Sup everyone, hope you’re enjoying your week thus far and chiming in with your thoughts on this week’s Member BattleCry topic: The Most Disappointing Games of All-Time. Now, as you may have heard me say on previous editions of our EpicBattleCry video podcast, I’ve come to develop a love/hate relationship with the Fable series…Peter Molyneux does an AWESOME job of making the game SOUND great, but once I’ve picked up the sticks, it’s felt like just a little something was missing. Well, EBA Axe Head fatninja expresses his own disappointment with this rather popular franchise in today’s Member BattleCry, so hit the jump to find out why the Fable series is considered by some to be more of a myth than a legend.

fatninja says:

I know this was touched on before, but my Battlecry goes to the Fable series as a whole.

The first one, I believe I was told would revolutionize RPGs and there were there hard life decisions that would affect my world and appearance. True, Fable delivered some of what it advertised, but it’s still just some. Customizing your character just felt really limited. Not enough armor choices. You could have a wife but no kids. If you were good, you got a sissy halo and butterflies. The world was limited to small sections that had load screens. It felt shallow.

The next one, I thought they were going to fix everything. It looked better. Had a better story. The economy system was interesting. But there were no good legendary weapons. You could buy better stuff. You could have kids now but they never age and all you can do is lead them around and give them gifts. The dog was supposed to be this empathetic, intelligent creature. I lost him like three times. He got stuck somewhere, and the only real reason I liked him was he found treasure. The closet got bigger, but not enough for totally eliminating armor. There were less tattoos. It was buggy. The DLC was a joke. The list goes on.

The series always promises and delivers less than half of what they say. It always leave me with a bittersweet taste in my mouth. For games that base themselves on consequence and choices, I never feel that attached or like I’m making any kind of difference. They’re not terrible, but they always feel like they’re missing something. But like an abusive relationship, I’m comin’ back for Fable III. Hopefully this iteration lives up to the promise of the first.

END

So…there ya go…I’d like to quickly clarify my intro by stating that I truly did enjoy the first Fable and felt rather disappointed by the second for the reasons fatninja listed above. I too will hold out hope for Fable III, but I get the feeling that folks like me and fatninja are ready to give up if the game doesn’t do the concept of the franchise justice. So, what do YOU think? Any Fable fans in the house that feel the complete opposite? How many of you loved BOTH games? Let us know your thoughts on Lionhead’s Fable in the comments section below and as always, you can also bring up ANYTHING you’d like from the world of gaming over on this week’s topics starter post where you can SUBMIT A NEW TOPIC:

By Lorin Baumgarten

Welcome back to my weekly musing on subjects great and small related to gaming. This week I am, once again, soliciting your thoughts on a topic that we haven’t heard much about in the gaming press, but one that is, at the very least, intriguing. The tried and true trio of talk show hosts brought it up on this week’s episode of EBC during a conversation relating to the state of digital distribution. It was offered up for discussion in the context of Fable II and the forthcoming digital release of that game. To be honest, I hadn’t heard about this plan, devised by Microsoft and Lionhead, until hearing about it on EpicBattleCry. None-the-less, it is a fascinating concept that deserves some scrutiny and discussion. It is the distribution of game content as episodes.

For those of you that don’t know, Microsoft and Lionhead Studios have decided to release the entire game of Fable II as episodic content. They are offering the first episode for free (currently available) and will be selling subsequent episodes as downloadable content in the near future. Oddly, they have not yet announced the price for the episodes that are to follow. However, that is neither here, nor there. What is interesting is that they are offering an entire game, and a good one at that, as separate, downloadable episodes. How does that make you feel? No really – listen to yourself. How does it make you feel? What is your gut reaction? Mine was one of excitement! I can’t put my finger on why, exactly, but it was. The prospect seems full of potential and it seems as though it might have some merit for both developers and gamers alike. But perhaps we should delve in a bit further.

So let’s look at some of the pros and cons associated with this idea:

Pro: You aren’t paying full price for a game you don’t like or don’t finish.

This is kind of cool. You are really only paying for what you play. If you get bored halfway through a game you can simply stop playing, and therefore paying for, the game. That certainly can’t be said of a game right now. Right now you buy a game and you pay the same price whether you play for one hour or for forty.

Con: No resale value.

