily influenced by cinema classics Platoon and Apocalypse Now.

Of course, until Activision makes it official it will have to remain a rumor, but you can stay tuned to the ‘Axe for more details as they come our way. Excited? Not excited? Discuss.

Forget Roger Rabbit, back off Beatles, take a seat Titanic…you all have been PWND! That’s right, There’s a heaping helping of congratulatory cake over at Infinity Ward and Activision this morning and the blood-colored icing reads “Congrats on the Biggest Launch in Entertainment History”. While the numbers are fluctuating slightly, it appears that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has SOLD (as opposed to just SHIPPED) approximately 4.7 million copies of the controversial airport carnage simulator across the 360, PS3, and PC within the first 24 hours of availability throughout North America and the United Kingdom alone. Like math? Well, so does Activision, and at the risk of breaking Bobby Kotick’s personal calculator, the publisher determined that the number of game sales translates to about $310 million bones.

Dude….That’s a lotta coin for one 24-hour period and we can only imagine how much the game will accumulate in sales once it is released everywhere and has a few months in the holiday spotlight. I’m calling yet another sequel right now! Oh wait…

cod2010
It’s not much of a surprise, but just a few days before the highly-anticipated launch of Modern Warfare 2, Activision has confirmed that yet another Call of Duty title will be headed our way in 2010. Speaking to analysts via conference call, Activision Publishing president Mike Griffith stated that, “In [calendar year] 2010, Activision Publishing is expected to release strong, innovative new titles,” and that “The diversified lineup will include titles based on the best selling franchises including Call of Duty, Guitar Hero, Shrek, [and] Spider-Man.”

Again, not really a surprise that Activision is answering the call when it comes to milking key franchises, but the exact setting and details on the next Call of Duty are still up in the air despite some online rumors suggesting that the Cold War would serve as the backdrop for the next installment. Honestly though, it could be a freakin’ MMO for all we know…

Of course, we’ll keep you posted as more details emerge.

‘Lo Axe Heads and welcome back for an all new EBC On Tap! In this past week’s episode of EpicBattleCry, we talked about the cloud forming over the release of Modern Warfare 2 due to the slimming of the game’s feature set and upwardly mobile pricing philosophy.

Although we didn’t have time there to talk about it then, we decided to sit down for a few minutes today and discuss the other major controversy surrounding MW2: the leaked video footage of the now infamous Airport mission. Violence in gaming, censorship, and moral atrocities are all under the Axe in this week’s On Tap.

Modern Warfare 2 is going to be huge, no doubt about it. A game of the year contender even before anyone had seen it; it’d be just about impossible to screw up the release of such a highly anticipated game. And yet, Infinity Ward found a way.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think there’s anything that can threaten its sales. But the release has been tainted by a string of calamitous decisions leaving some gamers wondering if Infinity Ward wants them reaching for their wallets or their ankles on Nov 10th.
