Greetings Axeheads! We come, once again, to the end of a week full of insightful discussion and superb punditry. We’re going to close out the conversation on game delays with a Battle Cry that puts some pragmatic perspective on the high-profile delays of 2009. Were the rash of delays from late last year a good thing? Could we have afforded all those games anyway? Is the game industry harming themselves irrevocably by leaning on the delay crutch too often, rather than simply being smarter with their scheduling? AxedWheelie makes the case…

Tonight’s GameTrailers TV will be ahead of the curve* as it busts* down the door to reveal the next big-time* title from Bayonetta developer Platinum Games. Will it be a sequel? Will it have a scantly-clad female protagonist? Will it contain overly sexualized characters embarking on dastardly feats or heroic adventures complete with comical dialogue and the occasional bare ass? Hmmm…guess you’re gonna have to watch to find out.

I posted about it on my blog over on GameTrailers.com if you wanna know what else is on the show and see a teaser trailer to boot. So, any bets on the game from Platinum?

*All references to the buxom Bayonetta in some manner…

Yeah, sure, we know a lot of folks like to dress up like Bayonettasome better than others, but when it comes to gamers actually filling her action-packed shoes the way developer Platinum Games intended, you’ll have to pick up the sticks to try the near perfect game (according to some) for yourself. Luckily, you won’t have to wait too long to give it a whirl. Looks like SEGA will be releasing a demo of the game via XBL and PSN in both North America and Europe come December 3! Nice!

Of course, the game goes on sale in the U.S. on January 5th and across Europe on January 8th 2010, giving just over a month to enjoy the tiny morsel of sexified ass kicking as much as humanly possible until the real thing comes out…and we see just how perfect the game really is.

Bayonetta is perfect, we all know that, so finding a woman to fill the shoes of the game’s heroine is no small task. Fortunately, Maxim’s award-winning journalism and keen eye for click-worthy chicks has resulted in the crowning of Andrea Bonaccorso who, despite winning a look alike contest, looks very little like Bayonetta herself IMO. For her efforts (which mainly involved sending in a photo), she will receive an 360, 50 inch Panasonic TC-P50X1 HDTV and a copy of the game…Well, at least she’s a gamer!

“When I was 9 years old I begged my mom for a SEGA Genesis for Christmas. When I opened it, I screamed for about 20 minutes.” said the buxom beauty Bonaccorso. “For about 5 years after that, I was obsessed with all the Sonic The Hedgehog games, Toe Jam & Earl, and Rolo To The Rescue (a baby elephant in search of his mother). I didn’t return to my game playing days until about 2 years ago, and now, I’m STILL obsessed with those old games. When I was little I would stay up way past my bedtime and if I died (in the game), I would be crushed. I’d be so mad that I’d beg to stay up and try again. And of course, I’d get my way and continue playing until my eyeballs were burning from not blinking. Yay Sega! Thanks for contributing to my lack of doing homework!! I recently was searching for a Maxim contest, and when I saw what this contest was for, I thought I’d be perfect for it. Had the glasses, the ‘goth’ costume, and the sexy look! haha!”

lol…I love how they had to clarify the “in the game” part when she talked about dying…She sounds old school, so she probably will have difficulty playing the game she now infamously represents, but then again, I probably will too…

Bayonetta comes out January 5 for the 360 and PS3. Autographed photos of Bonacorso not included.

In last week’s column I discussed the incredible amount of high quality games that have been released in the last twelve months. There have been a lot. It seems like more high quality games are being released every year and I, for one, am grateful. But how “high quality” are the games? There was an interesting question brought up on this week’s episode of EpicBattleCry regarding the recent review given by the Japanese video games magazine Famitsu to the upcoming game Bayonetta. Famitsu did something that they have only done a handful of times since their first issue in June of 1986. They gave the game a perfect score. Now the question at hand today is not whether or not Bayonetta deserves a perfect score, but rather, does any game? Is any game truly worthy of a perfect score? I am very curious to hear your thoughts on this subject. What do you think? Should perfect review scores be given out to only a select few games? Should they be given out at all? Or for that matter, what does a perfect score represent? Let’s discuss.

Scale the wall and breech their defenses, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In this week’s skirmish, we open pandora’s box with the new God of War III Ultimate Edition, run down down the details of Netflix on the PS3, check out the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition, and ponder the newly announced Nintendo DSi LL.

With Modern Warfare 2 just around the corner, we examine some of the recent news that has cast a shadow over the release of this title; is Infinity Ward ruining their rep with players by charging more for less features with MW2 on PC? Long-running Japanese game mag Famitsu has given Bayonetta a perfect score? Is the game really that good and is there such a thing as a perfect game?

The Battle Cry of the week goes to the DSi LL for boldly establishing the new less-portable trend, Left 4 Dead 2’s avatar awards, the possibility of Goldeneye finally making an appearance on the Wii Virtual Console next year, and all those PC gamers who have vowed not to purchase MW2; are they planning to get some other way?

SEGA has announced that Bayonetta, its upcoming action-packed PS3 and Xbox 360 title, will release in North America on January 5, 2010 and in Europe on January 8. The game, which launches in Japan today, received a perfect score of 40/40 on the Xbox 360 and 38/40 on the PlayStation 3 from highly regarded Japanese gaming mag Famitsu and became only the 12th game ever to achieve a perfect score in the publication’s 20+ years of existence.

“Traditionally high scoring games in Famitsu go on to perform very well at retail in both Japan and the rest of the world. PlatinumGames set out to deliver a game that redefines the 3D action genre, and we feel that they have set a benchmark for future games in the genre to aspire to,” said Mike Hayes, CEO of SEGA America & SEGA Europe. “We chose a January ship date for Bayonetta as we firmly believe that it is the best time for SEGA and our retail partners to launch this exciting new IP in the West, and push for a number #1 retail slot. Bayonetta is a huge title for us and the perfect start for the New Year, both for SEGA and gamers across the West.”

Interested in checking out more on the game? This recently released featurette about the game’s story, characters, and weapons should do the trick.

SEGA’s upcoming action title Bayonetta is getting rave reviews over in Japan and with the game launching state side in early January, it’s about time for folks over here to decide if the title is of the “must have” variety. To help you with your decision, SEGA has provided a newly released featurette that dives into the details of the game’s story, characters, and weapons while looking completely bad-ass in the process. I for one have been impressed with the title thus far and am looking forward to the action-packed experience early next year. You can check out the vid after the jump to help formulate your own opinion.