This is true. However, I find this argument to be a bit naïve, and frankly, it is growing a bit tiresome. Eventually games will go to all digital distribution. Someday, in the not to distant future, this resale question won’t be a question at all. So the real question is; how do we want our digital games delivered? Could episodic content potentially give us a little more control over digitally distributed games? It just might.

Pro: A new gaming format.

This is perhaps the most interesting part to me. What if games began to be delivered on a weekly basis, 1-2 hours at a time? Not all games would be able to do this, mind you. Nor would I want them to. But think about it. A game like Uncharted 2 or Heavy Rain or Alan Wake or even Modern Warfare 2 could be spread out over ten or twelve or even twenty weeks (with multiplayer to tide you over, depending on the game). It would be like getting a sweet new game every week! I don’t know about you, but that sounds intriguing to me. As I said, I wouldn’t want all games to be like that, but it might be an interesting format to play with for some games.

Con: Being taken advantage of.

As of late we have seen game makers trying to feel out what the market will bear when it comes to monetizing DLC. What this results in is the situation we now have where we are being nickeled and dimed to death as the publishers try to see how much they can squeeze out of us and for what. With that mindset in mind, there is serious potential to get nickled and dimed with episodic distribution too. Hopefully, however, with game makers eliminating the used game market by using digital distribution, they wouldn’t screw us with episodic distribution.

Pro: Episodic delivery would allow for ongoing development and real time story/technical adjustments.

If the episodes were released over time, versus all at once, it might allow the developers to tweak storylines, gameplay, or technical issues based on player feedback (something we all know the gaming community is willing to give). Just like a TV show over the course of a season, an episodic game could potentially be a bit more fluid with regard to its response to fan reaction. This would change the current model of “here, have the giant finished product and we will take your feedback for the next game in two or three years” to “hey, cool – that’s a great idea. I bet we can work it in during the next few episodes”. Again, this could be a double edged sword and I wouldn’t want every game to be like this, but it is an interesting prospect to consider.

Con: Creating additional content just for the sake of charging for another episode.

I can foresee an issue here where game makers see a direct link between the earning potential of a game and its overall length. I fear this could lead to creation of additional content just for the sake of dragging out a story in order to make more episodes. Essentially it would be quantity over quality. However, I suppose this situation would theoretically right itself in that if the episodes became lackluster, we would simply stop purchasing them.

These are all interesting things to consider and make a good starting point for a conversation about episodic content, but it is just a starting point. It is curious to look back and notice that all of the Cons that are listed above are related to money (and to be fair, so is one Pro). It seems as though the real concern would be how episodic content would be priced and released. Conversely, the Pros detailed above seem to indicate that this model would allow for a new outlet for creative and technical expression as well as potentially more control over digitally distributed games, but at what cost?

So what do you think would be fair and how should it look to you? Five dollars for one to two hours of content delivered once a week? What about ten dollars for three to four hours of gameplay delivered every two to three weeks? Or how about you take a complete game, divide it into five segments and make all of the content available at the same time for twelve dollars per episode? Or maybe all three ideas would work, but for different games.

Just as a frame of reference, five dollars for one to two hours of content would make a 6 hour single player game (COD 4) $15-30. Not bad, right? But it would also make a thirty to forty hour game (Fallout 3 – not including DLC) $75-150. How do you feel about that? What if they offered a season pass? Or maybe 3-episode packs? What about if a game season is already over, could you buy them all for cheaper?

It is easy to see that there are a myriad of possibilities as to how this could manifest. It is obvious that many details would need to be ironed out before one could come up with a viable episodic model. And while I am not sure if I am entirely for this idea, it is undoubtedly an intriguing one, and one which will likely be getting more attention as we march even further into the age of digital distribution. It does have the potential to benefit the gamer with more control over the impending specter that is digital distribution. It could also open up possibilities related to a new game design model, a model which the brilliantly creative people in the gaming industry could really sink their teeth into. But the question is – what will it cost us?

Any thoughts?

Spears to the front and march! Its time for another edition of EpicBattleCry! This week, we check on the new Resident Evil 5: Alternative Edition, run down details on the new Matt Hazard title, sneak deets of Modern Warfare 2‘s first map pack and lack of a pre-release demo, and ponder the new Xbox 360 holiday bundles headed our way.

