Greetings Axeheads! We come, once again, to the end of a week full of insightful discussion and superb punditry. We’re going to close out the conversation on game delays with a Battle Cry that puts some pragmatic perspective on the high-profile delays of 2009. Were the rash of delays from late last year a good thing? Could we have afforded all those games anyway? Is the game industry harming themselves irrevocably by leaning on the delay crutch too often, rather than simply being smarter with their scheduling? AxedWheelie makes the case…

AxedWheelie Says:

My Battlecry goes to the EPIC Holiday Game Delays of 2009, While all those highly anticipated titles like Bioshock 2, and Starcraft 2, Bayonetta, etc were delayed it is my opinion that these delays were good for these games. Thou it irked the gaming community greatly.

The delays have ensured that 2010 we gamers wouldn’t have a dry Q1, and Q2 like the game drought of 09. As for how it will affect the game sales, It is my belief that it wouldn’t affect the over all sales from fans of the series, where the sales will be lacking is grabbing those who are still on the fence.

New I.p’s like Beyonetta would suffer sales also, but I think that is because of it’s over hyped sexually driven ads and not from the delay of it’s shipment date.

Delays in the game industry are a double edge sword it helps but at the same time it hurts us all. we all know the pro’s and con’s of this terrible game.

Pro’s:
It gives the gaming community time to save up enough money to buy all the games that they want to play.

Gives the developers breathing space between releases.

Con’s:
Lost of sales, initial interest, lost of spontaneous sales “due to media hype”

TOO DAMN MANY! Dev’s and Publishers are delaying their games. (I can forgive a few delays through out the year because it happens and there’s nothing you can do in certain cases, but when everyone is doing it like it’s the latest hollywood trend, then it hurts our community over all.)

Well that’s my rant on todays delay.

End

Though its an unintended consequence of the many games that were delayed from Q4 2009 to Q1 2010, I think AxedWheelie‘s point is not less profound. If all those games had come out when originally slated we’d be in the middle of the biggest dry spell in a decade. Certainly, last year we were all very aware of the slump in releases leading up to the ‘Rocktober’ blitzkrieg. The delays, while they weren’t necessarily intended to, helped prevent a similar situation from occurring again this year. And certainly the titles that are coming out now have benefited from some extra polishing time.

Sometimes its important to keep things in perspective and today’s Member BattleCry made some great points to that end. Thanks for sharing your thoughts AxedWheelie! And let us know your thoughts in the comments section below and if you have something else entirely that you’d like to sound off on, then feel free to do that over on this week’s topics starter post where you can SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

Alright everyone, that’s gonna do it for now, but we hope you have an awesome weekend and keep your rants, raves, and recommendations coming here on EpicBattleAxe.com!

Yeah, sure, we know a lot of folks like to dress up like Bayonetta…some better than others, but when it comes to gamers actually filling her action-packed shoes the way developer Platinum Games intended, you’ll have to pick up the sticks to try the near perfect game (according to some) for yourself. Luckily, you won’t have to wait too long to give it a whirl. Looks like SEGA will be releasing a demo of the game via XBL and PSN in both North America and Europe come December 3! Nice!

Of course, the game goes on sale in the U.S. on January 5th and across Europe on January 8th 2010, giving just over a month to enjoy the tiny morsel of sexified ass kicking as much as humanly possible until the real thing comes out…and we see just how perfect the game really is.

Bayonetta is perfect, we all know that, so finding a woman to fill the shoes of the game’s heroine is no small task. Fortunately, Maxim’s award-winning journalism and keen eye for click-worthy chicks has resulted in the crowning of Andrea Bonaccorso who, despite winning a look alike contest, looks very little like Bayonetta herself IMO. For her efforts (which mainly involved sending in a photo), she will receive an 360, 50 inch Panasonic TC-P50X1 HDTV and a copy of the game…Well, at least she’s a gamer!