With Super Street Fighter IV announced, and Fable II now available as piecemeal downloads, we take a look at the reality of digital distribution and work over the pros and cons of this emerging business model. So the long-promised ‘Rocktober’ is here and its time to start figuring out what we’re gonna score this month and what we’re gonna pass. With titles like Demon’s Souls, Tekken 6, DJ Hero, Forza 3, Borderlands, Brutal Legend and Uncharted 2 headed our way, its going to be an expensive four weeks.

The Battle Cry of the Week goes to all the righteous souls who didn’t buy a PSPgo, the Brutal Legend demo going public, Alpha Protocol (now being delayed to 2010) in the hopes the extra time will make the game extra awesome, and seeing more developer tools and custom mods making their way to consoles.

Remember back during GC when Fable III was announced along with Fable II Episodes, the “try before you buy” version of the popular 2008 title that allows gamers to experience the mind of Molyneux one pre-paid chapter at a time (with the opening chapter being free to ALL XBL members). Well, the Fable II Episodes have today launched via XBL and those of you who haven’t yet experienced the game can now test drive your way through Albion to see if its your bag. Pretty cool concept if you ask us (well…me anyway), although the actual pricing of the individual chapters is curiously missing from the official press release. We’ve got an official description of the content for ya after the jump if you’re interested.

Fable II: Game Episodes delivers the entire Fable II experience in five consecutive installments, with all the Achievements, challenges, and excitement of the disk-based game. In the first episode, which is completely free, you will experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult in the world of Albion. After completing the chapter, you have the choice to then purchase the next installment and continue your adventure. Fable II: Game Episodes fully compatible with the disk-based, retail version of Fable II, allowing players to enter Albion and continue their story should they purchase Fable II at retail. The episodes also deliver full compatibility with the previously released Game Add-ons, Knothole Island and See the Future.

Lionhead’s Peter Molyneux has announced Fable III, exclusively for the Xbox 360, which will be coming our way during the 2010 holiday season. The game will ” explore the journey to rule, with you in pursuit of a kingdom” while offering up the ability to play as your child hero from Fable II. Of course, it wouldn’t be a Molyneux project if there weren’t some lofty (and wordy) expectations placed out of the gate, and Fable III doesn’t disappoint as it promises that “themes of heroism, leadership and consequence are taken to a grand scale as you fight to unite a divided people.”

Additionally, Moleyneux announced the launch of Fable II: Game Episodes, the digitally distributed, episodic installment of Fable II, which will debut Sept. 29 with the release of the first episode for free download exclusively on Xbox LIVE. In the first episode, players will experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult in the world of Albion. After completing the chapter, players have the choice to then purchase the next installment or the entire game (in select regions). Fable II: Game Episodes delivers the entire Fable II experience in five consecutive instalments, with all the Achievements, challenges and excitement of the disk-based game, as well as full compatibility with the previously released Game Add-ons, Knothole Island and See the Future.

Interesting.

You can see the debut trailer for Fable III after the jump along with a rather detailed description of both newly announced projects. Enjoy!

PRESSS RELEASE – Fable III and Fable II: Game Episodes

Alexander the Great. Genghis Khan. Queen Elizabeth I. Che Guevara. Throughout history, revolutionary leaders have taken very different paths to power, bringing about prosperity and poverty, peace and sometimes anarchy to their people. Now Microsoft Corp. and Lionhead Studios will explore the journey to rule, with you in pursuit of a kingdom, in “Fable III,” the exciting new game in the critically acclaimed “Fable” franchise. The title’s debut was confirmed today at gamescom in Germany by Peter Molyneux, Lionhead’s creative director, and will be available exclusively on Xbox 360 in the 2010 holiday season.

“Be not deceived. Revolutions do not go backward.” — Abraham Lincoln

Since its inception, the blockbuster “Fable” franchise has offered players the opportunity to choose their own destinies as a hero, villain or someone between, where the possibilities are limitless and the consequences can weigh heavily on the path to greatness. In this new adventure, players will witness tyranny, poverty and injustice plague their land. They will see a people divided, and they will be compelled to stand up for change. They will also be forced to answer a question: What would you sacrifice to secure the crown of Albion? Will you uphold the values and principles that led to your ascension, or will you be corrupted by the station you’ve strived to acquire? Will you be a monarch of the people, or bring the entirety of Albion to the brink of collapse?