“When I was 9 years old I begged my mom for a SEGA Genesis for Christmas. When I opened it, I screamed for about 20 minutes.” said the buxom beauty Bonaccorso. “For about 5 years after that, I was obsessed with all the Sonic The Hedgehog games, Toe Jam & Earl, and Rolo To The Rescue (a baby elephant in search of his mother). I didn’t return to my game playing days until about 2 years ago, and now, I’m STILL obsessed with those old games. When I was little I would stay up way past my bedtime and if I died (in the game), I would be crushed. I’d be so mad that I’d beg to stay up and try again. And of course, I’d get my way and continue playing until my eyeballs were burning from not blinking. Yay Sega! Thanks for contributing to my lack of doing homework!! I recently was searching for a Maxim contest, and when I saw what this contest was for, I thought I’d be perfect for it. Had the glasses, the ‘goth’ costume, and the sexy look! haha!”

lol…I love how they had to clarify the “in the game” part when she talked about dying…She sounds old school, so she probably will have difficulty playing the game she now infamously represents, but then again, I probably will too…

Bayonetta comes out January 5 for the 360 and PS3. Autographed photos of Bonacorso not included.

By Lorin Baumgarten
In last week’s column I discussed the incredible amount of high quality games that have been released in the last twelve months. There have been a lot. It seems like more high quality games are being released every year and I, for one, am grateful. But how “high quality” are the games? There was an interesting question brought up on this week’s episode of EpicBattleCry regarding the recent review given by the Japanese video games magazine Famitsu to the upcoming game Bayonetta. Famitsu did something that they have only done a handful of times since their first issue in June of 1986. They gave the game a perfect score. Now the question at hand today is not whether or not Bayonetta deserves a perfect score, but rather, does any game? Is any game truly worthy of a perfect score? I am very curious to hear your thoughts on this subject. What do you think? Should perfect review scores be given out to only a select few games? Should they be given out at all? Or for that matter, what does a perfect score represent? Let’s discuss.

The first thing that must be established in order to begin this discussion is, ‘What is a perfect score?’. Most obvious is that, to give a few examples, a perfect score would be a 10 out of 10, 5 stars out of 5 or, in Famitsu’s case, 40 out of 40. The reason Famitsu has a scale of 40 is because they have four different reviewers that each give the game a score between 1 and 10, a fact which makes their perfect score even more impressive. Getting the same score out of four different people is an uncommon occurrence, I am sure. This might explain what it has only happened a few time in Famitsu’s twenty three year history. Perhaps if every outlet required more than one opinion we would have far less perfect scores.

But back to the topic at hand, ‘What is a perfect score?’. What does a perfect score actually represent when the reviewer doles it out? Does it simply mean that the overall experience of the game was a phenomenal one? Does it mean that it is the best game the reviewer has ever played? Does it mean the reviewer wants their score on the box? It might mean all of those things or none of them to any given reviewer. Likewise, the multitude of differing opinions that reviewers have about what a perfect score represents is also reflected in their readers. Gamers, at large, have a wide view of what a perfect score implies. There is really no consistency. So what do you think a perfect score means? Is it something different than what I mentioned above? Establishing what a perfect score means, or perhaps should mean, is at the heart of this discussion. Creating an industry standard benchmark for what a perfect score represents would go a long way towards answering the question of whether or not a specific game deserves a perfect score.

So let’s do it. Let’s define what a perfect score should be. My definition of a game that is deserving of a perfect score is quite simple. A perfect score should be reserved for a game that is – well – perfect. That is to say, a perfect score should be reserved for a game that cannot be improved upon. To me, that is the definition of perfect. As a matter of fact, Merriam-Webster’s Online Dictionary gives their first definition of the word ‘perfect’ as “1 a : being entirely without fault or defect : flawless.” What a perfect definition – without fault or defect: flawless. I don’t know about you, but I have yet to encounter a game that is without fault or defect or that is flawless.

Now please don’t misinterpret what I am saying, I have played some truly incredible games. Games that have made me laugh, games that have made me sad, and games that have scared me far worse than any movie ever has. I have seen artwork in games that has blown my mind and creativity that is worthy of celebration. I have been moved by incredibly ornate vistas and floored with laughter from a brilliantly designed dancing stick figure. Best of all is that games are just getting better, and more creative, and more beautiful, and more engaging. But for all of the exquisite work I have seen in the gaming industry, I have never – ever – seen a game that is flawless. Have you?