“We’ve spent a lot of time at Lionhead thinking about how we can innovate the gameplay and progress the world of the ‘Fable’ games for its third chapter, and we’re confident that players won’t second-guess what we have planned for ‘Fable III,’” said Molyneux, who also serves as creative director of Europe, the Middle East and Africa for Microsoft Game Studios. “Though I can’t give too much away right now, players should expect to have to make much tougher choices with far wider consequences than ever before in Albion — and with many more interactive adventure elements.”

In the epic story of “Fable III,” the journey to rule the throne of Albion begins five decades after the events of the last chapter, and you play as the child of your hero from “Fable II.” As you rule your kingdom as king or queen, you will be called upon to make choices and sacrifices that will test your morality and can affect your entire kingdom. Themes of heroism, leadership and consequence are taken to a grand scale as you fight to unite a divided people.

“Fable II” in Single-Serving Sizes

While “Fable II” has become the best-selling role-playing game of all time on Xbox 360, there are some who still have not experienced the magic and adventures that await them in Albion. For those who have watched from the outside, unsure if they were hero material, a surprise awaits. Microsoft and Lionhead Studios are about to embark on a new journey with the episodic release of “Fable II” on Xbox LIVE. The launch of “Fable II: Game Episodes” will debut Sept. 29 with the release of the first episode for free download exclusively on Xbox LIVE.

In the first episode, players will experience childhood and the trials of being a young adult in the world of Albion. After completing the chapter, players have the choice to then purchase the next installment or the entire game (in select regions). “Fable II: Game Episodes” delivers the entire “Fable II” experience in five consecutive instalments, with all the Achievements, challenges and excitement of the disk-based game, as well as full compatibility with the previously released Game Add-ons, “Knothole Island” and “See the Future.” The episodes are also fully compatible with the disk-based, retail version of “Fable II,” allowing players to enter Albion and continue their story should they purchase “Fable II” at retail. All editions of the game offer cooperative play with friends on the same couch as well as on Xbox LIVE.*

“With the launch of Games on Demand on Xbox LIVE, we have a great tool in place to deliver classic titles in an incredibly convenient fashion,” said Phil Spencer, general manager of Microsoft Game Studios. “With the ‘Fable II’ episodic model, we’re encouraging people to experience the first chapter of the game for free, then move onto other chapters when they are ready. It’s a unique model and one that will appeal to gamers who’ve been hesitant to dive full into the original retail release.”

“Fable III” will deliver a sweeping, powerful story and new innovations in gameplay and Xbox LIVE functionality when it is made available in the 2010 holiday season, only on Xbox 360. More information about “Fable III” and the episodic release of “Fable II” will be made available at a later date at www.lionhead.com.

The carnage continues with another fresh cut of Epic Battle Cry! In this special GDC skirmish, we run down all the news coming out of the Game Developer’s Conference this week. First up, we take a look at the leaked God of War III gameplay footage, ponder the Fable II DLC mentioned by Peter Molyneux, check out the trailer for the newly announced Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time, and investigate the teaser for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare 2.

First up for the main course we take a look at Nintendo’s lineup coming out of GDC; including The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks and the 1,000 free DSi point giveaway promotion. And then, the question we all want the answer to: is OnLive really the future of games? We cut to the heart of the matter and try to sort out the biggest news-bomb dropped on gaming in a good long while.

The Battle Cry of the Week calls on theaforementionedOnLive service to use their radically advanced technology to do something feasible (like end world hunger), rallies gamers to get off the couch, into the gym, and buffed up so they become the new Duke Nukem, heralds the arrival of the greatest RPG ever made, the original Final Fantasy, to Nintendo’s virtual console, and questions whether games are losing their challenge as they become more advanced.

Remember to sound off below and each week we’ll pick a new Axe Head comment to become the latest member Battle Cry of the Week. Stay sharp and we’ll see you next time!

This week we run down the news coming out of CES 2009 including Microsoft’s Primetime Xbox Live channel, Sony’s PS3 running through their new 3D hardware, and the SF IV Battle Royale scheduled to go down at CES 2010. We also look at the newly announced release dates for Fable II’s DLC; Knothole Island, Halo Wars, and Godfather II. Finally we take a moment to reconize the passing of a legend in our community; in the wake of the 1up purchase, EGM magazine has closed its doors forever.

The Battle Cry of the Week goes the Microsoft Zune for being the best piece of vaporware ever created, Capcom and Airtight Studios for the upcoming Dark Void, and 2K Games supreme ruler Christoph Hartmann for thinking six Star Wars films was a good idea.