Some of you might think I am being nit-picky or too literal. But let us be clear, this is the definition of the word ‘perfect’ and reviewers are word-smiths (or fancy themselves as such). Thus, they should choose thoughtfully how they frame their coverage. I would put forth that if we were going to start a discussion about standardizing the meaning of a “perfect score”, then the dictionary definition of the word ‘perfect’ might be a good place to start. Just a thought.

If we accept the definition of a perfect score to be that of a game which is without flaw, than the question of which games deserve perfect scores and how often they should be given out kind of answers itself, don you think? If we were to standardize the meaning of a ’10′ based on the dictionary (crazy thought, I know) then a score of ’10′ would actually carry the weight it deserves.
Without that standardization, what happens when a truly perfect game is released? When the game is finally released that cannot be improved upon; that is free from fault or defect and is actually flawless – how will we know? There are plenty of games that have received perfect scores from various sources and, honestly, I don’t think anyone of those sources would tell you that any one of those games was without defect. So how will we know when there is such a game? Won’t it have the same score as all the rest?

Some of you may argue that if we use the definition proposed above, we would never see a perfect score again. To you I ask this question – Does it bother you that we never see a score of ’1′? Think about it. We don’t ever see scores of zero or one for a game, yet this bothers no one. But mention that you might never see a ’10′ again and suddenly the screaming masses stomp their feet and proclaim that a scoring scale is useless and loses all meaning if you can’t ever give out a perfect score out. In fact, just the opposite is true. The scale gains meaning when you are not handing out a perfect score five times a year.

There are great games out there and they are just getting better. Every year games get better looking, more involved, and more intelligent. Many of these games are worthy of high praise, to be sure. But, as of the writing of this column, there has been no game that is free from fault or flawless. So I will hold on to that coveted 10 out of 10 until that day comes. Will you?

Scale the wall and breech their defenses, its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! In this week’s skirmish, we open pandora’s box with the new God of War III Ultimate Edition, run down down the details of Netflix on the PS3, check out the Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Limited Edition, and ponder the newly announced Nintendo DSi LL.

With Modern Warfare 2 just around the corner, we examine some of the recent news that has cast a shadow over the release of this title; is Infinity Ward ruining their rep with players by charging more for less features with MW2 on PC? Long-running Japanese game mag Famitsu has given Bayonetta a perfect score? Is the game really that good and is there such a thing as a perfect game?

The Battle Cry of the week goes to the DSi LL for boldly establishing the new less-portable trend, Left 4 Dead 2‘s avatar awards, the possibility of Goldeneye finally making an appearance on the Wii Virtual Console next year, and all those PC gamers who have vowed not to purchase MW2; are they planning to get some other way?

SEGA has announced that Bayonetta, its upcoming action-packed PS3 and Xbox 360 title, will release in North America on January 5, 2010 and in Europe on January 8. The game, which launches in Japan today, received a perfect score of 40/40 on the Xbox 360 and 38/40 on the PlayStation 3 from highly regarded Japanese gaming mag Famitsu and became only the 12th game ever to achieve a perfect score in the publication’s 20+ years of existence.

“Traditionally high scoring games in Famitsu go on to perform very well at retail in both Japan and the rest of the world. PlatinumGames set out to deliver a game that redefines the 3D action genre, and we feel that they have set a benchmark for future games in the genre to aspire to,” said Mike Hayes, CEO of SEGA America & SEGA Europe. “We chose a January ship date for Bayonetta as we firmly believe that it is the best time for SEGA and our retail partners to launch this exciting new IP in the West, and push for a number #1 retail slot. Bayonetta is a huge title for us and the perfect start for the New Year, both for SEGA and gamers across the West.”

Interested in checking out more on the game? This recently released featurette about the game’s story, characters, and weapons should do the trick.

SEGA’s upcoming action title Bayonetta is getting rave reviews over in Japan and with the game launching state side in early January, it’s about time for folks over here to decide if the title is of the “must have” variety. To help you with your decision, SEGA has provided a newly released featurette that dives into the details of the game’s story, characters, and weapons while looking completely bad-ass in the process. I for one have been impressed with the title thus far and am looking forward to the action-packed experience early next year.
